Support for learners in Nelson Mandela Bay schools

MEMBER of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, together with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, visited Masiphathisane Senior Secondary School in Motherwell to deliver essential school items.

These included sanitary towels, school shoes, school bags, and sports kits.

During the visit, MEC Nqatha praised the teachers for their dedication, acknowledging their role in not only achieving excellent academic results but also in nurturing the future leaders of the country.

However, the school’s principal highlighted pressing challenges, such as teenage pregnancy, inadequate infrastructure, and a high crime rate in the community.

Additionally, MEC Nqatha, alongside Acting Executive Mayor Councillor Yolisa Pali-Jongilanga, brought much-needed support to Astra Primary School in Bethelsdorp.

They handed over similar essential items aimed at promoting dignity and enhancing the learning experience.

These visits were collaborative efforts involving multiple gov-

ernment departments, including Education, Social Development, and SASSA.

The initiatives not only focused on donating supplies but also addressed service delivery issues and provided support for the psycho-social challenges faced by the school communities.

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, said, “These coordinated efforts emphasise the government’s commitment to holistic development and the improvement of learning environments for students across Nelson Mandela Bay,” in conclusion.

A call for urgent action

and the right to life,” argued Cowley.

THE Oncology Department at Gqeberha’s Provincial Hospital is facing a critical shortage of chemotherapy drugs due to unpaid pharmaceutical suppliers, a situation that has prompted grave concern and calls for immediate reform.

This alarming trend was highlighted during a recent oversight inspection by Jane Cowley MPL, DA Shadow MEC for Health, who observed that life-saving cancer treatments were unavailable because the Eastern Cape Department of Health had “failed to meet its financial obligations,” according to Cowley.

The Shadow MEC noted that patients with conditions such as Hodgkin’s Lymphoma are currently being treated with secondline medications, which are less effective than those globally recognised as first-line treatments.

“This deterioration in care has led to some patients regressing in their health, resulting in removal from transplant lists for procedures such as bone marrow transplants.

“Imagine being told that your child, your parent, or your partner, couldhavebeensaved—ifonly the Department of Health had prioritised their life over its administrative costs,” Cowley mentioned in a statement.

The DA further called for the Eastern Cape Department of Health to be placed under administration in accordance with Section 100 of the Constitution.

“This intervention is a lifeline for a system on the verge of collapse, a call to action to protect the constitutional right to healthcare

The ongoing financial mismanagement by the Department, she claimed, presents not just a bureaucratic failure but effectively a death sentence for affected individuals.

Highlighting the broader impact of this crisis, Cowley warned that the failure to pay suppliers threatens the entire future of the healthcare system, potentially exacerbating medico-legal claims and driving the Department into deeper financial chaos.

Cowley has urgently written to HealthMEC,NtandokaziCapa, demanding prompt payments to suppliers to restore access to critical cancer treatments and a reassessment of departmental spending priorities.

In response, Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson, Mkhululi Ndamase, acknowledgedthechallengeswithsupplier payments, stating that efforts are ongoing to resolve these issues.

Ndamase highlighted recent upgrades in oncology services, including new equipment at Livingstone and Frere hospitals and an advanced oncology unit being builtatNelsonMandelaAcademic Hospital in Mthatha.

Hedismissedcriticismsas“mischievous misinformation,” stressing that the Department remains committed to patient care.

‘The challenges with supplier payments are common knowledge, and all efforts are in motion to resolve the matter. Our patients remain our priority at all times.

“As such, we can confirm that the medicines that were temporarily out of stock are expected to be delivered today (Wednesday, January 22),” Ndamase concluded.

Understanding transmission,prevention

IN light of increasing concerns about a Parvo outbreak, General Practice Assistant at Mount Pleasant Vet Clinic, Andrea Van Greunen said that it’s crucial for dog owners to understand how this highly contagious virus spreads and how to protect their pets.

“Parvo is transmitted through direct or indirect contact with contaminated surfaces or objects. Alarmingly, even garden services can inadvertently aid in spreading the virus.

“By walking on infected surfaces, such as

areas where a contaminated dog has been, individuals can carry the virus on their shoes to new locations, potentially exposing other dogs,” she explained.

This means that even routine activities, like walking to a nearby shop or visiting another garden, can inadvertently introduce the virus to your home.

Furthermore, Van Greunen said an unvaccinated dog sniffing contaminated faeces is particularly at risk of contracting this highly infectious virus.

