Urgent calls for Uitenhage Provincial Hospital improvement

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

WHEN everyone took a much-needed break over the festive season, Ward 51 Councillor, Roelf Basson, was inundated with complaints from residents of Kariega and Despatch regarding deteriorating conditions at the hospital.

Concerns included insufficient staffing, lack of waiting space, and patients forced to wait on the floor and even outdoors. “I immediately contacted my Constituency Leader, MPL Horatio Hendricks, and we agreed to escalate these concerns to MPL Jane Cowley,” explained Basson. “This prompted an unannounced visit to gain first-hand experience of the alarming conditions.”

Alongside DA Spokesperson for Health in the Provincial Legislature, MPL Jane Cow-

ley, Basson then conducted an oversight visit to the Provincial Hospital last week. The aim was to assess the facility’s current state and highlight issues demanding immediate attention. Their findings highlighted a dire need for intervention and improvements in healthcare services for local residents.

During their visit, Cowley and Basson observed several issues. “The hospital grounds were unkempt, contributing to an overall negative image. Notably, the nurses’ quarters were in disrepair and unused. The outpatients department, found to be previously problematic, was quiet due to the rain, complicating assessment efforts. However, the Trauma Unit told a different story: overcrowding was evident, with staff shortages resulting in patients waiting for up to 72 hours to be admitted. Additionally,

a ward closure due to staffing constraints exacerbated wait times and reduced efficiency.”

Other concerns included the alleged absence of the hospital’s permanent CEO, with management reportedly occurring remotely from a district office. Roofing leaks affected patient areas, including the Pediatric Ward. Additionally, Basson said broken sewer pipes presented significant health hazards outside the building. An anticipated upgrade of critical hospital areas, which could have alleviated many issues, has reportedly been shelved.

In response to these findings, MPL Jane Cowley committed to raising the matter with the Department of Health in the legislature. “Our findings will be fed into the system with questions posed to the department,” she confirmed.

In October last year, the UD Express reported on the hospital’s bed and staff shortage concerns raised by National Coordinator for the Independent Civic Organisation of South Africa (ISANCO), Desmond White. “Patients, especially elderly patients, lying on the floor, waiting to get medical attention. He said some had been waiting for as long as a week without help,” White relayed at the time.

Eastern Cape Health Department Spokesperson Mkhululi Ndamase acknowledged the identified challenges, highlighting that they align with issues observed in recent oversight visits by the MEC across various districts. “All the issues are receiving responsiveness but not all of them can be addressed at the same time because of budgetary constraints that all parties, including the DA, are well aware of,” Ndamase noted.

Vandalisedsubstationleaves Khayelitshaindarkness

NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality’s head of Electricity and Energy, Councillor Ziyanda Mnqokoyi, has urged the community to report and combat vandalism following a substation collapse in Khayelitsha, Kariega.

The vandalism incident on January 13 has caused significant power outages to many homes.

Teams are working on-site, but the extensive damage will require about two weeks to fix, although typically such repairs span six months.

“We have been conducting oversight visits throughout last week in the affected MRM6 substation building which has unfortunately collapsed due to vandalism, resulting in a loss of power supply and we can report that work has started. However, to restore power a comprehensive scope of work is required, including building of the distribution substation, procurement and installation of switchgear and testing and commissioning.”

The MMC also condemned the criminal actions and called for residents to report any information to the authorities. The restoration timeline, set to restore supply by January 31, includes trenching starting January 17.

The Municipality appealed for patience and encourages reporting vandalism incidents to local authorities.

In conclusion, Mnqokoyi further called on any resident with information regard-

After years of being in the same office, Milinda Ferreira, the Ward Councillor’s assistant to Councillor Basson, told ‘UD Express’ that they still receive calls from the public stating they do not know where the Ward 51 office is located. On January 20, a sign was erected in front of the traffic circle at the corner of Graaf-Reinet Road and North Street near Willow Dam, directing traffic to their office. The office is situated at the corner of North Street and Couldridge Crescent. From left are Marius Roach, Milinda Ferreira and Ward 51 Councillor, Roelf Basson.

Rotary offers bursaries to students

THE Rotary Club of Uitenhage’s Education Trust wishes through the granting of bursaries to assist needy students who reside in Kariega or Despatch, to obtain post- matric qualifications at any recognised South African tertiary institution.

