Family alleges misconduct after body mix-up

A FAMILY in Humansdorp is seeking answers after a loved one's body was allegedly sent to the wrong funeral home following her death at the Humansdorp Hospital, forcing relatives to pay additional fees for the transfer.

Nonceba Hlela passed away on May 9 at the Humansdorp Hospital.

What followed was a confusing and distressing series of events that her family believes point to possible misconduct by hospital staff.

The deceased's cousin, Xolani Woni, said that the family received a call from the hospital at about 22:30 on May 9 confirming that Hlela had passed.

He said that the family confirmed with the hospital that the deceased had a funeral policy with Avbob Funeral Service, Humansdorp, and requested that her

body be transferred to the said funeral home, which the hospital agreed to.

"We spent the weekend informing relatives of Nonceba's passing, believing her body was safely at Avbob as arranged," said Woni.

Despite having discussions with the hospital, he reported that by Monday, May 12, they had received no communication from Avbob.

Instead, Woni said that a different funeral home (their name is known to Kouga Express ) in Humansdorp contacted the family after allegedly requesting the hospital provide them with contact information, as no one had claimed the deceased's body.

"After discovering that this other funeral home had Nonceba's body we had to pay them R2 100 for her release to Avbob," said Woni.

An anonymous employee at Avbob Humansdorp confirmed that the deceased

had an active funeral policy with their company.

The employee expressed surprise at the situation, stating, "We often receive after-hours phone calls, and we are always available on the phone regardless of the time. However, Humansdorp Hospital never called us to collect the deceased's body."

The employee added that it is common practice for their driver to pick up a body within 30 minutes of receiving a call.

Once the family visited Avbob to clarify the confusion, the employee confirmed that they collected the deceased on May 13, four days after she passed away.

Woni claims that the hospital staff may have deliberately directed the body to the other funeral home for personal gain.

"I've heard about people dying in hospitals, and hospital workers calling undertakers to come and collect the bodies, and they are paid a fee. This, in my book,

is called selling bodies, which is wrong," said Woni.

This funeral home reportedly confirmed to Woni that they were called by the hospital at 23:00 on May 9.

The family is now seeking a refund of the R2 100 transfer fee and calling for an investigation into the alleged practice.

"All we want is the R2 100 paid back," Woni said.

"I also want hospital employees to stop making money out of grieving people by selling their bodies to whichever funeral parlour that will pay them."

Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson, Sizwe Kupelo, said that the Humansdorp Hospital has launched an internal investigation into the matter.

• The funeral home was contacted numerous times for comment, but calls went unanswered.

JBay couple’s new show builds hope through brokenness

RAZAAN PLAATJIES

IN the picturesque coastal towns of Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay, a renovation show with heart is changing lives and inspiring viewers across South Africa.

Bou of Breek , which translates to "Build or Break," is more than just another home makeover programme — it's a testament to renewal, hope, and the beauty that can emerge from brokenness.

For Pikkie and Zanelle Dorfling, the creators and hosts of the show, the journey began with their personal crisis.

Zanelle said that they were living a fast-paced life, chasing careers, success and everything that came with it — but behind the scenes, their marriage was falling apart.

"Our marriage was on the brink of divorce," said Zanelle.

"We realised if we didn't make a radical change, we'd lose more than just our way — we'd lose each other. That was the defining moment."

In 2022, the couple made the decision to leave Stellenbosch, where they had been living for only a few months, and relocate to Jeffreys Bay — a move that would transform not only their marriage but also their purpose.

"We had spent our whole lives in Nqweba (formerly Kirkwood) before briefly moving to Stellenbosch," said Zanelle.

"It was in that short window, between what was familiar and what was uncertain, that we felt a clear call to live slower, more intentionally, and closer to family."

"We wanted to take a leap of faith and follow a dream to save our marriage and our family," said Pikkie.

The concept for Bou of Breek was born years earlier when Zanelle discovered Home & Garden Television (HGTV), an American basic cable channel, while visiting America.

What began as a lighthearted dream evolved into something much deeper after the couple faced their own struggles. They then reached out to Reynardt Hugo from Straatkat Media, and Bou of Breek was born.

"Like so many couples, we've faced seasons that nearly broke us — moments where we stood at the edge, with no hope left for our marriage. Thankfully, it was in that brokenness that God met us. He began to rebuild us, piece by piece, with grace, patience and purpose," said Zanelle.

This personal journey of restoration became the heartbeat of their show, inspiring their slogan, "#elkehuishetsykruis" which translates to "every home has its cross."