“The effectiveness of the Parvo vaccine is notable, as it provides 100% protection when administered on schedule. Puppies require a series of three initial inoculations at six, ten, and fourteen weeks of age, followed by annual boosters to maintain immunity,” she added.

The importance of this vaccination schedule cannot be overstated, as any deviation may render pets vulnerable to the disease.

Pets can fall ill if they miss these crucial early vaccinations, underlining the importance of ensuring complete vaccination.

Early detection of Parvo symptoms is key to preventing severe health deterioration in affected animals. Pet owners should remain vigilant for signs such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, bloody stools, and dehydration, according to Van Greunen.

In the unfortunate event that a dog shows symptoms of Parvo, immediate veterinary care is imperative, as there are no home remedies available to treat this virus effectively.

Veterinarians are equipped to provide the necessary supportive treatment that can make a significant difference in the recovery of infected animals.

Protecting pets from Parvo remains a pri-

ority for all dog owners, regardless of whether their animals frequently venture outside. Since humans can inadvertently carry the virus into their homes on shoes and clothing, vaccination serves as the best line of defence against this potentially deadly virus.

Regular and up-to-date vaccinations are crucial to safeguard against exposure.

“Veterinarians are urging dog owners to ensure their pets are fully vaccinated and

to be vigilant about maintaining their pets’ vaccination schedules. Anyone who suspects their pet has been exposed to Parvo should seek veterinary care without delay to provide necessary supportive treatment. The emotional toll of the illness on both pet owners and veterinary staff cannot be understated; it is distressing not only for those watching their beloved pets suffer but also for the veterinary professionals striving to save them,” Van Greunen concluded.

NMBM invites stakeholders for key land use meetings

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

AS part of Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe’s 100-day priorities, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has announced a series of public participation meetings.

These meetings are open to all religious and non-profit organisations, as well as representatives and members of the public, focusing on land use management across the Metro.

Led by Mayor Lobishe and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Human Settlements, Councillor Thembinkosi Mafana, the sessions aim to engage with the community and explain recent council-approved decisions regarding land use, land purchase, zoning, and billing.

These decisions, made in December, particularly affect land used, purchased, or leased by churches, mosques, and non-profit organisations within the Metro’s boundaries.

The discussions will cover important decisions concerning site sizes for lowcost housing, Title Deed registrations and handovers, removal of asbestos roofs, and the registration of backyard dwellers.

Delivered in a six-cluster approach, each cluster will host a meeting to ensure comprehensive coverage across the Metro.

Councillor Mafana emphasised the significance of these meetings. “We have made historic decisions that will improve the lives of our people, both socially and economically.

“It is therefore important to create awareness by informing and engaging all relevant stakeholders on these very important developments, improvements and changes. Led by the Executive Mayor, we will cover the entire Metro. We call upon our communities to attend.”

Director of Public Relations for A Re Tshwaraneng, a student-run NPO in Gqeberha, Khalil Blose, said this is a good move, especially for NPOs.

“These talks are the beginning of something that could really be good for the people of this Metro.

“The work done by non-profits specifically is quite amazing, and through these discussions, the questions they have will be answered Ior their good work to continue effectively; so I’m excited.”

The meetings are scheduled as follows: ) Champion Galela Cluster: Conducted at Soweto on Sea Multipurpose Hall on January 29.

Wards: 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 36 and 40.

Vulumzi Secondary matrics achieve astounding results

MOTHERWELL-based Vulumzi Secondary School managed to achieve a 98.3% matric pass rate following the 2024 November matric examinations.

Vulumzi Secondary principal, Mzimkhulu Fina, revealed that his school’s Grade 12

pass rate target for the 2024 final examinations was between 90% and 91% after they achieved 86.6% in 2023.

Fina said, “We had 74 bachelor’s passes, 36 diploma passes, and 10 certificate passes in total. We are overjoyed because our pass rate is above our target. Our staff and our learners were altruistic throughout the season. There were no distractions, but everybody knew what our mandate was. Our best Grade 12 results are attributed to diligence, dedication, discipline, and determination. However, the teachers’ dignity is judged by their best results. Furthermore, labour, peace and harmony at our school also played a significant role.”

