DA behou Wyk 9 in Eikestad

Drug haul in Khayamandi

Members of Stellenbosch police’s crime prevention team, Crime Intelligence and Stellenbosch Municipality’s Law Enforcement confiscated drugs valued at R380 000, after officials executed a search warrant at a house in Thubelitsha, Khayamandi on Wednesday 14 May at 17:30 A total of 819 g of loose tik, 758 bankies with tik, 752 full Mandrax, 15 half-Mandrax, 10 quarter-Mandrax and R588 in cash was found. Two suspects, 34 and 51 years, were arrested and charged with possession of tik and Mandrax and dealing in drugs

Volgens kapt.

Earth meets art through exhibition

Art lovers, curious visitors and ceramics collectors can start making plans to visit Spier Wine Farm’s historic Old Wine Cellar for Grounded Practice, a new ceramics exhibition that opens on Monday 26 May

Curated by Tamlin Blake, chief curator at Spier Arts Trust, the exhibition features 63 ceramic artworks by 42 artists from across South Africa, each one thoughtfully selected to explore themes of stability, sustainability and self-reflection

Grounded Practice offers th h f

and becomes ceramic, it also represents permanence and resilience ” For many of the artists in Grounded Practice, clay offers not just a physical medium, but a space of emotional release “Using clay in a creative space is soothing and healing,” Blake said “It’s meditative, and many artists find it helps them ground themselves and find their centre again ” Clay also connects people to the earth “It’s a direct link to the land,” Blake added “Many of the artworks in this show ask us to consider our impact and remind us of our responsibilit t d f t ”

Heritage blends with innovation

In the heart of the Bottelary Valley, on the edge of Stellenbosch, a new kind of village is taking shape Devonbosch is not just another development; it’s a carefully curated community where the space between buildings matters as much as the structures themselves.

RE-IMAGINING DEVELOPMENT WITH PURPOSE

Unlike conventional developments, Devonbosch began with a fundamental question; how to restore meaning to the land while building for the future

This philosophy led developers to transform a disused quarry rather than develop pristine vineyards, establishing a foundational commitment to sustainable rehabilitation.

“We wanted to create a place that feels as it’s been there forever, even as it builds for generations to come,” said the development team, which has worked alongside municipal authorities, local entrepreneurs and heritage stakeholders.

A COMMUNITY BY DESIGN

Phase 1 of the residential units is completely sold out, and all commercial and retail spaces are fully let.

What sets this precinct apart is its approach to community-building; functional spaces where concerts, markets and daily rituals naturally bring people together

The development deliberately

incorporates diverse residential offerings across different price points, from rental apartments to the luxury KLEI Aparthotel. This diversity forms the foundation of a vibrant social ecosystem.

WORK WHERE YOU LIVE

Economic vitality is woven into Devonbosch’s fabric Work experience is integrated into the precinct.

Cafés, restaurants, fitness studios and tech-forward offices create a self-sustaining econom-

ic engine The Innovation Hub, remote work zones, and creative spaces further enhance opportunities for residents to earn a living where they live

A soon-to-launch School of Rock, a music school for all ages, exemplifies this vision of a place where artists, coders, fitness enthusiasts, business people and musicians thrive

LIFESTYLE AND AMENITIES

Devonbosch emphasises participation over passive consumption.

Residents can start their day jogging along the Mini-GOAT trail or challenging themselves on the GOAT mountain-bike track. Water enthusiasts can try e-Foil or paddle-boarding on the calm dam

Unlocked Fitness is the community’s wellness hub, while the retail and dining district includes authentic experiences such as Super Sconto Italian deli, Ischia Italian restaurant and Brickfields Café where locals gather for everything from quick coffees to post-run breakfasts.

A year-round calendar of events awaits – including trail runs cycling events and the popular ASICS-sponsored Best Friend Trail Run where dogs and owners race together

SMART-VILLAGE ATMOSPHERE

Devonboschs architecture whispers rather than shouts, what with 4 m-high retail floors that maximise natural light and airflow

Materials are local, most notably own clay bricks fired next door at Cabrico a factory started in 1992 with Green Council certification. They lower emissions, shorten supply chains, and support local employment.

The design philosophy extends to infrastructure and mod-cons –wide walkways, cycle paths, shaded green corridors, a super-basement for vehicles, high-speed fibre and smart access control.

Sustainability at Devonbosch goes beyond buzzwords.

A neglected quarry has been transformed into a walkable water-wise community Internal gardens regulate temperature, rainwater harvesting systems conserve water, and energy efficiency is pervasive

This new paradigm of a smart village embraces technology without losing its soul.

