Buurtwagte kry erkenning

Jamey Gordon

‘Defrauders’ in court

The pair of tour organisers who were arrested for allegedly defrauding many locals out of thousands of rands invested in an overseas trip that never materialised found themselves in the dock earlier this week.

The female suspects, aged 59 and 53, appeared in the Somerset West Magistrates’ Court on Monday (25 November) presumably on charges of fraud, theft and money laundering. This after they were apprehended on Friday (22 November) for allegedly having conned around 80 victims, including many Helderbergers, out of their hardearned savings forked out for a once-ina-lifetime tour of Thailand.

According to provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Malcolm Pojie the suspects were arrested by investigators attached to the provincial Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in connection with the fraud amounting to about R1,9 million for the promised trip.

“[The] investigation reveals that between 1 June 2022 and 30 July 2024, a total number of 80 victims saw an advertisement on social media platforms about a trip to Thailand,” said Pojie. “In the advertisement it was stated that each person should pay an amount of R26 000, which will include travelling as well as accommodation costs. It is believed almost all the victims paid the required amount as per agreement into the bank accounts of the two suspects.

“When the victims realised the trip was not going to materialise they reported it to different police stations across the country as far as Gauteng, Northern Cape, Eastern Cape and

Western Cape. The cases were centralised in the Western Cape and, on completion, the suspects were interviewed and were unable to provide a satisfactory explanation of what happened to the money. The two suspects were subsequently arrested at their residences in Strand on Friday 22 November.”

They remain in custody until their next expected court appearance on Wednesday 4 December for formal bail applications.

Locals forming part of the larger group claiming to have been deceived by the ostensibly reputable tour organisers expressed their hopes for justice to prevail considering recent developments in the case. “Finally the wheels of justice are turning in our favour,” said Fiona Stewe. “We thought this day would never come.”

The 58-year-old Firgove resident, like many others from her area, Raithby, Strand and Somerset West, responded to an advertisement in 2022 for a 16-day trip to Thailand, priced at R26 000 per person (“Many duped in tour ‘scam’,” DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette, 26 June). It is believed the opportunity was respectively advertised by the two suspects, one as a tour operator known for organising successful international tours with her husband and the other a fellow operator under a business name. The trip was scheduled for 20 June to 6 July this year.

Heather Mansfield, joined by a group of others outside the Strand Magistrates’ Court, where the suspects were expected to appear, demanded: “We want our money back” – a sentiment shared by the group. Many said they are still furious over the fraud they had fallen victim to, and held a strong hope for justice.

Man (33) sterf op sy verjaardag

Inferno claims one

One person died and three others were left displaced after a devastating fire in Nomzamo on Sunday (24 November).

Authorities were called into action after the raging blaze broke out in the mainly informal settlement in Strand in the early hours.

Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Services, said firefighting crews from Strand and Sir Lowry’s Pass stations were dispatched to the scene following an emergency call of structures alight in Simon Street at 03:25.

“A formal dwelling and three informal structures were destroyed, leaving three people displaced,” he said. “One adult male succumbed to fatal burn wounds and was declared deceased on scene. The fire was extinguished at 04:25. The cause of the incident is still undetermined and will be investigated.”

Lwandle police spokesperson Sergeant Mthokozisi Gama confirmed an inquest docket had been opened following the tragedy, which claimed the life of the 49-year-old man. “Police suspect no foul play at this stage,” he said.

Model rescued from ledge on scenic road

Thanks to the swift response of dedicated Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR) workers and volunteers, a model was successfully rescued following an attempt to recover her bag from a thieving baboon.

The mission was initiated late last Monday afternoon (18 November) after the woman was left stranded on the ledge of a cliff near Dappat se Gat, between the Steenbras River Mouth and Kogel Bay Beach on Clarence Drive.

“I was doing a modelling shoot on the beach when a baboon came and grabbed my bag,” Mariana Keyser recalled.

“As soon as I saw the baboon had left my bag alone and left, I started climbing up to retrieve it. When I reached my bag, I looked down and only then realised how high up I was.

“I thought it would be easier to keep going up, but when I reached about three metres to the top, I saw all the moss and made the decision to not go any further. I found some ground to stand on and asked my photographer to get some help.”

An urgent call was made to the emergency number, which prompted the rescue mission.