Departmental head, Noluthando Limba, highlighted that the school was just like a home to their staff and learners, as they spent most of their time there conducting extra lessons after school hours. Limba explained, “Sometimes we conducted our lessons until very late. But our principal always says, ‘no pain, no gain,’ to motivate our staff and our learners. Our staff worked their socks off while our learners put in more effort so that we could achieve our target.”

One of the top learners, Lisakhanya Mketo, who achieved five distinctions in IsiXhosa Home Language, Mathematics, Geography, Life Sciences, and Life Orientation, stated that her achievement was the fruit of hard labour.

Mketo said, “I would like to study Database Sciences, but I have to make a choice about the learning institution. My teachers were there to render assistance to us; hence we managed to achieve 98.3%. We gave our utmost best all the time.”

Hlomla Mangcotywa, who obtained four distinctions in Agriculture, Life Sciences, isiXhosa Home Language, and Life Orientation, thanked his teachers, study mates, and his parents for his excellent results. Mangcotywa said, “I am very excited about my achievements. I am very proud

Van Der Kemp teacher’s initiative to support learners

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

WHEN Tuskeen Salie joined Van Der Kemp Primary School in 2017 as a foundation phase teacher, she knew she would quickly become attached to the learners and the community of Saltlake, Gqeberha.

Even though most of the learners come from disadvantaged backgrounds and face really difficult cir-

cumstances, they still show a deep yearning for learning and a passion for education.

“It’s a marvel to me, that these little people, beautiful and bright-eyed, coming from some really traumatic experiences, still have so much zeal for life. That’s enough to start a fire in any teacher — that’s what we are here for,” said Salie, tearfully.

Being brought up by her grandmother, Salie said her own child-

hood was not great either, so she can relate to her learners. “But education is the key to making a better life for yourself and the people you love,” she said.

“So, when I started noticing that sometimesmyclassofover60learners was getting smaller, I was concerned. I went to their homes to find out why they were not in school.”

Atmostofthehomesshevisited, she discovered that the learners were not coming to school because they lacked basic needs such as school shoes, uniforms, books, and stationery. Deeply troubled by this, Salie decided to do something about the sad situation she saw.

“I started knocking on different doors, trying to get everyone to rally behind the initiative of making sure no child is left behind. I was not about to sit and do nothing while children who have the basic right to education missed out on it because of circumstances they cannot control. It also pained me to see children staying in homeswherethereisgender-basedviolence, substance abuse, and poverty — at least when they come to school, halfoftheirdayisspentlearning, playing with their peers, and eating two meals provided.”

Without the School Governing Body chairperson, Ashley Fortuin, Salie said she would not have been able to do what she has. “He has been representing the SGB for nine years now, and his passion for these learners and the community keeps growing. Workingwithalike-mindedpersonhasbeen suchahugehelpbecausewearedriven by the same purpose. Most of the time, hereachesintohisownpockettomake things happen for the learners at the school.”

Fortuin, whoisunemployed, saidhe does it all with pleasure. “Yes, I’m not working currently, but if the feeding schemeisunabletodeliverthefoodfor the learners for whatever reason, I drive my car to collect it. I know that whatever blessings are in store for me willcome, butmydutyistohelpwhere I can, with what I have,” he said, smiling.

The principal at Van Der Kemp Primary School, A.D. Johnson, whose firstdaywasjustadaybeforethehandover, said he has no choice but to hit the ground running with such a moti-

vatedstaffmemberanddedicatedSGB.

“I was motivated when I met Miss Salie, who has the sun shining out of her eyes for these learners. She is a huge asset to this school, and to the community, but especially to these little people in this school,” he said.

“Education is not just about the books; it’s about the overall well-being ofthechild, andthat’swhatwearepromoting at our school. I want to motivate the other staff members to get involved and help out where they can, the more hands on deck, the better. I also want the community to know that when they bring their child to this school, their child will be cared for,” Johnson concluded.

Something Fortuin wished to communicatetotheparentsofthelearners at the schools was to be more involved in the learners’ school life. “We have over 700 learners here, but when we call a parents’ meeting, we only have two parents coming. That’s unacceptable.”

Different donors have been supportingSalieandtheschool’sinitiative, including two local organisations, the Benedicta Foundation and the Kaiden Titus Foundation (not yet registered).

Last week, the two organisations visited the school to hand over essential

school items. “One of the reasons why we are grateful for the media being here is that we are able to account for the goods we have received from the public because we even ask for donationsonsocialmedia, aswellastocommunicate our gratitude for the help this beautiful city is giving our learners.Youhaveheardourcriesand responded so swiftly and generously, thank you.”

