Experts to the rescue

sidents of Gordon’s Bay woke up to n extraordinary sight early Tuesday morning (27 May) as a massive male elephant seal, estimated to weigh several tons, wandered from Gordon’s Bay Beach all the way up Sir Lowry’s Pass Road, surprising onlookers and causing minor traffic disruptions.

The unexpected visitor was first spotted

making its journey in the pre-dawn hours Security officers quickly responded to the scene, establishing a protective perimeter around the seal as it navigated across roads and even briefly rested against vehicles, causing some damage in its wake

“This is a wild animal that has never had human contact or smells around them,” cautioned Lisa Starr, founder of Helderberg Ocean Awareness Movement

Dozens of passers-by stopped to take photos and videos, as traffic officers closed some roads and rerouted traffic

“All the right people are on site, actively working with marine experts to devise the safest and least stressful method to return

the elephant seal to its natural habitat in the ocean,” said Starr

Initial reports indicated that the plan was to dart the animal and load it onto a trailer before transporting it to an undisclosed location By 10:00 on Tuesday, officials were still awaiting a trailer to arrive to carry out the rescue It was unclear whether an option was to lure the animal back into the ocean

In a statement, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA urged people to avoid the area “We’re actively working on a safe and stress-free plan to relocate this magnificent marine mammal,” the statement read “Please avoid the area to help us give the seal the space and calm it needs while we carry out the rescue ”

Inwoner in waaksaal ná huisbrand

brand beseer is.

Bel Papenfus by 0813161298 vir skenkings of navrae

“Die Amerikaanse skrywer Edward Hale het gesê: ‘I am only one, but still I am one I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.’

Local ‘pushing limits’

Wilmarie Kriel, a 36-yearold administrative manager, social-media account manager at Cosmetic Dental and content creator from Somerset West is now a semi-finalist in the prestigious Mrs South Africa 2025 competition.

Unapologetically herself, she is among remarkable women from all nine provinces who will soon join the upcoming Semi-final Showcase in the hope of taking another critical step closer to the coveted crown

“Living the questions now, I step boldly into each moment, seizing every opportunity to discover my true potential By engaging fully with life’s questions and uncertainties we open ourselves to growth, discovery and new possibilities.”

Mrs South Africa is far more than just a beauty pageant or modelling competition. It serves as a powerful platform for married women to embark on a life-changing experience, becoming voices for change while experiencing profound personal growth.

Beyond the style, sisterhood and excitement, the programme is, first and foremost, about self-development; changing one’s own life while actively working to assist and benefit those in need.

“This journey with Mrs South Africa has taught me that growth begins where comfort ends, pushing my limits with

grace, courage and unwavering faith,” said Kriel

“It has been one of growth, resilience and self-discovery. Once shy and afraid to share my voice, I faced challenges that tested my strength, particularly financial hurdles, but refused to let fear or circumstance define me. Instead, I chose to embrace every opportunity to push beyond my limits and trusting that growth comes from stepping into the unknown.

“What drew me to this programme was its power to transform, to empower women to stand boldly and speak authentically. Mrs South Africa has given me a platform to rise

above my fears, to inspire others with my voice and to realise I am capable of so much more than I ever imagined My goal now is to continue evolving, to serve as a beacon of courage and to use this journey to uplift and empower others to live their truths and seize their own opportunities.”

The Semi-final Showcase will take place at the Theatre of Marcellus, Emperor’s Palace in Kempton Park, Johannesburg at 20:00 on Friday 4 July. This glamorous event will culminate in the announcement of the top 30 finalists who will continue their quest for the crown.

“Each of our semi-finalists embodies the authenticity, courage and self-belief that Mrs South Africa represents,” said Joani Johnson, CEO of Mrs South Africa

“These extraordinary women are already using their voices and influence to stand in solidarity with vulnerable groups, and I’m incredibly proud of the ways in which they’re playing an active role in uplifting others That’s what Mrs South Africa is about; fulfilling your own true potential and influence as a changemaker.

“What has made this group of women so special is how they’ve embraced this opportunity to grow, develop, create lifelong memories, and join our unique sisterhood while making a meaningful difference in their communities ”

Gold and glory for local cycling star

YaseenGaffar

Nikalau Volsteedt, a Grade 12 learner of Parel Vallei High School, has returned from the African Continental Track Cycling Championships with an impressive medal haul, including a gold, two silvers, and a bronze

The 17-year-old’s exceptional performance at the competition also saw her shatter both the South African and African records in the individual pursuit event, solidifying her status as a rising star in the world of track cycling.

