This initiative aligns with the national campaign theme, “Creating positive experiences for children through reading and stories,” and was aimed at fostering a culture of reading among children.
SRVMspokespersonZusipheJajisaid,“Research highlights the benefits of reading aloud, such as enhancing cognitive development and fostering imagination. By building vocabulary and language skills, reading not only cultivates a love for literature but also strengthens the bond between parent and child, creating opportunities for learning and connection. SRVM encourages families to continuethispracticebeyondthemonthtoinstil a lifelong love of reading in children.”
Insupportoftheseefforts, theEasternCape Department of Education (ECDoE) hosted a World Read Aloud Day (WRAD) celebration at Holy Cross High School in Mthatha. This
event brought together educators, learners, and literacy advocates to emphasise the importance of reading aloud.
World Read Aloud Day, an annual global event marking the start of Reading Aloud Month in February, has been instrumental in inspiring learners and educators to prioritise literacy. In a statement, Curriculum Management Chief Director, Chulekazi Xundu-Bula, noted that WRAD was initiated in 2010 by the nonprofit LitWorld. The Department embraced WRAD to address literacy challenges, especially among learners aged 10 who struggle with reading and writing. “By declaring February as the Month of World Read Aloud, we aim to drive meaningful change,” said Xundu-Bula.
In 2022, the Department launched a comprehensive reading strategy based on four pillars. WRAD focuses on the fourth pillar‘Communication, advocacy, and community involvement.’ This pillar unites parents, learners, education officials, and partners, fostering a collective effort to enhance literacy.
“WRAD presents a unique opportunity for our community to come together, take action and acknowledge the critical role reading plays in shaping minds and empowering individuals,” added Xundu-Bula. Linda Gwele, Chief Education Specialist for Foundation Phase, highlighted collaborative dialogues with partners to promote literacy effectively.
Sinoxolo Qungwana, Provincial Administrator from Nal’ibali, expressed pride in contributing to WRAD. Nal’ibali’s reading-forenjoyment campaign aims to spark a love of reading among children through oral storytelling and book-sharing, creating a culture of reading in homes, schools, and communities. “Schools’ story sessions are a great way to encourage children to develop a love for reading and storytelling,” Qungwana concluded.

JOHN Walton Secondary School was recently endowed with a study centre and sleeping quarters, where its matric learners can look forward to having two meals a day while they study for the year ahead.
The school received over R45 000 in sponsorship, both monetary and in-kind.
The KallaManie Benefit Foundation was established in memory of the late Manie ‘Kalla’ Daniels, who was a long-serving educator at John Walton. The Foundation, registered as a Non-Profit Company (NPC), donates all its proceeds to good causes. The late Daniels’ wife, Fredaline, nominated Jamie-Lee Daniels, Clinton Anderson, and Jeffrey du Preez as the Foundation’s founding directors.
The donation came in various forms, from local businesses such as the KallaManie Benefit Foundation donating R30 000, Score under Chill Beverages who donated R5 000, the JWSS Alumni Association donating R15 000, Buco Hardware Store, which donated building materials, as well as Andrew Rabie Secondary School and Ebrahim Wicomb who donated cutlery.
A current Grade 12 learner shared his heartfelt story about what the study centre would mean for him going into his matric year.
“My living conditions are not good because, during the day, I cannot study as there is too much noise around. We stay in a one-roomed flat in someone’s backyard. Sometimes, I have to study with a torch because the owner of the house switches off the electricity often, or sometimes there just is no electricity,” said the learner. He added that he has a desire to learn, but his circumstances do not allow him to do so. This is why he believes that the study centre will be beneficial for him and other
learners as well. “It will provide learners, such as me, with a safe and comfortable place to learn.”
The learner, filled with emotion, added,
“I am grateful that I will now have a place to get valuable study time, as well as a guaranteed warm plate of food and breakfast the next day.”
The sleeping quarters were equipped with numerous bunk beds, which were assembled by the school’s wood-working de-

study hall and sleeping quarters, which would accommodate approximately 20 learners both during the week and over the weekend for those in need.
“Learners who cannot study at home are encouraged to come to the school, where they will be provided with a meal and an opportunity to study among teachers. Having teachers around will give struggling learners an opportunity to ask questions should they get stuck,” Joseph added.
