“By een woning lyk dit asof ’n kraan oopgemaak is.

KLUBS ONSEKER OOR TOEKOMS

Call to nominate for poll
Registered voters in Ward 9 will head to the polls to elect a new ward councillor on Wednesday 14 May.
The scheduled by-election, conducted by the Electoral Commission (IEC) in the Western Cape, follows the recent resignation of former Ward 9 councillor Zelda Dalling. Ward 9 includes the Stellenbosch central business district as well as part of the Stellenbosch University campus.
The IEC is now calling on parties and independent candidates to submit nominations of ward councillor candidates by 17:00 on Monday 14 April.
Independent candidates and parties must comply with the regulations of the Municipal Electoral Act. Some of these include that a candidate be a registered voter in the municipality where the by-election is held, that a candidate be nominated by a registered political party
or, if standing as an independent, that the candidate also satisfy the minimum requirement of 50 signatures of registered voters of the ward concerned who support his or her nomination.
Parties and independent candidates must submit all required documents and pay the election deposit to contest by the deadline. Manual submissions can be made at the IEC office, Unit 1 of Bosmanshuis at 135 Dorp Street in Stellenbosch.
Parties or independent persons registered with the IEC’s Online Candidate Nomination System (OCNS) can capture and manage nominations, documentation and make payments online.
For more information on the OCNS, visit www.elections.org.za.
For more information, visit the local IEC office prior deadline or call the office during office hours on weekdays on 021 882 9054.
VF Plus-raadslid nou DA-lid
Civics want town to work for all
Yaël Malgas
Congestion will kill our dorp, but we can solve it while promoting good growth.
This was the idea underlying the first meeting of the chapter Stellenbosch Young Urbanists, which is looking to work with local entities to address challenges around Stellenbosch.
Roland Postma, CEO of the Young Urbanists South Africa, chaired the meeting after he was approached by local Anaïs Breytenbach about starting a local chapter of the organisation.
Breytenbach, who has lived in Stellenbosch all her life, said she saw the growing challenges of traffic congestion and urban development, and was motivated to do something about it. It seems numerous other locals felt the same, as the first chapter meeting saw young and old from various sectors attending it.
According to Postma the aim of the organisation is not to reinvent the wheel, but rather urge institutions such as the Stellenbosch Municipality to keep to its policies, such as the Stellenbosch Comprehensive Integrated Transport Plan, already created, and assist where there isn’t enough capacity to address ongoing issues. “We really want to work with Stellenbosch [Municipality] and show the town can be the best example of a town in Africa, and on an international level, if it actually just implements its own policies.”
But infrastructure alone doesn’t bring about change, he added, saying addressing safety and creating jobs can lead to real change.
Postma highlighted the local municipality’s plans for the Adam Tas Corridor, praising it for the plans already put in place. As in many cases, he said the aim is to hold state bodies accountable for the guidelines and work that has already been placed on paper.
Solutions to the ongoing traffic crisis in Stellenbosch was the main focus of the meeting, with locals suggesting parkand-rides, better road infrastructure to accommodate cyclists and walkers, and even light rail. The effect of upcoming housing developments and the Cape Winelands Airport will have on the City of Oaks’ traffic was also raised.
Postma said the organisation had already had talks with the municipality about adapting Merriman Street to improve bicycle lanes in the hopes of ultimately calming traffic.
Those in attendance were quite critical in their comments, taking issue with such matters such as public-participation
processes not being taken into account by council. The sentiment is that students with private transport partly contribute to the town's traffic headaches.
Students attending the meeting said walking and cycling would be their preferred mode of transport if safety was not such a big concern.
The municipality's Integrated Development Plan (IDP) is currently out for comment, with local meetings starting on Tuesday (8 April). “We are such a young democracy, but civil society has been in decline since the late 1990s, especially in our built areas when it comes to housing and transportation,” said Postma.
“It is so important for Young Urbanists and other [partner] NGOs to encourage public participation, plural plans and good positive advocacy, so our constitution becomes something we live every day.”
His message to the municipality is that criticism is not a threat but an opportunity to get government, the private sector and the public to work together for change to happen.
Municipal spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar, confirmed officials are in talks with the organisation. “We always encourage inputs and collaboration with organisations and the public in formulating long-term strategies,” he said.