"Every cross carries the promise of hope because sometimes you have to be broken open to be beautifully rebuilt," said Zanelle.

The first episode of Bou of Bree k aired

on kykNET on April 6 and quickly captured viewers' hearts with its authentic approach to renovation.

For the Dorflings, the physical transformations are only part of the story.

Zanelle said that they wanted to inspire people, uplift them, and show that starting over is possible, especially when life has been tough.

"When the space around you makes you feel good, it lifts your entire outlook," said Zanelle.

Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay provide more than just beautiful backdrops for the show — they embody the very essence of what Bou of Breek represents. Pikkie said that there is something "sacred" in the sea air in Jeffreys Bay and St Francis Bay — space to breathe again.

"The natural beauty reflects the heart of what we do, taking something weathered and making it whole. These towns are full of contrast, character, and possibility, perfect for stories of healing," said Pikkie.

Zanelle said that the community has embraced them with open arms.

"From suppliers to locals cheering us on, there's been real warmth and practical support. We feel like part of something bigger here," said Zanelle.

While many renovations in Season 1 were client-funded through their design and construction business, the Dorflings have ambitious plans for the future.

"We'd love to take on more projects where we're not just changing spaces, but launching people," said Pikkie.

"A dream would be to renovate a space that becomes a hub of community healing — maybe a halfway house, a community kitchen, or something with longterm impact."

Zanelle said that their heart is to reach more people.

She said that they are working to build partnerships and sponsorships so that they can bless those who can't afford a renovation but truly need one.

Zanelle further said that they want to change lives, one space at a time.

Pikkie said that Bou of Breek is ultimately about transformation that goes beyond physical spaces.

"This is about all of us. It's about showing the rest of South Africa who Kouga really is — resilient, creative, generous, and full of heart," said Pikkie.

When they're not renovating or filming, the Dorflings cherish their time in Jeffreys Bay and enjoy going for spontaneous drives along the coast, fishing, watching sunsets as a family, and of course, a good local coffee shop visit.

"JBay gives us space to slow down and reconnect," said Zanelle.

Bou of Breek airs on kykNET (Channel 144) on Sundays at 17:30, with repeats throughout the week.

Local star adds trophy to growing collection

HUMANSDORP'S hip-hop sensation, Siyabonga George, better known as Exxo daSniper, continues to make waves in the South African music industry after clinching the prestigious Mzansi Traditional and Cultural Music Awards (MTCMA) trophy on May 24 in Johannesburg.

This latest achievement follows his impressive back-to-back wins as Best Hip Hop Artist at the Mzansi Arts and Media Awards (MAMA) in 2023 and 2024.

George, who was born in KwaMaqoma (formerly Fort Beaufort) before moving to Humansdorp in 1998, expressed that this newest accolade holds special significance for him.

"It was my first time to be nominated for the MTCMA Awards, and again I came out victorious," said George.

"To me, this award means a lot compared to the previous ones. I was with legends in the South African music industry who witnessed my achievement and came to congratulate me."

The award ceremony also provided networking opportunities, with George engaging in conversations with industry heavyweight Lance Stehr, CEO of Ghetto Ruff, about his musical journey.

George's path to success has been marked by persistence and dedication.

As previously reported, he began his career as a rapper in 2001, forming a music group with

friends.

After some turbulence and the disbanding of his original group, he reunited with select members in 2008 to form Dogg Squad, which went on to release four albums and numerous mixtapes.

His 2023 single, Kwaze Kwamnandi , featured collaborations with established artists Zakwe, Merel and Procasette, produced by Gqeberha's Stidow.

This track further cemented his reputation in the industry.

Beyond music, George demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit by launching Kasi Sniper, a clothing brand created in 2015 that continues to be in high demand.

Looking ahead, George's eagerly anticipated album is nearing completion, though he remains committed to quality over rushing the release.

"My album is almost done as I promised, but I still have more features to deal with, as many more well-known artists are willing to work with me," said George.

He further said that the release date will be shared once the album is complete and he is satisfied with all the songs.

"I have to give people the best album which they've been waiting for," said George.

The upcoming project boasts an impressive roster of collaborators, including Zakwe, Abdus (Insuma-nsumane), Flash Ikumkani, Just Bheki, Cy Music, Frans CEO, Bongo Riot, AB Crazy and Merel, among others.

Adding to his momentum, CCA

Distribution, operating under Gallo, has approached George for a distribution deal.

Despite his rising profile, George remains grounded and connected to his roots in KwaNomzamo, Humansdorp.

