Saverextensionopened

Somerset West welcomed the valuable addition of the Khethani Women’s Wellness Centre, an extension of the Helderberg Baby Saver, in Caledon Street on Saturday (8 March), seen by many as a fitting tribute to International Women’s Day.

Guests were warmly welcomed to the premises for a relaxing morning launch, which entailed a steaming cuppa java and breakfast muffin on arrivaland a tour of the centre followed by the official opening.

According to co-founder Amanda-Lea Jones, Khethani was established in recognition of the need to support women and girls facing crisis pregnancies.

The Helderberg Baby Saver is a special safe built into a wall at Choices Crisis Pregnancy Centre in Schapenberg Road and acts as a last port of callfor help or hope, enabling safe abandonment of an unwanted baby. When a baby is placed in the safe, an alarm is triggeredand respondents appointed, including security and emergency personnel, collect the infant.

The baby is then medically checked, cared for and eventually placed for adoption through a partnership with Wandisa Child Protection and Adoption Agency. Since its launch in 2014, 14 babies have been relinquished through the Saver. Jones, one of the Saver respondents, further detailed the newly-launched community organisation’sobjectives, which is to offer 24-hour crisis and counselling-support services for women, and to empower girls throughsexual health workshops aimed at preventing future crisis pregnancies.

Khethani endeavours to journey alongside parents, assisting them through difficult processes such as adoption or abortion, and by providing in-hospital support, counselling and monitoring their well-being.

“Recognising the need,” Jones said, “Khethani has extended its services to include skills workshops for women and young girls who have had babiesor decided to keep them as wellas jobplace-

Khethani has already founded support groups for young moms in schools, with social worker Frances Fuchs as facilitator. Fuchs, who’s in the second year of her involvement with Khetani, proudly noted Nomzamo High School’s success story, sharing that the support group had girls from Grade 11 and 12. She said five

girls from the group matriculated last year, with Khethani helping two of them embark on tertiary study funded by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and one secure a job.

“One of the girls said ‘I didn’t think it was possible; I never thought I could dream of studying. And here I stand’,” said Fuchs, who added that all young

women need is someone telling them they can do anything they put their minds to. Fuchs is currently working at Simanyene Secondary School, where the initial turnout was more than 20 girls, which dwindled to a regular group. “These were all teen moms in Grade 10 and 11. We will walk with them through Grade 12 and then start another group.”

Beachfront facelift on cards

A concerted effort is underway in Strand to enhance its beachfront amenities and achieve BlueFlag accreditation.

A core team, led by Daantjie Malan, chairperson of Future Strand, is spearheading the initiative, emphasising the historical significance of Strand as South Africa’s oldest holiday destination.

The proposed development aims to create a modern, integrated beachfront facility, incorporating a range of amenities designed to cater to both residents and tourists.

These include a coffee shop, restaurant, tourism information centre and upgraded sanitary facilities.

Architectural proposals feature a centrally-located structure, aligned with a primary beach access route, and a flat concrete roof to mitigate visual obstruction from adjacent residentialproperties.

The drive for this project stems from a desire to elevate Strand’s coastal infrastructure to a standard that aligns with other prominent False Baylocations, and to secure Blue Flag status.

But the team admitted that water quality falls outside the scope of their work and thus were unable to elaborate on how they would achieve Blue Flag Status, but reiterated that this development will not only enhance the visitor experience, but also stimulate the local economy. Key stakeholders, including town planner Wilhelm Esterhuizen, architect Kobus Coetzee, and engineer Gerrit Els, have been engaged in preliminary discussions with municipal officials.

The subsequent phase willinvolve formal engagement with the City of Cape

Anartist’simpressionofaproposedstructureonStrandBeach.

Town, predicated on thorough preparatory work.

Public participation is considered integral to the project’s success. Coetzee has extended an invitation to the community to submit questions, comments and proposals via email to kobus@studiodarc.net. He has committed to providing direct responses, ensuring transparency and fostering collaborative input.