Once on scene, a rescuer abseiled down to Keyser, who was then placed into a rescue harness and lowered down the rest of the seaside cliff.

A drone from the provincial Department of Health and Wellness’ EMS Drone Unit was used to monitor the team’s progress down the cliff, while also alerting them to the movements of the remaining baboons.

“The baboons sat next to me while I waited for help, the whole time.

The drone’s presence, together with its powerful spotlight, quickly drove the weary troop off.

“Two baboons came to sit right next to me; I thought about climbing up again, but knew that it would be better to wait. I started singing very calming songs to try and be calm.

“I got stressed out only when a baby baboon wanted to come to me; it’s the only time the male baboon became a little aggressive,” Keyser said.

“As soon as it was dark, the baby went to sleep, so they calmed down. The baboons sat next to me while I waited for help, the whole time. When help arrived the baboons moved away.

“I have never been so happy in my life to see a person and we abseiled down.” .

The successful rescue mission was concluded shortly after 23:00, thanks to the efforts of all the rescue agencies involved..

V WSAR urges the public to save and share the emergency contact number (021 937 0300) and support their efforts with lifesaving donations via its crowdfunding campaign (https:// www.backabuddy.co.za/sos-for-life-savingequipment) or by visiting https://wsar.org.za/ support-us/.

Driver loses control on Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road

An accident involving a single vehicle on Old Sir Lowry’s Pass Road around 14:30 last Wednesday afternoon (20 November), resulted in minor injuries to the vehicle’s occupants. It is believed the driver of the Volkswagen vehicle lost control and veered off the road into a fence before coming to a standstill. The injured passengers were treated by emergency services personnel on the scene.

Accidents spark concern

Barend J Williams

Road accidents across the Helderberg over the past two weeks have left several people injured, raising concerns about road safety in the region.

Authorities are urging drivers and pedestrians to be vigilant, adhere to traffic rules and take precautions to prevent further incidents.

The most recent accident occurred in Gordon’s Bay Drive, Strand, when a motorcycle and light motor vehicle collided between Broadway Boulevard and Jan Bruin Street at 17:51 on Monday 18 November.

The motorcyclist and his passenger sustained serious injuries and were taken to hospital. Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for the City of Cape Town’s Traffic Services, confirmed police had recorded the accident.

Just a few days earlier, on Saturday 16 November, a burst tyre caused a driver to lose control of his vehicle on the N2 outbound, just after Baden Powell Drive. The accident, which occurred around 16:30, resulted in slight injuries to the driver.

Two days before, around 17:00, an 11-year-old boy from Casablanca, Strand, was struck by a silver Opel while running across Broadway Boulevard. The primary-school learner, who had been returning from the shop and was navigating

heavy traffic, sustained a minor injury to his left arm.

The driver of the vehicle and boy’s mother, both visibly shaken, comforted each other after the collision.

Emergency services were immediately called to the scene by members of the Casablanca Neighbourhood Watch, who also informed the boy’s family. The boy was taken to hospital for observation.

Earlier that week a vehicle carrying berries overturned on Sir Lowry’s Pass at 16:30 on Tuesday (12 November).

The driver, a 32-year-old man from Grabouw, swerved to avoid an object in the road as he approached a bend. The vehicle rolled, spilling berries across two lanes and causing a traffic disruption. The driver sustained minor injuries to his left arm and was later transported to the hospital by

his employer.

Neither the City’s Traffic Services nor the provincial traffic team responded to the scene.

On Monday 11 November another serious accident occurred on Sir Lowry’s Pass Road in Gordon’s Bay, when two vehicles collided head-on at 15:48.

One driver sustained serious injuries, while the other was lightly injured. The accident was recorded by the Gordon’s Bay police, and the road was cleared by 16:23.

These recent accidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers on the roads and the importance of motorists staying alert. Authorities are urging all road users to ensure their vehicles are in a safe and good condition, follow speed limits, and remain vigilant at all times.

Old-style Christmas market is back

Jamey Gordon

Many Helderbergers cherish fond memories of the once popular Strawberry Festival, which was the annual highlight on the community’s social calendar.

The switching-on of the Christmas lights, which lit up Main Road in the Somerset West central business district, is an old tradition spreading endless joy during the season to be jolly.

Among many highlights was the mass carol-singing followed by the joyous switch-on and delight of numerous market stalls for much browsing pleasure.

