Upmarket development may alter area’s character, says GBRA

A proposed development at 43 Beach Road in Gordon’s Bay is aimed to revitalise the area with a new 18unit luxury apartment building.

The developers, through ArchAus Architects, have submitted an application for site development plan departures for erf 3068.

The project, scaled down from its initial 24 units, seeks to capitalise on the scarce availability of new luxury apartments in the area, which the developers describe as “underdeveloped in terms of new luxury apartments” compared to neighbouring Strand.

“When this property became available our client jumped at the opportunity to invest in a new landmark for the area,” stated the motivational letter submitted by ArchAus. “Hopefully, this will set a precedent for revival in the area.”

The property, currently zoned as General Business 2, allows for apartment/flat development and falls within existing zoning restrictions for height, floor ratio, coverage and parking, according to the application. The ground

floor is planned to house a shop, proposed as an ice-cream outlet, designed to integrate with the existing streetscape of coffee shops and retail along Beach Road. The location, near a large public parking area, is anticipated to attract visitors to the surrounding beaches.

Parking provisions include 22 vehicle bays, unofficial tandem bays, motorbike parking, visitor bays and retail parking, totalling 27 bays. The developers state that this meets the City of Cape Town’s parking requirements for the proposed 18 units and retail space.

The application also addressed services and infrastructure, electricity, and water and sanitation, and confirmed the structure does not qualify for heritage status.

ArchAus concluded that the development “suits the continuous commercial and upmarket housing by optimising the land-use, planning principle and will be a desirable development for Gordon’s Bay”. It believes the investment will create jobs, provide upmarket residences and

CIT armed robbery foiled

positively impact neighbouring property values, potentially spurring further development in the area.

The application also requests a permanent departure from the City’s Municipal Planning Bylaw of 2015. The proposed building, exceeding 10 m in height, requires permission to be located 3 m from the Beach Road street boundary building line, rather than the prescribed distance of 4,5 m.

The Gordon’s Bay Residents’ Association (GBRA) have already made their intentions clear in objecting to the proposed development.

Chairperson Edwina Hadfield said that there are major concerns regarding infrastructure, particularly the sewage system on the beachfront, which is already under significant strain.

“We experience frequent sewage overflows, and we believe this development will only exacerbate the existing problem,” she said.

“Until the City addresses the infrastructure deficiencies and resolves the ongoing sewage issues plaguing our

beachfront, we cannot support any further development.

“Furthermore, residents are deeply concerned about the impact this building will have on the character and aesthetics of our beachfront. We believe it will negatively alter the landscape, and we are not satisfied with the proposed design. Therefore, the GBRA firmly rejects this development proposal.”

The public is invited to view the application at the relevant district office during operating hours (08:00 to 14:30) on weekdays.

Appointments with case officers or discussions regarding specific aspects of the application can be arranged via email at helderberg.hub@capetown.gov.za.

Objections, comments or representations concerning the proposal must be submitted on the prescribed form, with reasons provided, by Thursday 27 February.

V Submissions can be made via email to comments_objections.helderberg @capetown.gov.za and the prescribed form is available for download at http:// www.capetown.gov.za/LandUseObjections.

A heroic armed security officer behind the wheel of a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle thwarted an armed-robbery attempt during a collection at Nomzamo U-Save on Monday (10 February).

According to police the CIT vehicle arrived at the Nomzamo Business Centre around 12:58 to collect an undisclosed amount of money from the supermarket. Following collection, the security officers were targeted by the suspected armed robbers while exiting with the cash boxes via a back entrance near the taxi rank. “Four suspects armed with firearms swooped on the security officers, ordering the collection crew to the ground. The brave driver, however, reacted swiftly after anticipating what was to unfold. He pulled his firearm, opening fire at the unsuspecting robbers. A shoot-out ensued as the suspects returned fire in an attempt to flee,” said Lwandle police spokesperson Mthokozisi Gama. One of the security officers (38) who assisted with the collection, was wounded in the upper right arm and was transported to hospital for treatment. No money was taken and the CIT security officers immediately drove to the Lwandle Police Station, where a case of attempted cash-in-transit robbery was opened for further investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).

Hoës inspekteer bouprojek

Barend J. Williams

Sewer saga surges on

A major sewage leak caused by a collapsed pipeline has forced the closure of large sections of Strand Beach, leaving residents and marine life suffering the consequences.

