Four fighters from Strydom’s Kickboxing Academy in Despatch recently excelled at the 2025 Battle of the Karoo in Oudtshoorn, securing a total of 10 medals: 1 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze. The team showcased exceptional skill, determination, and fighting spirit. The event doubled as part two of the Eastern Cape Kickboxing Provincial Trials, crucial in selecting the team for the South African National Championships in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, this April. All four fighters were chosen to represent the Eastern Cape at Nationals, earning full Provincial Colours. Hillwagt Tip conditions continue to worsen

RESIDENTS of Ward 51 have expressed growing frustration over the worsening conditions at the Hillwagt Tip, citing concerns about pollution, illegal dumping, and poor maintenance.
In response to these complaints, Ward Councillor Roelf Basson recently conducted an oversight visit to the site, joined by Democratic Alliance Caucus Leader Rano Kayser and the party’s Public Health spokesperson for Nelson Mandela Bay, Mthokozisi Nkosi.
Their visit aimed to assess the extent of the problem and explore possible solutions to address the community’s grievances.
Speaking to UD Express, Basson said, “Driving this initiative has been my pet project because it’s a health hazard to my ward. The municipality abandoned the busiest site in Kariega, and the work they have done in cleaning, removing bins, and managing the area has not been sufficient.”
He added that there is not a single municipal official working at the tip, and it is effectively run by the Ward alongside a community member.
“The last time we did not manage the place properly, refuse accumulated towards the gate, prompting residents to close the road leading to the site. To prevent that from happening again, we had to act fast,” Basson said.
He also mentioned that there were promises to build a fence around the tip, but this remains unfulfilled.
Additionally, the land around the tip is occupied by farmers, and fires are occasionally started at the tip, posing a significant threat to commonage users.
“The toxins that come from the fires started here are a health hazard. The fire department frequently comes here to extinguish fires; however, sometimes this cannot be done owing to the gases in the bins. Some people throw in items other than garden refuse, which is the only thing that should be dumped here, and that causes uncontrollable fires,” said Basson.
He also highlighted the litter on the road leading to the site, stat-
ing that residents dump waste indiscriminately, expecting someone else to pick it up. According to him, some residents even throw their refuse next to the bin instead of inside it, allowing the wind to scatter it.
He shared, “A resident argued with one of our workers at the site after being shown where to dump his refuse. The resident then said he did not care and left his refuse wherever he pleased.”
He added that, since there is no gate or sufficient fencing at the site, people come at night to dump things they should not, like building rubble. The site is intended for garden refuse only. This is the only transfer
site open 24/7, whereas the one in Gillespie Street is completely fenced and operates between 09:00 and 17:00, making it cleaner and more efficient.
Kayser added, “The site’s priority should have been that it does not impact the lives and property values of the surrounding residents.
The conditions of this transfer site attract crime and could negatively impact the value of nearby homes.
The reason is that the site remains open and increasingly dirty every day.”
Kayser also mentioned that their objectives include closing the site, ensuring it adheres to minimum
legislative requirements, and maintaining safety and control. If needed, they aim to establish private partnerships to achieve these objectives.
Nkosi discussed the health aspect of the transfer site, “Because this site is close to residents, we don’t know what is being burnt. That uncertainty is dangerous, as the fumes from the fires can negatively affect the neighbouring community.”
“It is important to note that we have pursued this issue, but there has been no change in conditions. Fortunately, a community member stepped up to assist with managing the transfer site. This site is supposed to have at least six employees, yet none are present,” Nkosi added. In response, the Municipal spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, said, “The fencing work for the Drop Off site is budgeted for in the 2025/26 financial year. Although our Fire and Emergency sub-directorate responds whenever there is a fire or any illegal activity, while we wait for funds in the next financial year, we continue to engage with our Safety and Security Directorate to deploy officers to monitor the situation.”
He added that they have also approached SAPS for assistance and are conducting awareness programmes for those salvaging items from the site to inform them of the dangers of their actions.
“We are also exploring legal avenues available to us. Town Rangers are conducting regular patrols at the site. The Municipality is also increasing personnel at the site through the Extended Public Works programme,” Soyaya concluded.