With hopes of reviving the unforgettable festival while promoting Somerset West as a tourist destination and supporting local businesses, community representatives aided by representatives of the the City of Cape Town rallied together to realise the Somerset West Christmas Market, which will take place throughout December.

DELIGHT OF THE FESTIVAL

Organiser Moira Meershoek said the market was inspired not only by her love for Christmas time and markets, but the festive cheer and celebration that brings people together after a long year.

With flashbacks of precious childhood memories of the lights, which attracted people from all over, Meershoek revelled in the delight of the festival, which was a great source of pride for the town.

“It was so nice; it felt like the whole community would come out and

celebrate the festive season together – it just made it feel like Christmas in a small town. Like we had something really special and unique,” she recalled.

“Unfortunately, due to petty crime and inadequate security measures, it was announced that the festival had to be shutdown and the next thing we knew, the lights were also gone. Somerset West was given meagre replacement lights [by the municipality] and the town has never really had the same Christmas spirit since. So the inspiration was simply to bring some of that magic back to Somerset West in a safer setting.”

SEARCH FOR A VENUE

With the foundation of a safe environment, appropriate licensing, quality vendors and reliable suppliers, Meershoek said that the goal is to establish the market as an annual celebration that brings the community together, supports local businesses and charities, showcases local talent in various forms, and recreates the Christmas magic of the old town many locals grew up knowing and for future generations to remember.

Meershoek further shared that planning alongside her husband, Simon, started more than a year ago, with the search for a venue and the market finding its “home” at Generation School Somerset West.

The next step was attending to all the licensing and permit requirements of the City of Cape Town, vetting hundreds of vendor applications and arranging everything from musicians, performers, and the beer garden to the access-controlled kids’ zone by Mess Makers.

FAIRY-LIGHT TUNNEL

The market will boast a “good mix” of more than 70 vendors comprising artisans, craftsmen and retailers offering a wide range of high-quality products. It will be held at the school venue at 5 Copacobana Boulevard on the first three weekends in December (Friday 6 and Saturday 7, 13 and 14, and 20 and 21 December; from 16:00 to 22:00).

Visitors will enter the market through a fairy-light tunnel, sponsored by Stellar Lighting. In the middle of the courtyard a 2-metre tall authentic German Christmas tree, imported in cold storage from Bavaria and sponsored by Yes Exclusive Flowers, will take centre stage.

COMMUNITY FOCUSED

“We are hosting a very special opening ceremony with the switching on of the tree lights on Friday 6 December,” said Meerhoek.

“Local councillor Norman McFarlane will do the honours, and then we’ve invited our charity of choice, The Barking Ark, to say a words, as well as Mariette du Toit-Helmold, former head of Cape Town Tourism and current manager of the Village Collective to tell everyone about this wonderful community initiative.

“There will be some very special performances from a group of very talented local school learners, all of whom have been coordinated by Duncan Combe, the head of the music department at Parel Vallei High School. So it’s going to be a very community focused, feel-good experience.”

Furthermore, Pam Golding Properties will host a “Santa-meet-and-greet” and “Letters to Santa” corner, where

children can write and decorate letters to Santa, and then personally deliver them to him and have a photograph taken.

There may also be a few surprise visits from the Grinch too.

SHOW YOUR SUPPORT

“We want the Helderberg to show up and support all of our local vendors. A lot of hard work and planning has gone into this event, not only from our side, but from the vendors’ side too.

“At the end of the day they are your local small business owners and they would really appreciate your support,” implored Meershoek.

“They have been planning their stalls, preparing their stock and gearing up for this for months, so please come down and show your support for their efforts. You won’t be disappointed.”

Opening ceremony programme

. Host Pieter Kotze, co-owner of Chas Everitt Somerset West, presents the welcome address and “thank you” to the main sponsors at 19:30; . performance at 19:45; . special address by Ward 84 councillor Norman MacFarlane and the switching-on of the Christmas tree and lights at 20:00; . performance at 20:15; . address by Mariette du Toit-Helmbold, former head of Cape Town Tourism and current manager of The Village Collective at 20:30; . address by Marie-Claire Knoop and Mandy Mann of The Barking Ark at 20:45; . opening prayer by Pastor Wendy Grages of Hillsong Somerset West at 21:00; and . closing performance at 21:10.

