New era for agriculture in the Eastern Cape

Kariega recently hosted a SMME workshop

SHANTI JAFTA

THE Economic Development, Tourism, and Agriculture Directorate of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) recently hosted a SMME workshop at the Kariega Town Hall.

The session was led by Portfolio Head, Councillor Bassie Kamana; Acting Executive Director, Wandisile Makwabe, and Yandisa Jubase from the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA). This workshop forms part of Small Business and Informal Trading Month and is aimed at engaging directly with small business entrepreneurs. It provides an open platform for SMMEs to voice their concerns, share challenges, and identify areas where they need support. Insights from this engagement will contribute to shaping the upcoming SMME Summit, set to take place later this month at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

In his opening remarks, Councillor Kamana emphasised the critical role that SMMEs play in driving local economic growth, creating jobs, and uplifting communities. He reaffirmed the municipality’s commitment to building an inclusive economy by supporting entrepreneurs and informal traders with better access to opportunities, infrastructure, and funding. Kamana encouraged participants to speak openly about their experiences and challenges, assuring them that their input would directly influence future policies and programmes. “This is your space,” he said. “Your voice matters, and it will shape how we work together to build a thriving SMME sector that truly reflects the resilience and innovation of our people.”

A diverse group of SMMEs representing multiple sectors actively contributed their insights and perspectives during the workshop. Their varied experiences and challenges provided valuable input to shape ongoing support initiatives.

Following this, the Automotive Industry Development Centre (AIDC) Eastern Cape delivered an in-depth presentation, outlining their wide range of programmes and support processes designed specifically to assist and empower

Food safety blitz on spaza shops in KwaNobuhle

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Public Health Directorate recently led a coordinated food safety blitz in KwaNobuhle, targeting spaza shops that had previously applied for Certificates of Acceptability. Thembi Blaai, Manager of Environmental Health, stated that all 13 premises they visited have submitted applications with the municipality. However, they are still non-compliant with the food-related legislation, nor do they have the relevant paperwork. She added that the zoning of the shops is an issue, as all 13 aforementioned business structures are illegally constructed, except for one or two. The municipality will never approve those structures, she said. She also said that these are only 13 of many irregular structures, adding that the illegal structures have been closed by the relevant department.

SMMEs in the region. Their comprehensive overview highlighted practical opportunities for growth and development tailored to local entrepreneurs.

Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, commemorates Youth Day with a powerful message. “Youth Day is a tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of the young people who changed our nation’s path. This year’s theme, ‘Skills for the Changing World, Empowering Youth for Meaningful Economic Participation,’ calls on us to face today’s challenges head-on, from a rapidly evolving economy and rising unemployment to the digital revolution transforming the job market. To the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay: You are brilliant, capable, and powerful. You are not just the future; you are the present. This is your time, and we are with you.”

SMME owner, Khanyisile Mnyaka of Vulindaba Training/Productions shared, “I have been following the SMME programme, this being the second because we as artists are often undermined and go unseen. I have come to realise that there is a plan for us and our cries have been heard. I look forward to the Summit to be held on June 20. We also look forward to seeing you here, who have not been to the workshops and hopefully what was promised to us, happens.”

Youth Voices on Youth Month

A speaker, Zintle Mgandela shared, “Youth month to me means exploring the freedom. The freedom to explore who I am, what I love, and what I stand for. It’s also a call to other youth to do the same. This month is about growth, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally. Because we know, it’s when I learn how to think critically, feel deeply, that I can be able to choose wisely.”

Vuyisa Ngqondi shared, “Youth Month makes me think of the influential role that young people have played in the history of our country - particularly their bravery and sacrifices in the fight against apartheid and the 1976 Soweto Uprising. To South Africa’s youth: this is your time. Make the most of your youth. Find the gift that lives inside of you, your talent, your passion, and carve your name. This is the season to

invest in self-growth - mentally & emotionally. The sky is not the limit, you are!”

Esethu Madlwabinga shared, “June 16 marks a pivotal moment in South African history, honouring the bravery of the youth who led the 1976 Soweto Uprising. Their fight against injustice and demand for education and freedom reshaped our nation and laid the groundwork for democracy. Youth Month is a time to remember their sacrifice and recognize the power of young people to drive change. It calls on us to support, empower, and listen to today’s youth as we continue building the future they fought for.”

Ahlume Potelwa shared, “Youth Month holds deep meaning for me. I have the privilege of working in a space that, in the past, was not accessible to people like me. The bravery and sacrifices of the youth of 1976 opened doors that allow me to dream-and to actively pursue those dreams.”