He continues to use his platform to inspire others from similar backgrounds.

"From where I come from, all I used to tell the artists that are still pushing their hustle is that they must never give up. They must never allow anyone or anything to destroy them and kill their dream," said George.

"I'm living proof because I also come from the dusty streets of KwaNomzamo and without any help from anybody, I managed to keep pushing day by day, and today I'm here."

George's ambitions extend beyond personal success.

He aims to bring well-known artists to his community and help fellow artists fulfil their dreams, ultimately improving local living standards.

"Crime and unemployment are the reasons our youth end up using drugs and alcohol. I am praying that God will help me be successful so that I can help others as well," said George.

His message to youth facing challenges remains consistent.

George has advised young people to stay away from drugs, seek God, keep praying and push forward towards their dreams. He said that it is important that they stay humble and have respect, which he believes will take them far in life.

Daardie jare was dit nog ‘n makliker spel as deesdae. “

Adorable furballs await forever homes

Haar dogter is oorlede.

• Belangstellendes wat graag wil leer brug speel, kan Letje Smit kontak by 0722802003.

MENSTRUAL HYGIENE DAY:

Girls’ education, dignity championed

IN honour of Menstrual Hygiene Day, Woodlands Dairy has once again demonstrated its deep commitment to community upliftment by donating sanitary products to schools across South Africa.

This initiative aims to emphasise the company's belief in the importance of education, gender equality, and the dignity of every young girl.

Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed globally on May 28, highlights the critical need for access to sanitary products and education about menstruation.

For many young girls, especially in underserved communities, the lack of access to sanitary products can lead to embarrassment, stigma, and school absenteeism, hindering their academic progress and self-confidence.

To help address this issue, Woodlands Dairy extended support to the following schools in Kouga:

• Makukhanye Primary School in Jeffreys Bay

• Kruisfontein Primary School in Humansdorp

• Sea Vista Primary School in St Francis Bay.

Additional support was also provided to schools in KwaZulu-Natal, Western Cape, and Gauteng.

This donation provides young learners

with the sanitary products they need to manage their periods hygienically and confidently, helping to minimise school absences and reduce the stigma often associated with menstruation.

Mandla Charlie from Woodlands Dairy, said, "We believe that no girl should have to miss school because of her period."

"By providing these essential items, we're not only promoting health and hygiene, but also helping girls stay focused on their education and dreams."

Woodlands Dairy's commitment goes beyond dairy production.

Through initiatives like this, the company actively contributes to the well-being and empowerment of the communities it serves.

These efforts reflect a broader vision: to build a society where every child, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities to thrive.

By supporting menstrual hygiene, Woodlands Dairy is investing in the future of young women, fostering dignity, self-esteem, and long-term educational success.

Their support serves as a reminder of how businesses can play a meaningful role in addressing social issues and shaping a more inclusive and empowered future for all.

Rising pool stars headed to nationals

THANKS to a donation from Smhart Security, two Kouga 8 Ball Pool players, Caiden Seejiram and Ruan Jackson, have been selected to represent the u/18 Eastern Cape pool team at the 8 Ball National Championship from July 12 to 19 in Potchefstroom.

Chairperson, Crystal Hoffstaetter, said that Kouga 8 Ball is a non-profit organisation dedicated to growing the sport of 8 Ball Pool across all age groups in their community.

She said that they proudly support Juniors, Ladies, Seniors, and Masters, providing a space for passion, discipline, and fun.

Hoffstaetter said that their junior players mean the world to their club.

She added that their involvement in the Kouga 8 Ball Pool is more than just about competition; it is about building passion, purpose, and pride.

"For these young players, the league offers a positive outlet, a safe space to grow, and a chance to dream big," said Hoffstaetter.

"Our junior players are especially close to our hearts. The league gives them something positive to strive for and keeps them off the streets."

Hoffstaetter said that each year, their juniors work incredibly hard to earn the opportunity to participate in pre-trials for the 8 Ball Pool nationals.

She said that making it to the national stage is not just about skill, it's about commitment, discipline, and representing their province and hometown with honour.

"By giving them something to look forward to, the sport keeps them focused, off the streets, and on a path of growth and achievement. We are proud of every step they take on this journey," said Hoffstaetter.

She said that as an NPO, they rely

on annual contributions from each of their players to sustain their operations.

However, Hoffstaetter said that they cannot succeed through these efforts alone.

As a result, she said that they are continuously seeking new members, supporters, and sponsors to help further their mission.

