DA lays criminal charges against slumlord

IN an effort to intensify its campaign against slumlords in Nelson Mandela Bay, the Democratic Alliance (DA) recently announced that it has filed criminal charges against the developer, Ken Denton. Denton, who, according to the DA, owns several buildings in Gqeberha’s inner city, is at the centre of allegations concerning neglected properties linked to criminal activities.

During an oversight inspection on February 5, Retief Odendaal MPL, DA PE Southwest Constituency Leader, DA NMB Caucus Leader Councillor Rano Kayser and Ward 5 Councillor Terri Stander examined the historic Old Post Office Complex, a site owned by Denton. Despite its status as a National Monument, the building is reportedly deteriorating.

Odendaal highlighted the issue, saying, “Derelict buildings have become hubs for criminals. Often, these properties are tied to Mr Denton.” The DA filed charges against Denton under the National Heritage Resources Act for failing to protect heritage sites and plans further action under the Criminal Procedure Act, citing negligence.

However, in a response statement, Denton countered these accusations, describing them as a “calculated smear campaign.” He asserts that the properties referenced do not belong to him and criticised the DA for using outdated data.

Denton emphasised his commitment to revitalising Central, detailing substantial contributions, including R34 679 000 in municipal charges last year alone. Highlighting restorations such as Constitution Hill House and Belmont Terrace, Denton maintained his track record of urban renewal.

Denton also addressed the personal nature of the attacks, citing past offensive remarks made against his family by former DA members. “These attacks have crossed a line, focusing on personal vendettas instead of constructive dialogue,” he said.

Despite the tensions, Denton said that he remains committed to collaborating with local authorities, aiming to continue his investment efforts in Central. He warned that continued false allegations may force him to pursue legal action to protect his reputation.

Odendaal concluded, “I won’t be bullied. I won’t back off. I am not beholden to any-

one except the public that employs me. Next week I will be meeting with other stakeholders who will assist us in getting movement

on problem buildings in the Denton portfolio and others. I will ensure that you are kept abreast of developments.”

NMBM urges caution in waste handling following tragic incident

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) has urged residents and businesses to exercisecautionandadheretosafehandlingand disposal practices for all types of waste, particularly hazardous waste, as failure to do so poses serious health risks.

This appeal follows the tragic death of a 13year-old child, suspected to have ingested a poisonous substance from a refuse bag in Bluewater Bay recently.

In response to this incident, the Waste Management Sub-directorate under the Public Health Directorate has launched an intensive stakeholder awareness and engagement programme.Thisinitiativeaimstoeducatethepublic and businesses on the safe management of hazardous waste.

The awareness and engagement programme is part of the ongoing Separation at Source Programme (SSP). Separation at Source involves sorting waste materials into different categories (such as paper, plastic, glass, etc.) at the point of generation, whether in households or factories, to prevent recyclable materials from ending up in landfills. The programme will include public education meetings and door-to-door registration in Bluewater Bay, where the second phase of the SSP will be introduced.

During a public engagement meeting in Bluewater Bay on Wednesday, 5th February, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Public Health, Councillor Thsonono Buyeye, emphasisedthefocusonhazardouswastehandlingand disposal. “We will be working in partnership with waste pickers, households, businesses, and Nelson Mandela University (NMU) to improve in this area. It is unfortunate that the child’s deathoccurredjustastheDirectoratewasabout to launch the SSP in Bluewater Bay and surrounding areas,” said MMC Buyeye.

ThefirstphaseoftheSSP,introducedinWard 9, has been highly successful, with many residents participating.

Engagements with businesses will include educating them on the segregation of recyclable and non-recyclable materials. This aims to reduce the risk of waste reclaimers accessing dangerous waste items and ensure the safe disposal of hazardous substances.

The Directorate is also collaborating with NMU to leverage its expertise in environmental science, waste management, and chemical safety. The NMBM hopes to benefit from the university’s research to enhance its waste managementpractices, particularlyinthesafehandling and disposal of chemicals.

Meet new Hospice director

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

ST FRANCIS Hospice in Gqeberha, a vital institution since 1986, has appointed Carol Botha as its new director.