The crisis, which began on Tuesday 4 February, has seen frequent and significant sewage overflows along De Villiers and Van der Merwe streets, with the waste flowing into the stormwater system and ultimately discharging into the ocean.

“Material from the collapse is blocking the flow in the Trappies pipeline,” explained a local engineer familiar with the situation. “The City of Cape Town started overpumping with one pump, then increased to three, and now four, but still aren’t able to overpump the large sewage flows.”

He highlighted the ongoing challenge of repairing the pipeline while it remained operational. “I’m still keen to know how the City plans to do Curedin-Place-Pipe (CIPP) lining of Trappies while the pipeline is operational. The contractor will have to overpump large volumes of sewage continuously to isolate sections of the pipe for emptying, cleaning, inspecting, repair and then lining. This project has a high risk of sewer overflows in the process.”

The environmental impact of the leak is also a major concern. Lisa Starr, founder of Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement (Hoam), commented: “Sadly the sewerage entering the sea can not only have a negative effect on us, but on marine life in the area too, for they are also directly affected. It’s a small localised impact, as it disperses very quickly. The magnitude of getting this line fixed is concerning. But we know that the City is working around-theclock to get it resolved. So let’s try and help nature in other ways by removing plastics from its environment when we see it.”

In a statement, Mayoral Committee

member for Water and Sanitation Zahid Badroodien provided an update on the situation.

“Teams are on-site and have cleared the line, allowing flow through the system,” Badroodien said.

“The emergency contractor has also arrived on-site and we have increased overpumping capacity and installed powerful mobile pumps. We sincerely apologise for the ongoing disruption and thank the residents for their patience during this challenging time. We remain committed to keeping you informed every step of the way.”

Despite the City’s assurances, the ongoing overflows and beach closures paint a contrasting picture.

An update from the City regarding the Trappies upgrade stated there were ongoing efforts to address recurring sewage overflows impacting De Villiers and De Kock streets, and the sewerupgrade tender was expected to go before the Bid Adjudication Committee, with construction anticipated to take 1214 months. A public meeting is planned for March.

The Trappies pipeline continued collapsing throughout the Strand area, the latest along Van der Merwe and De Villiers streets.

There are still good people

“Do good and good will come to you.”

This adage rings especially true for a local hospital porter who went above and beyond the call of duty to return a stranger’s lost wallet basically intact.

Maggie de Gouveia from Somerset West expressed her sincere gratitude to Simphiwe Ncindelo of Mediclinic Vergelegen for his admirable deed, which not only serves as an example for others, but also restored her faith in humanity.

She recounted assisting a fellow Heritage Park resident around 16:00 on Friday 10 January. The woman whose father had been a loyal customer of her husband’s business, Strand Fisheries (since closed down), needed a lift to a local shopping centre to run some urgent errands. Without hesitation De Gouveia offered to help by jumping in her Toyota Fortuner.

On returning home around 19:30 that evening, she received a call from a security officer at the apartment complex, informing her a man by the name of Simphiwe was at the main gate with her wallet. “I remember turning to my husband and saying, ‘I don’t know a Simphiwe,’ and asking him to go to the gate for me. When my husband got there, he called to confirm that the man did indeed have my wallet. I replied, ‘I don’t believe it, because my wallet is in the car’s glove compartment, where I left it’.”

But this clearly was not the case, and the De Gouveias were naturally curious to know where Ncindelo had found the wallet. They were shocked to learn he had picked it up while walking home

from work along the Van der Stel bridge. “I was on my way home with a colleague when I stumbled across two store cards,” the good Samaritan recalled.

“I picked the cards up, and just before destroying them I spotted the wallet. Thinking that perhaps the owner was the victim of a possible crime, I collected everything. I checked the wallet in an attempt to trace the owner, finding an ID and a letter with the details of the likely owner’s address. I had initially planned on taking it to work with me the next morning, where we could check whether the owner was a patient at the hospital. But I decided to track the owner down myself.”

He called an e-hailing service and went straight to De Gouveia’s place of residence.

Asked what had motivated him to go through all the effort to return the wallet, Ncindelo said: “It was just the right thing to do. If I were to lose my

wallet I would hope someone would spare me the schlepp of replacing my cards and return my belongings.”