As a non-fee paying school receiving a subsidy from the Department of Education, the subsidy goes towards the school’s learning materials and staff salaries.
“Our school was meant to be a temporary structure (made of wood) in 1978. We were initially meant to move; however, that has not happened yet. So, we need money for the maintenance of the school as well,” Joseph said.
He added that the learners come from impoverished backgrounds, and in some cases, learners have additional challenges.
The Principal, Stephen de Bruin, said that the school moved from quintile 4 to quintile 3, which means that the learners are part of the government’s school feeding scheme.
“This initiative is important because some children who do not eat, do not have the energy to study throughout the day. This will eradicate that and give all learners an equal chance at succeeding in their studies,” De Bruin said.
partment to limit costs. Deputy Principal Phillip Joseph added that they hope to receive more donations as there is still space to convert the adjacent classroom into another sleeping quarter. The current arrangement will alternate between housing boys one week and girls the next. Should there be more funding, it will give learners equal opportunities to benefit from it. According to Joseph, a section of the school was converted into two sections: a
He also added that the study centre will be a sanctuary for learners who cannot study at home, and that here will be security guards patrolling the premises to ensure that the learners are safe.
Joseph concluded, “The school calls on other businesses and able community members to assist them in providing larger sleeping quarters for its learners to help them achieve an even higher pass rate than last year’s 80.1%.”
The Uitenhage Public Library recently hosted a Black History Month programme where the Grade 7 students from Fountain of Life were invited. According to the Senior Librarian of the Uitenhage Public Library, Nompumelelo Ngcoko, the library aims to highlight Black History Month by celebrating its own artists. She added that the library supports informal education, while schools promote formal education. Ngcoko stated, ‘Hosting this event will enhance the learners’ presentation skills.’ At the event, learners were given an opportunity to present an African leader who made a significant impact on society. Ngcoko further mentioned that they hope events like these will foster self-belief among learners, encouraging them to dream big and not to underestimate themselves based on their current circumstances. STARTING her modelling journey in 2022 with TMA Models agency in Kariega, Angelique Phela (19), a Financial Management final year student, sets her sights on bringing the coveted Teen Miss Universe title to Kariega. The main event is set to take place in Polokwane at the Meropa Sun Hotel from March 21 until 23.
“Helping people is part of me, which is why I chose to participate in a competition this big; I will use my platform to do good in my community,” Angelique said as she shared why she entered Teen Miss Universe 2025.
“I love taking on challenges, meeting new people and making new friends, no matter what background one comes from. I am not someone who likes being in a box; I want to explore and try everything while I still can,” she added.
Coming from a place where she thought she wasn’t good enough, she decided to try modelling, which in turn boosted her confidence and made her believe in herself more. Her parents, Shaun Soyes and Sweetness Phela, confirmed that ever since Angelique started modelling, she has grown from being shy and reserved to being outgoing and talkative.
She has participated in many pageants to date, but Teen Miss Universe is the biggest competition she has taken part in. She also shared that pageant competitions are fun for her as they prioritise elegance and presenting yourself as a lady, and that it is not only about the crown but supporting other models and being a role model for young girls.
According to Trish Basson, the owner of TMA Models, Angelique is a dedicated model, respectful and works well with other models.
“Sherecentlystartedasapre-traineeteacher, which starts her journey to become a teacher attheagency.Shehasbeenexcellinginthisrole thus far, as she trains models’ skills under our guidance. She can work in a group and is a fast learner.Sheisalwaysfriendlyandreliable, also displaying a positive attitude,” Basson said.
Basson believes that Angelique would make a great Teen Miss Universe because she has a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and her heart is in the right place.
“She is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in, and she will go out of her way to help someone. I believe she would use the platform to create a change in people’s lives and not only see it as a sash,” Basson added.
Although she started modelling as a shy girl, Basson believes that she has grown in confidence and started believing in herself. Even though she started modelling recently, and was placed in the top three positions in various inhouse TMA competitions, she has always remained humble.
“I believe she has grown in a few years through modelling because she has been patient, remained dedicated and never gave up despite disappointments. She saw disappointments as challenges to improve herself. I have seen her grow from a shy girl to a confident young lady who believes in herself,” she said.