124 lives cherished
The Stellenbosch-West Dutch Reformed church was transformed into a sanctuary of remembrance and hope when the annual Stellenbosch Hospice Remembrance Service was held on Sunday 30 March.
The service brought families, friends and community members together to honour the lives of 124 cherished souls who died in 2024. It included a moving message by Dr (Pastor) Sheridon Adonis, a candle-lighting ceremony and a heartfelt tribute by Stellenbosch Hospice CEO Jennilee Geduld.
The candle-lighting ceremony, a poignant ritual by hospice staff, marked each life with light and reverence. Each flame flickering from a candle represented not just a name, but also a life filled with love, laughter and memories that will echo in the hearts of their loved ones forever.
In her tribute, Geduld expressed her gratitude to hospice staff, healthcare professionals, and volunteers whose tireless dedication and loving care create a safe haven for those facing the unimaginable. These selfless individuals do not just provide palliative care, but have also embraced respite care, which offers families much-needed relief of up to two weeks from the emotional toll of care.
“Despite the incredible work being done, there still is a barrier of hesitation among families when it comes to seeking
hospice support,” Geduld explained. “The stigma surrounding hospice care can often dissuade families from reaching out, leaving many to navigate the challenging journey of illness and end-of-life care alone. The reality is that the compassionate services provided by Stellenbosch Hospice can be a beacon of hope in the darkest of times, guiding families with empathy and understanding.”
Stellenbosch Hospice extends its loving arms to the communities of Stellenbosch, Klapmuts and Simondium, as well as surrounding farms. However, the service relies on the generosity of individuals and organisations in the community.
Geduld also extended her appreciation to the remarkable supporters of the palliative care organisation, including the Jannie Mouton Foundation, Remgro, Het Jan Marais Nasionale Fonds, Cape Winelands District Municipality and the provincial Department of Health and Wellness (Jonathan Abrahams), and Stellenbosch Hospital (Dr Natasha Blanckenberg and Dr Thabita Mathose). She also acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the Stellenbosch Hospice board members.
After the service, Stellenbosch Hospice staff released balloons into the sky, with each balloon carrying whispers of love and memories to the heavens above.

Heed the call to donate blood
In a united effort to address the growing demand for blood, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS), in partnership with the South African National Blood Service (SANBS), is urging South Africans to become first-time blood donors this Saturday (12 April) from 09:00 to 16:00.
The one-day drive aims to recruit 800 new blood donors in an effort to grow a sustainable blood donor base and equally raise awareness about the critical need for regular blood donation. The WCBS hopes to recruit 300 new donors in the Western Cape and the SANBS hopes to recruit 500 new donors countrywide.
First-time donors are the focus, and the campaign aims to make that first step easy, welcoming, and life-changing. Both blood services anticipate blood stock shortages leading up to winter. Blood stock levels tend to decline during the Easter period as well as school holidays as donors make their way to their

