Community demands action on delayed sports field project

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

FRUSTRATION swept through the Schauderville community on January20asresidents,stakeholders,and members of the Moore Dyke Project Steering Committee gathered to protestongoingdelaysintheR54million upgrade of the local sports field.

The much-anticipated project, overseen by the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) on behalf of themunicipality, hasbeenstalledfor six months due to a dispute between MBDA and the contractor.

The delay has led to the eviction of local clubs and community groups, including churches that used the facilityforservices, leavingthemwithout a place to convene.

This has prompted community leaders to take action, seeking not just answers but a resolution to the stalemate that has brought progress to a standstill.

Rudi Swarts, the Chairperson of the Moore Dyke Project Steering Committee, voiced the community’s concerns. “This project should have been completed by now, but instead, everythingisatahalt.Ourcommunity clubs have nowhere to train, and even churches that use the facility have been evicted. The lack of progress is disappointing, and we can’t continue to stand by while our questions remain unanswered.”

Swarts said the protest on Monday symbolised a collective demand for transparency and swift action.

Nicole Klokow, MBDA Marketing, Communications, and Investment Promotion Manager, commented on the situation, saying, “The delay is

due to a contractor dispute. Currently, internal processes are being followed to reach a resolution.”

However, when pressed for more details, she added, “There is nothing that I can immediately add, just to emphasise that the project is receiving the necessary attention and consideration.”

Samantha Cornelius, Secretary of the Project Steering Committee, Facility Management Committee, and Vice Chairperson of Hotspurs Football Club, expressed the broader impact of the delayed project.

Reopened Motherwell clinic faces uncertain future

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

MOTHERWELL residents finally took a stand and protested outside the NU8 Clinic last week after it hadbeenclosedformonths, resultinginthemhavingtotravellonger distances to receive medical help.

This collective action showed the community’s frustration and urgency for accessible healthcare services.

The closure of the clinic, attributed to staff shortages, has severely affected the residents, leading to significant inconvenience and concern over the future of healthcare in the area, according to Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson, Mkhululi Ndamase.

“The functioning of healthcare facilities in Nelson Mandela Bay, including Motherwell NU8 Clinic, has been negatively impacted by staff shortages, a situation exacerbated by resignations due to the two-pot pension system and escalating criminal activities,” Ndamase added.

InOctoberoflastyear, theSAPS reported that criminals targeted the NU8 Clinic in Motherwell, where staff were robbed of their cellphones.

“Such incidents have not only disrupted services but have also placed tremendous strain on existing staff, making it difficult for themtoservethecommunityeffectively,” Ndamase said.

In response to these troubling conditions, the National Union of PublicServiceandAlliedWorkers (NUPSAW) in the Eastern Cape, alongside affected community members, demanded that the department provide answers and ensure the clinic’s reopening during the recent protests.

Inanefforttocombatthesechallenges, Ndamase said the department actively collaborated with

communities and local leaders, including ward councillors, to raise awarenessaboutthepervasiveimpact of crime on healthcare services.

The call was for communities to standtogetherinprotectinghealth facilities and healthcare workers.

Ndamase then urged that “when staff are too traumatised to work, itisultimatelythecommunitythat bears the brunt of the hardship.”

While the clinic is operational again, Ward 59 Councillor, Bulelani Matenjwa said the residents’ confidence in its continuity remains shaky.

Thedepartmenthaspromisedto fill vacancies within the current budgetary framework and assures the public that efforts are being made to address staff shortages swiftly.

“The matter of staff shortage in Gqeberha and other parts of the province is receiving our urgent attention.

“There are processes underway to consider options of ensuring that there are nurses to continue providing patient care to the communities of Gqeberha.”

Asthedepartmentgrappleswith budget constraints, Ndamase appealed for patience and understanding of unions and community members.

“It is crucial to note that during any temporary closures of clinics, clients are directed to nearby facilities to ensure service continuity.