Thankfully, the two players were fortunate enough to receive a generous donation from the local security company, Smhart Security, recently.

Seejiram said that he is excited to be a part of the u/18 team, as representing his province is a real honour.

"I'm excited to work with my teammates to push ourselves to new levels and make the Eastern Cape proud," said Seejiram.

He further said that he is very thankful for all the sponsorships he

has received thus far.

Jackson said that being chosen to attend the nationals is a huge honour and that he is truly grateful for the opportunity.

"Even though I have not gone to the nationals yet, just being selected means the world to me. It's a chance to grow, represent myself with pride, and be part of something bigger than myself," said Jackson.

He said that he is excited, motivated, and ready to give the national games his all.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported me with positivity and belief, and a special thank you to the sponsors who help make opportunities like this possible. I'll carry your support with me every step of the way," said Jackson.

Get ready to dance for a cause

FOLLOWING the resounding success of its first “Mandjiedans” in April, PropertyTime is thrilled to announce the next community dance event, taking place on Saturday, June 14, at the Aston Bay Community Hall, starting at 18:00. The previous dance brought together locals from across the Kouga region for a lively evening of music, dancing, and good company — all in support of a worthy cause. Guests arrived with picnic baskets filled with their favourite drinks and snacks, creating a warm, relaxed, and joyful atmosphere that celebrated community spirit and social connection.

“I was pleasantly surprised by the interest and the public’s enthusiasm for the evening,” said Durma Loubser, Area Manager for PropertyTime in the Kouga area.

The April event successfully raised R5050.00, which was proudly donated to Ons Tuiste, a care facility in Humansdorp. The funds were officially handed over to Ons Tuiste's manager, Martie Zeelie, on 26 May 2025.

Building on this momentum, PropertyTime is inviting everyone back for the next Mandjiedans on June 14. As before, guests are encouraged to bring their own “mandjies” (bas-

kets) of food and drinks and come ready to dance the night away.

This time, all proceeds will go to support Die Dorp van Drome, another inspiring local initiative. It’s an opportunity to have fun while making a meaningful contribution to the community.

Whether you're a seasoned dancer or just looking for a great night out, don’t miss this chance to join in the fun — and make a difference.

Save the date, gather your mandjie, and come and celebrate community, dance, and giving!

For tickets, contact Anne-Marie at 083 457 3811 or Durma at 083 461 7338.

Kickboxer star gears up for world champs in Dubai

KICKBOXING sensation, Taylor Urquhart (21), has brought pride to Jeffreys Bay after earning the prestigious honour of representing South Africa at the upcoming Kickboxing World Championships in Dubai from November 21 to 30.

Despite this amazing achievement, the talented fighter now faces her toughest challenge outside the ring, raising R70 000 to cover essential travel costs, accommodation, and championship participation fees.

Urquhart, a member of Botha's Kickboxing Club, has been passionate about the sport since she was six years old.

She has earned provincial colours and become a national champion in three divisions.

These divisions include the Senior Women's u/55kg category in Semi Contact, Light Continuous, and Kick Light, where she was placed first in all three at the SAKA Nationals in Newcastle earlier this year.

Shihan Louwrens Botha, head of Botha's Kickboxing and leader of the Eastern Cape Provincial Kickboxing Association, has emphasised the importance of kickboxers registering with the South African Kickboxing Association (SAKA), the only association recognised by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO), which is affiliated with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Urquhart, who is a coach at Botha's Kickboxing Club, said that she does not participate in kickboxing for herself alone, but to assist other young fighters find the same strength and purpose she found in the sport.

"Kickboxing has taught me discipline, resilience, and confidence — things I try to pass on to every athlete I train," said Ur-

quhart.

Rika van Jaarsveld, Botha's Kickboxing team manager, said that she believes in Urquhart's potential.

"Taylor's determination and passion are truly inspiring, and I have no doubt that she will make a lasting impact on the international stage," said Jaarsveld.

Urquhart is seeking sponsorships to make her dream a reality.

She said that she would appreciate any amount of sponsorship, big or small.

"This is a dream I have held for 15 years, and those who are able to assist will be helping me achieve this dream. More importantly, you'll be showing a young South African athlete that she's not alone in this journey," said Urquhart.

She said that with the help of financial assistance, she aims to make her mark on the international kickboxing stage and inspire young athletes in South Africa.

For more information or to contribute, visit Taylor Urquhart's BackaBuddy campaign titled, "Get Taylor to Dubai", or contact Shihan Louwrens Botha at 072 357 5090.