Spate of break-ins across basin

The threat of an intruder on one’s property and taking one’s belongings became a reality for four Helderberg residents over the past two weeks.

Two house break-ins and a home invasion occurred in Gordon’s Bay, while Strand police confirmed a house break-in was also reported in the neighbouring suburb.

The latest house break-in occurred at between 02:00 and 03:00 at a residence in Augusta Street on the Fairview Golf Estate in Gordon’s Bay on Saturday 18 November.

A spokesperson for Gordon’s Bay police said the intruders apparently forcibly opened a sliding door to gain access to the residence and steal items. A case of house break-in is under investigation.

“Fingerprint experts were on the scene to lift prints, and if any matches are found we will be notified,” the spokesperson said.

Three days earlier (Wednesday 13 November) burglars gained access to a property in Karee Street by breaking the lock and proceeded to steal items from an informal dwelling. Gordon’s Bay police confirmed a case of house break-in and theft is under investigation.

Another home invasion occurred in Drommedaris Street, Gordon’s Bay, around 03:00 on Sunday 10 November. The suspect managed to escape.

Information surrounding this case is unclear, but the spokesperson said that in an attempt to getting away, the intruder threw a brick at the homeowner’s dog, killing the pet.

The spokesperson police confirmed a case had been opened, but an arrest was

still forthcoming. “The case is still under investigation, but we cannot provide additional information at this stage,” he said.

In the incident in Strand, a resident narrowly escaped harm during a house robbery in Hangklip Street around 22:45 on Saturday 9 November.

“The victim spotted a bottle of alcohol on the counter of his braai room,” said Strand police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nico Beukes. “Moments later an 18-year-old suspect jumped from behind the counter and lunged at him with a knife.”

The victim reacted quickly, using a chair to shield himself, and the suspect fled.

The resident gave chase, and Strand police apprehended the suspect a few doors away. A case of house robbery was opened and the investigation is ongoing.

Soektog na man duur ’n jaar

Barend J. Williams

Dié saak gee hom egter langer as ’n jaar ná Owies se verdwyning nog slapelose nagte.

“Mense wag soms dae voordat hulle ’n verdwyning by die polisie aanmeld.

A tip-off led police to a suspected drug house in 16th Street in Broadlands Village, Rusthof, where they found tik of varying quantities, a scale and an undisclosed amount of money, a provincial police statement confirmed. A 49-year-old man was arrested and expected to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court after being charged.

Woman attacked

A case of rape is currently being investigated by authorities after a woman was allegedly attacked by four men, three of them unknown, in Strand.

According to a Strand police report the incident reportedly took place in Sercor Park between 23:00 on Friday 16 and 05:30 on Saturday 17 November.

It has been reported that the 25year-old victim and her boyfriend planned to spend the night in an informal dwelling in Annike Close, which he had rented for them. They had a few drinks and went to sleep without any intimate interaction.

The following morning the victim reportedly woke up to find her boyfriend missing and the owner of the structure, along with three other unknown men, present in the dwelling. Realising she was naked from the waist down, she attempted to leave but was allegedly assaulted. Nevertheless, she managed to escape by screaming for help and was subsequently discovered by a passerby in Main Road, according to the report.

Strand police’s spokesperson Warrant Officer Nico Beukes confirmed the case has been handed over to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

“No arrests have been made and no-one has been charged,” he said. Strand police have implemented awareness programmes to combat rape cases and encourage the community to take precautions. “Avoid dark areas, do not walk alone, and always inform someone of your whereabouts,” Beukes said.

Geliefde Helderberger sterf

Almal is reeds oorlede.

Nonnie was die tweede oudste kind.

Appeal for donations

Tereo, located in Somerset West’s Victoria Road, is a special-purpose school for street children and those at risk in the Helderberg.

Established in 1999, it caters for Grade 1 to 7 learners who face severe poverty, violence and trauma. For these children, Tereo is often the sole source of stability, nourishment and clothing, with some even managing household responsibilities.

Tereo seeks to transform children’s lives by breaking the poverty cycle and nurturing self-sufficiency. Its offerings include robust education, healthcare, meals, counselling, family aid and community outreach. Despite food donations from local supermarkets throughout the year, these donations halt from December to February, leaving many families vulnerable.