The department has explained to staff and union leaders that because of budgetary constraints, it is currently not possible to fill all the vacancies. It is then surprising that there is a union that acts as if it is not aware of the budgetary constraints. To then personalise the budgetary constraints as if the HoD is responsible for it would be very unfortunate and uncalled for,” he concluded.

and find alternative venues, which are limited and often inadequate. We had to settle for facilities lacking proper lighting and equipment, leading to both soccer clubs being relegatedduetopoorperformance.Ourplayers are despondent, and some have left the club.”

Cornelius further highlighted the economicandsafetyconcernscaused by the displacement, noting, “Travelling to alternative venues has been costly for players and parents. Safety is a major concern as juniors walk to Adcock, crossing busy roads and returning in the dark. The lack of a sta-

ble facility increases the risk of idleness, potentiallyleadingtoissueslike substance abuse and gang activity.”

Adding to the community’s concerns, she shared, “We have approximately 400 members across the clubs and are in the process of expanding our girls’ teams. Without a proper facility, this growth is not possible. The facility also generates revenue through stalls at games, a source of income we no longer have.”

Corneliusdetailedpastpromisesof facility upgrades, stating, “The contractor took the site in April 2022, with work supposedly finishing by

May 2024. Though initially ahead of schedule, delays due to disagreements, payment issues, and poor weather pushed the completion date further away.”

Thecommunityisurgingaprompt response and action from the MBDA and municipality, demanding accountability for the inconvenience and support for a stable training ground.

Swarts added, “This is a plea that we are crying out for help, especially for the minister to come and intervene. We’re tired of the lip service; we’re tired of seeing different politiciansandofficialscomingtotakepicturesherewhenthingsaregoingfine but are silent when actual work needs to happen.

“As a community, we are proud of this area, and we know something good can be produced here, and we can protect it, but we are not given the support. That project is now being vandalised, and even more money will be needed to replace certain things like the grass and other stolen goods. We’ve reported this multiple times but it’s fallen on deaf ears.”

The MBDA’s Klokow concluded, “We can add that the project consists of various components that will result in the overall upgrading of the Moore Dyke Sports fields. For the period (majority of July – December 2024 to date) there were no works on site.

“The project is currently on hold due to a contractual dispute by the contractor. We are taking the issue to arbitration. An independent Quantity Surveyor will be brought in to remeasure the work, as this is the main point of the dispute.”

Sardinia Bay community ensures new security measures

In August 2024, the Chelsea Residents Association and other stakeholders, initiated the installation of security cameras to combat criminal activities at Sardinia Bay’s parking lot. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

A COLLABORATIVE effort to address escalating security concerns saw the Chelsea Residents Association implementing a comprehensive action plan for Sardinia Bay’s parking lot.

This decision, reflecting the community’s commitment to protecting a cherished local gem, followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including Ward 1 Councillor, Dries van der Westhuyzen, Walmer SAPS, the Walmer CPF and SCF, and various municipal entities.

Denton van Vuuren, CPF Sector 2 Chairperson, said the installation of security cameras has transformed Sardinia Bay from a hot-spot of weekly criminal incidents to an area with zero reported cases – until a recent theft.

The high cost associated with such a security project was met through the generous contributions of equipment, skills, time,

and labour from dedicated Chelsea residents and others close to the initiative. These efforts culminated in the deployment of specialised resources aimed at safeguarding Sardinia Bay.

“We’ve installed security cameras at the Sardinia Bay beach parking lot and shared amazing progress,” said Van Vuuren. “Until Friday, January 10, there was not a single reported malicious incident since the camera installation in August 2024. From weekly reports of criminal activities, we went to zero. Nada. None.”

However, Van Vuuren revealed that a theft was reported at the Sardinia Bay beach parking area. On Sunday, January 12, footage from the newly installed CRA CCTV pole was used to assist law enforcement. Upon obtaining a SAPS case number, the footage was shared with the investigating officer.

“Remarkably, the stolen property was recovered on the morning of Tuesday, January 14, directly due to the information provided by these cameras. The cameras serve

a multi-purpose role: primarily as a crime deterrent, secondly as an active Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) monitor, and thirdly, as a valuable source of information and evidence.

