Founder of Thárros, Taise Sampson, said that in November 2023 she attended a workshop hosted by the Department of Social Development.
At the workshop, they focused on teenage pregnancy and the challenges it presents to the wellbeing of youth and their families.
Sampson said the department’s report revealed that the Sarah Baartman District has some of the youngest teenage mothers in the Eastern Cape.
“As an organisation that works directly with children, youth, and families, we recognised the importance of supporting teens in our immediate area and providing preventative programmes at schools and clinics,” said Sampson.
She said that youth face incredible pressure from peers, parents, educators, and, increasingly, social media. Sampson said that the need for supportive adults who can provide safe spaces for teens to engage, explore, and feel connected is vital.
As an organisation, she said they initiated “Teen Zone” at Han-
KOUGA Local Municipality is facing a serious and escalating crisis due to the ongoing vandalism and theft of municipal infrastructure.
In the past month alone, electrical cables at the Humansdorp Fire Station have been stolen five times, plunging the station into darkness for hours at a time and severely impacting emergency response services.
“This deliberate sabotage threatens the safety and wellbeing of the community and cannot be tolerated,” said Kouga Executive Deputy Mayor and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Electro and Mechanical Services, Timothy Jantjes.
“We cannot allow criminals to continue crippling essential services and putting our residents at risk. Theft and vandalism of municipal infrastructure directly impact service delivery and hurt the entire community.

With assistance from the school, she said that they offer Grades 8 and 9 learners a space and platform to share their experiences.
The social worker at Thárros, Zandile Mengu, said that the teenage pregnancy programme initially started in 2024, and in 2025 they officially changed the name to “Teen Zone”. She said that the programme, which takes place every Wednesday from 09:00 to 12:00, acknowledges that teenage life encompasses more than just pregnancy but also relationships, education, and personal growth.
“The Teen Zone initiative is a comprehensive programme designed to educate, support, and empower teenagers to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and relation-
ships,” said Mengu.
The initiative entails several components:
. Safe space - a private and confidential environment where teenagers feel comfortable discussing sensitive topics
. Education and awarenesscomprehensive sex education, reproductive health, and promoting healthy relationships
. Support and resources - linking teenagers with the local healthcare facility
. Life skills and support - goal setting and planning, and counselling sessions for teenagers dealing with emotional and psychological challenges
Sampson said that despite offering the programme to the learners
at Hankey Senior, they only reach a small portion of teenagers who need assistance.
With more hands, ideas, and resources, she believes that they can achieve so much more.
Sampson said that they would love to introduce guest speakers and therefore request those who are professionally equipped to address various topics to join their programme. She said that they would also appreciate any donations or financial assistance from individuals or businesses.
“A community strengthens when all sectors collaborate, invest, and partner. We urge people to consider our youth and their future by joining hands with us,” said Sampson.

“This is not just a municipal issue – it is a community issue, and we all have a role to play in stopping it.”
To combat this criminal destruction, the municipality is offering a reward of R10 000 for information leading to the successful arrest and prosecution of those responsible for vandalising municipal infrastructure.
“We urge residents to come forward with any information that can help bring these offenders to justice,” said Jantjes.
Residents who have witnessed suspicious activities or possess any information regarding infrastructure damage are urged to contact Senior Law Enforcement Officials, Johnny Hayward at 081 322 7399, and Adam Floors at 081 215 8713.

WOODLANDS Dairy and First Choice, leaders in sustainability, have donated R50 000 worth of desks and chairs to Makukhanye Primary School in Jeffreys Bay.
Made from recycled Tetra Pak cartons, this initiative forms part of their Taste the Truth campaign, reinforcing their commitment to environmental responsibility and community support.
Through Taste the Truth, Woodlands Dairy promotes transparency in dairy farming, educating consumers about responsible farming practices, animal wel-
fare, and sustainability.
By empowering consumers to make informed choices, the campaign underscores the company’s dedication to ethical and sustainable dairy production.
Mandla Charlie, Assistant Brand Manager at Woodlands Dairy and First Choice, highlighted the company’s focus on child welfare.
“We’ve actively supported young learners by donating school shoes, rain jackets, stationery, backpacks, and desks and chairs — ensuring they have the

