KwaNobuhle grieves after drowning tragedy

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

KWANOBUHLE detectives opened an inquest after a heartbreaking incident on Monday, February 3, when two children drowned at a reservoir dam in the KwaNobuhle area.

“At approximately 18:30, local residents heard distressing screams from children near the reservoir at the corner of 10th Avenue and 1st Avenue. Upon arrival, the community discovered three-year-old Iviwe

Zakumba, who was rushed to Laetitia Bam Hospital by his father but was sadly pronounced dead on arrival,” Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg of the South African Police Services (SAPS) said.

“Tragically, seven-year-old Botwelethu Zakumba’s body was later recovered by SAPS divers from a hole filled with water next to the reservoir, where repairs had been previously made. The investigation into this incident is ongoing,” Van Rensburg added.

This recent tragedy echoes a simi-

lar devastating event affecting the Kariega community last November.

On November 19, the bodies of two young boys, aged six and eight, were found in Willow Dam, after they had gone missing from a park in the Tamboville area.

The boys were reported missing a day earlier, and their bodies were discovered by community members who then alerted authorities. An inquest was also launched into this case, as stated by Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg of SAPS.

Local businessman Armand Du

Preez, chairman of the Kariega Emerging Farmers’ Association, shared with UD Expressed profound distress over these incidents at the time. Du Preez had previously invested significant effort and funds into repairing the Rosedale Public Swimming Pool, using water from his private Ebenhaeser Dam during the drought. The pool had been closed again after only three weeks, disappointing local children who sought safe places to swim.

In the wake of these tragic events, new Kariega Ward Councillor Alve-

ra de Vos-Hendricks extended her heartfelt sympathies to the grieving families, saying, “As a community, our hearts break for the parents who have lost their children in such tragic circumstances. We must unite to ensure the safety of our young ones and support each other during this difficult time. These incidents highlight the urgent need for secure recreational facilities and community vigilance to prevent future tragedies. The community mourns and seeks collective healing as investigations continue.”

NMBM launches campaign to address infrastructure challenges

NKOSAZANA NGWADLA

THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe, alongside Members of the Mayoral Committee, inaugurated the Mayoral Blitz Siyasebenza Campaign in Kariega recently. This initiative aims to tackle pressing infrastructure issues across Wards 48, 49, 51, 44, and 52.

Thecampaignprioritisestheresolution of key challenges, including water service failures, stormwater issues, blocked drains, sewer reticulation problems, and potholes. Mayor Lobishe affirmed that new projects will commence in February, promising improvements in living conditions and faster service delivery for residents.

A significant focus during the vis-

it was the ongoing problem of vandalism and theft of infrastructure.

The Mayor urged residents to come together to combat those responsible for damaging and stealing community resources.

As part of the blitz, Councillor Buyelwa Mafaya, Member of the Mayoral Committee for Infrastructure and Engineering, led a municipal team to Ward 44 in KwaNobuhle.

She was joined by Councillor Ziyanda Mqokoyi, MMC for Electricity and Energy, during their inspection of vital infrastructure sites, such as the Matanzima Bridge, Mqolomba Mini Substation, and the main KwaNobuhle Substation on Mabandla Road.

The Matanzima Bridge project hassecuredR50millionfromtheNational Government’s Disaster Recovery Grant, with funds expected

in March 2025, aimed at addressing critical infrastructure challenges. Despite recent rehabilitation efforts, the Mqolomba Mini Substation has faced flooding due to ongoing rainfall, with workers currently draining water to prevent further damage.

Meanwhile, at the main KwaNobuhle Substation on Mabandla Road, burnt cables led to a power outage affecting the entire area. The municipality said teams were diligently developing and implementing strategies to restore power efficiently.

Municipal spokesperson, SithembisoSoyayasaidinconclusion,“The aftermath of the two floods that hit Kariega the hardest is evidently bad, but the municipality is actively working towards restoring order, so that residents can go back to their normal lives.”

Constitution Road woes continue

SHANTI JAFTA

BUSINESSES and residents in Constitution Road, Kariega, continue to grapple with persistent service delivery failures, ranging from blocked sewage drains and unfilled trenches to non-functioning streetlights and sewage overflow.