“We want to proceed only with your support and will aim to satisfy and reconcile the needs of the locals as well as the tourists,” said Coetzee.

The project faces several challenges, notably securing adequate funding and navigating the requisite regulatory approvals.

While acknowledging the City’s competing priorities, the team remained optimistic about securing municipal support. They also admitted they could not say how much money was needed, but that they hoped the public would funnel money towards the project.

Regarding economic impact, the team anticipated the development would generate both direct construction jobs and indirect opportunities through increased

tourism.

They emphasised improved beachfront facilities would enhance Strand’s appeal as a destination, attracting greater visitor expenditure.

Asked about the Strand jetty, the team confirmed their previous involvement in refurbishment designs and expressed a preference for a timber structure, while acknowledging the financial implications.

No further details were provided on whether the refurbishment of the jetty would actually be pursued.

Questioned about the contingency plans should the project encounter unexpected delays or cost overruns, Coetzee replied: “Every reasonable architect always plans for both and always walks a very fine line. It boils down to trust in the architect.”

Regarding what the appeal would be to the new enhanced beach amenities, seeing there are already several coffee shops and restaurants along Beach Road, he said: “Your question will be clearly answered by the public’s response. It is not my function to motivate my personal experiences of the past 30 years.”

Seawallbuild progressing

Significant progress is being made on the Strand Sea Wall upgrade project, according to Eddie Andrews, Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment.

“We are pleased to report that the off-site construction of the sea-wall units is well underway at the precast yard located in the Cape Town Airport industrial area,” he said. “This crucial work ensures the efficient and timely delivery of the project.”

Andrews added that the precast yard has already produced 11 concrete sea wall units and 240 concrete coping units, demonstrating the project’s momentum. In Beach Road itself the contractor is currently focusing on the initial 200-m stretch of a 1030-m project.

Key activities on site currently include traffic accommodation, where a stop-go and re-route of a portion is being manned daily, a 50-m temporary sea wall/wave protection has been installed, excavation work has commenced, light poles have been removed between the Strand swimming pool and Alex Pienaar Street, and the project team is actively relocating existing palm trees within the first 200-m zone.

“The relocation of the palm trees is being handled with care to ensure their preservation,” Andrews added. “This project is not only about strengthening our coastal defences, but also about maintaining the aesthetic appeal of the Strand beachfront.”

Filling gaps left by schooling needs

Just weeks after its official launch, the community-driven initiative Smiling Child is making its mark on the community by addressing the educational needs of vulnerable children from Morkel’s Cottage informal settlement in Strand.

The project provides essential learning opportunities and nutritionalsupport to children unable to access mainstream education.

The emergence of Smiling Child stems from the observations of Sharon Engelbrecht, who identified a cohort of children constantly absent from formal schooling.

On investigation, it was determined that many of them lacked fundamental documentation, specifically birth certificates and parental identification, which are prerequisites for schoolenrolment. Engelbrecht undertook the task of assisting families in obtaining these documents, laying the foundation for the educational project.

“The initial drive for this programme arose from the recognition that these children were being denied access to education due to administrative barriers," stated Karen Swart, a volunteer with Smiling Child. “Our primary objective is to provide them with a supportive learning environment and the tools necessary for future success.”

Smiling Child currently serves 25 children aged eight to 13 by offering a structured learning programme conducted by

MembersofSmilingChildwithsomeofthechildren theyhavetakenundertheirwing.

dedicated volunteers. Its curriculum is designed to address the individual educational needs of each child, fostering a sense of engagement and achievement. In addition to educational instruction, the programme provides daily nutritional support, including breakfast and lunch.

Its ethos extends beyond basic academic instruction. It emphasises the development of core values, such as respect, compassion and discipline, aiming to equip children with the social and emotional skills necessary to navigate life's challenges.

