Tasty treats for Walmer Primary learners

On Monday, March 10, in celebration of National Pack Your Lunch Day, volunteers from Boardwalk joined staff and the principal of Walmer Primary School to pack lunches for 1403 children. Each child received a pack consisting of a sandwich, fruit, juice, and a packet of potato chips. Boardwalk General Manager, Tati Tsunke, said, ‘Rising costs create challenges for many families in our neighbourhood, and food insecurity is a real threat for them. Walmer Primary School is part of our community, so we worked with the school to provide the children with a nutritious meal. We also wanted to surprise the scholars, and it was delightful to see the smiles on their faces when they realised the tasty lunchtime treats were for them.’ From left at the back are Rave Moodley (Gaming

Proposed plan to address crime at Arlington Waste disposal site

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

THE Democratic Alliance (DA) recently proposed a plan to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, on tackling the escalating crime crisis at the Arlington Waste Disposal Site in Gqeberha, following the tragic murder of a father and son.

According to the DA, the site, which has a history of armed robberies, has become increasingly dangerous.

On March 3, DA representatives, including DA NMB Caucus Leader, Councillor Rano Kayser, conducted an oversight inspection at the site. They discovered serious security deficiencies, such as broken perimeter fencing and a lack of proper access control.

In a statement, Councillor Kayser declared, “The current security measures at the waste disposal site are grossly inadequate, exposing residents to unacceptable risks of attacks, accidents, and, most tragically, loss of life. It is the municipality’s

fundamental responsibility to ensure residents can access the site safely, without fearing for their lives.”

As a result, Kayser shared that the DA has submitted a comprehensive proposal to Nelson Mandela Bay Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe.

The plan includes measures such as regular Metro Police visits, a visitors’ register, improved on-site security communication, CCTV installation, and priority repairs to perimeter fencing.

Reacting to the proposal, municipal spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, emphasised a plan already in place to enhance security at the site.

“The Metro is committed to improving security at the Arlington Waste Disposal Site, ensuring both public safety and efficient waste management,” Soyaya said. Despite this commitment, understaffing remains a challenge. While a recent risk assessment conducted by the Safety and Security Directorate suggested 13 armed personnel during the day, only seven unarmed securi-

ty personnel are currently stationed.

Security upgrades, which began on October 1 last year, include solid concrete fencing, gates, a security watchtower, and additional facilities for recyclers, although some elements are still in development.

The municipality stressed the importance of collaborative efforts between government, law enforcement, and the community to ensure safety.

Soyaya revealed that Gqeberha police have advised residents to remain vigilant while visiting the site. This precaution is especially important in light of the recent fatal shooting of Heinrich and Tiaan Minnie.

To enhance security, Soyaya highlighted the role of shared responsibility across all sectors.

Algoa Bay concerned over Ship-to-Ship Bunkering

SHIP-TO-SHIP (StS) bunkering, the transfer of fuel oil between vessels at sea, has sparked significant controversy in Algoa Bay.

Since its introduction in July 2016, StS bunkering has faced scrutiny due to environmental concerns and its contribution to regional crime.

Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is responsible for regulating activities within the Port of Port Elizabeth and the Port of Ngqura. However, the lack of security measures

and broken perimeter fencing have been persistent issues. By 2020, Algoa Bay saw an increase in StS bunkering operations, with transfers rising from 206 in 2016 to 1,520 in 2020, according to Algoa Bay Conservation’s Ronelle Friend.

In a statement, Friend said, “Algoa Bay, known for its rich marine biodiversity, has suffered significantly due to these operations. The African penguin population on St Croix Island has seen an 88% decline

since 2016. Oil spills resulting from bunkering have further endangered marine life, killing endangered African penguins and contaminating the Addo Marine Protected Area.”

In response to these concerns, Friend said the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) set a moratorium on new bunkering licences in 2019, pending a comprehensive environmental risk assessment by TNPA. “Despite this, existing licence hold-

ers continued operations, leading to further environmental incidents,”

Friend alleged.

The African penguin population has shown signs of recovery after a year of halted operations, doubling from 700 pairs in 2023 to 1,300 in 2024.

“This rebound highlights the serious impact bunkering has had on the local ecosystem. Stakeholders like BirdLife South Africa and SANCCOB have legally challenged the DFFE for failing to protect endangered species.

Site is not solely the municipality’s responsibility. Businesses, law enforcement, and communities must work together to protect public infrastructure and improve service delivery.”

Residents and businesses were encouraged to be vigilant of security risks and report suspicious activities. “Meanwhile, the private sector can support by investing in waste management innovations and security solutions. The collaboration between the community, businesses, and the municipality aims to create a safer and more efficient waste management system for Nelson Mandela Bay. This shared effort is essential in addressing the security challenges facing the Arlington Waste Disposal Site and ensuring that such tragedies do not recur,” Soyaya concluded.

In a previous report by the PE Express, the mayor condemned the Arlington Tip double murder and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to strengthening partnerships and improving safety.

The High Court case is ongoing, with the State and commercial fishing interests defending current practices,” she revealed.