Botha, deeply connected to the hospice’s mission, was inspired to take on the role after her personal experience with her husband’s death after battling cancer three years ago.

“I’ve always admired the work St Francis Hospice does, and now I want to expand our services so more patients can access professional care during challenging times,” Botha said.

The hospice provides free palliative care, addressing the needs of patients with terminal illnesses such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, and Motor Neuron Disease, while offering crucial support to their families. Melanie Manson, of St Francis Hospice, highlighted, “We provide symptom relief and counselling free of charge, making our services accessible to all.” Botha agreed, “Our nurses are trained in counselling and we have an active psychosocial team that provides support. We also assist families with applications for grants to help ease their financial burden.”

ty involvement.

“It’s a delicate balancing act to provide free care and keep operations running,” she remarked.

The hospice faces various challenges, including operating in high-risk areas and addressing the stigma around palliative care. Furthermore, “There’s also still a general lack of understanding about palliative care and many people struggle with conversations about death and dying,” Botha explained.

Despite an ageing fleet of vehicles, which is one of their challenges, the dedicated home care team visits approximately 230 patients monthly. The hospice aids families by providing food parcels and assisting with grant applications.

Community support plays a pivotal role in the hospice’s success. Botha emphasised, “Schools, businesses, and individuals contribute significantly, ensuring we can continue our work.”

To increase awareness and understanding of palliative care, the hospice plans to use social media, educational materials, and public talks. Looking ahead, Botha aims to modernise technology to meet the growing demand for palliative care.

Robotics labs launched at Motherwell schools

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

success.” She highlighted the rewarding experience of watching young learners master practical, future-oriented skills, underscoring the importance of professional development for educators.

Botha then outlined her immediate goals, focusing on financial sustainability and modernisation. “Without secure funding, we cannot continue providing essential services. We need to improve technology, streamline operations, and adapt to the ever-changing healthcare landscape,” she explained.

Maintaining financial health is no small task, as Botha pointed out. The hospice relies heavily on donors, fund-raising, and communi-

Reflecting on the hospice’s evolution since 1986, Botha shared, “Our patient numbers have grown dramatically. Though demand surged with the HIV/AIDS epidemic, successful antiretroviral rollouts have brought declines. Yet, sustainable funding remains a challenge.”

Botha urged for continued community support, saying, “We constantly seek sponsorships and donations. Palliative care is about dignity at the end of life - not just for patients but their families too.”

This initiative was aimed at advancing Information Communications Technology in response to the rapid growth of digital technologies. The Eastern Cape Department of Education’s Malibongwe Mtima said, “Recognising the need for the education system to be agile and future-focused, the project equips South African learners with essential skills for tomorrow.”

The labs target Grades 8 and 9 learners, providing foundational knowledge in robotics, coding, mechanical design, and digital literacy, preparing them for an increasingly automated job market.

Twenty-five teachers from participating schools completed extensive training in robotics and coding, which included problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking. Practical projects and quizzes ensured teachers were ready to impart these key skills effectively.

This initiative followed the successful roll-out of two robotics labs in KwaZuluNatal in January 2024, benefiting thousands of high school learners. Supported by Sifiso Edtech, the Motherwell labs showcase collaborative efforts to meet the rising demand for roles in AI, machine learning, and robotics engineering.

Mtima added that with this investment, the Foundation seeks to equip youth with competencies such as analytical thinking, cognitive abilities, resilience, teamwork, and collaboration. Learners participating in the robotics curriculum can earn industry-recognised certifications, enhancing their prospects for higher education or the workforce.

Modise emphasised the transformative power of technology, saying, “By investing in technology education, the Shoprite Foundation is supporting a future with the necessary skills and opportunities for

Shoprite’s Corporate Communications and Public Relations Officer, Lwazi Nopote, said, “The partnership between the Department of Basic Education and the private sector highlights a commitment to expanding STEM education and digital literacy, empowering learners with the skills needed for future opportunities.”

The department’s Balosang Sanki Lerefolo concluded, “Through strengthened partnerships, we are expanding STEM education in schools. Shoprite’s investment enables Grade 10-12 learners to pursue IT and Computer Applications, with access to industry-recognised certifications for careers in the digital economy. This collaboration marks a critical milestone in preparing learners for the digital age.”