Yolanda Mpayipheli, a speaker, said, “Youth month is a time of reflection! I encourage youth to take the time to look at what we have achieved over the year/s and celebrate it. Also remind ourselves that we are still in the period of growth and self discovery; we don’t know it all. You have the power to create the life you want, so go for it!”

One of the speakers, Chane Burrell, said, “Youth Day reminds me that young people have the power to change the world. We are brave, we are smart, and our voices matter. We are the dreamers, the doers, the leaders of tomorrow, starting today. Let’s learn from the past, take charge of the present, and build a future that reflects our hopes, values, and determination. Let’s learn, grow, and shine because the future belongs to us, and we are ready to lead it with courage and purpose.”

Nelao Langa from Momentum said, “Youth Month is about recognition and responsibility. Being young is not about age, but about the energy to dream, passion to act, ability to shape the future. It’s a call to rise, to find our voices,

EASTERN CAPE:

Chamber, Agbiz join forces to drive agricultural growth

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber and the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa (Agbiz), have initiated a strategic partnership, setting the stage for enhanced collaboration across the agricultural value chain in the Eastern Cape.

This partnership reflects a joint commitment to advancing agribusiness development and leveraging shared resources to overcome key challenges.

Agriculture is a cornerstone of the local economy, particularly in regions such as the Sundays River Valley, which is the second largest citrus producing area in South Africa.

The country produces almost 60% of global mohair production with the Eastern Cape accounting for 90% of the country’s total production, and contributes approximately 30% of the country’s milk supply, further underlining the sector’s critical role in both food production and employment.

“This partnership with Agbiz comes at a time when, given all the global uncertainty especially in global manufacturing supply

chains, there is an urgent need to strengthen the diversification of our economy and unlocking the potential of our region’s agricultural economy is one of the key ways to do this,” said Denise van Huyssteen, CEO of the Chamber.

“Agriculture is one of the Eastern Cape’s greatest economic assets. Through strategic partnerships like this, we can help facilitate greater investment, foster innovation and ensure that the sector is supported in overcoming the logistical, infrastructural and security challenges it faces.”

Alongside the automotive industry, the agricultural sector is also a major user of port infrastructure in Nelson Mandela Bay. Both sectors have actively contributed to the Chamber’s Transport and Logistics Task Team, working to resolve bottlenecks that impact export efficiency and competitiveness.

Security is another priority where collaboration has yielded tangible results.

Agriculture has played a vital role in initiatives such as Eyes to Ears, alongside the Chamber, SAPS, Agri-Eastern Cape and other stakeholders.

The sector is a key participant in the Safety and Security Task Team, with efforts to address challenges related to strengthening security in Addo Road, an important route for transporting the produce from the Sundays River Valley to the city’s harbours.

“We anticipate that there will also be opportunities to include Agbiz in our global gaps and low carbon economy workstreams of our Local Economy Reinvention Think Tank, with particular focus on the hemp industry and agro-processing which can emerge from this.”

According to Theo Boshoff, CEO of Agbiz, “This partnership with the Chamber allows us to align on key policy and infrastructure matters that directly impact agribusiness.

“The Eastern Cape holds immense potential - from citrus and dairy to wool and mohair - and we are committed to supporting a conducive environment for investment and growth.

“By working closely with the Chamber, we can ensure that the voice of agribusiness is heard, and that real, coordinated action follows.”

DIARY | DAGBOEK

The partnership will also foster stronger information sharing and thought leadership, with Agbiz bringing national and international insights to the table.

To this end, Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist at Agbiz and one of South Africa’s foremost agricultural economists, will be participating in a panel discussion at the Chamber’s upcoming Annual General Meeting.

“Having Wandile Sihlobo, Agbiz’s Chief Economist, at our AGM is a clear indication of the importance of this partnership and the shared vision for agriculture as a driver of inclusive growth,” van Huyssteen added.

“We look forward to robust discussions on how to build a more resilient, productive, and secure agricultural sector that benefits our metro, province and communities.”

This partnership marks the beginning of a collaboration designed to create a sustainable impact in the agricultural economy of the Eastern Cape and also to empower agribusiness and build a stronger regional economy.

Nhaka The Legacy Group

SOME people become entrepreneurs by chance. For me, it was destiny. I always knew I wanted to run my own business, but that belief was deeply rooted in watching my mother.

With only a primary school education and no formal employment after marriage, she supported our family through a series of businesses. More than that, she empowered women in our community to start their own ventures, forming investment societies that have transformed lives for over three decades.

