Mobile veterinarian clinic launched

Eastern Cape’s first mobile veterinarian clinic launched

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

ON February 25, World Spay Day, Spay It Forward, an animal sterilisation campaign, was celebrated at Dune Ridge Country House in St Francis Bay with the launch of the Eastern Cape’s first mobile veterinary clinic.

This will enable well-known veterinarian Doctor Tinashe Chimatira to travel throughout the Kouga region, performing sterilisations of cats and dogs on-site.

Animal lovers, Paulene Hardy and Carmen Stevens, founded Spay It Forward in 2020 with a vision to raise funds to sterilise cats and dogs in Humansdorp after noticing many dogs breeding indiscriminately and constantly searching for food.

“Our vision was to raise enough money to pay for these sterilisations and prevent further breeding, suffering, starvation, homelessness, and neglect,” said Hardy.

She mentioned that in 2020, when the organisation was established, their goal was to fund between eight and ten sterilisations a month.

Now, five years later, Spay It Forward covers vast areas in the Kouga region and funds well over 50 sterilisations a month, with a milestone of 98 sterilisations achieved in January this year. The organisation has grown rapidly, and a team of two has grown to 12 volunteers.

To date, they have funded over 2 200 sterilisations.

To further expand their reach to rural areas throughout the Kouga region, Hardy mentioned that several months ago they began working on a project to launch a mobile clinic. This initiative was spearheaded by one of their team members, Michelle Venter Du Plessis. Hardy said that as work has continued to spread throughout Kouga, it became clear that transporting animals from distant areas was

time-consuming and costly.

She said that the mobile vet would eliminate these obstacles.

Chimatira, respected and well-known in the Kouga region as “Dr Tinashe”, will be visiting rural areas where there is no vet, no money, and no animal rescue organisation.

Hardy said that he would be able to perform about 25 sterilisations in a day.

“The mobile unit will be an asset for people living in isolated areas who have no access to transport for themselves and their animals, or a local vet. The mobile clinic will enable us to do many more sterilisations,” said Hardy.

“We will send him to various townships offering this service for free while my team works behind the scenes raising money.”

Since there are risks involved with travelling to rural areas, Hardy said that at the launch they had a local minister, Reverend Paul Mosdell, say a prayer and bless the mobile clinic.

She further said that while Chimatira travels in the mobile clinic, Spay It Forward will remain available where local people qualifying as welfare cases can obtain help with sterilisations at SPCA Humansdorp, where it all began.

“Bringing the vet to the people in the Kouga district with education, medication, and sterilisations will prevent further breeding, suffering, and neglect,” said Hardy.

“The dedication and continual teamwork from Spay It Forward is changing the lives of many animals far and wide.”

Hardy further said that they were thankful for the assistance they have received from their amazing supporters and sponsors over the last five years.

Kouga Local Municipality launches safety roadshow to educate communities

THE Economic Development and Tourism section of Kouga Local Municipality recently launched a roadshow initiative to educate communities on safety and compliance measures for events.

To date, two roadshows have been completed, with two more planned.

The roadshow series commenced in November 2024 at the Sea Vista Community Hall in St Francis Bay, drawing 19 participants. Esteemed guest speakers included Darren Mungur, Managing Director of Soul Good Events, Sport, and Activations, and Vangie Boettger, owner of On the Move Events.

The second roadshow was held in February 2025 at the Vusumzi Landu Community Hall in Hankey, where Hantie van der Westhuizen, St Francis Tourism Office Manager, engaged with 22 participants.

Van der Westhuizen shared her experience, stating that she has been part of the St Francis Tourism team since 2015 and joined the St Francis Market team in 2016. Under her involvement, the market has grown significantly, now hosting an average of 90 stalls per event.

She highlighted the success of the first Calamari Festival in 2017, which expanded in 2024 to a nine-day event with various activities.

She furthermore emphasised the importance of thorough preparation, saying, “En-

sure your event plan is solid; collaborate with a reliable safety officer; seek assistance when needed; trust your instincts and familiarise yourself with the relevant Acts and bylaws governing events.”

