THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Constituency Services Special Programmes Unit recently held an important cluster meeting at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall in KwaNobuhle.
The gathering marked an important step toward strengthening community engagement by establishing structure forums across different sectors of society.
The initiative is aimed at creating localised support systems that represent diverse community groups, including women, men, youth, people with disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community. Within the new forums, each sector appointed leaders for seven key positions: Chairperson, Deputy-Chairperson, Secretary, Deputy-Secretary, Organiser, Treasurer, and Public Relations Officer (PRO).
tor-specific portfolio heads, the forums are designed to provide every group in the community with a voice and a means of channelling their concerns through official structures. “This initiative ensures that residents are not left without direction when faced with challenges,” added Soyaya. “If someone needs help within their cluster, they now have a dedicated framework to turn to. It also bridges the gap between the municipality and community members, ensuring residents experience improved communication and service delivery.”
The creation of such forums is expected to support the effectiveness of wardbased planning, opening up dialogue between different sectors within the wards. Localised representation means that issues unique to each demographic can be addressed with greater precision and care since portfolio heads will relay these concerns directly to the municipality.
In addition to creating a platform for engagement, the forums also aim to ensure inclusivity and equal representation. By covering a wide array of groups, from youth to LGBTQ+ communities, the municipality is seeking to create spaces where every voice is heard and every issue addressed.
Municipal spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, emphasised the importance of this initiative in fostering stronger connections between the municipality and residents. “The purpose of these forums is to create a platform where people can engage directly with representatives closer to them,” Soyaya explained. “It decentralises communication and enables residents to address challenges effectively within their own communities.”
The cluster meeting particularly focused on establishing comprehensive forums that resonate with the needs of local residents. By appointing sec-
“When community members feel that they are part of the process, we can collectively improve service delivery,” said Soyaya. “Each voice in these forums adds to the larger effort of making Nelson Mandela Bay a municipality that truly serves its people," he concluded.
FOR one tight-knit family, the discovery of heart-shaped treasures has become a tender and meaningful tradition, passed down between siblings over the years.
It began in 2018 when 5-year-old at the time, Micah Theron, full of wonder, uncovered a heartshaped potato while helping her granny in the kitchen.
Now, years later, her younger cousin, Liam Nel has followed in her footsteps - this time with a heart-shaped grape.
When Micah originally found the potato, her delight was boundless.
“Oh, what a beautiful potato!” she exclaimed with the innocence and enthusiasm only a child can bring.
Her mother, Lagenay Theron, recalled how Micah refused to let the potato be cooked. “She was amazed when she saw it,” Lagenay told the UD Express seven years ago.
"She wanted to plant it and grow many more beautiful heartshaped potatoes. She even kept it with her and proudly showed it off at school."
At the time, Micah was a Grade R pupil at Uitenhage Primary School. Her excitement about the discovery left a lasting impression on her family as a sweet and playful moment.
Fast forward to the present. Recently, Micah's 10-year-old younger cousin, Liam, came running to his mother, Nerissa Nel, with equal joy after finding his own heart-shaped treasure in the form of a grape.
“Mummy, look!” he exclaimed, nearly bursting with excitement. “I found a heart-shaped grape just like Micah did when she was younger.”
But it was Liam’s next act that truly highlighted the family’s strong values of love and kindness: he handed the grape to his mother and insisted, “You take the first bite, Mummy, because I love you so much.”
Nel, deeply moved, shared how this small yet meaningful gesture reaffirmed the values she strives to instil in her children.
"In that moment, I knew I must have been doing something right to raise such a well-mannered,

gentle giant. Liam’s thoughtfulness filled me with gratitude for the gift of being a parent," she said.
The family cherishes these small, heartfelt experiences, seeing them as reminders of the simple joys of life and the importance of nurturing love and kindness in their day-to-day interactions. Commenting on Liam’s discovery, his proud mother remarked, “How lucky we are indeed to be given the gift of being called their parents.”
For Micah and Liam, these
heart-shaped finds have exceeded their physical form, symbolising the love, connection, and values their family holds dear.