According to De Gouveia her wallet had everything except her bank card, and an undisclosed amount of money was returned, all thanks to Ncindelo who is the true definition of humility and compassion.

“Always be honest, you have one name and always look out for it, and remember that no good deed goes unseen and there are good people in this world,” extended De Gouveia.

Asked how he felt after this exemplary deed, which he deservingly is praised for, the 29-year-old Zola resident exclaimed: “I feel like a hero!”

Ncindelo’s superior Egram Pekeur, financial administration manager at Mediclinic Vergelegen, expressed his pride of the staffer, who went to great lengths to return property that had not even belonged to a patient at the medical facility. He highlighted that the efforts were a testament to Ncindelo’s character as a noble and honest person who has been employed at the hospital for eight months. “Ncindelo is employed as a porter by JC Security, an outsourced company for which I oversee all the porters at the hospital,” Pekeur explained.

“He was among the candidates interviewed for the position, but he initially lacked some of the required skills. However, the company helped him obtain the necessary qualifications, including a specific driver’s licence. This was because he was our preferred candidate; we were impressed by his conduct during the interview process, his politeness and approachability. It’s always gratifying to know you helped hire the most suitable person for a job.”

Resident seeks book

Nelson Mostert, an 84-year-old Somerset West resident, is appealing to the public for help in recovering a stolen book, a gift from his wife for their 56th wedding anniversary.

Suffering from short-term memory loss, he had inadvertently left the newly purchased book, War by Bob Woodward, at a parking payment machine at Somerset Mall about 18:00 on Saturday 7 December. The book, valued at R755, was purchased at Exclusive Books just before being misplaced.

On returning to retrieve it just 20 minutes later Mostert discovered it was missing. A review of CCTV footage with mall security revealed a white woman with ear-length blonde hair taking the book from the payment machine and placing it in her bag before leaving the area.

Mostert says he is not seeking to disclose personal information, but simply to identify a potential perpetrator in the theft of his property. He emphasises the sentimental value of the book, which was intended as a gift from his wife for their upcoming anniversary.

“This is not just an expensive item, it’s a symbol of my love from my wife, and I’m heartbroken to have lost it in this way,” he explains.”

Mostert hopes that by bringing the incident to public attention the woman who took the book may recognise its significance and return it.

V Anyone with information is urged to phone Mostert on 021 851 4645.

Probe into fatal incident at clinic

Strand police have opened an inquest docket after the death of an officer, who collapsed after she and her sister were the victims of a mugging outside the Gustrouw Community Day Clinic (CDC) last Tuesday (4 February).

Local WhatsApp community groups were abuzz following reports of a fatal shooting at the clinic, an assertion later dismissed by police. They confirmed that the victim, Funeka Nendwana died after two suspects had allegedly mugged her and another woman.

Police further stated the two were seated in a car outside the clinic, on the corner of Hasan Khan and Pietman Dreyer Avenue.

Two men approached the vehicle and grabbed Nendwana’s cellphone and robbed her sister of her wallet, containing her bank cards. Nendwana managed to get out of the vehicle, but collapsed and succumbed on the spot.

“An inquest docket has been opened and two cases of robbery are being investigated,” said a spokesperson for Strand police.

No arrests have been made yet.

Suzan Jantjies, spokesperson for Somerset West police, confirmed Nendwana was a sergeant employed at the Somerset West Police Station.

Gustrouw CDC security and nursing staff reacted as quickly and efficiently as possible to provide the deceased with emergency medical attention. Despite their efforts, they were unfortunately unable to save her. “We wish to clarify no shooting incident had occurred outside

the facility,” said Abulele Dyasi, spokesperson for the Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness (WCDHW). “We reported the unfortunate death to the South African Police Service in response to social-media claims that the 40-year-old had been shot or stabbed.

“The WCDHW extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the woman who sadly died outside the Gustrouw CDC. Our dedicated teams will offer counselling services to the family members and staff who have been affected by this tragic event, reflecting our commitment to caring for our community and those serving them.”

She further said Gustrouw CDC’s security would remain on high alert to prevent any further security incidents.

The WCDHW will continue to work closely with safety liaison officers, neighbourhood watches, clinic committees, ward councillors, sector policing, community policing forums, and all other community structures to safeguard their patients, Dyasi said.

DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette has reached out to Nendwana’s family, but was unable to obtain any comment by the time of going to press.

Baby Blossom becomes 14th save

The Helderberg Baby Saver, a safe-relinquishment option for newborns, has received its 14th baby since launching in 2014. Baby Blossom, a healthy and well cared-for newborn, was safely placed in the baby saver this month (February). “Amanda-Lea Jones and Frances Fuchs of the firstresponder team were on the scene within minutes, as were security officers from Secure Rite Security, which monitors the alarm, and GB Med Response paramedics, who examined little Blossom once she was taken out of the saver,” a media statement related. “Amanda-Lea then accompanied her in the ambulance to Helderberg Hospital, where she was attended to with much care and admitted to paediatrics.” The saver, located at Choices Crisis Pregnancy Centre in Somerset West, allows parents to relinquish their newborns anonymously and safely, aroundthe-clock. Babies are then medically checked, cared for and eventually placed for adoption through a partnership with the Wandisa Child Protection and Adoption Agency. The Helderberg Baby Saver’s founder, Sandy Immelman, emphasised the importance of safe relinquishment over abandonment and advocates for a safehaven law in South Africa. “We are very grateful that this precious little girl was safely relinquished, and not just abandoned,” she said. “Her mother or parents made a brave decision for her future well-being.”

Cancer project gifted

The coffers of Project Flamingo, founded by surgeon Dr Liana Roodt, were favourably boosted when it received a donation of R30 000 from representatives of SPAR Western Cape.

The donation originated from SPAR Western Cape’s annual cancer charity event held last October. The event, attended by 600 women, supports Cancervive, an organisation it has supported nationally for more than 10

years. Cancervive’s annual cancer ride does great work to spread awareness, educate and deliver a message of hope and encouragement to communities, many of whom do not have access to this information.

At the handover to Project Flamingo, Elsabe van Zyl-Felix, advertising manager for SPAR Western Cape, said it was a privilege to be in a position where women can make a difference for women. “This donation was essentially made

possible by hair-care, make-up and skin-care brand Hannon; its founder, Hannon Bothma, was a guest speaker at our October event. In light of it being a cancer charity event, he waived the usual guest-speaker fee. SPAR is donating [the fee] to Project Flamingo. I have often heard Dr Liana Roodt speaking on the radio and I am so pleased this group of women, all making waves in their fields, could make it happen here today.”

Roodt founded Project

Flamingo in 2010 after being deeply moved by the desperate need in the public-health sector. Her idea captured the hearts of friends and colleagues, and soon she had a trusted team to help her make quality compassionate cancer care available to all. A

specialist, she has won several research awards and was named one of the Top 10 Healthcare Innovators of 2014 by the UCT Graduate School of Business. Roodt is in private practice and works at Groote Schuur’s Breast and Endocrine Unit.

Robotic hip, knee replacements at Busamed Paardevlei

Busamed Private Hospital in Paardevlei, Somerset West, has marked a significant milestone in local health care by performing its first cementless robotic knee replacement surgery. Dr Koos Jordaan, a leading orthopaedic surgeon specialising in hip and knee replacements, led the groundbreaking procedure on Wednesday 5 February.

Jordaan, who joined Dr Jan-Louis van den Berg as part of the specialist arthroplasty team at Busamed, is a highly experienced surgeon with a strong background in academic medicine. He previously led the Stellenbosch University Unit for 10 years and worked at Tygerberg Hospital, gaining extensive experience with robotic surgery systems since 2018. He joined Busamed in August 2024 and has been instrumental in training the Busamed Paardevlei Private Hospital theatre team on the new technology.

While robotic surgery is not new, Jordaan emphasised the unique capabilities of the systems at Busamed. “We are all different, and robotic surgery allows us to personalise the procedure, adjusting alignments for each patient,” he explained. Jordaan highlighted the benefits of increased accuracy (up to half a millimetre), reduced soft tissue injury risk, and faster patient recovery. “It allows me as a surgeon to do operations accurately, consistently, and time-efficiently.”