Arcadia learners win in Trolley Dash

SHANTI JAFTA

TWO learners from Arcadia Secondary School, Octavian Scharneck (head boy) and Lyndell de Wee (head girl), were nominated by their fellow studentstoparticipateintheTrolleyDash organised by Boardwalk Hotel and Casino as part of their outreach programme.

The two students had the opportunity to take anything they could from the shelves during a two-minute countdown. The Trolley Dash was valued at R3 000 each from Checkers.

The Boardwalk Human Resources Manager, Nopinki Timba, said, “As part of our outreach programme, we decided to approach different schools that we had worked with last year, Arcadia being one of them. We requested the principals to submit a motivation letter from the students explaining why they would be the best candidates forthisinitiative, andwechosethetwo most deserving learners to participate.”

Arcadia Secondary School principal, Jacqui Cloete, said, “We were excited, and they were excited as well, when we heard that they were chosen to participate in this event. These two learners have been in the top five every year since Grade 8, so it is good to see their hard work being rewarded. We, as a school, believe that it could not have been anyone else chosen to represent our school besides these two.”

Stating that they were filled with adrenaline beforehand, the two added that they had a strategy they planned to use, but that strategy went out the

When Lyndell spoke to PE Express before starting the dash, she shared that she was excited, but more eager to grab the meat than anything else.

Reflecting on their items, Octavian and Lyndell both said that the most expensive items in their trolleys were the meat. Both of their trolleys had a value of just over R3 000.

When Octavian was asked whether he had any regrets, he said, “I regret taking so much meat, because I did not get everything else that I wanted. I wanted more stationery, toiletries, and some snacks. My mind was fixated on

the most expensive thing in the shop, which was the meat.”

When Lyndell was asked whether she had any regrets, she responded, “No, I don’t. I am just grateful for the opportunity.”

In a statement, Boardwalk General Manager, Tati Tsunke, said, “We often take for granted how access to basic needs gives students the opportunity to fully participate in school. Being economically disadvantaged should not stand in the way of academic success, so we are delighted to have been able toassist, andwewishLyndellandOctavian every success in their final school year.”

Grey cricket to show their mettle in Western Cape

NOW it is the turn of the Grey High cricket team to fly the Gqeberha flag in the Western Cape.

Before them, Pearson and Framesby found it tough going against strong opposition on their outings in the Western Cape.

It is not going to be any easier for the Grey boys when they start their trip tomorrow with a T20 match against Bishops.

That will be followed by matches against Wynberg, Rondebosch and SACS over the next three days.

This past weekend, Framesby suffered losses against Boland Land-

bou and Somerset College after starting their tour by beating Punt in a T20 match by 10 wickets.

Boland made a solid 304/6 and bowled Framesby out for 224 to win by 80 runs.

Framesby batted first against Somerset but 136 runs were never going to be enough. Somerset reached 142/3 to win by 7 wickets.

Pearson had a good weekend playing at home in Gqeberha against Daniel Pienaar (DP) from Kariega.

In the T20 match, Jonno Holmes (2/25) was Pearson’s best bowler when DP made 103/5. Pearson replied with 105/7 to win by 3 wickets.

Sulaymaan Gangat guided Pearson to victory with an unbeaten knock of 39 runs.

The 50 overs match was played on Saturday and Pearson got home by 41 runs, scoring 143 and then restricting DP to 102.

Zac Zietsman, with 28 runs, and bowlers, Jayden Ward (3/13) and the captain, Cayden Wilson, (2/13) were the stars.

The previous weekend Pearson had it rough on their annual Cape Town visit.

In their first match, they were beaten by 9 wickets by Wynberg in a T20 encounter.