Despite repeated complaints allegedly made to the municipality, which they claim date back to 2021, little to no progress has been made in addressing these critical issues, which are not only affecting daily operations but are also posing significant health and safety risks.

Concerns have also been raised regarding the municipality’s capacity to manage these challenges, with reports suggesting a severe shortage of plumbers and essential equipment. Amid conflicting claims about budget allocations and ward councillor resources, local stakeholders are demanding clarity and urgent intervention to restore basic services in the area.

Local property owner, André Oosthuizen, said, “This street has seen better days. I have been a part of this community for approximately 40 years, and it has never looked this bad. It is sad to say, but I won’t see a change in my lifetime.”

The other half of Constitution Road is home to many manufacturers, and Oosthuizen added, “It is tough for us business people. We have water flooding the street often because of the blocked stormwater drains, and as a result, no one would want to bring their car to be fixed here(tothemechanicshops). It stinksandisunhygienic. As property owners, tenants are complaining to me about the smell and how this street looks, saying that they will stop renting here. I would be losing money if that were to happen.

“We also cannot sell our properties here because no one will want to buy property in an area like this,” he said.

He added that when you pay rates and taxes, it is expected that the municipality will address complaints like these.

“It is unfair for business owners to have to repair roads, clean up in front of their shops, and pay rates and taxes when service delivery is the way it is. We cannot afford to keep doing

so,” he added.

“I always make this analogy. In 1994, we gave the government a brand-new Mercedes in running condition, but they could not maintain it. They could not spend the money wisely. Comparing the Garden Town from then to what it is now is unbelievable. There is enough money, but the money is not managed correctly,” he added.

Speaking to UD Express, Ward 48 Councillor Franay van der Linde said, “It is sad to see our town going backwards like this. We have made the municipality aware of these issues numerous times, and yet nothing has been done.”

She added that some officials in the municipality want to work with the Councillor in addressing the woes of Kariega residents; however,themunicipality’sbudgetissocash-strapped to the point that they cannot address all the issues of Kariega.

“We have been blaming officials for not doing their work when we know that it is not all their fault. Although the community looks at us as councillors, we are dependent on officials to assist us in getting things done,” Van der Linde said.

She added that it is concerning and unacceptable that only two plumbers working for the municipality are tasked with addressing the huge volume of water issues in the whole Kariega, KwaNobuhle and Despatch area.

In response to these claims, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s spokesperson, Sithembiso Soyaya, said, “The issue of blocked sewerage drains in Constitution Road has been noted. Our records indicate that while some maintenance has been conducted in the area, persistentblockagesmaybeduetoillegaldumpingand ageing infrastructure.”

Headdedthatthemunicipalityisawareofthe urgency of dealing with sewage overflows and how it impacts residents and business owners. The municipality will be dispatching teams to assess the situation and ensure that immediate interventions such as clearing blocked drains will be done.

“The holes in Constitution Road were dug as part of the planned infrastructure upgrades; however, unforeseen delays in contractor schedules and budget constraints have affected the refilling process,” said Soyaya.

Regarding the municipal plumbing capacity, “The municipality employs a limited number of plumbers for the Kariega area. While we acknowledge the challenges posed by workforce constraints, efforts are being made to increase capacity through better operational planning and outsourcing where necessary.”

He added that the municipality is aware of the non-functional streetlights in Constitution Road and stated that they are working on improving service efficiency through equipment procurement and better logistical planning.

Soyaya further explained that after the municipal budget for the new financial year was finalised on January 31, specific allocations for service delivery in Kariega and around the entire Metro, including streetlight repairs, are currently being processed.

Inclosing, hesaid,“Acomprehensiveservice delivery plan is being developed to address these recurring issues.”

SANRAL to create jobs with R189 million Road Project

AN exciting development for the Sundays River Valley Municipality (SRVM) was introduced when officials from the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) recently paid a visit with a contractor in Valencia, Addo, marking the commencement of a significant road rehabilitation project.

This initiative, valued at R189 million, aims to revitalise the R342 route from Nguni River Lodge to Paterson, providing a safer and more efficient transport corridor for the region.