“It feels really special,” an ecstatic Volsteedt shared, reflecting on her experience representing SA on such a significant stage “I’m beyond proud to represent my country with other awesome athletes ”

Volsteedt, who has been track cycling for three years, got into the sport because “it looked like fun, and I was right – it is”!

Her passion and dedication have clearly paid off, with the African Championships standing out as a major highlight “To compete at continental level for my country is special,” she remarked

Another significant achievement for Volsteedt was her stellar performance at this year’s National Track Cycling Championships, where she “surprised” herself by winning seven individual gold medals

The gold medal she won in the

individual pursuit event at the continental showpiece was particularly meaningful for Volsteedt “All the medals mean a lot to me I went to Egypt in hopes of winning a gold medal in the individual pursuit race; adding an African and national record is a bonus ”

She attributes her record-breaking success in the race to a combination of rigorous training and a strategic approach during the race “It is definitely a mental game

My training was important to be able to compete here, but without a structured plan on the day, I wouldn’t have gotten there Having time splits each lap to ensure that you don’t burn yourself out at the end is crucial ”

Competing at the Cairo International Velodrome was an experience in itself “The venue was amazing This track is made of wood, so it feels so fast,” Volsteedt explained “It was hot summer temperatures, so the racing started late in the afternoon The specta-

tors were so supportive cheering us on ”

Balancing her demanding training schedule and competitions with her academic commitments at Parel Vallei High presents a significant challenge for Volsteedt –especially in her matric year “It’s definitely a challenge; it’s really hard trying to fit in training with loads of schoolwork ”

Volsteedt’s qualification for the championships involved meeting specific time standards and sending a letter of interest months in advance Her strong showing at nationals, where she secured numerous victories, ultimately sealed the deal

Looking ahead, Volsteedt plans to allow for her recent achievements to sink in and focus on her academics However, her aspirations in track cycling remain high “I’ll also be building up for the elite level since I would like to go back to continental champs next year,” she revealed

For other young, aspiring cyclists, Volsteedt offers invaluable advice: “Dream big, focus on the small steps and remember to have fun, because why would you do it otherwise? Also, keep on trying Failure is part of the process ” Volsteedt expressed immense gratitude to her parents for their unwavering support throughout her journey “I would like to thank my parents for supporting me in this entire journey – on the sidelines with encouraging words and, of course, the financing part to help me reach my dreams ”

Call for community to contribute to netball player’s Dubai dream

A Nomzamo learner’s natural ability has taken her to the top of girls’ netball, but now financial circumstances are threatening her dream of touring in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Alwaba Mapasa participated in the four-day Rhodes Quality Netball Tournament at La Rochelle Girls’ High School in Paarl, which took place from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 April. The tournament featured first teams from across the South African School Netball A League going head-tohead.

The 17-year-old’s performance over the four days led to her being selected as one of 40 players for the Travel and Sport Invitational Sevens Netball Team.

The team will undertake a tour to Dubai later this year to compete in an international tournament.

“I didn’t know players were being selected to the team, but on the final day of the tournament it was announced,” Alwaba recalls.

The Grade 11 learner of Parel Vallei High School was part of the school’s first netball team, where she plays goal attack and goal shooter. She has been playing netball since age seven.

“I was not really into netball, but kept receiving compliments about my ability and how good I am,” the modest teen recalls.

Alwaba admits the game and the skills required came naturally to her and helped her find herself, with the netball court offering her an escape

“Playing netball gives me confidence and I feel less insecure

when I am on the court.”

If she is able to raise the funds Alwaba will be part of the tournament in Dubai from Wednesday 26 November until Thursday 4 December, where she will experience the culture and essence of the UAE while also participating in an international netball tournament.

“We haven’t yet been told what exactly we’ll be doing, but I know we are playing against some of the strongest teams in Dubai.”

Alwaba is excited at the opportunity and hopes the tour will help her improve her netball skills and gain new insights

“The tour will allow me to get a different perspective on netball,” she says.

Her proud mother Yolanda was over the moon when she heard of her daughter’s selection for the tour, but also deeply concerned about how they would afford it.

“The tour costs R55 490, which includes travel insurance,” she points out.