The Benedicta Foundation, started by Thaspen Huhner who has since relocated to Abu Dhabi, is a Gqeberhabased organisation run by Huhner’s cousins, Octavia, Linshay, Caryn Arkeldien, andfriend,JalineYoung.“For us, it’s about helping as many people who are in need as possible. That’s it. Whether it’s through giving essential items, skills development training, traumatherapy, orcookinglessons,we go where we’re needed,” Octavia said. Titus, who is studying towards an education qualification, said he hopes the learners stay in school, no matter what the circumstances are, because things will improve through education.

For more information, to donate, or to get in touch with the two organisations, contact Tuskeen Salie at 071 007 4763.

Amateur wrestling club active again

of the year, Stefan

HANNES SCHOEMAN

AFTER ten years of inactivity the Algoa Park Amateur Wrestling Club is well and alive again.

“It’s fantastic to be active again. I’m over the moon with the remarkable progress we showed in such a small space of time,” a jubilant president, Johan Grobler, said.

When it was decided to restart the club, Grobler was elected at the end of 2022 to lead the club into the future.

“In 2023 we started the engine with great success and immediately saw awesome results from athletes who are desperate to succeed and show their class at national level.

“We currently have 80 wrestlers that include juniors, seniors and one master who train with huge enthusiasm in the Pieter Rademeyer hall.

“Almost half of our athletes are girls – most of them are just brilliant. The talent is remarkable,” Grobler said.

At last year’s South African championships in Stellenbosch Algoa Park was represented by 25 girls who stunned the spectators with a classy performance.

“They were so good that they finished second out of all the provinces in really strong competition,” a proud Grobler said.

Algoa Park also produced 14 national champions last year which Grobler described as “phenomenal”.

Up-and-coming star Kay “Lollie” Ter-

ry is just 16 years old, but already a junior and senior South African champion.

“The sky is the limit for this young star,” Grobler said as she narrowly missed out on a chance to represent South Africa at the Africa Championships.

“Her second place when she was just beaten on points will make her determined to reverse the result next time.”

Another star is young Stefan Roberts, who was entered in six divisions at the SA Championships.

“Stefan was outstanding to win five medals in six divisions. This is an absolutely fantastic performance,” Grobler remarked.

Roberts also came out tops in the U/13 and U/15 divisions.

He was also named EP’s male wrestler of the year with KayDee Spinks, the top girl’s athlete in the province. Spinks won a gold and silver medal at the nationals.

With nine qualified coaches, it comes as no surprise that Algoa Park is flexing its muscles again.

They are Lionel Botha, Wouter Nell, Johan Grobler, Andre Claassen, Marius Rosslee and JP Botha, while Jessica Landman leads the female coaches alongside Bernadette Klinkhardt and Kathleen Myburgh.

Grobler also pointed out that finances always play a crucial role in amateur sport and therefore he and his executive highly appreciate the support of BTD (Bay Tool Makers), ABC Glass and Supamix.

Did you know?

, The Algoa Park Club was originally established in 1973 by Hannes van Rensburg when they started training in the Danie du Toit primary school. , Van Rensburg and Leslie van der Westhuizen became Springboks, while other big names include Wouter Nell, Bobby Dyer, Morné Dorfling, Louis Snyman, Willie van Niekerk (Africa champ), Ndiliseko Bangani, Seyabolelo Boy and Jandré Allers. , Some of these were national champions and were also on the winning side against the touring Americans.

Peace Makers FC lose match on soft points

SAFA Eastern Cape Provincial Acting Executive Officer, Secretary Sikelela Mtangayi, said that the Gqeberha outfit, Peace Makers, arrived late for their away ABC Motsepe League Coastal Stream game against EMI FC, which was scheduled to take place at Lady Grey Stadium in Lady Grey on Saturday.

Mtangayi stated that the game was scheduled for 15:00, but the Makers arrived after the scheduled kickoff. According to Sikelela, under SAFA rules, any team arriving late for a game is typically considered to have forfeited the match on a walkover, with no grace period for late arrival allowed.

The Makers have not yet won any games after 10 matches since the start of the season. The Gqeberha side managed to collect two points after drawing twice. As things stand, they face a mammoth task in their bid to fight relegation. Their next game will be against Camdeboo Football Academy Development in Graaff Reinet on Saturday.
