‘there’s always light’
As the Department of Basic Education released the matric results for 2024 on Tuesday 14 January many learners were not pleased with their results.
The results were not what they expected and are now in a serious predicament, figuring out how to move forward.
However, life continues.
As parents we need to demonstrate our leadership skills and inspire them to hold their heads high.

Right now we need to encourage them not to give up. They must understand there will always be a tomorrow.
They need to be resilient and firm in whatever they undertake.
Giving up is not an option.
Gone are the days when parents shouted orbeattheirkidsbecausetheyfailed. These days we address matters in an amicable manner.
We must tell them there is no need to cry over spilt milk. I know some parents are harsh by nature and are disappointed by their children’s poor performance.
We need to sit down with the children and convince them not to think otherwise. We must advise them not to listen too much negativity out there.

Parents, no matter how angry or disappointed, mustn’t say things they may regret later.
We need to make the children understand life is full of ups and downs, and they will not always get what they truly want or things will not always come out the way that they expect.
Besides those who didn’t make it, there are those who did well but failed to get placement at tertiary institutions.
They feel as if life is unfair because they did everything that was required, but are still roaming the streets.
They need to be encouraged as well as to stay focused.

Taxi operators in Nyanga have distanced themselves from a deadly shooting that erupted at the local taxi rank on Tuesday 14 January.
One person died and seven were injured during the fire exchange. At least 13 rifles and seven handguns were confiscated following the incident.
Themotivefortheshootingisunderpolice investigation.
Provincial police spokesperson Brig Novela Potelwa said the provincial officers seized the firearms and one taxi security guard was killed in what is believed to be intra-taxi association conflict in the neighbourhood.
She said 19 security guards are currently beingquestionedaspartoftheinvestigation.
“Police reports indicate a team comprising police-intelligence operatives, National Intervention Unit, K-9, the drone unit and the provincial combat team were busy monitoring movements in close proximity of the Nyanga taxi rank when shots were ex-
changed between the warring parties. As a result of the deployment further shooting was averted.”
Potelwa said the officers saturated the area and other hot spots with deployments as scores of commuters were left stranded because of the shooting incident.
Shestatedthattheinvestigationwasinthe hands of the provincial taxi task team.
“Engagement with PSIRA is ongoing in ef-
fortstodeterminethelegalityofthefirearms and the security companies they work for.”
Nkululeko Sityebi, Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (Cata) spokesperson, said the group was still shocked and confused. He said the incident has tarnished its image. “We don’t know what prompted the shooting, as the majority of us were not in the taxi rank because we are not officially open yet.
“We closed the rank on Wednesday 18 December last year and are reopening it on Saturday 18 January.
“We heard from the people on the streets that there were private security guards and some members of the Sea Water Route (taxis operating from Nyanga to Cape Town). But it is not clear what really happened, and the case is now being investigated by the officers. We are waiting for them to tell us what happened.”
Sityebi sent Cata’s condolences to the deceased family and wished a special recovery to the injured people.
Nyanga Community Policing Forum secretary Dumisani Qwebe described the incident as terrible.
He urged the law-enforcement agencies to intervene and stop the battle before it went out of control.
“Weareshockedbytheincident.Wedidn’t expect such incidents, especially in the beginning of the year. We are appealing to the law-enforcement officers to swiftly investigate it.”
The Western Cape police are investigating a murder case after a 32-year-old police constable was gunned down at Gcuwa Street in Mfuleni on Sunday 12 January.
Colonel Andrè Traut, provincial police spokesperson, said police launched an extensive manhunt for two suspects. He said the off-duty officer was killed during a robbery. He appealed to the public to come forward with information.
“At around 05:30, the victim who was on
his way to report for duty at the Cape Town International Airport was waiting for a colleague at Gcuwa Street in Mfuleni in his private vehicle when he was approached by two unknown assailants according to eyewitness accounts and shot him. The victim, who was unarmed at the time of the incident, was robbed of his cellphone,” said Traut.
The Western Cape police commissioner, Lt- Gen Thembisile Patekile visited the crime scene and condemned the callous attack. He vowed to use all available resour-
ces to bring the killers to book.
A community leader who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal said the community is shocked by the incident.
He urged the law enforcement officers not to leave any stone unturned.
“We are disturbed by the incident. And we are appealing to the state to take stringent decisions against the perpetrators. If we kill law enforcement officers, who is going to protect us?” he asked.