The recent roadshows focused on sharing industry insights while emphasising a safety-first approach in event planning.

Unlike the initial sessions held in April last year – which primarily aimed to raise awareness about safety at sports and recreational events, the South African National Standard for health and safety at events, municipal events committee policies, applicable municipal by-laws, and the event application process – the current sessions adopt a more interactive and engaging format.

This revised approach has been well received, with positive feedback from attendees.

The roundtable discussion format encourages greater participation and interaction, with attendance limited to 30 participants to ensure meaningful engagement.

To better accommodate community members with weekday commitments, the roadshows have been moved to Saturdays based on feedback from previous sessions.

Upcoming roadshows:

Humansdorp community bids farewell to Ta Mike

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

LOVED by many in Humansdorp and remembered as a humble man, Mkhuseli Michael Tyali sadly drowned at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach on February 22.

To ensure he receives a dignified funeral, the community has rallied to raise the necessary funds.

Xolani Woni, a community member, said that even though Tyali was not well-known, those who knew him have attested to his humble nature.

He said that after attending a funeral on February 22, Tyali spent time at Jeffreys Bay Main Beach where he asked a friend to take a picture of him as he smiled excitedly.

Woni said that he then went for a swim and sadly drowned.

“The last picture he took was taken only a few minutes before he died,” said Woni.

He said that after his passing, they began searching for his family but found that they were unable to pay for his funeral.

To ensure that Tyali receives the funeral he deserves, Woni said that the community began raising funds and has been fortunate enough to raise approximately R4 000 thus far.

He said that they need a total of R6 000, which will be paid to the funeral parlour.

Woni said that they are appealing to anyone who can assist to donate any amount of money towards Tyali’s funeral.

“As concerned members of the community, we are trying

our utmost best to ensure that Mike gets a decent burial, but we cannot do it without the assistance of the community,” said Woni.

He said that nine community members, including himself, Ntombi Khanyi Bailey, Khanya Tanda, Thanduxolo Tyali Rara, Bonisani Sinoko Benni Mrev, Siya Plaatjies, Nosipho Mampandla Mpotso, Nkosinam Qegu Mnkqayi and Luleka Matshoba, have been walking the streets of Humansdorp with raffles to raise funds for Tyali’s funeral.

Woni has advised people to only donate to these individuals.

He said that regular updates will be shared on his Facebook page, Xolani Xman Woni. For more information, contact Xolani Woni at 078 331 8839 or Khanyi Bailey at 074 970 7132.

Community unites to save brave dog after panga attack

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

ON January 27, Tammy, a dog in Sea Vista, St Francis Bay, was brutally assaulted with a panga by an alleged drug addict while lying outside her owner’s shack.

Thankfully, after two surgeries and dedicated care by volunteers of St Francis Animal Rescue, Tammy has gradually healed but will need ongoing treatment to make a full recovery.

Susan Rae Fox, founder and chairperson of the non-profit organisation St Francis Animal Rescue, said that during the incident, Tammy, a small mixed-breed female dog, had her thigh sliced open, removing her skin and exposing her muscle.

She said that Tammy’s owner contacted St Francis Animal Rescue for assistance, and their volunteer, Amanda Tiedt, picked her up and immediately rushed her to the Humansdorp Vet Clinic, where she was treated by Doctors Annelise Barker and Pieter Van Vuuren.

“By the time Amanda picked her up, she was anaemic and shaking from shock and pain,” said Fox.

She said that Van Vuuren did his best to try to close the wound, which was difficult since there was very little skin available to pull the edges of the wound together.

Fox said that they began searching for foster care for Tammy, and Chantel James and her friend, Mae Dutton, generously offered to take care of the little dog.

James received careful instruction in cleaning and bandaging the wound and treating the little dog with antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, and pain medication.

“It was at that stage, exposed to the sight of the horrific wound, we could all see how very challenging it would be to manage to change bandages twice a day while minimising Tammy’s agonising pain,” said Fox.

She said that from the outset, Tammy wore a large plastic cone around her neck to stop her from reaching and potentially damaging her wound.

