The Crackling Needles Knitting Group of Gordon’s Bay is celebrating a remarkable milestone, having donated more than 1000 high-quality knitted items to various community initiatives over the past three years in a successful joint initiative with the Strand Rotary Club.
What began as an informal social gathering for local knitters in 2022, founded by Barbara Fourie and a few other passionate individuals, has blossomed into a prolific force for good
The group, now comprising 30 women ranging in age from 24 to 96 years old, found a powerful partner in Strand Rotary, who brought in the essential wool and the crucial community outreach component “It’s wonderful stimulation for them, it keeps them busy, and it makes them so happy to see their hard work pay off,” said Fourie
The Crackling Needles group produces an array of items, including toys, clothes and scarves, all crafted with commitment to quality Its charitable efforts are a core part of Rotary’s “Beanies, Bears and Blankets” project, with donations distributed to clinics in Macassar, Helderberg Hospital, ACVV, Badisa, the police’s Victim Support Centre and PATCH Helderberg
Beyond donations, Rotary has also worked with other organisations, teaching knitting and crochet, and sharing wool, which is either donated or purchased through the sale of some of the goods
This year the group embarked on its

most ambitious project yet – a colourful, knitted giraffe
The unique creation features a frame built by local artist Tinei Michael Moyana, for which Rotary paid The Crackling Needles group meticulously patched knitted squares and pieces together over the frame, bringing the artistic vision to life
Deidre Peterson, treasurer of Strand Rotary, shared the enthusiasm for the knitted masterpiece and the ongoing partnership “We want to put the giraffe somewhere where it will bring joy,” she said
President-elect of Strand Rotary Elenore Baiocchi added the organisation is in the process of deciding on a recipient for the giraffe, with an announcement expected towards the end of July following a local school competition to name it

The City clarified its official stance on CIDs, emphasising that such initiatives are inherently community-driven
Eddie Andrews, deputy mayor and Mayoral Committee member for Spatial Planning and Environment, explained the rigorous process involved: “A CID is always initiated by a community, and not by the City It usually starts with ‘champions’ within a community, who feel the necessity to improve and upgrade the environment within a defined area ”
REPRESENTITIVE STEERING COMMITTEE
Andrews outlined the requirements for establishing a City-partnered CID “The process begins with a representative steering committee meeting the City’s CID Branch This is followed by defining boundaries, consulting the community on needs, and compiling a business plan
The City provides CID guidelines to assist Public meetings are mandatory to present draft and final business plans, allowing for community comment
Crucially, majority support from property owners (over 50% for commercial, at least 60% for residential) is required, either through written consent or non-objection.
“The application is then submitted to the City by 31 October for council consideration
Upon council approval, a non-profit company (NPC) is established by the steering committee, which becomes the founding directors This NPC undergoes registrations and concludes a finance agreement with the City
“The process is lengthy, and does
not happen overnight
Generally speaking, this is a twoyear process ” Regarding governance and oversight, Andrews said: “The process is subject to a rigorous legislative framework under the oversight and guidance of the City ”
A CID, once established as an NPC, manages its own finances and appoints service providers, an accountant, and auditor, but is “subject to all the City’s bylaws and policies, national laws and the Companies Act”
The City’s role is oversight and legal compliance, with a councillor attending board meetings as an observer
Addressing concerns about community associations’ official recognition, Andrews affirmed that “all public participation processes and public meetings are open to all members of the public and associations whether the association is listed on a database or not”
He emphasised that the CID establishment process is robust, requiring majority property owner support “It is up to the local community to elect their leadership; this falls outside of the City’s mandate and responsibility,” Andrews concluded.
Asked for comment, Basil Cranko, chairperson of the Gordon’s Bay Business Association, said that they have nit been approached regarding the establishment of a CID and therefore cannot express any opinion about it
“We would like to see members of the community involved with transparency and full accountability in the future,” Cranko said

Matthew du Toit, affectionately known as “Crazy Sharky” by his friends and family, is setting his sights on an extraordinary challenge – a 100 km charity run to raise funds for the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in September
The 18-year-old Zandvliet High School learner is driven to help “little souls in pain”
Crazy Sharky is a name bestowed upon him by friends and he embraces it as it signifies the “animal of a shark” within him – a spirit he now channels for a noble cause
The inspiration for this formidable challenge on Saturday 6 September stems from a personal experience “I had a cousin who sustained burn wounds when she was three years old and was rushed to Red Cross hospital,” Matthew
shared “Seeing all those little souls in pain, I made it my mission that I would one day do something for their benefit ”
Matthew draws inspiration from ultra-distance runners, particularly Paul Eichert, a runner who is famously known as “the Crazy Kiwi”
Closer to home, his uncle, Jan du Toit (51), also known as “Johnie”, has been a constant source of motivation “He’s the actual reason why I’m still running today,” Matthew admitted Jan’s achievements include completing the rigorous Two Oceans and the Comrades ultra-distance races “I always listen closely to what he has to say about running "
Matthew’s route will begin at his home in Macassar He plans to run past Eerste River, Gaylee, Kuils River, Parow, Maitland, and towards the V&A Waterfront, and Green Point, turning back once his watch hits the 50 km
Offsh E
mark, effectively completing a 100 km out-and-back journey
Despite some individuals not fully supporting his ambitious endeavour, Matthew remains undeterred “That doesn't stop me from taking on this massive challenge,” he firmly stated
His strategy for conquering the distance is to break it down mentally “My biggest anticipation is to not think about it that much I’m thinking to break the 100 km into five-kilometre stretches to not think too far ahead ”
Matthew believes this run is a powerful statement: “No human is limited, especially in the Macassar community Let’s inspire each other by doing good and treat each other with respect ”
To support Matthew’s “Family Care Project” initiative, donations of clothing, blankets, toiletries, or food parcels can be dropped off at 13 Oliver Thambo Street, Macassar Financial contributions can be made via the BackaBuddy online platform at https://www backabuddy co za/campaign/matthews-100kmrun-for-charity