The leader urged the government to deploy more officers in the area and de-
scribed Mfuleni as one the busiest townships.
“Crime is becoming a norm in the area, especially murder, carjacking and genderbased violence.
“As a community leader, I appeal to all the community stakeholders to work together for the betterment of our community.
“Anyone who has any information regarding the incident must report it to the nearest police station. Enough is enough now,” he said.
He added that the school’s Mathematics pass rate had increased to 96,0% from 56,5% in 2023, while the Physical Science pass rate increased to 85,2% from 56,2% in 2023.
Maynier said the Metro East District was the second most successful in the region, with a 88,5% pass rate, following Eden and Central Karoo Education District, which obtained 89,2%, an increase of 4,69 percentage points from 2023.
“This is the highest pass rate the district haseverachievedinthematricexams.Ithas a higher and overall provincial pass rate. This year Metro East has a Bachelor’s pass
rate of 49,1%. This is the highest Bachelor’s pass rate the district has ever achieved in the matric exams and it is higher than the overall Bachelor’s pass rate for the province.”
School principal Sityhilelo Ntamo labelled the success as a dream come true for him and his staff.
“I’m so excited. I knew that we would make it one day. We worked very hard as staff members and learners as well. The results didn’t come overnight. We sacrificed a lot to ensure we fulfilled our goal.”
He also expressed his gratitude to all the community stakeholders who assisted them
on their journey. Detailing how they obtained a 12% increase, Ntamo said the school walked the extra mile.
“We had various programmes that included after school and weekend classes. But the award goes to my staff members for their resilience and never-say-die attitude. I never asked any of them to stay after school, yet they stayed behind with the learners and some of them had classes over weekends.” he explained.
Kagiso Mgwazeni, the school’s top learner, said he was not surprised by his success. The 18-year-old received five dis-
tinctions,forMaths((91%),PhysicalScience (87%), English Additional Language (82%), Life Orientation (88%) and Engineering Graphic and Design (81%) .
“I worked so hard. When a teacher started achapterinthebookandleftitinthemiddle, hoping to finish it the following day. When I arrived home I would read the whole chapter, and when the teacher continued I already have an insight into what she was talking about and I am able to raise questions.” He added he had also read previous question papers. Mgwazeni advised his peers to stay focused all the time.
Local development forums are pleased with the 2024 matric results even though they said there is a lot that needs to be done.
The results were announced by Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube on Monday 13 January.
The forums stated the improvement gave hope and showed that there was something right the department did.
KDF first deputy secretary Nkosikhona Gaqa said the results have changed the perception that some people have about the area. He praised the Khayelitsha schools for the great job.
“We are happy with the matric results for 2024. All the schools did well, particularly Joe Slovo Secondary School. What Joe Slovo did is history.
“Its victory came as a surprise to many people, but we are saying well done to the staff members, learners and all other organisations that assisted them during the year,” said Gaqa.
He said the achievement reflected the dedication and hard work demonstrated by the staff and learners.
Gaqa praised the parents and the community at large for showing unwavering support to all the schools.
He appealed to those learners who didn’t make it not to lose hope but to continue working hard.
Gugulethu Development Forum secretary Vincent Domingo reiterated Gaqa’s sentiments, citing that they were pleased
with the outcome even though there was a slight increase in all the schools in Gugulethu.
“All of them have improved, but we want to see all of them above 90%. Fezeka Secondary School has slightly improved from 67,9% in 2023 to 72,3% in 2024. ID Mkhize Senior Secondary obtained 73,7 % in 2023 and now is sitting at 85,7%. Also Intshukumo Secondary School obtained 76,1% from 72,1% in 2023,” counted Domingo, adding that they were happy that thevschools kept the upward momentum.
He urged the government to put more effort on supporting the local schools.

In the play, four women meet to reflect, joined together by their anticipation of their husbands’ return.
Engaged in sacred moments of sharing and fellowship, they lean on the heroism of Winnie Mandela and the connection they feel towards her.
The women interrogate their own and other women’s reasons for waiting and what this has done to them.
This interrogation leads to a series of hearty, haunting and critical conversations, drawingaudiencestoreflectonthe historical struggles of women, while drawing parallels to our own contemporary lives.
All this is done with intense emotion and cleverly-injected humour, weaving the characters’ private accounts together and exposing the shadows, isolation and complexities of their journeys against the backdrop of the life and times of Mandela.
