This strategic infrastructure project, funded by the Department of Water and Sanitation through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Grant (RBIG) and implemented by Amatola Water, aims to strengthen water security in the Sarah Baartman District.
The development has increased raw water storage capacity from 20.2 million litres to 34.2 million litres, significantly improving supply reliability for over 16 000 residents in Nqweba, Bontrug (Moses Mabida), Msengeni, and surrounding communities.
The unveiling brought together key leaders united by a common goal: delivering clean, sustainable water to the people.
Among the dignitaries present were Sarah Baartman District Executive Mayor, Deon de Vos, Sundays River Valley Municipality Mayor, Solethu Lucas, Chairperson of the Multi-Party Women’s Caucus, Lindelwa Dunjwa, Mike Primmer, CEO of Lower Sundays River Water Users Association and officials from Amatola Water Board and the Department of Water and Sanitation.
The completed project includes a newly constructed 14 million-litre raw water lay dam at the Kirkwood Water Treatment Works, two 3-million-litre steel reservoirs; one in Kirkwood serving Aqua Park and Bergsig, and another in Bontrug for Moses Mabida and surrounding areas, along with essential infrastructure like inlet chambers, interconnecting pipework, and security fencing to ensure efficient water zoning and distribution.

normally get support from National Government. We are here now because intervention from National Government is needed to help the irrigation of this agro-town. We built this dam and opened the reservoirs because the water must supply every area of Nqweba. It will help the people greatly, because water is essential to life.”
Majodina added that the municipality is aware that water leaks are prevalent, however, they cannot identify every water leak on their own.
They need community involvement in identifying more water leaks. A plan will be implemented and shared through the Ward council members to get an on-the-ground liaison to bridge the gap between the municipality and the community.
Mike Primmer, CEO of Lower Sundays River Water Users Association said, “This reservoir is important because it allows greater assurance to local community, as well as greater adaptability from the Water User Association in the supply of raw water, because it provides greater storage and balancing capacity. In the past, the maintenance that we have done on the canal system has been very restricted by the amount of water we are able to supply to the community, because they take preference in terms of water supply.
“This buys us a little more time to do our maintenance and our refurbishment programme a lot more efficiently. During what we call the ‘winter dry period’ in which we close for about four days to make repairs, it will now buy us a little more time to do more maintenance more efficiently, ultimately costing us less.”
here. It is important to note that this is a small area, with a small municipality that does not
He added, “To summarise, the costs are going to be considerably less, and the benefit to the community will be greater, now that they have a greater assurance of supply. I think this dam is going to alleviate all the pressure on municipality to supply water to its residents.”
TRANSPORT Minister, Barbara Creecy, along with Deputy Minister, Mkhuleko Hlengwa, Eastern Cape MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor, Babalwa Lobishe, and senior executives from SANRAL, conducted site inspections on Tuesday, April 15, showcasing significant projects driving economic growth and road safety improvements in the Eastern Cape.
The day began with a visit to SANRAL’s Technical Excellence Academy and Freeway Management System (FMS) Facility.
The FMS is a groundbreaking project and the first of its kind in the province.
It enables SANRAL to monitor road conditions in real time, respond promptly to incidents, and provide live updates to motorists, enhancing road safety.
“Zone 1 will be fully operational by June or July this year, and all incident management data will be fed directly to the Traffic Management Centre for immediate action,” explained one of SANRAL’s engineers.
SANRAL’s engineers told the minister all incident management data will be fed directly to the Traffic Management Centre for immediate action.
The delegation continued their site visit to the R335 national road between Motherwell and Addo, an area benefiting from SANRAL’s current construction projects, which include road infrastructure improvements that consider the needs of the surrounding agricultural communities.
Reflecting on SANRAL’s work in the province, Creecy highlighted the dual economic and community value of these developments.
“The investment being made into the Eastern Cape is significant,” she said. “Not only are we helping to boost the econo -