To address this gap we aim to provide food parcels with essentials such as rice, samp, beans, tuna, cooking oil, sugar, coffee, maize meal, and soup packs to each family. We appeal to DistrictMail & Helderberg Gazette readers for donations to sustain families during this critical period.

Donations can be delivered to Tereo during office hours. Please call 021 851 4005 or 082 678 9077 to confirm availability for drop-off.

Your generosity can significantly impact these families’ lives. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Trompoppies vereer

Joubert Primêre Skool verlede Dinsdag (19 November) tydens ’n spesiale TrompoppieMeisies-bemagtigingsgeleentheid gevier. Die span, wat in Augustus as “kampioene der kampioene” by die Boland-trompoppiekampioenskap gekroon is, het die vierde plek by die Suid-Afrikaanse kampioenskap behaal. New chapter for Summies learners

Seven learners of Somerset West Primary School (SWPS) are celebrating the golden opportunity to embark on the next chapter of their schooling at the high schools of their dreams.

Leighton Hendricks, Solomon Nyashanu, Caleb Claasen, Marcel November, Kelsey Fanie, Emily Geswindt and Direll Levendal are recipients of bursaries to Hoërskool Stellenbosch, La Rochelle Girls’ High School in Paarl, Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch and SACS in Newlands, respectively.

While the learners are thrilled about this milestone, some admit to feeling nervous about leaving the comforts of Summies.

“This is the first time I’m going to be far from home,” shared Caleb Claasen, a member of Western Province primary schools’ athletics and cross-country teams. “It’s a little scary.”

Others are confident that the values instilled at Somerset West Primary

will guide them in this next chapter.

“Summies taught me how to be a better person, because it instilled discipline in me,” said Direll Levendal, the school’s head girl and a Western Province under-13 netball and indoor netball player.

The learners expressed gratitude to their parents and teachers. “We just want to thank our parents and teachers who believed in us and helped us,” said Emily Geswindt, a Western Province under-13 hockey player.

SWPS deputy principal Herman Poole highlighted the school’s commitment to nurturing its learners.

“It is a privilege to have these learners at our school and to help them achieve their goals,” he said. “We hope they understand the opportunities they have been given and grab them with both hands.”

As they prepare for high school, the learners carry the discipline and dedication cultivated during their time at SWPS along with them. The bursaries are not just a reward for their talents, but also a testament to the values the school has instilled.

PV learners strut their stuff

The 2024 Laager Schools Design and Science Competition, held at Sandbaai Hall in Hermanus, showcased significant creative and scientific achievements by learners in the Western Cape.

Parel Vallei High School learners excelled in the competition, which highlighted the innovation and sustainable solutions of the region’s youth as part of the provincial education department’s STEAM curriculum.

Supported by Laager Rooibos, The Creative Space and TDL Advertising, the event encouraged the development of creativity and sustainability among youth.

Participants from nine schools, including 42 learners, presented stunning 2D and 3D designs to reflect Laager’s vibrant logo and colours.

Candice Sessions, Laager’s marketing manager, emphasised the promise and potential of the youth in science and arts sectors. Grade 9 learners also tackled innovative recycling methods for Laager Rooibos tea, supported by lab resources and guidance, culminating in detailed reports.

The competition winners across various categories were awarded certificates, Laager Rooibos hampers, cash prizes and design kits.

COMPETITION RESULTS

The esteemed panel of judges – Taylum Meyer (Local Life), Lee-Ann Pringle (DCES Visual Art and Design, education department), Frieda Lloyd (Hermanus Tourism), and Lindsay Leppan (TDL Advertising) – evaluated the entries and selected the winners. Every participant received a certificate, with top finishers receiving Laager Rooibos hampers, cash prizes, and design kits.

Mondeor impresses visitors

Earlier this month Keller Education hosted members of Onderwijs Maak Je Samen, a Dutch organisation of school principals, at Mondeor Eco School in Somerset West.

The school impressed with its holistic education model, combining academic learning with emotional well-being and life skills, highlighting the positive impact of innovative and collaborative educational approaches.

WARM WELCOME

The morning at Mondeor Eco School started with a warm welcome from primary school principal Anne Lett and her team, emphasising learner-centred learning through engaging programmes.

A standout moment was the South African welcome treats and packed lunches made by learners, highlighting the school’s commitment to practical life skills and preparation for life beyond the classroom.