Captain André Beetge of SAPS concluded that “After consultation with SAPS Walmer, we can confirm sporadic incidences of housebreaking in the Sardinia Bay residential area, as well as several incidences of theft out of motor vehicle in the remote Sardinia Bay Beach parking lot (at the big dunes). SAPS Walmer and the Walmer CPF are in regular contact with the association as well as security companies, and as a crime prevention drive for a safer environment it has been a regular focus of the SAPS to promote the erection of security cameras as a crime prevention method.

We can also confirm that since the security camera has been installed at the beach parking lot a reduction of incidences of theft out of motor vehicle have been experienced.”

NMBM takes steps to support Ekuphumleni Old Age Home

IN a move to provide much-needed financial relief to community services, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Budget and Treasury, Councillor Khanya Ngqisha, conducted an oversight visit to the Ekuphumleni Old Age Home in Zwide recently.

The visit’s primary aim was to register elderly residents for the Assistance to the Poor (ATTP) subsidy programme, a crucial step in addressing the home’s municipal debt, which presently stands at approximately R3 million.

The ATTP initiative is crafted to alleviate financial burdens on non-profit and non-governmental organisations caring for vulnerable communities and is not limited to organi-

sational aid alone. It also extends assistance to individuals in indigent areas by managing arrears on their municipal accounts and offering sustainable solutions to settle debts.

“This programme ensures that organisations serving the community are given much-needed financial support. It also provides a sustainable approach to managing arrears for those in need,” said Councillor Ngqisha during the visit.

The intervention was warmly received by the Ekuphumleni Old Age Home, as expressed by its Director, Mongameli Peter.

“We are deeply thankful to Councillor Ngqisha for tackling this ongoing issue. This debt relief will bring much-needed support to the elderly in our care,” he commented.

A decade of difference for scholar safety

HANNES SCHOEMAN

LIVEWIRE Gqeberha wrestling promotor, Mark Beale, is celebrating ten years in his fight to protect scholars in the Nelson Mandela Bay region from bullying, gangsterism, and drug and substance abuse.

Beale has just signed an agreement with the Department of Education to work together in this regard.

“We have 112 schools that we visitintheregion–includingJeffreys Bay and Humansdorp,” he said.

“With the blessing of the education department we can now operate more dynamically, and I believe2025isgoingtobeareally big year for us,” he said.

Beale’s World Association of Wrestling (WAW) is the biggest on the African continent. “Over the years we have spoken to thousands of scholars and encouraged them to stand firm against the blows of life.

“I also use Mr Wrestler, our ownworldheavyweightchampion, to speak to the scholars. As a lookalike of the WWE superstar, Hulk Hogan, he is obviously extremely popular at our schools and everyone enjoys his ap-

proach to the task.

“Various speakers go to schoolstotalktoscholars, butwe found it is nowadays easier to grip their attention of scholars bymeansofsuperheroes–superheroes like Mr Wrestler. This is the market that we are in, and it makes our project more effective.

“So he is the perfect man for the job and they just love listening to him.

“We will also try to reach even more scholars from now on.

“I am confident that we are winning this war and will keep goingforasmuchasweareneeded,” Beale said.

Principals across the region are also impressed by the work Bealeandhisteamaredoingand are full of praise for the WAW.

In a speech last year in front of a packed school hall, Beale said, “Walk a straight line in life and never settle for anything less.

“Believe in yourself all the time. This is your weapon in difficult times. Stay away from what is wrong and just focus on what is right.

“The road that you walk in life is your choice. Be strong and don’t let unwanted elements influenceyoutodecideotherwise.”

Petros’s triumph through discrimination

IT was as if the rain was not pouring heavily on Wednesday, January 15, at James Jolobe Secondary School in Motherwell, when former learner, Petros Matinha, returned with his trophy and framed certificate in hand.

Hehadachievedahugemilestoneby beingnamedthesecondtopmatric2024 learner in the Metro and the first to achieve seven distinctions from his school.

“He has not only made us proud, but he has also put our school on the map – no one has ever done what he has managedherebefore, andit’ssuchareassurance to us all. His achievements haverestoredthefaithinnotonlyother learners but the teachers and greater staff of the school as well,” a proud Abednigo Mankanku, principal of the school, said.