THE highly anticipated career fair in Kariega is set to empower students and young people by providing practical advice, personalised guidance, and handson support to navigate crucial decisions about their future studies and career paths.
The event, spearheaded by organiser, Andisiwe Dyonase, aims to bridge the knowledge gap and inspire informed choices among its attendees.
“The primary aim of the career fair is to educate high school students and other interested members of the community about different career fields, and what they entail,” said Dyonase.
She emphasised that participants will gain an understanding of the subjects required for university admission, the qualifications to pursue, and what to expect in a chosen profession’s daily work life.
The target audience includes high school learners from Grades 9 to 12, unemployed youth who did not enrol in higher education, and individuals uncertain about their career direction.
“I want to collapse barriers to education by providing guidance and assistance in accessing institutions of higher learning and education,” added Dyonase. “This is about creating a community where everyone has the resources and knowledge to achieve financial stability, regardless of their location or eco-
nomic background.”
The career fair will feature representatives from eight major fields, including Business and Economics, Health Sciences, Science, Law, Humanities, Education, Engineering, The Built Environment, and Technology.
These diverse industries will give attendees access to extensive information about available opportunities and pathways to success.
Beyond academic pathways, presenters aim to offer a broader understanding of career realities. Through interactive sessions, they will provide guidance on high school subject selection, explain qualifications necessary for university, and describe the day-to-day challenges and rewards of their professions.
“I had this vision in 2019 when I started my SAICA articles,” Dyonase explained.
“I realised how much I didn’t know about the workforce when I was at university. This event is meant to ensure others are better informed, making decisions that align with their passions and understanding the realities of employment.”
A key benefit of the career fair is the hands-on assistance for higher education applications, with presenters and volunteers assisting each participant to apply to at least two universities.
“Sometimes students lack the infrastructure to make applications or funding for simple things like transport to get their documents certified. At this career fair, we are bridging that
gap,” Dyonase assured.
To ease this process, South African Police Service officers and other commissioners of oaths will be present to certify documents on-site. This initiative ensures that attendees have access to necessary services without added barriers.
Participants will also have the rare opportunity to interact directly with professionals from various industries. These interactions aim to answer career-related questions, provide clarity, and help attendees jump-start their journey toward their chosen fields.
According to Dyonase, “Most career fairs don’t assist with the actual applications or provide insight into what a career entails on a daily basis. That’s what sets us apart.”
Dyonase and her team of organisers are committed to inclusivity. They have already conducted outreach in high schools across Kariega and Despatch, and hope to expand to Gqeberha, and eventually the entire Eastern Cape.
Dyonase envisions a broader scope for this initiative, hoping to attract funders to extend support to include funding opportunities, skills development, and more.
“I hope this becomes an annual event that covers the entire Eastern Cape. I also want the event to attract funders, allowing us to help students even further,” she said.
She further stressed her commitment to ensuring that attend-
ees leave the event equipped with knowledge and clarity about their future.
“I would be so grateful if everyone who attends the event leaves more knowledgeable and with a clearer understanding of where they want to go in terms of their future careers.”
The event also tackles a widespread issue in higher education: the misalignment of students in university courses.
Many students enrol simply for the sake of studying without understanding the demands of
From Micah’s determination to preserve a heart-shaped potato at age five, to Liam’s sweet offering of a grape at age ten, these moments, Nel said, serve as proof of the importance of raising children who recognise and share the love around them. Andisiwe Dyonase aims to bridge the knowledge gap and inspire informed choices among the youth through a career fair.
their chosen field, often leading to struggles in completing their degrees.
Dyonase’s initiative seeks to mitigate this risk, ensuring that participants make informed and fulfilling choices.
The career fair will be held in KwaNobuhle on June 25.

The annual Kirkwood Wildlife Game Auction will continue to be held at the Mayogi Bomas, on Friday, June 27.
"It is great news that we have found premises in Kirkwood to hold the Wildsfees," says festival director Jenni Honsbein.
"We are extremely grateful to The Co-
op, which has its headquarters in Humansdorp, for making their grounds in Kirkwood available for 2025.

swimming team from Mzamomhle Special School in KwaNobuhle recently participated in the South African Sport Association for the Intellectually Impaired (SASAII) swimming nationals held in Gauteng Province, in which they represented the Eastern Cape at the Paterson Park Multipurpose Centre. Their coach, Nomzamo Zimema said, ‘At the swimming nationals, the athletes collected 21 medals for their school in total.’ With five coaches, namely, Mzukisi Fisanti, and three development coaches, namely Kayakazi Makina, Lisakhanya Todolo and Abonga Mahlanyana. Zimema said, ‘It is not easy to develop and train swimmers, and we would appreciate swimming kit donations, like swimming caps, fins, goggles, costumes and towels etc. as our learners are from disadvantaged backgrounds.’ From left are