To raise the money Yolanda is selling scones in her communi-

ty in a fundraising drive to see her daughter’s talents take her abroad.

She is now turning to the Helderberg community for help, asking for donations to make her child’s dream come true

“We are hoping everything will go according to our plan and Alwaba will be able to play in Dubai,” Yolanda saud.

The up-and-coming netball player believes the tour is only the beginning for her and hopes it would jumpstart her professional career.

“I really would like to see myself continue to improve and hopefully play professionally, so I never have to stop playing.” If you would like to donate to Alwaba’s dream or would like more information, phone Yolanda on 074 449 2518

Acclaimed ‘Curl

Up & Dye’ is back

Curl up & Dye is on at The Playhouse Theatre in Somerset West next month (June)

The theatre production by Sue PamGrant and DJ Grant was first staged in 1989, to huge acclaim in South Africa and Europe. It won a Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival in 1990 and it was written up in the New York Times

The narrative takes place in a hair salon in Joubert Park, Johannesburg. The salon is on its last legs and mirrors the realities of SA at that time (1989). The salon was in what was termed a “grey area”. The Apartheid Group Areas Act was still in force in 1989, but high density areas such as Joubert Park, Hillbrow and Yeoville were grey areas, where people across the apartheid race classifications were living. This led to many landlords extorting exorbitant rents. It was also a time for an extraordinary diversity across the so-called colour bar – with South Africans living together in congested and crowded blocks of flats.

The play is a vivid archive of our apartheid past.

There is a heart-breaking scene which references the draconian pencil test, administered by the apartheid regime to classify people white: If their hair passed the “pencil test”, they passed as white. Rolene, the proprietor of the salon, submitted – and passed. One feels sick and saddened watching. The past may be another country and yet it isn’t as the ruptures linger as palimpsests and ghost-

productions including “Lui Maar op, Belinda” alongside her legal career and interests in yoga and hip

ly emblems which we cannot erase.

The show can be seen at the local theatre venue located in Swalle Street from Wednesday 11 to Saturday 21 June, with evening shows at 19:30 and matinees at 15:00 on two specified days. For more information, visit www.theplayhouse.org.za/shows/curl-up-dye-2025.

Tickets, from R100 to R140, can be booked via Webtickets.

Dzire packs big punch

Suzuki is on a roll with new product launches and this month it is the turn of its AB sedan segment marker leader, the Dzire, which is India's best-selling sedan

After 11 years on our market

we are getting a new body, new engine, new platform – the new Dzire sub-compact from Suzuki is geared up to obliterate the opposition Not only is the pricing really sharp, but specification on the GL+ is excellent and in addition rear leg room is good and the boot is big, for the AB segment of the market

For the launch, we drove a long loop from Rosebank, south of Johannesburg, and back to the Digital Dome at Wits, going via the old women's prison at Constitution Hill for lunch A good mix of city traffic and open road

Undoubtedly, the Dzire will make an excellent small company car, as the boot just gives one more security for bags and other high value articles.

This new Dzire is very good looking from all angles, even a little sporty, especially at the back

The interior has been upgraded and offers all the essential items, even power points and a vent for the rear Two things which I don't like much is the 7" touchscreen in a housing big enough for a 9" screen and the light upholstery, but both highly subjective Still, it boasts a pleasant cabin with

comfortable seats and a feeling of space The GL+ varient has cruise control, reverse camera and a digital airconditioner The boot is 100 litres bigger than that of the Swift This little sedan has the same Z12E three-cylinder turbo mill and gearboxes as the Swift Suzuki claims a fuel consumption of 4 4 l/100 km but I think five or just above five is more realistic. I would say there is adequate power but performance is not that sprightly

The only issues I found were the very light-cream interior upholstery and at altitude the engine works hard, requiring much gear changing At the coast this is not an issue

The Dzire is built in India for the sub-continent and surrounding markets, which means their tastes in upholstery and specifi-

cation are not always 100% the same as ours Unfortunately, we are such a small market it is not always possible to supply us with our first choice and as a result we have the very light upholstery for the moment If sales justify it, they will supply a more suitable colour for our market In the showroom, the light interior gives an impression of lightness and space so it may appeal to private buyers