Art collab by climate lounge
Barend J Williams
Three local Stellenbosch artists have recently been selected to showcase their work at And yet we imagine, a climate-awareness group exhibition in Cape Town.
The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation in District Six hosted the launch of the exhibits on Thursday 3 April.
And yet we imagine is a part of a project by Climate Lounge, an artistic endeavour that uses creativity to raise awareness of socio-environmental challenges. It was created in partnership with DearTomorrow, a digital and archival project that allows people to relate the issue of climate change through stories.
The exhibition is a participatory art show that uses the displays to envision a sustainable future. It brings together a diverse group of poets, painters, sound and performance artists as well as a collection of letters written by South Africans immersed in eco-justice.
And yet we imagine was co-curated by participating artists Sarah Robyn Farrell and Claire Rousell, and explores the intersection of art and socio-environmental concerns.
“Imagination is an individual pursuit, but collectively we can have significantly more impact," said Farrell. “Creativity is often seen as a luxury, but may be our most effective antidote against
climate change.”
Tiffani Kayler Dlamini, venue manager and theatre technician at Stellenbosch University’s (SU) Adam Small Theatre Complex, and Mmatumisang Motsisi, junior lecturer and PhD candidate at SU, combined their artistic forces to create “Calling the flowers home”.
Their installation is one of 12 artworks showcased as part of And yet we imagine
The pictures are a part of the duo’s project exploring the relationship between people and flowers, and imagining a reality where flora and humanity physically interchange. By doing this Dlamini and Motsisi feel they are able to tell the true indigenous stories of these plants and the people who cared for them.
EXPLORATION OF NATURE
“We have called on the memories of the flowers that existed in District Six, and particularly those of the people who once occupied the land,” said Dlamini. The pair was assisted by botanist Rupert Koopman and the pictures taken for the exhibition were by photographer Boipelo Khunou.
The duo further also acknowledges “Turning into flowers” editor and creative director Megan Nell, who selected the images for And yet we imagine.

The first is the “praying mantis”, which holds profound spiritual significance for the Khoisan. “Cape Cobra” is the second painting which is half snake, half plant. The final painting is the “Cape morel mushroom”, which was inspired by the recent discovery of Morchella capensis, the first morel mushroom endemic to Africa.

Fun, food and fundraising
The Southern Parrot Sanctuary will host the vibrant fundraising Cape Parrot Market at Exotic Animal World on the R44 in Klapmuts from 09:00 to 16:00 this Saturday (12 April).
The exciting community gathering aims to raise essential funds for the sanctuary’s new enclosures, providing a safer and more comfortable space for surrendered and rescued parrots.
For just R30 entry, visitors can enjoy a day of entertainment, shopping, and education, while making a direct impact on the lives of abandoned companion parrots.
Some of the event highlights include live music by talented local artists, market stalls selling unique, handcrafted goods and specialty items, food trucks, and exotic animal talks and demonstrations on parrots and other exotic species by experts.
“The Cape Parrot Market is more than just a market – it’s a movement to bring awareness to the plight of surrendered companion parrots and provide them with the sanctuary they deserve,” said Indigo Hawkins, co-founder of the Southern Parrot Sanctuary.
“Every ticket purchased brings us one step closer to building spacious enclosures for our rescued parrots.”
Statistics reveal that companion parrots are among the most frequently rehomed pets, with many ultimately seeking refuge in sanctuaries.
By attending the event, visitors will play a key role in ensuring a brighter future for these magnificent birds.