The threat of a boring life has led a Somerset West youngster to blaze trails in the South African wine industry and inspire other Helderbergers to take unconventional career paths.
Kaylin Willscott (28) added another prestigious label to her collection as she was named in the WineLand Media and ROTOCON 30 under 30 at the beginning of June.
Born and bred in Somerset West with roots as deep as old vines, she attended Hottentots-Holland High School, where in Grade 11 she was introduced to women working in male-dominated fields, which sparked her interest in winemaking.
“I never wanted my life to be boring. It is a concern for me when people settle for the mundane,” she shares.
Willscott’s ambitions have always had excellent structure and complexity, a state of affairs that led her to pursue a career in winemaking.
After matriculating she was accepted at Stellenbosch University where she studied viticulture and oenology without her parents’ knowledge.
“My parents were unsure because I didn’t choose a common career, but they never discouraged me,” says Willscott with gratitude for her parents who allowed her dreams to breathe and develop character.
Besides Willscott, her family boasts no ties to the wine industry.
“We weren’t the family that went wine tasting. Outside our house, alcohol generally had negative connotations. Wine is seen negatively in communities where it’s abused, but it can be a vehicle of change when properly appreciated for its craft and cultural significance rather
than just its alcohol content.”
After graduating Willscott was selected for the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme, receiving mentorship and hands-on experience at several prominent Stellenbosch wine estates. This allowed her to venture abroad for harvests in France and Austria
“For me, I am just living a dream
A month before I left for Austria my parents asked about my plans and I just went ‘Oh, I am going to Austria’.”
By late 2023 she had joined Journey's End Vineyards in Sir Lowry's Pass as assistant winemaker. The homecoming had notes of serendipity and purpose.
“Considering the rollercoaster my career has been, ending up in Sir Lowry’s Pass was quite unexpected. It was a full-circle moment to work in the community I grew up in.”
In April 2024, she was appointed head winemaker at the Inzuzo Wine Company, a social enterprise of Journey’s End, combining her expertise with community development where her family has deep roots A perfect pairing of passion and purpose, with a nose of success.
“I knew I always wanted to be involved in outreach because winemaking alone isn’t enough,” says Willscott. “I needed something more fulfilling.”
Despite her accomplishments, Willscott feels that she still has a long way to go “I hesitatingly call myself a winemaker, because many say one needs at least 10 years or 10 vintages ”
She hopes to mentor future winemakers, especially women. “Mentorship helped me, and if I can help other young women feel less like outsiders in the industry; it will make me happy.”
Willscott further encourages parents to let their children explore unusual career paths
“Just let them follow their hearts; you never know what might happen.”

In a clash that lived up to all expectations, Raithby Universals emerged victorious over Sir Lowrians this past Saturday (14 June), securing the Northern League championship title in a dramatic 23-20 triumph.
The highly anticipated encounter, featuring two previously unbeaten sides, drew a massive crowd to Raithby Sports Ground, including Stellenbosch mayor Jeremy Fasser and several council members, all eager to witness who would claim bragging rights and the coveted championship Sir Lowrians had an early opportunity to draw first blood with a penalty directly in front of the posts, but their usually reliable kicker, Randy Brinkhuis, uncharacteristically pushed the attempt wide
It was Raithby who capitalised first, with seasoned flyhalf Brandon Manuel, clearly keen to make a statement against his former club, slotting a penalty to open the scoring
Sir Low quickly responded with a converted try, showcasing their attacking prowess A major turning point in the first half saw the visitors lose their captain and eighthman to a red card Despite being a man down, Sir Lowrians impressively rallied, finding their rhythm and adding another converted try and two penalties to their tally Manuel could only manage one more penalty for Raithby before the break, leaving the half-time score at 6-20 in favour of Sir Lowrians, who seemed poised to take the spoils
The second half began with RU showing renewed determination Manuel quickly added another penalty, narrowing the deficit to 9-20 Fifteen minutes into the half, the home team made several strategic changes that paid dividends
Soon after, they crossed for a converted try, bringing the score to a tantalising 16-20, with Sir Lowrians still clinging to the lead
As the match entered its dying stages, Raithby pressed hard, creating numerous

scoring opportunities that often led to mistakes With just five minutes remaining, it appeared Sir Low were destined to be crowned champions However RU seized a final opportunity
After Sir Lowrians kicked the ball downfield, the home team launched a counter-attack, moving the ball from side to side This brilliant passage of play culminated in their inspirational eighthman and captain, Ian Kampies, crashing over the tryline for the match-winning score
Manuel, cool under pressure, converted the try, pushing RU into a 23-20 lead as the final whistle blew
The victory not only secured the Northern League title for RU, it also saw them maintain their unbeaten record
Both teams will now compete in the Top 9 Promotional League, which commences next month They will join seven other clubs in vying for promotion to Super League C
Eugene Mayinje, director of rugby at Sir Lowrians, graciously congratulated Raithby Universals on their victory “Firstly, I want to congratulate RU on winning the Northern League 2025,” he stated
“It was a well-balanced match between the two top teams in the league, with RU managing the match well and capitalising on the opportunities We, as Sir Low, will go back and prepare for our last game against Excelsior in Stellenbosch I’m very proud of our team ”