STORMS River Village was paid a surprise visit by the Solar Butterfly, the world’s largest solar-powered vehicle, which is on a four-year educational journey around the world – much to the delight of residents.
The butterfly made a pit stop on its Climate Pioneer World Tour 2022-2025 for a quick charge in the parking area of Taste Bistro in the village on February 14.
A post on the village chat group quickly brought residents around.
The Solar Butterfly comprises a 3-ton trailer with a small kitchen and bathroom, sleeping space, and areas for solar batteries and solar panels - towed by a Tesla Model X 100 electric vehicle.
The trailer has solar panels that open like wings to recharge when stationary.
In addition, it carries about 20 huge solar panels, which were set out in the parking area to recharge for about two hours.
The Tesla can do about 400km with the trailer when fully charged.
They also make use of EV charging points when available.
So far, the butterfly has visited Europe, England, The Everglades, The Grand Canyon, Mexico, Istanbul, and India, to name just a few.
The aim is to search for and share solutions for climate change with the message, “Transformation from fossil fuels to clean renewable energies and other technologies is possible.”
The team members for the South African leg of the tour are Martin Baumeler, Walter Koeppel, and Job Meinders.
They started from Cape Town at the beginning of February and planned stops at Jeffreys Bay and Gqeberha after leaving Storms River.
They are currently on their way to Bloemfontein.
They will be in Johannesburg towards month-end, then spend a week in the Kru-
ger National Park before heading for Durban, the last stop of the South African trip.
The tour started in May 2022 at the United Nations in Geneva and aims to travel through six continents and visit 90 countries until December 2025.
The goal is to reach the United Nations Climate Change Conference in South America in 2025, for the 10th anniversary of the UN Paris Climate Change Agreement.

EVEN though they began assisting animals in Patensie just seven months ago, the newly established Patensie Animal Care Team (P.A.C.T) is ready to expand its services to Hankey.
Mogi Smit mentioned that she co-founded P.A.C.T with Sus Nel in July 2024 after recognising the need for assistance in the local township.
This realisation came while they were helping SPCA Assisi Humansdorp during an animal dip day hosted in Cyril Ramaphosa Village, Patensie.
Smit said they then began visiting the village at least twice a week to distribute food, deworm, and offer tick and flea medication. They also used the opportunity to educate the youth about taking care of their animals.
“We ensure that the dogs have access to fresh and clean water and advise the owners that keeping a dog on a chain is unnecessary and very unfair to the animal. We try to replace homemade chains and painful collars with softer leads and collars,” said Smit.
Patensie Animal Care Team (P.A.C.T) has donated at least 29 kennels, among other items, to animals in need.
She said that they offer mobile dip days when they drive from street to street to dip and powder dogs from the back of their bakkie.
Smit mentioned that their most successful dip drive was when they managed to dip 78 dogs in a single morning.
Although they initially started with just herself and Nel in assisting the community, they are gradually expanding and currently have two local boys helping them.
“Through this initiative, the two young chaps helping us can educate their friends and family too,” said Smit.
“We firmly believe in involving the youth and by continued commitment to our cause we strive to make the Patensie area and surrounds a better place for all our four-legged babies.”
She said that they focus heavily on sterilising dogs and cats to stop unnecessary breeding.
Thus far, they have successfully sterilised 59 dogs and eight cats.
Smit said that they were thankful for the assistance they have received from Spay It Forward, SPCA Assisi Humansdorp, and J.Bay Animal Rescue Sanctuary, who have sponsored and hosted their animal sterilisations.
“Without all the veterinarians and staff involved, we would not be able to do what we do. Sterilisation is key, and the answer to preventing unnecessary litters,” said Smit.
She said that they have donated at least 29 kennels and blankets to dogs and cats in need and distribute between 60kg and 80kg of pellets a week.
“We believe that no animal should go cold, hungry, or thirsty. If humanity prevails, we can make a massive difference,” said Smit.
“Some mornings we are up at the crack of dawn, feeding, watering, and laying down beds, and as tough as some days are, we carry on doing what we do. We often come home with an empty bakkie but happy hearts, always hoping for another sponsorship of food, money, or assistance.”
She said that they recently branched out to offer their services to surrounding farms, which has provided them with the opportunity to educate people staying on local farms about the importance of sterilising dogs and cats.
Smit said that many of the people staying on the farms are destitute and, while their love for their “four-legged children” prevails, finances do not always allow them to