Acclaimed play at Baxter
The critically acclaimed Tony award-winning play A Doll’s House, Part 2 by Lucas Hnath will come to the Baxter Theatre in Rondebosch this month.
The show, which stars Bianca Amato and Zane Meas, has enjoyed successful runs on Broadway and at the Donmar Warehouse in London. Presented by The Quickening Theatre Company, the smart, funny, freshly contemporary response to Ibsen’s classic is directed by Barbara Rubin and runs from Wednesday 16 April to Saturday 10 May at 20:00, with Saturday matinees at 15:00.
Amato returns to the South African stage to play Nora, while Meas plays Torvald. The play is directed by New York-based Rubin, who returns to her home country, and also stars Charlotte Butler and Simone Neethling.
In the iconic climax of Henrik Ibsen’s original play, written in 1879, Nora Helmer shockingly rejects the suffocating confines of her marriage, and walks out the door. We know only that she is desperate for her own becoming, to find her own truth. Now, 15 years later, she is back, knocking on that same door, because she needs something. What has her life been like on the outside? What does she want? We relate to each character’s flawed but deeply human take on relationships and responsibility. This nuanced play debating the pros and cons of marriage is both moving and immensely entertaining – a sharp, often explosively hilarious investigation into societal expectations of love and tradition. Bookings for A Doll’s House Part 2 can be made online through Webtickets or at any Pick n Pay store.
The time for parking action is now
Dear Mayor Fasser,
On 5 December 2024, an open letter published in Eikestadnuus welcomed your election as Executive Mayor of Stellenbosch and outlined urgent priorities for our town (“An open letter to Executive Mayor Fasser”).
Among the key concerns raised was the dire need to address the cancer known as traffic congestion through extensive park-and-ride facilities, a practical, achievable and long-overdue solution.
More than 130 days have passed since that letter was published and, despite ongoing discussions and repeated calls for action, Stellenbosch remains gridlocked.
Year after year “park-andride facilities for the CBD”
Letters from our readers have appeared on Ward 9’s list of priorities, yet meaningful progress remains elusive.
PARK-AND-RIDE: A FEASIBLE, IMMEDIATE SOLUTION
This is not a complex or controversial issue; the municipality has already identified suitable land, and a working model is tested annually during Woordfees
During Woordfees minibus taxis operate on fixed routes, reliably and safely transporting people into town. This demonstrates a park-and-ride system is feasible and effective.
The only missing ingredient is the political will to make it permanent.
Stellenbosch University and the municipality are among our town's primary drivers of traffic congestion. As the largest employers and daily traffic generators, their responsibility to lead by example is undeniable.
It is time for both institutions to adopt and champion the use of park-and-ride facilities actively in principle and through visible, sustained action.
Appropriate planning and coordination allow the municipality to implement a full-time park-and-ride system, with secure, well-managed parking areas and regular shuttle services into the CBD.
For such a system to be successful, meaningful incentives must be created to encourage its use. This includes limiting
‘We’ve all got a little entrepreneur in us now’
For our Entrepreneurial Spirit assignment in the Young Minds Programme –Class of 2025 our group took the challenge on of turning a small investment into a profit, with all proceeds going to a community project.
We decided to run a raffle, landing some seriously awesome prizes thanks to the generosity of local businesses. This whole thing wouldn’t have been possible without these amazing businesses donating prizes: Coopmanhuijs Boutique Hotel & Spa – R1 150 voucher for a three-course dinner for two; Stellenbosch Wine Tractor – two tractor ride vouchers; The Pottery – R400 voucher; Lekker Dutch Col’Cacchio – R250 voucher; Gino’s – three R200 vouchers; and Ben’s Bubble Tea – 60 vouchers.
We also wish to extend a big “thanks” to our selling partners who allowed us to sell tickets at their venues: Java Café, De Akker and Hudsons. Without you we wouldn’t have been able to spread the word and smash our sales goals.
The Young Minds Programme – the Class of 2025 raised nearly R22 000 in total, and our group contributed around R7 000 from the raffle. All the funds went to Little Brinks, a charity that’s doing amazing work for children in need.
The raffle winners were announced on Wednesday 19 March. Seeing how much we raised made all the hard work worth it. We didn’t just sell tickets, we made a real impact, and that’s something of which to be proud.
This challenge pushed us out of our comfort zones and taught us some real-life skills – how to market, sell and hustle. Talking to people, convincing them to buy tickets and figuring out what worked (and what didn’t) was a new experience. Suffice to say, we’ve all got a little entrepreneur in us now.
Thanks to everyone who supported us – you helped make this happen! YOUNG MINDS PROGRAMME – CLASS OF 2025, STELLENBOSCH UNIVERSITY

the availability of parking in the CBD and adjusting parking fees to reflect the broader cost of congestion to the town. If funding is the issue, privatise it! Funding should not be the issue since the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) determines where funding should go.
TIME FOR LEADERSHIP
Mayor Fasser, your council adopted the IDP, an official binding strategy that explicitly prioritises sustainable transport and identifies park-and-ride as a key intervention. At the IDP meeting on Wednesday 9 April park-andride again emerged as one of the residents’ most consistent and urgent priorities. There is no justification for further delays.
Residents are not calling for another round of consultations or abstract policy discussions; they are calling for implementation. With firm leadership and decisive action, park-andride facilities could be up and running within a few months, bringing immediate relief to traffic congestion and setting Stellenbosch towards more sustainable urban mobility. Stellenbosch’s people are watching. Your leadership will be measured by the solutions you deliver.
We urge you to honour the IDP’s commitments and make park-and-ride a reality, without delay, without excuses, and with the urgency that our town deserves.
Sêgoed ‘ingeweef’ in familie