In the busyness of the first day of school, with parents coming in and out to register their children, the staff and learnersatJamesJolobestoppedeverything when one of their own, Matinha, entered through the gates in his sparklingwhiteblazer, withtrophyandcertificate in hand.

Welcominghimwith amagwijo (celebratoryisiXhosasongs),hugs, andhigh fives, the emotion in his eyes was hard to miss, as he beamed with a sense of pride. “Ngu Petros lo, abamaziyo, abazange bambona!” (this is Petros whom they might think they know but have neverseen)theentireschoolchantedas he took it all in, almost in disbelief.

Mankanku, who has been the principalattheschoolfortwoyears, saidever since Matinha joined the school in Grade9,hehasalwaysbeenadedicated learner, eager to make something of himself.

“Comingfromadisadvantagedbackground, itwasalwaysclearthatMatinha came here to change his circumstances. He knew that education, and specifically excelling in his studies, waswhatwouldgethimoutofpoverty. He would always say he wanted to prove that hard work beats talent. You can have all the talent in the world, but consistent hard work is what will secure results, and I’d say he has proven that beyond doubt.”

Explaining the motivation behind his determination, Matinha said, “Life does not always give you favourable cards; I learned that from a very young age. But I quickly learned that in order to be in control of your destiny, you need to put in the work required from you. Then what isn’t in your control, you accept. But it’s important to safeguard what you can control.

“Throughout my schooling, I didn’t really have a social life, and that was

intentional. I was aware that friends wouldwanttogooutpartyingandhaving a good time, but I couldn’t afford to do that; it would cost me my goal, so I chose a different path for myself,” the young man said. Being a Zimbabwean citizen did not makelifeinSouthAfricaanyeasierfor him, as he said he was discriminated against from the beginning and sometimes felt like he was fighting a losing battle.

“If it was not for the teachers at James Jolobe, I don’t know where I’d be;theyallbecamemyfamily, andIfelt solovedandacceptedthere.Itwasactually so ironic because when I first moved to Gqeberha and was looking for a school, people discouraged me from trying to get into James Jolobe; they looked down on it and called it a schoolforrejects.Butlookatitnow, the ‘school of rejects’ has produced the second-best learner in the Metro,” he coyly said.

His older brother, Shelton Kativu, couldn’t hide his pride. “He has made our family so proud. Before our mother, Enika Kativu, passed away in 2016, shetoldmetolookaftermylittlebrother and make sure he got an education.

So, even though I didn’t have formal employment, I tried to make sure he stayed in school. He, of course, made it soeasyformebecausehehasabuilt-in spirit of determination and zeal. Coupled with the support from his teachers, this is just emotional for me. He makes us so proud,” he explained.

For all the extra lessons and financial and emotional support, Matinha could not thank his teachers enough.

“You know, after writing my exams, IhadtogobackhometoZim;theygathered the money for my travels. Then, when I was named a top achiever, they again gathered money to bring me

back.Howcanitbeeasyformetomove onfromthem?IwishIcouldstayatthis school,” he joked.

Fortunately, Matinha was able to secureabursarytostudyattheUniversityofPretoria, whereheplanstopursue an Actuarial Science degree. However, he is afraid that if he is not granted a study permit, he might have to go back home and forfeit his dream.

Before jetting off to the next adventure, Matinha wished to thank the teachers who were at the forefront of helping him at James Jolobe Secondary School: Nosicelo Ntliziywane, Zimkhitha Wopa, Vuyokazi Gxothiwe, Zukiswa Ngcana, Vuyokazi Mfecane, the school principal, as well as all the teachers at the Kutlwanong Maths and Science Programme.

Concluding with much hope for the 2025 academic year, Mankanku said he hopes Matinha’s journey will inspire the learners to pull up their socks and work even harder.

“There already were a few learners who were in a healthy competition with him in his class. I even heard some Grade 9 learners saying they want to raise the bar he has set, and that’s exactly what we want to see.”