Kariega students call for shuttle reinstatement

NELSON Mandela University (NMU) has cancelled its shuttle service for students residing in Kariega, leaving many in a state of frustration and uncertainty.
For years, the shuttle had been a vital transport option, particularly for NSFAS-funded students who depended on it to get to campus on time. However, students were allegedly blindsided by the decision, which was made without prior communication, according to them.
This has now forced them to rely on costly public transport, adding financial strain and making it even harder for them to attend their classes.
Despite efforts to reach out for clarification, including an official petition with 246 signatures, students have yet to receive a satisfactory response, as the university pushes them to find other alternatives.
Many students are finding it difficult to commute to campus, leading to frustration and concerns about their academic commitments.
An NMU student, Lilitha Mali, said, “We were sent emails from the schools to book our trips to campus since the implementation of shuttle cards. When we tried applying, we realised that the Kariega shuttle route was
missing. We emailed the NMU representative overseeing shuttle services, but to no avail.”
When classes resumed for NMU students, they found themselves needing to find their own transport to campus. Amidst this confusion, some students were left waiting for a shuttle that did not arrive.
Nomampehle Stemele organised a petition for students to fill out regarding this issue but said that the response received was not helpful.
“The response was that they would communicate with the service provider and get back to us,” Mali said.
Stemele added, “Earlier this year, we heard from a student that shuttles to Kariega had been discontinued. When we tried to ask about this, we were told it was because the off-campus accredited residences in Kariega were closed.” She further stated that students were advised to pay for their own shuttle service, being quoted R1,100 per return trip for a 22-seater vehicle.
“Through the petition, I hoped they would see how the discontinuation of Kariega shuttles is affecting us students. So far, there’s no success whatsoever,” Stemele added.
According to Mali, there were previously about four or five 22-seater buses in the morning for NMU students from Kariega to transport them to school, which was already insuf-
ficient.
“The university then told us the reason for cancelling the shuttle service was that there is no residence in Kariega and that students do not pay for transport. Instead, NSFAS-funded students receive about R700 as a transport allowance monthly, paid directly to the school, which in turn pays for our transport,” Mali explained.
Mali added that the reason Kariega-residing students funded by NSFAS are not allowed to apply for residential living on campus is owing to their proximity to the university, unlike students from outside Nelson Mandela Bay.
Students from outside the NMB metro area are prioritised for on-campus living. Students argue that the original purpose of the shuttle service was to assist those who could not afford to commute and ensure their timely arrival for classes.
This arrangement has been disrupted by the termination of shuttle services.
Additionally, Mali was given a quote for the shuttle service at R1 000 a month, which the R700 transport allowance from NSFAS does not cover.
She added, “The reason students are turned back is that they did not register for the shuttle service or receive the shuttle card.”
According to NMU’s Student Representative Council president, Lathitha Mbuzwana, the
SRC was unaware of this cancellation beforehand. He added that the SRC has been in constant communication with the university management to have them reinstate the service.
“The management has no interest in resolving this because they believe these students should not be getting a shuttle service, even after a decade of it being in place. It does not make sense that the university expects its students to pay for transport, especially for those residing in places like KwaNobuhle,” Mbuzwana stated.
In response, NMU spokesperson, Zandile Mbabela, said, “Nelson Mandela University’s transport model covers inter-campus travel for all registered students (funded from the general levy), and students who stay in accredited off-campus accommodation (funded by the transport levy collected from the NSFAS allocation). This is in a bid to ensure reliable transportation for students.”
She added that the off-campus arrangement was entered into with the university/NSFAS-accredited off-campus residences, which pay a levy for each transport user residing there as a condition for accreditation.
“There has been no change in policy or transport model, but the university has improved controls and systems to ensure that the shuttle service is used by its intended recipients,” Mbabela concluded.
Local academy empowers through community outreach