Owen Dalton (second from left) is congratulated by judging panel chair Hendryk Hofmeyr, as runners-up Chesney Palmer (right) and Anthonie Jansen van Rensburg look on.
SU student is top composer
Owen Dalton, MMus student at Stellenbosch University (SU), has been crowned the winner of the third SA Composers’ Competition.
The 26-year-old claimed the title for his piece “Ramblings of the Mind”, which is run by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO). The final round of the competition was held at the Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre in Parow on Saturday 15 March under the direction of Jeremy Silver.
Dalton won a cash prize of R20 000 and the title of composer in residence with the CPO. The runners-up were Chesney Palmer (Sandton) and Anthonie Jansen van Rensburg (Somerset West).
Dalton was runner-up in the previous two competitions.
“Winning this competition is an immense privilege, and it has provided me with an invaluable opportunity for growth as a young composer,” he said.
“I am incredibly grateful to Maestro Silver for his efforts digesting our scores, to the CPO for their time and tremendous playing as well as everyone else involved in putting the competition together.”
The jury was unanimous in its choice, said judging panel chairperson Hendryk
Hofmeyr. “All the works were successfully performed with great conviction. Owen’s piece is remarkable for its original exploration of rich timbres and gestures. It is difficult to use so many gestures and make it convincing and he succeeded.”
Dalton follows in the footsteps of previous winners Conrad Asman (2023) and fellow SU student Lize Briel (2024), whose commissioned work, “Tesselation”, was performed while the judges were deliberating. The panel comprised composers Pieter Bezuidenhout, Amy Crankshaw, Arthur Feder, Clare Loveday and Lise Morrison, with Antoni Schonken as convenor and Hofmeyr as non-voting chairperson.
The competition attracted more than 20 entries from across the country and is a sign that classical music continues to flourish with a new generation of talented young composers.
“All contestants wrote pieces of up to 15 minutes for orchestra with the use of indigenous instruments as an option,” said CPO CEO Louis Heyneman.
“It was interesting to hear how Lise Briel continued developing last year’s piece ‘Echoes’ and its use of the uhadi to include in ‘Tesselation’ the use of the kiganda, a marimba-like instrument.”
Enter speaking competition
Are you silver-tongued? Do you have the gift of the gab? If so, the brand-new Nou praat jy! public speaking competition, presented by Curro Durbanville High School as part of its Kultura Festival, is meant for you. It will be held at the school’s campus from Friday 20 to Friday 27 June. The festival includes theatre and music productions, a battle of the bands and a wine festival, with tickets available online through Quicket.
Schools can now enter their most confident public speakers in Curro Durbanville’s Nou praat jy! competition.
The school invites high schools across the country to enter their most seasoned team for the competition-with-a-twist: two learners must team-up and present the speech in unison.
The competition’s theme is Afrikaans –’n taal van kleure en klank – quite fitting, given that the Afrikaans language has been an official language for 100 years this year.
The contest can be presented in a persuasive, entertaining or motivation-
al manner and is open to Afrikaans home-language speakers and Afrikaans first additional language speakers in a category for juniors (Grade 8 and/or 9) and seniors (Grade 10 to 12). Each team has five to seven minutes to put their best foot forward, and the judges will be looking for a spontaneous interaction between speakers.
“We are looking forward to lekker conversational dialogue,” says Afrikaans teachers Joline de Klerk and Maritsa Smit. “Additionally, we keep our fingers crossed that teams bring regional languages and dialects of Afrikaans to the stage. We hope they come and talk like they talk at home!”
The winning schools and winners get R10 000 each, runners-up get R6 000 each and third place winners get R4 000 each. The closing date for entries is Thursday 24 April. Enter online at www.curro.co.za or email Joline de Klerk at joline.d@curro.co.za.