DESPITE facing financial setbacks that have hindered him from offering golf training to underprivileged youth in Kouga, Kowie Loots, a former professional golfer from Jeffreys Bay and founder of the Kowie Loots Golf Academy, is determined to get the academy up and running again.
After recovering from a freak accident in 2009 that broke his neck and left him paralysed on the left side, Loots did not give up on his passion for golf, a sport he has played professionally for many years.
With his right hand, he continued to perfect his skills, admitting that the adjustment was a challenge at first.
“I now play golf with my right hand, but it was a big adjustment for me to learn how to play with only one hand,” said Loots.
With many years of experience offering golf training to others, he wanted to make a difference in his community and uplift underprivileged youth.
Three years ago, he established the Kowie Loots Golf Academy as a non-profit organisation and began offering golf training to at least 20 young people.
The training took place behind the Jeffreys Bay Golf Club once a week.
“I wanted to teach people how to play golf and share my skills with young people in the region, specifically the under-
privileged who do not have access to golf training,” said Loots.
Having faced financial difficulties after his accident, he said he knew what it was like to lose money and be without it, which further prompted him to assist those in need.
Unable to ignore the socio-economic challenges faced by the children in his academy, Loots also established a feeding scheme to ensure that each child had a meal to eat at the training sessions.
“Many underprivileged children do not have food at home and the feeding scheme greatly assisted in ensuring that they all had a meal before they left to go home,” said Loots.
Unfortunately, he said that bearing the costs for the academy, including the feeding scheme, made it difficult to stay afloat, forcing him to temporarily stop the training sessions.
Loots said that since he halted the training sessions, he has noticed the negative effect the lack of training has had on the young people from his academy.
“The children are desperate to get back to golf training because they love the sport,” said Loots.
To continue his training sessions and feeding scheme, he is appealing to the community to assist with funding.

do what is best for their animals.
She said that they have also managed to rehome beautiful puppies who would have otherwise lived a life of hunger and thirst.
To continue offering assistance to dogs and cats in need, Smit said that they would appreciate donations of food, medication, dipping supplies, kennels, blankets, water, food bowls, brushes and dip baths.
The official launch of P.A.C.T will take place on March 22 at Backyard Pub in Jef-
freys Bay.
The event will start at 11:00 and showcase a live performance by Quintes.
A R20 raffle will also be offered with a massive liquor prize up for grabs.
Smit said that they are requesting guests to bring along dog food, which will be distributed to dogs in need.

Following the withdrawal of some joint venture partners in late 2024, Main Street remains as the sole applicant of the EAApplication and proposes to initially conduct a downscaled and largely non-intrusive survey campaign along the potential production sites and pipeline routes from the deep-water field areas in Block 11B/12B onto the shelf and into the adjacent Block 9 (Block 9 is held by PetroSA) The findings of this surveywillprovideessentialdatathatinformsthedesignandlayoutofthesubseaproductionfacilitiesandassociatedinfrastructure. ON February 15, the newly established JBay Badminton Club, in collaboration with Danie Pieterse, Chairman of the Eastern Province
Badminton Association, hosted a workshop to train individuals interested in becoming badminton coaches.
Mike Noone of the Badminton Confederation Africa travelled from Cape Town to present the Badminton World Federation Shuttle Time training course, train, and evaluate the coaches.
“The younger they start, the sooner they develop the correct muscle memory and good techniques,” Noone stated.
The programme is currently available in English and isiZulu, along with several international languages.
The JBay Badminton Club is particularly enthusiastic about involving the youth and reached out to local primary schools to invite children to attend and teachers to volunteer for coaching training. Councillor Henry (Sakkie) Murray partnered with Pellsrus Primary, resulting in an eager group of children and a teacher, Eliska Schoombee, who arrived bright and early.
The JBay Badminton Club plans to collaborate with community stakeholders to establish, coach, and practise badminton as a regular extra-curricular activity for the community’s children and to grow the club.
For more information about the Badminton club, send an email to fep50@live.co.za.