Shaun Soyes, Angelique’s father, said that he and Angelique’s mother, Sweetness Phela, did all that they could to help Angelique get where she is in the competition now, saying that they spent over R35 000, which is running the family dry.
“As a parent, you want to help your child reach their dream. This has been her dream for so long and I had to do all that I could to help her, which is why I appeal to other community members and businesses to help our girl. She is determined to do well not only for herself but for the community around her as well,” Soyes said.
Angelique shared that chasing a big dream might bring greater joy at the end of the day if you attack it head on, and uses that as her mantra in life going forward.
For more information on how to help Angelique bring the prestigious title to Kariega, email her at phelaangelique@gmail.com or follow her on her social media platforms, Angelique Phela.

THE Absa Run Your City Series is proud to welcome global running sensation, Adriaan Wildschutt, to compete on South African soil at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
As one of the world’s top athletes, his participation is a significant boost for South African road running, local sports, and the prestige of the Absa Run Your City Series.
Followingabreakthroughyearin2024,Wildschutt, who holds four national track records, has announced his intention to pursue the SA 10km record at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K.
His confidence in targeting the 27:35 SA record set by Precious Mashele at the inaugural Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K in 2023 is well-founded. The American-based top runner produced no fewer than six South African records last season including 3000m (7:32.99), 5000m (12:56.67), and 5000m indoors (12:56.76), as well as a new national 10 000m mark of 26:50.64 which accompanied a memorable 10th place finish in the Olympic final at the Stade de France last August.
“I’m looking forward to participating at the Absa Run Your City Gqeberha 10K,” confirms Wildschutt. “I chose the race because I hear that it’s a fast course and I remember the South African record being set there. I love competing, and sometimes that leads to records. I appreciate and respect Precious’s record and would never undermine the quality it took to set that record. However, I am aiming to break the South African record in Gqeberha and hopefully make it a lasting one.”
As one of the most sought-after track and road running stars in the United States, where he has beenbasedforthepastsevenyears, andaprominent contender on the lucrative European circuit, his decision to kick off his road running season on home soil speaks volumes.
“To be honest, the race in Gqeberha lines up best with my schedule. Training has been going very well in the last five weeks. We were able to continue to train at a high level. However, the next six weeks are going to be critical leading up to some track races and the 10km in Gqeberha. I am very excited about that, and I am hopeful that everything will go as planned and I can perform at the best level I can.”
Performingatthehighestlevelagainstworldclass competitors on African soil is not the only reason the Ceres-born SA 5000m champion chose Nelson Mandela Bay over other destinations.
Having run a number of 10km road races in the Western Cape as a junior before moving to the US to study, 26-year-old Wildschutt reveals that through his brother, Nadeel, who ran 28:07 at the Absa Run Your City Durban 10K last year, he has been following the Absa Run Your City Series from across the Atlantic and was more than ready to grab the opportunity to take part when it came. Wildschutt confirms that he spoke with his brother about the series, who had nothing but praise for the entire organisation.
“Iwasstokedtohearaboutthat, whichiswhy I wanted to compete in it in an attempt to do well,” he adds. “I also want to try something differentandgotoadifferentcityIhaveneverbeen to before. Racing in South Africa is unique. The runningcultureisdifferent.Ilovethefoodafterwards and the vibe that follows the race. I feel a whole lot of people know me better and I can share a great experience with all of them.”
“We are excited to welcome Adriaan Wildschutt to the Absa Run Your City Series in 2025,” says Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports and Founder of the Absa Run Your City Series.
“His exceptional performance at the Olympics in France last August had South Africans
on the edge of their seats — a proud moment for the nation. Setting a new national 10,000m recordof26:50.64andfinishing10thontheworld stage showcased his incredible talent. Adriaan brings excitement and quality racing to the series. We firmly believe that not only is a new SA 10km record within reach but there’s also a strong possibility it could be shattered convincingly. We’re equally excited to see how the rest of the field responds to his record-breaking ambitions on race day. Spectators can expect toptier competition and numerous standout performances. We look forward to witnessing the action unfold in Gqeberha as Adriaan pushes the boundaries of road running on home soil.”

Grobler sê die gholfdag was weereens ’n reusesukses.