“Our little rescue was filled with gratitude when she found herself in Chantel’s comfortable home, with her own soft bed, in a quiet room, away from the other curious family dogs. She started to eat and drink again and tried very hard to be brave when her wound was cleaned and her bandages were changed, a process which took two hours for each session and required patience, gentleness, and excellent hygiene to prevent the wound from becoming septic,” said Fox.

She said that Tammy had to undergo a further two surgeries, firstly when a flap from her stomach was sutured over her wound and then a second intervention when there was another attempt to suture the skin closed. Fox said that veterinary costs for Tammy were high because she needed to be taken regularly to the clinic to check her progress, and a great deal of medication and bandaging was required. Thankfully, to help with the increasing costs, James and Dutton were able to raise funds, but more funds are needed.

“Chantel and Tammy became inseparable over this time together, and Chantel spent many nights sleeping on the floor next to Tammy to soothe her at night when the pain was most extreme,” said Fox.

James said that from the moment they met Tammy, it was clear that she was a brave little fighter.

“She has endured painful dressing changes without so much as a whimper. Her tail wags like mad when she sees us, and she melts in our arms when we cuddle her. This is one very special dog,” said James.

Fox said that recently, James needed to travel to Ballito in KwaZulu-Natal for two months, and since she did not want to negatively affect Tammy’s healing and happiness, she began raising funds for Tammy’s flight.

James then reached out to various people for assistance, and she was fortunate to receive assistance from Brent Lindeque, the founder of The Good Things Guy platform, who raised awareness about Tammy’s plight to help collect funds.

She also received assistance from Shelly Rankin, the owner of Surf Sense, who custom-designed a comfortable travel suit for Tammy to keep her wound secure during their flight.

Fox said that another amazing gesture of support was from Wize Move Team, who stepped in to pay for Tammy’s flight after Animal Transport Services negotiated with various role

players, including Airlink Cargo, to arrange Tammy’s transport at a special rate.

She further said that St Francis Animal Rescue volunteer, Sarah Campbell, also organised a Back a Buddy campaign to raise funds for Tammy’s ongoing medical care.

“Chantel changed Tammy’s life when she offered to take care of her, and we have all been deeply humbled and touched by how many people wanted to help heal Tammy through kind donations and loving messages,” said Fox.

“At a time when the world around us seems to be collapsing, Tammy’s journey is a testimony to the love and hope that still exists in so many hearts and holds us all together.”

New chapter as Angels Daycare expands

ON February 27, the Centre for Early Childhood Development (CECD), a non-profit organisation dedicated to the development of Early Childhood Development (ECD) programmes, proudly welcomed various stakeholders and supporters to a groundbreaking ceremony at the new site for Angels Daycare in Kruisfontein, Humansdorp.

CECD programme manager, Jessica Blom, said that the new building for Angels Daycare is part of their larger ECD project in the area, which is supported by the Kouga Wind Farm Community Development Trust. She said that this project includes training and capacity building for principals, teachers, and governing body members of ECD centres, as well as ECD equipment provision and infrastructure upgrades to some ECD centres.

“Quality early childhood development is critical in laying the foundation for a child’s future learning, well-being, and success. By investing in ECD infrastructure, training, and resources, this project ensures that more young children have access to safe,

nurturing and stimulating environments that support their growth and development,” said Blom.

She said that the ceremony marked the exciting beginning of Angels Daycare’s transformation.

The first step of construction, putting up the fence, signifies the start of a brighter future for the children and the community it serves.

Speaking at the event, Sarah Atmore, the infrastructure manager from CECD, said that getting to this point had been a journey and that they are pleased to have other partners come alongside to support the centre.

“Goldrush Foundation has undertaken to fund a perimeter fence and wall so that the site is safe and secure for the children who will attend the ECD centre once construction is complete, and this will be built by the team at Kouga Fencing, who were also present at the ceremony,” said Atmore.

The principal of Angels Daycare, Petronella Ruiters, also spoke at the event, thanking those who have supported her since she first opened her ECD centre in 2009.

She highlighted the great impact that the Kouga ECD Project has had on the ECD community and the lives of many women and young children. For more information or to support the project, contact Jessica Blom at 021 683 2420 or email jblom@cecd.org.za.