PRIDE IN PRACTICE

Mondeor’s learner guides, filled with enthusiasm, led a tour showcasing their school. They engaged the Dutch principals with questions and shared their learning experiences, highlighting Mondeor’s supportive environment.

This demonstrated Keller Education’s belief that learners thrive when they feel valued and connected.

WHERE LEARNING MEETS WELL-BEING

One of the morning’s most powerful moments was observing Mondeor’s Care Circles in action. These weekly circles provide a safe space for learners to express themselves and support one another. Seeing them engage openly and empathetically, even in front of visitors, was a clear demonstration of the transformative power of focusing on emotional intelligence and well-being.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION

Keller Education staffers and the Dutch principals were impressed by Mondeor’s dedication to inclusive education, particularly seen at the School of Skills. This school emphasises vocational and life skills, with a view to embedding inclusivity in society. Learners benefit from personalised academic support, hands-on experience and a purposeful education, which equips them for life beyond school. This inclusive approach ensures every learner, regardless of background or ability, feels successful and valued.

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE

Mondeor Eco School received the Keller Education Flagship School Award for its dedication to education and partnership with Keller Education.

This award recognises Mondeor as an innovative and inspirational centre focused on the Keller Methodology, positively impacting both learners and the community. The award also aims to inspire other schools to pursue innovative, learner-focused education.

LASTING PARTNERSHIP

Everyone left with new inspiration and perspectives. The visit highlighted how collaboration can drive change in schools. By sharing ideas and practices, teachers expand their horizons and strengthen their commitment to transformative learning.

Keller Education forms partnerships that bring best practices in education about, where schools become flagships. Whether veteran or new, Keller Education enables excellence.

Creating community for the ‘gift season’

Forget rocking chairs and bingo nights, an organisation launched in the Helderberg isn’t your average retirement club!

The group is all about helping people rediscover their purpose and navigate the exciting “gift season” of life between age 50 and 75.

catering for its own unique needs.

Expanding across South Africa comes with hurdles, but 50plus Skills has a secret weapon – its members.

“Many of our national members have been with us from day 1,” Smith said, adding that these members have passion, experience and are eager to share their knowledge.

Lynda Smith, co-founder of 50plus Skills, knows this transition first-hand. Facing an empty nest and a career change at 50, she realised the babyboomer generation wasn’t built to retire the way their parents were. Inspired, she set out to create a space where experienced individuals could “learn, serve and earn together”.

learn new skills and create purpose,” said Smith.

50plus Skills isn’t just about social gatherings. It sees the “gift season” as a prime time to contribute and share wisdom, bridging the gap that exists among experienced individuals, businesses and NPOs.

The future looks bright for 50plus Skills. It aims to become a national force and even expand to other African countries.

Its vision? A South Africa where seasoned individuals can serve as mentors, coaches and active members of society.

Its “Next Chapter” programme helps companies equip older employees for the changing workplace. It also offers peer-topeer learning opportunities and an online learning academy.

Smith emphasised: “It’s not about retirement, it’s about working together. Always stronger together.”

50plus Skills has a message for business leaders and society as a whole: embrace the changing demographics.

The recent launch event marks a new chapter for people over 50 in the Helderberg. With a focus on local communities, the organisation offers them paid memberships.

For a small annual fee, members gain access to regular meet-ups, online resources and networking opportunities. “It’s a place to belong, stay relevant,

Big catch for young angling talents in WC

The interactive fishing and tackle store, Fishing Republic, is a privately-owned business with a passion for fishing, dedicated to uplifting, guiding and investing time in nurturing young anglers. On Sunday 10 November, the owner, Kegan Mattheys, warmly welcomed the Western Cape under-16 angling team (pictured) to the Strand shop with an incredible surprise. He generously sponsored each young angler in the team with R1 000. The young anglers were thrilled and couldn’t wait to explore Fishing Republic to use their sponsorships in-store. The budding anglers’ parents extended their heartfelt gratitude to Mattheys for his generous gesture. “By investing in these young talents, you are helping make their dreams a reality,” read a media statement. “Despite the challenges of running a small business, your willingness to give so generously is truly inspiring. Your support is deeply appreciated.” A personal note from the team’s manager, Garth Dahl, stated: “A huge shout-out to Kegan of Fishing Republic tackle shop for his very generous sponsorship of R1 000 to each of the five anglers. Thank you, thank you, thank you!” Visit Fishing Republic, located in Van Ryneveld Street just off Beach Road, and experience its friendly and knowledgeable service, along with great prices.