Busamed has invested in two robotic systems, the Mako Stryker and CORI, for various orthopaedic applications, including hip and knee procedures. Jordaan has expertise in using the Mako Stryker system at Busamed, having served as a trainer for three years. He also operates weekly at Tygerberg Hospital, further demonstrating his expertise.

“Busamed has made a commitment to provide the best service, and part of that is acquiring these robotic systems,” Jordaan stated. He stressed that the technology is not a marketing tool, but a valuable asset to enhance patient care. “The benefit is for the patient. We provide the ability to walk again and have a good quality of life.”

Dr Koos Jordaan and Dr Kaylem Coetzee at

WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT, AND ROBOTIC SURGERY ALLOWS US TO PERSONALISE THE PROCEDURE, ADJUSTING ALIGNMENTS FOR EACH PATIENT.”

The robot’s haptic feedback feature provides safe boundaries during the procedure, physically preventing surgical errors. This, coupled with the increased precision, minimises risks and eases anxiety for the patient.

Jan Reyneke, the patient undergoing the first Mako Stryker robotic knee replacement at Busamed, expressed a mix of excitement and nervousness before the operation. “I’m confident it will be a success, and I think it will be life changing for me.” He also noted the appeal of a

quicker recovery time.

Jordaan acknowledged the hard work involved in bringing new advanced technology to Busamed and praised management’s commitment to providing cutting-edge care. He affirmed that South Africa is on par with global standards in knee surgery and encouraged patients to consult with their doctors about the available options. “Go and see your doctor, we are among the best, and with this technology even better.”

ABOUT THE MAKO STRYKER

It all starts with a CT scan that creates a 3D image of the patient’s unique anatomy. This information that a surgeon has never had before allows them to create a patient’s plan and assess and balance the joint. The Mako assists in ensuring a more accurately-placed knee replacement, with less bone and soft-tissue damage, which leads to earlier recovery for the patient.

In First Division B, Kuils River CC secured a commanding 82-run victory over Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC). Kuils River batted first after winning the toss, reaching a total of 166/10 in 47.2 overs at Sarepta Sports Ground.

HHCC started strongly with the ball, restricting Victoria’s early scoring and picking up crucial wickets. By the 16th over, Vics were struggling on 56/4, seemingly on the back foot. However, a resilient 107run partnership turned the tide, bringing the visitors back into the game and propelling them to a final total of 231. HHCC’s Marwaan Wanza (2/34) and Rasool Thomas (2/46) were the standout bowlers.

HHCC adopted a cautious approach in their chase, with the first wicket falling in the 14th over with the score at 43. However, after the drinks break and the 30th over, Victoria’s bowlers tightened their grip, leaving HHCC at a precarious 100/5. Just when it seemed the game was slipping away, a magnificent 89-run partnership between Thomas (57) and Yaasien Railoun (36) reignited HHCC’s hopes. The home team needed 39 runs from the final three overs and despite their best efforts, they fell agonisingly short by 11 runs, finishing on 220.

Lulu Boys claims the spoils Historic 10s tournament

The sun shone brightly on a hot and humid day in Strand this past Saturday (8 February) as well as the over 2 000 rugby enthusiasts who packed the Abattoir Sports Ground for the inaugural Grand Estates UR10s tournament, hosted by Strand United RFC.

The electrifying atmosphere crackled with excitement as 10 clubs from across Western Province battled it out in 21 thrilling matches, showcasing the very best of fast-paced, dynamic 10s rugby.

This groundbreaking tournament, a first for WP clubs in the Helderberg region, boasted a star-studded lineup. Rugby giants such as Eerste River, Vineyards, Young Peoples, Paarl Rangers, St George’s, Macassar, All Saints, Young Standards and Franschhoek all descended on Strand, eager to stake their claim to the coveted UR10s trophy.

From the first whistle, the action was relentless and the culmination of the day arrived with a trio of captivating cup finals. First up was the Rematch Sport Cup Final, a pulsating encounter between Young Standards and Young Peoples, where Young Standards walked away winners. Next, All Saints and Paarl Rangers locked horns in the fiery

Smokers Market Cup Final, leaving spectators breathless. All Saints claimed the spoils.

But the grand finale, the piéce de resistance, was the Grand Estates Cup Final, which saw St George’s and Vineyards locking horns. It was the former who emerged victorious, capturing the prestigious UR10s trophy and etching their name into the tournament’s history.