With the FMS project nearing operational status and continued investments in infrastructure, Creecy outlined her optimism for the area’s future.
"This is about long-term impact—safer roads, stronger communities, and a thriving economy."
The Sundays River Valley Municipality’s Roads and Stormwater teams in Nqweba have recently started a project to fill potholes as well as clear stormwater drains in the area, in their efforts to improve service delivery. At a public participation programme held on Monday, April 14, at Moses Mabhida Multi-Purpose Centre in Nqweba, Sundays River Valley Municipality (SRVM) Mayor Solethu Lucas said that the municipality currently does not have a suitable budget for the number of people living in the SRVM. ‘The population of the area recorded by Stats SA was 60,000 between April and September 2024. However, in 6 months, the population grew by approximately 25,000, but the SRVM is determined to improve service delivery in the area.’ This was stated in the presence of the Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation, Pemmy Majodina. MACETHANDILE Max Kulati,
a determined bodybuilder from the informal settlement of Tambo Village, Kwa-Langa in Kariega, is preparing to make history by competing at the prestigious international bodybuilding competitions in Russia and the United Kingdom in 2025.
Representing not just South Africa but the entire African continent, Kulati hopes to inspire others while conquering new heights in his sport.
"I want to break records and be the first wheelchair professional bodybuilder to compete in Russia while representing Africa. This is more than just a personal achievement; it’s about breaking barriers and showing the potential of African talent on a global stage,” Kulati said.
A former Eastern Cape powerlifter, Kulati credits his journey in bodybuilding to a friend who spotted his potential at a local gym in Kariega. He recalled how that pivotal moment changed his life.
“My friend told me I could achieve more in bodybuilding if I gave it a try. I trusted his advice, and I fell in love with the sport. Even though dieting and financial constraints have been some of my biggest challenges, I’ve never looked back.”
Bodybuilding, Kulati explains, is more than just lifting weights. “Nutrition, supplements, time, discipline, hard work, and dedication are all key to the sport. Nutrition is especially critical - what you eat off-season impacts your perfor-
mance when you’re on-season,” he emphasised.
He added that supplements help with muscle recovery and filling nutritional gaps, while time management is essential to sticking to strict training and meal schedules. Discipline is another cornerstone of his success.
“Whether on stage or off stage, I always strive to be a role model, especially for young, up-and-coming athletes. Hard work is non-negotiable in this sport. Everything you earn comes from putting in the effort,” he said.
Despite his determination, Kulati’s road to success has not been without challenges. Preparing for competitions requires significant financial resources for travel, accommodation, nutrition, and supplements. Kulati is reaching out for sponsorship, hoping it will enable him to compete without the constant stress of funding his journey.
“Representing my country is one of the biggest blessings I’ve received from God. Many athletes dream of representing South Africa but are held back by financial constraints. It’s heartbreaking to see potential go unrealised due to a lack of support,” he said.
Kulati called on government officials and organisations to provide greater assistance to athletes like him who are striving to represent South Africa on the international stage.
“It’s disheartening that so many of us struggle to secure funds, yet when we achieve glory, the celebration is widespread. I urge the people in power to step forward
and support athletes who make this country proud.”
His upcoming journey will take him to Russia on July 26 this year, followed by Coventry in the UK on October 26.
The combined cost of the trips includes flights, accommodation, and competition fees, which Kulati is working hard to raise through sponsorship.
“I would be delighted to represent brands on my social media platforms, on local and international stages, and in my interviews as a token of my appreciation for their support. It would also be an honour to serve as a brand ambassador.”
Reflecting on his journey so far, Kulati shared, “This journey has taught me that nothing in life comes easy. There have been tough times - people trying to break my spirit or feeling threatened by what I could achieve - but I’ve learned to hold my head high. There are so many people motivated by our hard work, and that keeps me going.”
Kulati is currently training tirelessly, aiming to showcase his hard work and dedication on the global stage.
“This sport has shown me flames," he laughed, "but it’s also shown me that perseverance and focus can keep your dreams alive.”
With enough backing, Kulati said he can achieve greatness, not just as an athlete but as an African ambassador in the world of professional bodybuilding.

Registration for the VW Health Care Run is open until May 5, and can be completed online through www.webtickets.co.za

KAIZEN Karate Academy recently participated in the World Union of Karate Federations (WUKF) Afro Asian Open, held at The Boardwalk in Gqeberha.
This prestigious event, currently the biggest karate competition on the African continent, brought top martial artists from across the region.
It was the first competition for most of their kids, but they performed admirably.
Most of the participants from the academy advanced past the preliminary rounds and competed in the finals.
A standout moment came from the youngest competitor, Lukah Maziena (5), who competed in the girls' u/7 Kata category. With confidence beyond her years, she clinched
a bronze medal; a proud moment for her, coaches, and the entire academy.
The Kaizen Karate Academy continues to inspire and develop young talent, and their success at the WUKF Afro Asian Open is just the beginning of many great things to come. Anyone interested in joining Kaizen Karate Academy can contact Sensei Gillmore at 063 357 2589.
Bambi Swim School hosted their second swimming gala this past weekend. Owner, Cathy Curtain said, ‘The aim of the gala was to show off our swimmers swimming skills and the progress to their parents and peers. We were blessed with fantastic weather on the day and the event was a huge success.’ The highlight of the day was the children’s races against their coaches, and while the coaches won the relay, the learners gave spectators a good challenge. ‘Bambi swim team is extremely grateful to the parents entrusting their children’s swimming development to our coaches. Additional thanks to Convent Primary School for allowing us to make use of their awesome venue,’ Curtain said.