I knew that, with the education I had, I could take that legacy even further. That legacy became Nhaka The Legacy Group – a construction company based in Port Elizabeth that specialises in building maintenance, repairs and renovations.

Entering a new phase of growth

When I came across the Raizcorp programme, I was at a critical point in my business journey. I had survived the early startup stages but needed support to build something sustainable and scalable. When I applied and was accepted into the programme in 2023, I knew I was stepping into something that could change everything. And it did.

From day one, I felt like I had walked into a community of people who genuinely wanted to see me succeed. I’d been through business coaching before, so I had some idea of what to expect – but nothing prepared me for the depth of learning and support I’d receive.

I felt like I’d gained a board of directors for my business: a trusted team I could bounce ideas off, get honest feedback from and grow alongside.

learned has been in financial literacy. I came into the programme with a basic understanding of finance, but Raizcorp took it to another level. I now use a monthly financial dashboard that gives me a real-time view of my business performance.

For example, in early 2024, I anticipated a cash flow strain due to overlapping, capital-intensive projects.

Thanks to my new skills, I secured an overdraft facility in advance and arranged invoice discounting to maintain liquidity. That foresight protected the business during a financially challenging period.

I’ve also implemented structured systems across the business. That’s allowed my team to operate efficiently, even when I’m not around. In fact, I took a two-week break in 2024 –during active projects – and the work didn’t skip a beat. That was a proud moment for me. Beyond finance and systems, I’ve also grown as a leader and entrepreneur. I used to think of myself as a technician, always involved in the day-to-day operations.

But Raizcorp taught me the importance of stepping back and leading strategically. I’ve since delegated more responsibilities, empowering my team to manage projects and freeing me up to focus on growth.

From survival to impact

Since joining the programme, I’ve grown my team to nine people, both permanent and contract.

It humbles me to know that I’m now providing a stable income to people who had nearly given up hope.

In today’s economic climate, I understand what that means for their families – and I don’t take that lightly. It’s an honour to be part of their journey, just as Raizcorp and VWSA have been part of mine.

First youth rugby squads prepare to represent EP at nationals

THE LSEN and U/13 squads will be the first players to represent Eastern Province (EP) at the upcoming national youth rugby tournaments.

This year, the U/18 LSEN (learners with special education needs) Week takes place in Bethal, Mpumalanga, from June 27 to July 2.

The EP u/13s don't have to travel that far. They stay in the Eastern Cape for their week, which is from June 30 to July 4, at Selborne College in East London.

Coach JD Esterhuizen won't have to work too much on combinations and interplay as most in the LSEN group of 22 players are from Bergsig in Kariega.

Bergsig has 16 players in the squad. The Gqeberha school, Westview (4), has the second-best representation.

There is one player, Mynhardt Hattingh, from another Gqeberha school, Cape Recife, in the group.

With Border not at the week, EP included Liza Tetani, a player from Baysville in East London.

The EP boys are expected to be very competitive at the week. Bergsig has produced solid

performances against strong opposition this year, which is an indication that EP will be up for the task.

The LSEN Week is always a crowd favourite, with running rugby the name of the game. In this regard, EP certainly has the speed and skill to match the other provinces.

What might be a challenge is the expected cold conditions. Bethal should be much colder than the East Cape visitors are used to at this time of the year.

Twelve schools are represented in the u/13 squad of 23 players.

Jeffreys Bay and Albertyn have four players each in the group, followed by Grey with three.

Sunridge, Gill College and Paul Sauer all have two players each going to East London.

The schools with one representative each are Westering, Union, Port Alfred, Woodridge, Kabega and Hankey.

It will be a very tough start at the tournament for the EP boys. They take on the mighty Western Province (WP) in their first match.

The Blue Bulls and WP are considered the top u/13 sides in the country. It will be an

enormous challenge, but also a huge opportunity, for the EP players to show what they can do against strong opposition.

The U/13 Academy side also has a difficult opener. They play against the Southwestern Districts.

All the other EP squads are also hard at work in preparation for the respective upcoming events.

The U/18 Craven Week team suffered a setback. The loose head prop from Grey High, Daniel Naude, had to be replaced.

"He had an accident on his motorbike. He's been replaced in the squad by Janu Janse van Rensburg (Nico Malan)," confirmed the secretary of the EP High Schools Rugby Association, Fenner Barnard.

Coaching team: JD Esterhuizen (head coach), Jeandré Schoultz (assistant), Malan Marais (manager), Fernando Uithaler (technical analyst).