E-bike raffle for Pedal Project

The Pedal Project staged the second Dream Bike Raffle draw at the Hanger Bike Co this month, and one lucky Somerset West local rode away with a bespoke Outer Cycles Link e-bike.

Grant Parkes was one of 800 individuals who purchased a total of 1 500 tickets, which helped the community-based mental health support programme, which uses mountain biking as a vehicle for empowering children from historically disadvantaged communities, raise more than R160 000 towards their 2025 operations.

Off the success of the 2022 Dream Bike Raffle, Pedal Project partnered with Outer Cycles, South Industries, Lyne, ArmourRide, Paint by Jared, and the Hanger Bike Co to produce a unique and stunning machine again this year. Boasting a custom design, by Hasie and the Robots, the Outer Cycles Link full suspension e-bike is truly eye-catching.

This, along with the needs of the 120 beneficiaries the Pedal Project supports, inspired individuals to purchase raffle tickets at R150 each.

“I was particularly impressed and moved by the support of Tygerberg Mountain Bike Club, whose members purchased over 300 tickets in just two days,” Pedal Project founder Jaco van der Linde praised. “Their contribution played a vital role in the raffle’s success, showcased the vibrant cycling culture in the region, and highlighted the generosity of mountain bikers in general.

“As an NPO we are entirely reliant on donations from individuals, corporations and other charities. The money we raised through the raffle will go a long way towards the running of the programme in 2025. This entails weekly mental health counselling and

the healthy outdoors outlet, of riding mountain bikes, for 120 children from schools in the historically disadvantaged communities of Macassar and Strand.”

The raffle ran from September to November, and the final draw was conducted after a ride on the Helderberg Trails. “We had a ride, lit the fire, made boerewors rolls, had a beer, and talked about bikes,” Van der Linde reflected.

“When Grant Parkes’ name was drawn as the winner, it was wonderful that he was there to receive the dream bike right then and there. It will be great to see Grant on the Somerset West trails, which I ride myself and where we do the majority of our Trail Therapy sessions, on his new dream bike. I hope the bike will be a conversation starter in his riding circles too, and will help spread the word of the Pedal Project.”

Community spirit shines at Dornier

The Gratitude Run, hosted by Distance 4 Difference (D4D) earlier this month, again proved to be an inspiring event that combines a love of running with a commitment to making a meaningful impact.

Held at a stunning new venue, Dornier Wines in Stellenbosch, the run welcomed participants from across the region, showcasing the power of community, generosity, and shared purpose.

Founded in 2005, D4D is an NPO dedicated to raising funds for vulnerable children through sport.

Over the last two decades, the organisation has raised more than R13 million.

The Gratitude Run is one of D4D’s signature fundraising events and the 2024 edition featured three main events: a 5 km fun run/walk; a 10 km trail run; and a unique 3 km, four-hour team relay for teams of up to five members.

A total of 510 participants joined this year – 244 for the 5 km event, 184 for the 10 km trail run, and 82 individuals across 18 relay teams.

While the numbers marked a 37% decrease compared to 2022, the event achieved extraordinary success on other fronts.

“Thanks to meticulous planning, generous sponsorships, and the incredible fundraising efforts of specifically the relay teams, D4D raised a net amount of R178 782, significantly surpassing the totals from previous years – R132 512 in 2022 and R91 680 in 2018. Remarkably, the profit per entry more than doubled to R345, underscoring the event’s efficiency and success,” said Stéphan Pieterse, D4D founder and chairperson.

Robbie Dallas-Orr (84), one of the

participants and the founding member of the Winelands Marathon, remarked: “Not to show off at all, but I have been running for over 50 years and have organised many big events, but this event tops my list as the finest, slickest, friendliest event I have ever entered.”

Another participant, Collette, said: “[This was] my first-ever trail run and race. I’m hooked! It was beautiful, wellmarked, the merchandise was great and the vibe just awesome!”

Pieterse said D4D is looking forward to making the Gratitude Run a cherished annual tradition. “For that to happen, we need help, so if there are any volunteers who would like to join the organising committee, please contact D4D,” he implored.

