Local foundation honoured for transforming communities

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

THE National Council of Provinces (NCOP) has unanimously adopted a motion to congratulate Johan and Astrid Vos, founders of the Victory4All Foundation, for their exceptional commitment to uplifting disadvantaged communities across the Kouga region and Eastern Cape Province.

The honour was bestowed upon the Jeffreys Bay residents when Member of Parliament Henni Britz, also a Jeffreys Bay resident, tabled a motion of congratulations in the NCOP on behalf of the Democratic Alliance.

The motion received unanimous support in terms of section 65 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.

Parliament recognised that since establishing Victory4All in May 2003 after relocating from the Netherlands, the Vos family has created a remarkable network of educational and care facilities.

These include Noah's Ark pre-primary school, King's College, a primary and high school, the Rainbow Centre (the only private school for disabled children in the Eastern Cape), the Rainbow Skills Centre, Rainbow Angels Care Centre, and eight foster homes in Humansdorp and Jeffreys Bay townships. Johan said that they received the honour from Parliament with gratitude and thankful hearts.

"We first didn't even realise it was such a significant achievement. Mr Britz told us it's the first time in history that a foundation like ours has received this recognition. The honour is addressed to us, but everybody will understand it's for our entire team of over 100 staff members," said Johan.

The economic impact of Victory4All is substantial, with approximately R175 million invested in the Kouga region since 2003.

The foundation currently spends up to R2 million monthly on infrastructure mainte-

nance and staff salaries without any government assistance.

Additionally, they are building a new high school in Jeffreys Bay valued at R55 million, set for completion in 2026.

Regarding Victory4All's fundraising approach, Johan said that through prayer and trusting that they will receive help and guidance from their Heavenly Father, they have not found it difficult to raise the necessary funds.

"In 2003, we started with a few family members and friends. Our list of donors grew over the years. We have visited many

Britz presented the official letter of congratulations to Johan at King's College in Jeffreys Bay recently.

"I honour Johan and Astrid Vos for their caring hearts and congratulate them for the exceptional example and high standard they set, not only in the Kouga area but also in the Eastern Cape Province. While the national and provincial economies are strained, and unemployment is at an alltime high in the province, the Victory4All Foundation is a beacon of hope," said Britz. Looking to the future, Johan said that they believe in small schools with small classes of 20 to 25 learners, and as a result, the new high school building will only accommodate approximately 250 learners.

He said that they plan to start a technical school next to the new high school at a later stage.

businesses in South Africa and overseas, organised fundraising events, and kept our donors updated regarding everything we do," said Johan.

When asked which project has had the most profound impact, Johan said that he cannot say as every school, home, or project has a massive impact in the community.

The foundation's social impact is equally impressive, feeding between 300 and 350 children two times a day and employing 105 staff members from the local community, including teachers, assistants, cleaners, carers, chefs, and administrators.

However, they have found that the foster homes are the most challenging.

"Finding the right foster mothers and parents to look after traumatised children is a difficult task for our social workers," said Johan.

For others wishing to make a similar impact, he said that it is a calling and mandate from God.

"We believe nobody can have such an impact without His help and guidance. Besides that, you must understand it's never a one-man show. Make sure you surround yourself with wise people with integrity. Ask advice from others who are a bit further down the road," said Johan.

New Station Commander elected

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

THE National Sea Rescue Institute

(NSRI) Station 21 in St Francis Bay has announced the election of Paul Hurley as its new Station Commander, following a vote taken every three years by the station's volunteer crew.

He succeeds Sara Jane Smith, who had to stand down after serving with distinction in the role for the maximum allowed

nine years.

Smith will remain on the rescue team as an operational coxswain.

Brett Ayres, NSRI Director of Rescue Services, said that Smith's contribution to the station and the broader St Francis Bay community is deeply appreciated by the NSRI.

"Her leadership was evident throughout her tenure, and perhaps most notable during the rescue of 24 fishermen after their vessel ran aground at Shark Point on 6 January 2024. Every single crew member was safely brought ashore thanks to the Sea Rescue crew's excellence and Sara's calm and effective coordination of the rescue," said Ayres.