The specification of our version differs quite a bit from the Indian home market Styling is more restrained with less use of chrome for our cars We get a CVT instead of their AMT, we lose the leather steering wheel, sunroof, 360° camera, wireless charging and get a more basic infotainment system We still get all the basics with cruise control, automatic cli-

mate control with rear AC vents, and a multi-info display Crucially, six airbags, ESC, rear parking sensors, and ISOFIX mounts are standard across the range

The new Dzire enjoys a fivestar adult and four-star child occupant protection Indian Ncap rating It indeed has all the safety kit one would expect

The direct competition is the Honda Amaze, Hyundai Grand i10

and Kia Pegas, but all are more expensive, being R25 000 to R50 000 more Volkwagen's Polo sedan is a R100 000 more

The base GA 5MT is R224 900, the GL+ 5MT R246 900 and the CVT version R266 900 I would recommend the CVT model Dzire has a five-year/200 000 km promotional warranty and includes a four-year/60 000 km service plan

Father-son duo climb tennis ranks

Yaseen Gaffar

Athletic prowess and enduring family passion is on full display at Somerset West tennis courts where Denley Richards and his son Clinton, a duo whose names have become synonymous with excellence in South African tennis, are in action.

Both currently hold the coveted number-one ranking in their respective age categories, a testament to decades of dedication and an unbreakable bond forged on the court.

Denley’s (81) journey with tennis began at the tender age of 10. His love for the sport deepened over the years, leading him to represent the Eastern Province (EP) provincial team in Port Elizabeth (now Gqeberha). Since 1995, when Tennis South Africa formed its masters’ division, Denley has been a consistent and dominant force

He has proudly represented SA eight times as a masters’ player, travelling the globe to compete in world championships in India, the USA and Europe.

A testament to his mastery, Denley once reached the finals of a world championship and achieved a world ranking of third at age 55. Last year, he clinched a significant victory in Cape Town.

Even now, he prefers to play down two age groups (10 years younger) in tournaments, seeking tougher competition to fuel his enduring passion.

For Clinton (55), tennis has been a lifelong companion.

“Since Clinton was born, he’s been coming to tennis clubs with us his whole life,” Denley recalls.

Clinton’s own career blossomed, becoming a junior under-18 doubles champion and representing Gauteng East inter-provincially As a senior, he has been a fixture in Cape Town tennis for about 25 years, becoming a national champion and representing the country in 2017.

The Richards father-and-son duo are not just individual stars; they are a formidable doubles team. They are the current doubles champions of

the Somerset West Country Club

– a title Clinton has remarkably won 10 times

“It’s a passion growing up,” Clinton reflects on his tennis journey. “[There has been] tremendous highs and tremendous lows. It’s the coming back from defeats and setbacks that has helped me not to give up in life. I’m disciplined and committed.”

This discipline extends to their training, as both amateurs play three to four days a week.

Denley, a retired project manager, cherishes the competitive aspect of the game “I enjoy the competition and tough games. It promotes a healthy lifestyle

and I’m still enjoying it after all these years,” he points out.

Remarkably, Denley’s path to continued success has not been without its hurdles. A decade ago, he snapped a tendon in his left foot, with doctors advising he would never play tennis again.

Undeterred, Denley defied the prognosis, proving the medical personnel wrong to return to the court and reclaim his number one ranking “Be prepared to start from ground zero,” he advises, highlighting the mental fortitude required to overcome such setbacks

For both Denley and Clinton,

. . . tremendous highs and tremendous lows. It’s the coming back from defeats and setbacks that has helped me in life not to give up. “

the mental game and strategy of tennis are key as they’ve grown older. “A lot of it is mental and strategy; you can feel you are getting on top of your opponent mentally and it gives you drive,” Denley relates Clinton recently achieved his personal milestone of reaching the number one ranking in his age group for the first time Denley, on the other hand, has held the top spot on and off since 1995.

The younger Richards openly acknowledges his father’s influence in his tennis career, stating: “He inspires me, he’s my hero and mentor and I look up to him, with regard to his achievements in the sport. He’s made me a better player and a better person.”

The Richards’ legacy extends beyond the father-son duo, with Clinton noting he has a nephew also playing tennis in Johannesburg.

Looking ahead, the Richards pairing have more competitions on the horison, and continue to play in the Cape Winelands and Cape Town league. Their shared ambition is to continue their dominance locally and nationally, and potentially compete in the world championships.

Masters tennis champions Denley and Clinton Richards are both ranked number one in their respective age groups.

Geenkee aanBerge