Students who have obtained at least 60% in their matric examination, or students who are at present studying at a tertiary institution may apply.

Applicants are advised that additional financing is necessary as the bursary from the Rotary Trust may not be sufficient to cover all fees for the year.

Bursary application forms are available at the UD Express office in Graaff-Reinet Road, Kariega.

The deadline for applications is on Friday, February 14, 2025. Completed forms can be handed in (in an envelope) at the UD Express office. Copies of all relevant documents as requested should accompany the bursary form.

Even though she started her matric year still mourning the death of her mother, Daphne de Koker, in the previous year, Venédro Caylah de Koker was determined to do well, and honour her late mother's memory.

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

IN a year marked by unprecedented challenges, Abdallah SalieandVenédroCaylahDeKoker, two inspiring matriculants from Uitenhage High School, have proven that perseverance and resilience can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

Despite facing two devastating floods that hit Kariega, both learners achieved commendable passes in their matric year, exemplifying determination and grit.

Abdallah Salie’s journey

Abdallah Salie’s path to success was fraught with difficulties, including the lack of electricity and hazardous road conditions that isolated him at home and led to rescheduled exams.

Yet, he adapted resourcefully, using car batteries to power lights for studying. Salie attributed his success to extra online classes, motivational guidance, and the unwavering support of his family, who helped him maintain a positive mindset.

Community support, including fund-raisers and church

shelters, highlighted the collective spirit aiding the teen’s journey.

Reflecting on his achievements, Salie proudly mentioned his academic achievements and sports awards. “The highlights included the matric farewell and valedictory night,” he shared, beaming with pride.

Despite failing in the second term, hisbachelor’spassisanexample of his determination.

Now, Salie plans to pursue a qualification towards electrical trade, and is eagerly awaiting placement.

Venédro Caylah De Koker expressed immense gratitude for passing matric amid her trials. Afrikaans and history were her favouritesubjects, theformerfor its beauty and diversity, and the latter for its profound connection to today’s world.

Her class teacher, Cec-lynn Matroos, was a pivotal support, inspiring De Koker to rise above her circumstances. “She was my shoulder to cry on, and I wouldn’t have made it without her,” Venédro said.

The Sosad Foundation, aptly named “Saving Our Sons and Daughters,” focuses on empowering learners by educating them on positive coping strategies for everyday challenges and guiding them towards making informed choices. The primary objectives of the organisation are to protect youth vulnerable to alcohol and drugs, encourage participation in sports, recreational, and entrepreneurship programmes, and conduct awareness campaigns on the dangers of alcohol and drug use.

as a prefect with academic responsibilities, De Koker honed her time management skills. She not only excelled academically but also contributed to the Christian society and participated in initiatives like the Eco-limited and Interact societies, aiding those in need.

Having endured personal hardships, including the loss of her mother, De Koker’s resilience shone through. “Studying by candlelight, going to bed hungry, yet overcoming these challenges - my motivation came from my mother’s sacrifices,” she recalled.

Driven by these experiences, she aims to study teaching at Nelson Mandela University, aspiring to follow in her late mother’s footsteps and inspire future generations.

Both Abdallah and Venédro offer invaluable advice to other learners: persistence is key, and it’s never too late to pursue academic goals.

As Salie noted, “There’s light at the end of the tunnel, and hard work pays off.” De Koker added, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago; the second-best time is now.”

best. As a leader, I believe in leading by example,” Arends said. Reflecting on an isiXhosa saying, “Umntu ngumntu, ngabantu,” that promotes the spirit of unity and collaboration, he highlighted the importance of community identity. Arends also recalled the words of Myles Munroe, “When purpose is not known, abuse is inevitable,” which underpins his advocacy and leadership.

The programmes offered by the Sosad Foundation cater to both primary and secondary schools. In primary education, they build foundational skills and reinforce learning. For secondary students, the focus shifts to deepening academic understanding and encouraging informed decisionmaking. Key engagement methods include storytelling, providing clear examples, using visual aids, and fostering a sense of community within classrooms. “Everyone has a story to tell about their lives,” Arends emphasised.