Join DarkFEST’s big-air mayhem
Action awaits this weekend when one of the world’s most progressive freeride mountain-biking (MTB) events, DarkFEST, is held at Vuurberg Farm in Stellenbosch.
The MTB event will surely see massive jumps and an all-star line-up of riders ready to provide big-air mayhem. Hosted by event creator Sam Reynolds, DarkFEST 2025 is set to have some of the gnarliest freeride sessions. A limited batch of tickets is available for the event at The Hellsend Dirt Compound at Vuurberg farm.
For those wanting to get a look at the Darkfest 2025 course, there is the Insta360 course preview. Prepare for a lavish display of free-ride MTB genius with the entire DarkFEST course through the eyes of Reynolds, Dylan Lamb, Sam Hodgson, Kaos Seagrave and Dylan Lamb.
Featuring the world’s biggest jumps on one of the world’s longest jump lines, the ninth year of DarkFEST once again welcomes the best freeriders on the planet for another week of big air and big haircuts.
The trails crew have done an outstanding job refreshing the course of dreams, also adding some new features like the quarter pipe leading into a set of shark
fins that have added some new possibilities to an already bonkers course.
DarkFEST has earned a rightful reputation as one of the most progressive events through the years. It continues to push boundaries of how much fun can be had on and off a bike.
Featuring the world-famous step-up, the rocket launchers that are widely considered the “Mozart of jumps” and generate some of the biggest amplitude ever experienced on a bike, speeds of up to 80 km/h and of course the 110-footjump that has been privy to Tom Isted’s world record dirt-to-dirt backflip.
The event continues to push boundaries with some of the largest jumps in MTB history and will welcome the world’s best male and female riders to test them to their limits.
This year’s lineup will see MTB legends, fan favourites, emerging free-ride and slope-style talent such as Clemens Kaudela, Robin Goomes and Kaiden Ingersoll making their way to the Boland. Riding is dependent on various factors especially the weather.
Visit the DarkFest social media pages to stay up to date on the and for all relevant announcements. Saturday's ride starts at 08:00 and will be on until 17:00.
Tickets are available from R300 per person through Quicket

Maties keep marching on
Maroon Machine gears up for ‘last dance’
All roads lead to the Danie Craven Stadium next Monday (14 April), when the allCape 2025 FNB Varsity Cup final will be contested by FNB Maties and FNB UCT.
This after the two sides were victorious in the respective semi-finals this past Monday evening (7 April). The Ikeys triumphed 35-48 over FNB UP-Tuks at Tuks Stadium in Pretoria, while Maties earned a hard-fought 19-7 win over FNB UFS Shimlas.
Wet conditions made handling difficult for both sides, setting the stage for a low-scoring, tactical battle. Maties immediately put pressure on the visitors, who struggled with unforced errors throughout the encounter. The home side, led by coach Kabamba Floors, controlled the game
De Jager’s constant threat ensures Maties’ place in final
with smart tactics, converting pressure into three well-placed penalties by flyhalf Christiaan van Heerden-Smith.
Shimlas fought back in the second quarter, intensifying the pressure, especially after Maties were reduced to 13 players due to two yellow cards. Though they couldn’t capitalise on all their chances, the men from Bloemfontein earned a penalty try, closing the gap to 9-7 at half-time.
After the break Maties right wing Grant de Jager made his mark, chasing down a kick from Van Heerden-Smith to score a point-of-origin try from
his own half. Despite missing the conversion, Van HeerdenSmith added another penalty a short while later, taking the score to 19-7. In a match dominated by forward play it was De Jager’s opportunistic try and constant threat on attack that did it, ensuring the Maroons’ place in the final.
Reaching the final of the prestigious competition in the institution’s 150th year is a fitting celebration for the Stellenbosch outfit, who will contest the final for the 11th time since the tournament's establishment in 2008 and will by gunning for their sixth victory. Next week’s final will be the eighth time the Ikeys are involved in the “last dance” and they will hope to claim the spoils for the third time. . The final match kicks-off at 19:00.
Nuwe speeltruie
vir Pniël Villagers
Avril Fillies
tevrede met my wenhoogte.”