Hurley is no stranger to leadership roles.

He joined the NSRI 15 years ago.

Hurley previously served as Station Commander from 2014 to 2016, returned as Deputy in 2023, and stepped up once again on 1 June this year.

"Paul brings continuity, experience, and proven leadership," said Ayres.

"He is a qualified Class 2 Coxswain with advanced training in navigation, maritime emergency care, firefighting and swift water rescue. With more than 670 sea hours, over 150 of which were completed during operations, he is well equipped to lead."

Station 21, staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers, plays a vital role in maritime safety along the Kouga coast. From medical evacuations to assisting grounded vessels and aiding people in distress, the team is always on call.

The station also supports local events, marine conservation efforts and the NSRI's Pink Rescue Buoy project, which has saved at least 221 lives nationwide.

"We are deeply grateful to the St Francis community for its continued support of the NSRI," said Ayres.

"We are also grateful to the volunteers at Station 21, who give their time and skill so selflessly. Thank you. Your commitment to saving lives is truly extraordinary." Paul

Street sweep initiative makes waves in Jeffreys Bay

SINCE January 2025, a dynamic street cleaning initiative led by Kouga Local Municipality has been breathing fresh life into the town’s streets and sidewalks.

With brooms in hand and boots on the ground, twelve dedicated workers – hired from within Kouga’s own communities –are on a year-long mission to keep Jeffreys Bay spotless and sparkling.

Local service provider, Infinity Landscaping, is driving the clean-up efforts, having secured the contract to carry out this bold beautification project.

The cleaning initiative covers a range of tasks, including sweeping streets, trimming grass along sidewalks and in designated parks, and clearing bulky waste like tree branches and unwanted furniture.

And the best part? Talks are already underway to roll out this winning formula to other towns across the municipality.

The team of twelve workers is split evenly between Jeffreys Bay’s two central business districts – CBD 1 (De Reyger Street, Schelde Street, Oosterland Street,

Goede Hoop Street, Salamander Street, Drommedaris Street, Woltemade Street, St Croix Street, Duine Road) and CBD 2 (Plane Street, Flame Crescent, Waterkant Street, Da Gama Road, Vriesland Street, Diaz Street, Ferreira Street) – with six residents assigned to each area. To ensure fair opportunities, only one person per household may be employed in each section, and all workers must reside within the municipality.

The municipality keeps the gears turning by supplying refuse bags and herbicide, while Infinity Landscaping ensures that safety never takes a back seat. From protective gear and warning signs to the right tools for every task, this partnership is delivering results where it matters most.

“This initiative not only keeps our streets clean, but also uplifts Kouga’s urban environment, creates job opportunities, and ensures that residents enjoy well-maintained public spaces,” said Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman.

Humansdorp’s Akhumzi selected for international exchange programme

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

AKHUMZI Masoka (17), from Humansdorp, has been selected to participate in the prestigious rugby exchange programme with Hurstpierpoint College in the United Kingdom.

Masoka, who is a learner at Grey High School in Gqeberha, will spend over three months at the renowned UK institution as part of an initiative aimed at fostering international sporting and academic connections.

Two other Grey High School learners selected for the exchange are Joandre van Jaarsveld (17) and Silindezihle Ntshokoma (17), both from Gqeberha.

Robbi Kempson, Head of Rugby at Grey High, expressed his pride in the selection.

"We would like to congratulate Akhumzi on his selection by Grey High School Rugby Club to go on a student exchange to Hurstpierpoint College in the United Kingdom," said Kempson.

He said that the reciprocity has been afforded between the two schools for young learners to engage in each other's programmes, both scholastic and on the sporting front.

The exchange programme, now in its second year, will see Masoka staying at the school's boarding house from August 24 to December 7, under the pastoral care of Fred Pierrepont, Hurstpierpoint's Head of Rugby.

Kempson highlighted the develop-

"Pamperlang" is my gunsteling Afrikaanse woord.