Last year, Sosad Foundation made notable waves in schools like Gamble Street Senior Secondary, Bonzai High School, Riebeek College for Girls, and Uitenhage Primary School. They have also been invited to Seagull Primary School. One of the foundation’s proud achievements has been referring four children to rehabilitation services in collaboration with social workers at the Department of Social Development. In their efforts, they are currently partnering with SAPS, the Department of Social Development, and

the United Pentecostal Church Youth in Kersogie Street - a collaboration met with excitement and appreciation from Arends.

“The impact of our programme rests on two pillars of evaluation: formative and summative,” Arnold explained. “Formative evaluation assesses needs at the initial stages, while summative evaluation relies on group feedback to measure achievement and satisfaction.”

Despite admirable progress, challenges persist, such as a lack of support from the business community and interest in volunteering. The organisation also faces equipment shortages and funding constraints, but good Samaritans cur-

rently assist with operational necessities like typing.

Looking ahead, Sosad Foundation will host substance abuse training with the Department of Social Development. They’ve also been invited to Heideveld, Cape Town, for a programme during the March holidays. Arends appealed to the Kariega community for assistance in making their Cape Town endeavour a reality.

To the residents of Kariega, Arends said in conclusion, “The greatness of a community is measured by the compassionate acts of its members.”

Baby Mi-Landri’s journey continues

SHANTI JAFTA

LITTLE Mi-Landri van Ghent entered the world on July 10, 2024, at Uitenhage Provincial Hospital, bringing boundless joy to her family.

Despite an uneventful pregnancy, however, her journey took an unexpected turn as she faced a lifethreatening heart condition that few could have foreseen.

Diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA) at just seven weeks old, her tiny heart struggled to sustain her, thrusting her family into a whirlwind of fear and uncertainty.

Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of good Samaritans like Ward

51 Councillor Roelf Basson, DA Provincial Health Spokesperson Jane Cowley, and a dedicated medical team, Mi-Landri’s story became one of triumph.

With faith, community support, and life-saving surgery at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town, Mi-Landri defied the odds and is now thriving as a happy, healthy baby girl.

According to Councillor Basson, MPL Jane Cowley visited the hospital to conduct an oversight assessment and address urgent healthcareissuesraisedbylocalresidents and officials.

Upon completion of this oversight, Councillor Basson suggested MPLCowleymeetMi-Landriinperson for the first time after a prior invitation was extended to Basson.

“As soon as I mentioned it, she was so excited to meet her. She immediately said yes,” he said.

As this was Basson’s first visit since welcoming the van Ghent family at the airport post Mi-Landri’s operation, he mentioned that even though he received pictures from the family periodically, he felt good seeing her like that.

Basson added, “As soon as we got there, she was crying because we wereunfamiliarfacesofcourse, but after a while, she became more acquainted with us.”

As Cowley was holding and playing with Mi-Landri, Basson said that Cowley felt like a grandmother in that moment. Sharing with UD Express, Mi-Landri’s mother, Stephanie van Ghent said, “It has been four months since Mi-Landri underwent her open-heart surgery, andI’mdelightedtosharethatshe’s doing remarkably well. She’s growing day by day, and we are so grate-

ful to see her thriving.”

Unfortunately, in her words, Van Ghent was not able to meet MPL Cowley to express her gratitude in person, butinformedthemthatthey weremorethanwelcometovisither home as her mum was with MiLandri at the time.

“Jane Cowley has been a tremendous blessing to our family. She and Councillor Basson have supported us in so many ways, and I cannot thank them enough for everything they have done for us and for MiLandri.

It’s heart-warming to see a different side of Mi-Landri now; a healthier, happier baby. She’s gained weight and looks so much more like the baby she’s meant to be. She is truly a big blessing to our lives,” ex-

pressed Van Ghent.

Although Mi-Landri has to make regular scheduled check-ups at Dora Nginza Hospital, her progress so far has been amazing as described by her mother.

“As a mother, it’s been a difficult journey, and I’m still working throughthetraumaofwhatwewent through. But I find comfort in knowing the worst is behind us, and seeing how well Mi-Landri is doing after such a major surgery is a blessing,” added Van Ghent.

She hopes that Mi-Landri’s story can be an inspiration to others facing similar circumstances.

“I extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who contributed to MiLandri’s care and gave her a fighting chance at life.”