He said as D4D approaches its 20th anniversary next year, the organisation is exploring ways to celebrate this milestone in a truly special way. All funds raised through the run will be allocated by the D4D board to organisations and initiatives supporting vulnerable children.

“The success of this event would not have been possible without the support of our sponsors, donors and partners,” said Pieterse. “A special ‘thank you’ goes to Dornier Wines for hosting the event, as well as all the individuals and businesses who provided sponsorships, prizes for the lucky draw, and the much-needed support to make this event a success.

“D4D remains a testament to what can be achieved when people come together to share their talents, time and resources. Together, we are building a legacy of hope, compassion, and gratitude.”

Somerset West Cricket Club (SWCC) produced a dominant performance to record a 243-run victory over Vikings CC in a First Division B clash at Radloff Park’s Alan Olsen Oval at the weekend.

The hosts won the toss and chose to bat first in sunny and clear conditions, amassing 301/7 in 50 overs.

Opening batsman Matthew Dickson was in fine form, scoring a rapid 53 off 48 balls, including nine fours. But the SWCC middle order struggled until Aqeel Dramat (80* off 86 balls) and Jason Lee Josephs (80* off 46 balls; 7x4, 4x6) came to the crease with the score on 155/7. The pair put on a strong eighth-wicket partnership to propel SWCC to the driving seat.

At the change of innings Vikings CC were never comfortable as SWCC turned all the screws and took wickets regularly. Josephs (3/19) again featured strongly and starred with the ball as well. He was supported by Jaco Venter (4/29) and Jean de Wet (2/0) as Vikings were all bowled out for 58 runs in the 22nd over.

SWCC will next host Edgemead CC this Saturday (30 November).

In First Division A, Hottentots

Holland Cricket Club (HHCC) romped to a four-wicket bonus-point victory when they travelled to face St Augustine’s CC.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field, opening with a seam/spin combination and reaping the rewards as Saints struggled to adjust to the variation.

HHCC increased the tempo in the overs leading up to the drinks breaks, and soon wickets began to tumble. They kept the momentum going and picked up wickets at regular intervals.

The hosts were eventually all bowled out for 102 runs in the 34th over, with spinners Yaasien Railoun (3/20) and Marwaan Wanza (3/16) causing most of the damage.

HHCC started their innings on the back foot, losing their first wicket in the second over. However, positive intent by Rashaad Salie (28) placed the local lads back on the right path as he frequently found the boundary.

In the 20th over, the visitors were in a commanding position on 83/5 and

they managed to cross the line in the 25th over.

Their next encounter will see them back on the road, as they travel to lock horns with Strandfontein CC.

In First Division D, Strand CC (SCC) were on fire as they recorded a bonuspoint victory over Seacrest CC in a lowscoring affair.

Strand won the toss and elected to bat, but they struggled to get any real partnerships going, regularly losing wickets to a good Seacrest bowling attack. SCC were bowled out for 115 runs after 37 overs, with Logan Savory (30) top scoring.

With a low target to defend, SCC came out fighting from the first ball and succeeded as Seacrest found themselves on 51/6 after 15 overs at lunch.

It took Strand just another four overs to wrap up the game and bowl Seacrest out for 71 in 19 overs.

This Saturday SCC will host Pollsmoor CC at Gustrouw Sports Ground.

Meanwhile, Helderberg CC (HCC) suffered a four-wicket defeat at the hands of Pollsmoor CC in a First

Division D clash. HCC won toss and chose to bat, but never really got going as they stumbled to 87/10 in 28 overs. Dexter Hindley (23) provided the only resistance.

Pollsmoor CC were patient in their run-chase and reached 89/6 in 20.1 overs. Aidan Salie (5/9) was the pick of the HCC bowlers.

This weekend, HCC will look to turn things around when they travel to face Langa CC.

In the Second Division, Macassar CC (MCC) continued their winning form with a triumph over Peninsula CC. MCC won the toss and opted to field, with opening bowler Celenschi van Graan (5/32) claiming his first scalp in his first over and his partner Robin Pretorius (2/17) bowling well on the other end to bowl Peninsula out for 132 runs.

The MCC top order struggled with momentum until skipper Rowayne Sinden (30) brought some stability. MCC got over the line in 32.5 overs, securing another win and continuing their unbeaten run. They next face Heideveld CC at Riverside Park.