“We believe that these children deserve the opportunity to develop their full potential,” Swart explained. “Our goal is to instil in them a sense of hope and to provide them with the support they need to build a brighter future.”

Smiling Child is seeking partnerships and donations to sustain its operations and expand its reach. Individuals and organisations interested in contributing to the programme are encouraged to phone Engelbrecht on 072 372 3410.

Penultimate weekend serves up array of results

Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) experienced a weekend of contrasting fortunes in First Division B, suffering a narrowdefeat to Bishop Lavis CC on Saturday 8 March, before bouncing back with a thrilling victory over UCT on Sunday (9 March).

Saturday’s encounter sawBishop Lavis emerge victorious by five wickets. Winning the toss and electing to bowl,

Bishop Lavis capitalised on their decision, dismissing SWCC for a just 155 in 42.5 overs. Despite valiant efforts from Jean de Wet (37), Jan Rademan (32) and Paul Roux (30), SWCC struggled to forge meaningful partnerships.

In pursuit of 156, Bishop Lavis displayed composure, reaching the target in 47.3 overs. Despite De Wet’s impressive all-round performance, claiming 3/18 with the ball, and Paul Roux’s 2/41, SWCC couldn’t prevent the defeat.

However, SWCC’s fortunes dramatically improved on Sunday against UCT when they chased down a challenging 241 with four wickets in hand. UCT, batting first, posted a formidable 240-7.

Gouws Koen and Robbie Uys each claimed two wickets for SWCC. The local lads’ response was nothing short of spectacular. Jean De Wet, showcasing his consistent form, remained unbeaten on a brilliant 100 off 112 balls, guiding his team to victory. Nigel Dirks (37) and Andre Gerber (26) played crucial supporting roles.

SWCC will face UCT again this weekend in their final fixture of the season.

In First Division D, Bellville South Cricket Club secured a comfortable 64-run victory over Strand CC. Bellville South posted a total of 140 runs in 43.2 overs, bolstered by 16 extras. In response, Strand struggled to build momentum, being bowled out for just 76 runs in 28.2 overs.

Strand CC’s next match will be against Fishhoek CC at Gustrouw this weekend.

Also in First Division D, Helderberg Cricket Club secured a convincing seven-wicket victory over Fish Hoek CC. After winning the toss and electing to field, Helderberg restricted Fish Hoek to a total of 155/9 in their allotted 50 overs.

Gary-Jon Sylvester was the pick of the bowlers for Helderberg, claiming an impressive 5/13. He was well supported by Aidan Salie (3/29) and Gregan Mouers (1/48), who maintained the pressure on the Fish Hoek batsmen.

In reply, Helderberg chased down the target with ease, reaching 156 in just 33 overs. Jody Sylvester led the charge with an unbeaten 75, while Chalynn Hess provided solid support with an unbeaten 63. Helderberg’s last fixture of the season is against Seacrest Cricket Club at Helderzicht Sports Grounds.

In the Second Division, Macassar Cricket Club (MCC) continued their undefeated streak with a resounding nine-wicket victory over CPUT. This 20th consecutive win secures their promotion to the First Division with two games still

remaining in the season.

MCC captain Robin Pretorius won the toss and elected to bowl, a decision that quickly paid dividends. Celenski van Graan tore through the CPUT top order, claiming three early wickets and leaving the home side reeling. Robert Harding provided excellent support, taking four wickets of his own as CPUT collapsed to 68/8 in just 18 overs and eventually reached 90 all out in 23 overs. Van Graan finished with figures of 4/48, Harding with 4/18.

In response, MCC lost an early wicket but veteran Quinton Bowman (56 not out) and Thomas Kemp (30 not out) steadied the ship with a dominant partnership. Bowman’s innings included seven boundaries, while Kemp smashed three fours and a six as MCC cruised to victory in the 19th over. MCC’s next fixture is a home game against Mamre Cricket Club this Saturday.