The James Jolobe Secondary School matric class of 2024 achieved an 83.3% pass rate. At the celebrations held in Buffalo City, the Premier of the ProvinceoftheEasternCape,OscarMabuyane said, “We applaud the resilience, dedication, andhardworkofallmatriculants in the Eastern Cape. To those who may not have achieved their desiredresults, rememberthatyourjourneyisfarfromover.Newopportunities await, and your potential is limitless. Congratulations once again to the Class of 2024! The future is yours to shape.”

Local team through to Schools SA20 national finals

THE captain Cayden Wilson led from the front to clinch a spot in the Schools SA20 national finals for the first cricket team of Pearson High.

The Gqeberha boys will represent the province at the finals weekend from March 12 to 15 in Pretoria.

Pearson produced some outstanding cricket at the Eastern Cape playoffs held in East London this past weekend.

Wilson’s side beat Grey High in Sunday’s final at Buffalo Park by 29 runs.

Pearson batted first after Wilson won the toss and made 156/8. Wilson

IN THE SADDLE:

played a match-winning innings of 69 runs.

He survived a chance when he had only five runs behind his name but went on to destroy the bowling with some innovative shots.

Wilson scored his runs from only 46 deliveries. His innings included five fours and four sixes.

TherewasgoodsupportfromLuke Hector (25), Sulayman Gangat (19) and Matthew Burton (17).

Markus Potgieter (3/20) was the most successful bowler for Grey.

Disciplined bowling by Pearson made it very difficult for the Grey batters to reach the winning target.

Grey were bowled out for 127 runs with Frederick Jansen top scoring with 28.

Kade Myburgh bowled brilliantly for Pearson to take 3/19. Wilson, Gangat and Jadyan Ward all picked up two wickets.

Pearson started with a no result in East London when they couldn’t play against Mqanduli due to a wet outfield.

They kicked into gear after that setbackbybeatingJumbaHighby10 wickets, Queen’s by the same margin and Selborne College by 4 wickets.

On the way to the final, Grey beat

Fairview stables prepare for Cape Town meet

HENK STEENKAMP

THE top three Fairview stables will be represented at one of the country’s biggest horse racing meetings of the year.

Trainers Alan Greeff, Gavin Smith and Kelly Mitchley will saddle horses at the Met meeting at the Kenilworth track in Cape Town on Saturday.

Five East Cape horses, including the reigning Horse of the Season, Joy and Peace, will be in action.

Joy and Peace (Greeff) will contest the Summer Fling Stakes for fillies and mares. National champion jockey, Richard Fourie, will be in the saddle.

The top sprinter, Cruise Control (Smith), runs in the R1.5 million Cape Flying Championship over 1 000m.

The filly, Woman’s World (Mitchley), tackles 2 800m in the Western Cape Stayers race.

In the first of 12 races at this prestigious meeting two Fairview babies, Instaworthy (Smith) and Silva City (Greeff), will face the starter.

New Brighton Academy Extra Mile Tournament starts with a bang

The New Brighton Academy Extra Mile Tournament attracted many fans to New Brighton Oval Stadium, Chevrolet Stadium, and Dodgers Grounds from Saturday to Sunday.

The New Brighton Academy chairman, Zolani Matiwana, and Extra Mile Funerals director, Mncedi Javu, jointly opened the tournament officially in front of the Extra Mile Funerals offices on January 15.

Matiwana highlighted that the fundamental objective of the tournament was to fight crime through sport.

On the other hand, Javu told the clubs that his intentions were to give back to the community and uplift its standards.

On Saturday, fans were treated to nonstop action with u/15 boys, u/18 boys, and senior ladies’ soccer games at New Brighton Oval Stadium. The tournament started with a round-robin. City Lads defeated New Brighton Academy (NBA) 3-0 during their u/15 game, while Mwalimu All Stars (MAS) secured an easy 4-0 victory over Sport Events Management (SEM) in their u/13 game. Boast Pirates

They are both two-year-old fillies running in the Summer Juvenile Stakes over 1100.

It will be a huge challenge for all the Fairview horses to travel to Cape Town and take on the best in the country.