Kempson highlighted the developmental benefits of the programme beyond just rugby skills.

"The impact that this experience can have on his maturity, independence, social skills and cultural awareness is invaluable," said Kempson.

"The opportunity to experience life overseas as a local, rather than a tourist, will give him a more global perspective."

For Masoka, who hails from Humansdorp and is currently based at Grey High's hostel, the selection represents a dream come true.

"I am excited about this new experience," said Masoka.

"I have always dreamt about visiting a different country. This is going to be a totally new experience for me."

The young rugby player is particularly looking forward to the social aspects of the ex-

nities to flourish through the exchange programme," said Kempson.

forward to the social aspects of the exchange.

The exchange programme, despite being in its infancy, has already established a firm bond between the schools and players.

"I am looking forward to making new friends and meeting new people," said Masoka.

The exchange is part of a growing relationship between the two prestigious schools, with three students from Hurstpierpoint College expected to arrive at Grey High School later this month.

Kempson said that tests and exams for the third and fourth terms will be written under supervision at Hurstpierpoint, ensuring that academic progress isn't neglected during the exchange.

"We look forward to building the relationship between the two schools and affording these young men the best possible opportu-

The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, however, comes with significant costs that Masoka needs assistance to cover.

Kempson said that the expenses include international flights ranging from R15 000 to R23 000, a short-term visitor visa costing about R3 000, and passport application fees.

While the parents of the learners from Hurstpierpoint who previously visited South Africa have offered to assist with some costs during their UK stay, Masoka still requires financial support to make this dream a reality.

Guest male voice choirs join local choir to celebrate Father’s Day

CHORAL music lovers in Jeffreys Bay and surrounds can look forward to an afternoon of uplifting and inspiring choral music at Jeffreys Bay Methodist Church on Sunday afternoon, June 15.

SingFonix Male Voice Ensemble from Pretoria and Arbitrio Male Choir from Gqeberha will share the stage with local group, Sound Waves Vocal Ensemble, to express their love of music and choir-singing in particular.

SingFonix is a male voice ensemble that was established at the beginning of 2017. The group's name is derived from the wellknown musical term “symphony”, which refers to a composition for musical instruments. “SingFonix” refers to music of which the sound (“Fonix”) is sung (“Sing”).

SingFonix offers a variety of choir music: sacred music, light classical music, contemporary music and folk music from South Africa and around the world. The musical message is one of love, belief, nostalgia and joy.

SingFonix is under the musical directorship of Dr Riekie van Aswegen, a seasoned and experienced choir leader who has conducted a number of well-known choirs. The members are all involved in their own careers, but there is one common goal shared by the group of men: a calling to offer their God-given voices to the benefit of each listener. In the 2018 World Choir Games, SingFonix won the Open Competition category.

The Arbitrio Male Choir may not need much introduction. This choir was established in 1977 and is currently under the musical direction of Elbe Coetsee. The choir is known for its diverse repertoire, including contemporary, gospel and classical repertoire.

Sound Waves Vocal Ensemble was founded in September 2022 in Jeffreys Bay. Having a deep love of choral music, Rose Graham established the vocal group, drawing on the vocal talents of the local community, including choral enthusiasts from St Francis Bay. This mixed voice choir has performed fre-

quently in Jeffreys Bay, and in its short existence has enjoyed musical collaborations with Hemiola, Cantando and Andante, three well-known choirs in Gqeberha. Most recently, Sound Waves participated in the opening concert of Kunskoors. Their repertoire is diverse, with a focus on sacred music, but also including folksongs and light contemporary music.

The Jeffreys Bay community is invited to come and enjoy this musical celebration on Sunday, June 15, at Jeffreys Bay Methodist Church at 15:30.

A donation of appreciation would be welcomed at the door after the performance.

Dis my passie om Afrikaans so suiwer as moontlik te praat.

Ek is gewoonlik inskiklik as 'n persoon nie kán Afrikaans praat niedan praat ek Engels.