Localwineries beatexpectations

The ambitious tree-planting campaign of Stellenbosch Wine Routes has dramatically exceeded expectations, with wineries planting more than 20 times the number of trees uprooted in last year’s devastating storm.

What began as a mission to restore the landscape of the City of Oaks now stands as a symbol of resilience, with over 6300 new trees gracing the region The initiative launched in the wake of the storm saw, among others, the uprooting of Stellenbosch’s oldest tree planted over two centuries ago

Under the leadership of the Stellenbosch Wine Routes board, the goal was to plant over 1 000 trees to restore the landscape that was dramatically affected.

The storm not only swept across the town and farmlands, but also led to a fire that razed the historic Manor House and Jonkershuis at Blaauwklippen estate Over 200 trees throughout the town and on farms were uprooted.

Soon after, commitments were made by Stellenbosch Wine Routes’ members to plant trees, with preference given to indigenous trees. English Oaks are being replaced with Turkish, Pin and Water Oak trees. To date, contributions have been made by producers across the region with among the largest being Villiera, which planted more than 2 000 saplings, and De Zalze Golf Estate, including Kleine Zalze Wines, with 3 258.

In collaboration with the Stellenbosch Trail Fund, the campaign will also honour local legends through the planting of commemorative trees along the Eerste River

Together with the tree planted for Jeanneret Momberg, former chief executive of Visit Stellenbosch, last year, another 10 indigenous trees will follow this winter to commemorate luminaries of Stellenbosch Wine Routes, such as previous chairpersons, founder members as well as the late Danie Steytler Sr of Kaapzicht.

“The success of this initiative has been extraordinary, not just in raising awareness of the trees that surround us, but also in making a tangible, lasting impact on the environment,” says Elmarie Rabe, general manager of Stellenbosch Wine Routes

“We are inspired to continue planting, preserving, and celebrating the natural

beauty that defines Stellenbosch.”

For Stellenbosch, it is particularly the mighty oak that has become synonymous with the landscape, as they line the streets that bring thousands of local and international visitors every year

Since the town’s foundation in 1679, it has been home to some of the oldest living oaks in South Africa, marking it an important custodian of a rich history. The region, however, faces new challenges, particularly with the emergence of the Polyphagous Shothole Borer Beetle Substantial research by specialists at Stellenbosch University, the Stellenbosch Municipality and around the country is being invested to curb its effects

“We invite all nature lovers to join us in this initiative by planting trees and sharing their endeavours,” says Rabe. “Using social media and tagging Stellenbosch Wine Routes helps to keep the conversation active and alive ”  For more information on the campaign, visit www.wineroute.co.za.

Prestige Brut has a new face

Hazendal Wine Estate’s Prestige Brut Cap Classique 2017 has a new face thanks to renowned South African artist Athi-Patra Ruga

The estate launched the Artist Series Limited Edition label under the curatorial vision of Khanyisile Mbongwa. In a limited-edition of only 1500 bottles worldwide, the label was created for the Hazendal Prestige Brut Cap Classique of the 2017 harvest.

The wine is an elegant blend of 62% chardonnay and 38% pinot noir made from the estate’s grapes, held for seven years on the lees and degorged with zero dosage in 2024. Set within a handcrafted African pine chest and accompanied by a curatorial booklet, the collectible wine is now available for order

The Artist Series Limited Edition bottle is a nuanced harmonisation between important art and exceptional wine

A leading voice in South African wine writing, Malu Lambert notes that “the vibrant packaging hints to the bottle’s energetic contents” and gave the Cap Classique a splendid 94/100 score, with international critics echoing the review.

Hazendal is committed to engage and form part of contemporary Africa’s unique and complex multi-cultural

context. In 2024 the Estate founded the annual Hazendal Festival as part of this commitment.

Guided by the vision and provocation of an invited curator, the festival brings together artists, scientists and cultural practitioners to think and create alongside each other. The Artist Series Limited Edition label emerges from the intellectual, artistic and spiritual dynamics of the festival with the curator commissioning a highly relevant artist to reflect on the creative harvest of the given year’s festival through a single work of art.

The inaugural edition was dedicated to the incredible life-fostering qualities of soil With the hope to grow a meaningful tradition of an annual festival, the Estate sought to attend to the cross-cultural meanings of the land on which it operates

The profits from the limited edition will be in entirety dedicated to supporting the arts, culture and science industries The estate is donating 5% of all sales to the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, and the remaining profits are committed to the organisation of the next edition of the Hazendal Festival to be held in early December