For Nelson Mandela Bay Racing it is exciting that these horses will be part of the big day. The local racing fraternity will be supporting them all the way.

The Met itself will be run for an incredible 163rd time and the runners will be aiming at total prize money of R5 million.

This day is a huge one for punters who will be eyeing bets like the Pick Six, where the pool could reach R10 million, and the Quartet in the main race with a pool of about R2 million.

As is the case every year, this massive racing weekend starts with the Friday Fairview meeting.

It is a good-looking meeting of eight races with the highlights being the Fairview Merchants, the Mile and the Breeders Guineas Plate.

The Greeff stable should be the one to follow. The East Cape cham-

pion yard is in tremendous form and dominated last Friday’s meeting.

Greeff won five of the eight races and now has 72 winners behind his name since the season started in August last year.

Smith picked up a winner, his 60th for the season, and trainers, Zietsman Oosthuizen and Jacques Strydom, saddled a winner apiece.

Oosthuizen won the first race with Greenlight Express when the work riders got a chance to show off their skills.

As usual, this race was a crowd favourite and the winning rider, Coach Naki, was the hero.

Flash Lightning was a bit of a surprise winner of the sixth race but very nearly didn’t line up for the race after his designated jockey, Denis Schwarz, had a terrible fall earlier in the day.

Schwarz surprised all and sundry by getting up almost straight away after the fall.

“It was a shocking fall but I knew I had to get up quickly so that the horse wouldn’t go over me. I was glad to be fine to ride the winner later,” he said.

Queen’s College by 8 wickets, Selborne by 4 wickets, Mqanduli Village by 8 wickets and Queen’s again by 116 runs.

Even before the East London weekend, the Nelson Mandela Bay cricketersproducedsomewonderful performances early in the year.

Grey shone at the Grey Festival in Bloemfontein by winning all three matches.

They beat Jeppe by 8 wickets, Namibia by 3 wickets and Volkskool Potch by 5 wickets.

Pearson was at the Makhanda FestivalwhereWilsonscoredafantastic century in the drawn match against

St Alban’s College.

Wilson hit 128 runs off only 59 deliveries, with 13 fours and 8 sixes. He waswellsupportedbyHectorwith80 runs off 71 balls. Logan Fleetwood was the star batter for Framesby in a drawn two-day match against Woodridge College with a superb innings for 120 runs. Despatch did really well in Bloemfontein to reach the play-off for the fifth spot at the Kovsie Smash Tournament in which 20 sides competed. They lost to Transvalia by 44 runs. This past Saturday Despatch was involved in a thriller when they lost by 6 runs to Brandwag.

Highbury FC restore dignity after home victory

EASTERN Cape side Highbury FC restored their dignity after they overcame the University of Pretoria 1-0 during their Motsepe Foundation Championship game at Gelvandale Stadium on Friday afternoon. Following their away 1-0 loss to Kruger United at Mbombela Stadium last Sunday, Highbury FC vowed not to disappoint their home supporters, who came in droves. The home side exerted a huge amount of pressure on AmaTuks, giving them no space to breathe.

The cheering home crowd gave their team in yellow and royal colours a huge impetus as they launched attack after attack. The visitors were kept in their own ter-

ritory for almost the entire first half.Astheclockwaswindingdown to the end of the first half, Mzoxolo Rafani scored the first goal, sending the home supporters into raptures in the 41st minute. AmaTuks goalkeeper, Ayanda Dlamini, was wellbeaten by the speedy and skilful midfielder-cum-winger Rafani. Highbury FC looked like a house on fire as they picked up where they left off in the first half. Matome Mabeba scored the second goal, increasing the scoreline to 2-0 in the 57th minute. As Highbury pursued more goals, their skipper, Lulama Maqoko, and his defenders, marshalled their defence outstandingly to keep a clean sheet. Highbury’s home victory moved them up the log table from the 11th position to the ninth position.

The log leaders, Durban City FC, tasted their third loss of the season after they suffered a 1-0 away defeat to Casric Stars FC at Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Kwa Mhlanga on Friday. Stars’ victory guided them to the sixth position on the Motsepe Foundation Championship table.