THE NexGen Training Academy, led by the very passionate Adrian Wagener, recently concluded a highly successful community outreach programme focused on educating and raising awareness about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), and HIV/AIDS.
This initiative marks a significant step in the academy’s mission to bridge healthcare gaps in rural areas by empowering key populations, including young mothers, elderly mothers, and sex workers. Held at the informal settlement of Moeggesukkel, and another in central Kariega, the programme was conducted in collaboration with local stakeholders, and utilised a local church
as a venue.
Participants received comprehensive support, including healthy meals and dignity boxes filled with essential items like toiletries, condoms, and educational pamphlets. The aim was to empower these communities by providing essential resources and information.
In a previous article by the UD Express, it was highlighted that NexGen Training Academy plays a crucial role in deploying trained community health workers to understaffed clinics in Kariega, serving over 800 people daily.
“This outreach is a testament to our ongoing commitment to healthcare access and education,” Wagener said.
The success of this initiative can be attributed to NexGen’s strong partnerships and collaborations. The operational management team from local clinics in Kariega and surrounding areas, enthusiastic students, dedicated kitchen staff, and coordinators, all played vital roles. A local community leader, Angelona Williams, was recognised for her unwavering support, demonstrating the spirit of community engagement that drives the academy’s mission. “Our volunteers worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure everything ran smoothly,” Wagener proudly noted.
Reflecting on the programme’s achievements, Wagener expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the community’s engagement.
“We believe that this initiative has not only educated our target populations, but has also built a stronger sense of community,” he stated. “Remember, you are stronger than you think, and your future holds immense promise,” he added, addressing the participants.
Adrian Wagener, the founder of NexGen Training Academy, is renowned for his commitment to community welfare. His diverse qualifications in marketing, healthcare, and counselling, combined with his engaging personality, make him a formidable force for positive change. “I’ve worked in the health field as a nursing assistant for many years,” he previously explained to the UD Express Under Wagener’s leadership, the academy has been a beacon of hope, providing practical training that empowers community health workers to support local clinics. By delivering essential services such as medication delivery and conducting vital tests, NexGen alleviates the burden on nurses and doctors, allowing for more effective treatment. “Our participants
provide critical structure, enabling us to treat more people effectively,” Wagener explained.
Wagener’s passion for community development extends beyond healthcare. As a motivational speaker and former Youth Against Drug Abuse (YADA) facilitator, he champions the growth and mental well-being of young people. “I want to see more young people developing themselves, despite their circumstances,” he emphasised. At NexGen, the focus is on ensuring that students are mentally healthy to achieve academic excellence. In 2022, as reported by the UD Express, Wagener released his first book, The Life of a Self-made Hard Worker, detailing his inspiring journey. Born in Kariega in 1992 and having faced numerous challenges, including early sexual abuse, Wagener’s story is one of resilience and hope. His message of forgiveness and inner strength resonates deeply with his community work. “The greatest characters and strongest persons are those allowing themselves to mourn and to feel. To forgive is to stop blaming. The weak cannot forgive; forgiveness is the attribute of strong people,” Wagener concluded with a powerful message.
NexGen Training Academy’s recent outreach programme aligns with Wagener’s broader vision to extend support throughout the Eastern Cape.
“The plan is to reach every community,” he shared. “Where there are people, there is work to be done. I have no doubt this collaborative work will yield fruitful results in the long run, but we, especially the youth, need to work hard.”
By partnering with organisations such as Citizen Connect and the Sakhe Family Care Development Centre, NexGen continues to deliver impactful healthcare solutions and training. Wagener’s belief in the power of collaboration and hard work remains unchanged.
“I’ve worked in various professional capacities, and I am well-known for my flamboyant personality, punctuality, and a positive perspective on life,” he said proudly.

“Daar is 40 wedstryde wat gereel is vir die jaar en dus gaan dit ’n baie lang seisoen wees,” sê hy. Grobler sê die span het tot dusver vyf wedstryde gespeel waarvan hy drie gewen het. Een wedstryd is verloor terwyl die
ander een gelykop geëindig het. Hy sê Frans Conradie het ’n ligte span, maar hulle het leeuharte. Die ligste speler weeg maar 26kg (Renaldo Davidson), terwyl Jaydon Coetzee die swaarste speller is en die skaal op 101kg laat kreun. Volgens Grobler is die span goed gebalanseerd met ’n hele paar spelers wat reeds hand op gesteek het vir groot dinge die jaar.
Hulle is Eckhard Wepener (agtsteman), Aiken van der Berg (skrumskakel), Ethain Laubscher (binnesenter), Riaan Bouwer (buitesenter) en Dylan Bester (flank). Bester het die OP verlede jaar verteenwoordig. “Soos die seisoen vorder sal daar nog baie ontwikkeling plaasvind,” sê Grobler, wat een van die afrigters is.
Hy sê 11 van die 20 speel vanjaar vir die eerste keer vir die o.13A-span en is dus juniors wat hul man sal moet staan teen die hardebaarde.