Hy was glo ’n baie besige man en ons moes stiptelik aanmeld by sy landelike huis in Qunu. Dis toe in mooi blommetjies-koppies bedien.

“But you know what…Madiba is Madiba…I cannot discipline him!”

En net daar en dan sê hy: “I never thought of having a white woman as a wife. I think Veronica will be the one. I will send my tribe to your people and discuss everything.”

VERONICA

Hankey talent signs contract with Blue Bulls team

FROM the streets of Phillipsville in Hankey to the bustling fields of professional rugby, Jaden Kapank’s journey has been nothing short of inspiring.

At the tender age of eleven, Jaden’s passion for rugby ignited, and now, eight years later, his dedication and talent have paid off. The 19-year-old has secured a contract to play for the Blue Bulls u/20 team.

Kapank, who admires Springbok rugby player, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, began his rugby career by playing in the streets and participating in various school teams. His natural ability and hard work did not go unnoticed.

“I am honoured to have been recognised and given the contract at my favourite team. I am a Blue Bulls supporter. They are a strong team with excellent players,” Kapank expressed with pride.

The young sportsman, who excels in the positions of lock and flank, caught the attention of scouts during his time playing in the Boland and at the prestigious Wildeklawer tournament, where he was named Player of the Tournament in Kimberley.

This month, Kapank signed a two-year contract with the Blue Bulls, marking a significant milestone in his budding career.

The Blue Bulls u/20 team is set to travel to Thailand in July to compete in the Next Gen Blitz 2025. While Kapank will undoubtedly miss his family, the local cuisine, and his hometown, he remains grateful for the opportunity to play rugby on an international stage.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to play rugby internationally and to make my town Han-

key proud by God’s grace,” he said.

Jaden’s mother, Cindy Timoti, is overwhelmed with joy for her son’s achievement.

“I am grateful to God for giving my son the talent to live his dream of playing rugby. I am also grateful that he can represent Hankey and Kouga at an international level,” Timoti shared.

Kapank attended Hankey Primary School, but his rugby journey began at Gamtoos Valley Primary Schools, where Shaun Barnard nurtured his talent. He later received a bursary to attend Drostdy Technical High School in Worcester.

Timoti recalled the pride she felt when Jaden called her from Kimberley with the news of his opportunity with the Blue Bulls.

“Hankey is a small town full of rugby lovers. The young boys in our town love rugby and they are rising up. I am proud of my son and thank God for answering my prayers. I teach him and his siblings to remain humble, to fear God, and to always pray,” she said.

Recently, Timoti and her husband, Stanley, accompanied Jaden to the Blue Bulls Institute in Limpopo, where he will continue to hone his skills and pursue his rugby dreams. Kouga Executive Mayor, Hattingh Bornman, extended his congratulations to the young rugby star.

“Jaden Kapank’s achievement is a testament to the talent and determination that thrives in our communities. His journey from Hankey to the Blue Bulls under-20 team is an inspiration to aspiring young athletes in Kouga.

“We are incredibly proud of him and wish him great success as he takes on this exciting new chapter in his rugby career.”

Gewigoptellers maak gereed vir SA kampioenskap

Simoné dazzles at national pageant event

SIMONÉ Otto, a local Feline Model from Aston Bay, Jeffreys Bay, has done exceptionally well in pageantry, representing the Eastern Cape during the Miss Hotlegs South Africa national pageant on November 3, 2024, in Gauteng.

In her first national pageant, she excelled and secured the title of Miss Hotlegs South Africa Brand Ambassador for 2024/2025, while also placing as the first runner-up in the teens category.

Her ambassadorship emphasised her dedication to assisting her community.

Otto has a deep-seated ambition for civic engagement and has been actively involved in her community since the age of 13, hosting fundraisers and participating in voluntary work.

She will continue to motivate and inspire the youth and her community as she also aspires to establish her own non-profit organisation at a later stage.

Otto believes in the heart of inner beauty and working together to make a positive impact and leave a lasting effect on the lives of people.