SA bowlers perform well in Germany

The Tenpin Bowling Association of South Africa selected a strong team of eight bowlers who performed well in tough lane conditions at the recent European Seniors Championship hosted in Leipzig, Germany. SA participated in the singles, doubles and team events. Midlands’ Dheran Bhoola, with a pinfall of 3,572, finished 27th out of 105 in the men’s division. Pictured are TBASA president and Bowling Federation Africa (BFA) acting president, Kiley Cassel (CG), Dheran Bhoola (Mid), Lelane De Sousa (CG), team manager, Max Cassel, EP vice president, Leon Cilliers, Richard Lotheringen (Eastern Gauteng), Ravin Soorajlal (Midlands), Gita Soorajlal (Mid), Debbi Fowler (Central Gauteng) assistant manager, Anil Sewchurran, and Coach Hector Roca (Spain).

Eight races lined up for Valentine’s Day

THERE will be a lot of love around at the Fairview racetrack in Greenbushes on Friday afternoon.

The Valentine’s Day meeting on the turf track consists of eight races and has all the ingredients to be a very competitive and exciting meeting.

The focus will be on the thoroughbred animals, maybe even a little more than usual on Valentine’s Day, as the love for them is mostly the reason why people get involved in the sport.

There is no feature race on the card but a strong Pinnacle Stakes over 1 400m is full of quality and should be the highlight of the day.

Next Friday two feature races will form part of the meeting which already has the tongues wagging.

The Lady’s Pendant and the Ibhayi Stakes will be run then and the nominations for those two races look really

good.

Therehasbeenalotofinterestfrom the Western Cape for this meeting on the 21st and that always provides for healthy rivalry between East and West on the day.

National champion trainer, Justin Snaith, is one of four Western Cape trainers who have entered horses to run on the 21st.

Candice Bass-Robinson, Glen Kotzen and Eric Sands are the others.

All of them have been very successful when visiting in the past but Snaith and Kotzen have been particularly strong at Fairview this season.

The Snaith stable has already won 13 races at Fairview this season and the Kotzen yard visited the winners’ box eight times.

The local trainers know they will have to be on top of their game to keep the silverware safely locked up in the

Jockey Craig Zackey gives a winning salute as Kingdundee storms home.

Bold Silvano room at Fairview.

Two stables who will be ready for anything are those of the local top dogs, Alan Greeff and Gavin Smith. They have been in brilliant form recently and promising young horses in their care have caught the eye in recent meetings.

One of them is Kingdundee who produced a wonderful run this past Friday when he won a Pinnacle Stakes over 1000m in impressive fashion. Kingdundee, last season’s East Cape Champion two-year-old, got away slow but recovered brilliantly and won going away under jockey Craig Zackey.

Zackey explained afterwards that Kingdundee slipped when he came out of the starting gates.

This put them on the back foot but they came from the back of the field to win easily. Zackey does not usually give a winning salute at the finish but he did this time to show just how impressedhewaswiththeperformance.

What made the victory even more remarkable was the fact that this was Kingdundee’s first race after a break of six months. There was a plan behind his absence, and it was clear for all to see what the plan was when Kingdundee arrived at the track to face the starter.

He almost doubled in size since his last appearance, looked much stronger and had a spring in his step. It is going to be exciting to follow Kingdundee’s progress.

But first things first – come feel the love at Fairview on Friday. Entry is free, so bring your Valentine along!

Pearson managed only 50 runs and the home side replied with 56 for the loss of only one wicket.

It was good to see that Pearson came back strongly in the second match. They beat Somerset College by 48 runs in a 50 overs clash.

Kade Myburgh played a beautiful knock of 52 runs, and scored from 68 balls. This led Pearson to a respectable total of 175 runs.

Myburgh was also the main man with the ball. He put the Somerset batters under immense pressure and took 3/26 in 6 overs.

Wilson also bowled extremely well. He took 2/11 in 9 tight overs

and Somerset were bowled out for 127 runs in the 43rd over.

Wilson produced another fine bowling display against Rondebosch. He took 3/51 in 10 overs. Rondebosch still managed to post an excellent score of 269/5 in 50 overs. Pearson struggled with the bat and was bowled out for 58 runs. Gangat put up a good fight. He topscored for Pearson with 27 runs but Rondebosch won easily by 211 runs. In other T20 matches, Westering beat Despatch by 5 wickets, DF Malherbe just pipped Nico Malan by 6 runs and Alex Road got the better of Otto du Plessis by 4 wickets.