Friend concluded by mentioning that the organisation has started a petition to ask the DFFE Minister to stop bunkering in Algoa Bay, until such time that the Offshore bunkering regulations have been promulgated.

For more info on the petition, contact Ronelle Friend at 083 636 1156.

BOOYSENS PARK HIGH:

Bridging the gap with practical studies

BOOYSEN Park High School is taking major steps to provide students with practical skills through its diverse curriculum.

Offering subjects like office administration, hairdressing, art, agriculture, and beauty, the school aims to equip learners with real-world experience.

“These practical studies enable our learners to be qualified in a skill with experience upon completion,” said Amber Blommetjie, an educator at Booysen Park High School.

However, the school faces challenges due to a lack of essential tools and equipment.

For office administration, they require more computers, laptops, and projectors. The hairdressing course lacks hairdryers, flat irons, and clippers, while the agriculture programme needs gardening tools and protective gear. The beauty courses are short of essential oils, nail kits, makeup kits, and towels.

Blommetjie noted, “The lack of proper equipment significantly impacts the quality of education, as our curriculum consists of 70% practical and only 30% theory. This gap makes it challenging to maintain the intended high standard of the programme.”

Despite these challenges, the benefits of practical studies are unmissable. Students gain valuable skills and experience that open doors to future opportunities.

“There are several success stories. Some former students are employed as administrators, while others have started their own businesses in the beauty sector,” Blommetjie proudly shared, smiling from

ear to ear.

This year marks the school’s first attempt to seek assistance from the community and local micro-businesses. Blommetjie explained, “We welcome any new or seldomly-used equipment from small businesses and individuals within our community. It’s about creating a support network to enhance our programmes.”

The school envisions an improved programme where learners are not only experienced, but also certified in their skills upon graduation.

“Our long-term vision includes connecting students with entrepreneurial influences and workshops for those wishing to pursue their own businesses postschool,” said Blommetjie.

The school ensures relevance in its courses through the guidance of a youth development facilitator. This educator keeps the curriculum aligned with industry needs and opportunities in Nelson Mandela Bay.

“We constantly update our courses to stay relevant with industry demands,” Blommetjie affirmed.

Community support is vital for the success of Booysen Park High School’s practical studies programme. By requesting donations of equipment or resources, Blommetjie stressed that local businesses and residents can play a crucial role in shaping the future of these young learners.

“We at Booysen Park High School, are committed to empowering our students, preparing them for successful careers, and fostering a thriving local community through practical education,” the passionate educator concluded.

For more info, contact the school at 041 483 5001.

From beats to dreams: Skwankwankwa’s impact

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

ON March 15, the streets of New Brighton will be transformed as Skwankwankwa hosts an event that goes beyond just music.

This gathering is part of a broader movement aimed at empowering youth, fostering creativity, and providing an alternative to crime, through self-expression and music.

Skwankwankwa, an electrifying collective of DJs from all over Gqeberha, has quickly become influential in the local music scene since its launch last year.

Renowned for their dynamic energy and unique sound, they have demonstrated that music can serve as a powerful tool for transformation, not merely as entertainment.

Their publicist, Aphiwe Faku, said in a city where young people often face limited opportunities and high crime rates, Skwankwankwa is passionate about offering a platform for them to channel their creativity into music, art, and culture.

“By establishing an environment for self-expression and community engagement, this movement is turning Gqeberha’s nightlife into something positive and uplifting,” Faku added.

One of the collective’s founding members, Sinekhaya Mcopela, said, “Skwankwankwa is not just about

throwing parties; it’s about building a community. We use music to inspire the youth, showing them they have a place where they belong, where they can create, express, and dream beyond their circumstances.”

At the core of this event is a lineup of local DJs and creatives who are leading efforts to create a safer, more inspiring environment. T hese artists are more than just entertainers; they are role models, proving that passion and talent can lead to success.

“With every beat and performance, they send a message that creativity is a powerful alternative to crime, and music has the ability to heal, unite, and uplift,” Faku said.

The Skwankwankwa event on Saturday promises an unforgettable experience, filled with electrifying performances, community engagement, and a celebration of local talent.

“Whether you’re a music lover, a creative, or someone who believes in the power of change, this event is not to be missed,” Faku concluded.

THIS is a tough assignment but also a highlight in the career of the first boys team cricketers of Pearson High in Gqeberha.

Pearson will be in action in the national finals of the inaugural Schools SA20 Tournament being played from today till Saturday on the Tuks fields in Pretoria.

“It is such a privilege to be at a tournament like this and being able to go out there and showcase our talent,” the Pearson captain, Cayden Wilson, said. “We are a young side and will definitely look to learn as much as possible but also enjoy the moment.”

Wilson acknowledges that the matches will be tough encounters.

“All the top schools from around the country are here, but we will give it our all,” the all-rounder promised.

Pearson recently lost to Bishops and faces this classy outfit in their first match at the tournament.

“I don’t like leaking runs in the field and my field placings are quite attacking when the match situation allows for it.”

SA20, in collaboration with Cricket South Africa (CSA), launched this national competition in September last year to discover and nurture talent in the U19 age group.”

Over 370 boys’ teams and 200 girls’ school teams participated, with over 1000 matches played across the country.”