Scheduled to begin on May 1, 2025, and con-

clude in April 2026, the project is set to create substantial employment opportunities for local residents, with 30% of the project cost dedicated to workforce inclusion. Additionally, small, macro, and medium enterprises (SMMEs) in the area are set to benefit, further stimulating the local economy.

Zusiphe Jaji, the municipal spokesperson, expressed the municipality’s enthusiasm, saying, “We are thrilled that our community will not only benefit from a safer road but also have the opportunity to be actively involved in its development. This project offers a chance for our residents to improve their livelihoods and support their families.”

Natuurlik sal ek ander probeer motiveer.

“Dis vir my ’n groot eer dat ek gevra word om ander atlete te help en my kennis met hulle te deel. Dis iets waarna ek beslis uitsien,” sê hy. Kulati (36) word ál meer gewild in sy gemeenskap. Hy het onlangs ook ’n motiveringspraatjie vir gr. 12-leerlinge by die Hoërskool Strelitzia gelewer en doen al meer gereeld toesprake vir veral matrikulante, sosiale geleenthede en by kerke.

EMSS students achieve outstanding results

THE Engen Maths and Science Schools (EMSS) 2024 matric class celebrated remarkable success atanawardsceremonyheldattheKariegaTown Hall on Saturday, February 1.

The EMSS programme, which offers additional tuition in critical subjects such as Mathematics, English, and Physical Science to grades 1012, continues to empower learners to achieve academic excellence and pursue opportunities in STEM fields.

Among the year’s top achievers is Inam Tonono, who achieved five distinctions, including an impressive 84% in Mathematics. Her outstanding performance has earned her a place to study Actuarial Science at the University of the Free State. Another standout, Lesedi Lucas, achieved 85% in English, 79% in Mathematics, and 80% in Physical Science.

The EMSS programme, now in its 35th year,

provides free supplementary education annually to 1 500 learners at 10 centres across South Africa, focusing on underserved communities.

Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, said, “Engen is immensely proud of all our matriculants, especially our top achievers who embody resilience and hard work. Their success highlightshowqualityeducationcantransform lives and help address South Africa’s critical skills shortage.”

Born and raised in Ngqolowa, Inam Tonono’s path to academic success is an example of perseverance and commitment. Her academic journey was greatly enhanced by her participation in the EMSS programme at the Nelson Mandela Bay Science and Technology Centre in Kariega, which provided invaluable support in Mathematics and Physical Science.

Sedertdien is ek in ’n rolstoel,” sê Kulati.

Library gives Amanzi School a boost

Last year, during one of their outreach programmes to local schools, staff from the Uitenhage Public Library and Allanridge Library were made aware of the needs of the learners. Bongiwe Mavaleliso, librarian at Allanridge Library, decided to launch a small project to address one of the needs by asking for donations of sanitary products which are then donated to various schools in the area. One such donation was made to Amanzi Primary School, located on a farm in Kariega, on Thursday, January 30. Pictured are librarian Bongiwe Mavaleliso and Tsepiso Matshaka (teacher’s assistant) showing the learners the gifts they are about to receive. Nandipha Kolisile of Nal’bali attended as well. “As the library, we felt obliged to make a change in the children’s future, especially impoverished learners. Some learners need a lot like school shoes, socks and sanitary towels. We believe that the small gesture we displayed to Amanzi School learners will be engraved in their hearts and will carry them through their school life and beyond,” said senior librarian Nompumelelo Ngcoko.

“Ek hoop so. Ons is besig daarmee.

“Ons het ’n jong senter, Tian de Klerk, wat groot belofte toon.

“Hy is nes Danie gebou en hardloop ook nes Danie. Ons sien uit na sy ontwikkeling

vorentoe.”

De Klerk is soos legendes Gerber en Rassie Erasmus, ’n oud-leerling van die Hoërskool Despatch.

Hy gee tans onderwys by die laerskool Su-

sannah Fourie.

“My tyd by Despatch in 1994 en 1995 was die beste jare van my lewe.

“As ek die verjaardagvieringe kon bywoon so ons so baie staaltjies kon gedeel het,” sê Karele.
