The baseline for all products making compostability claims in North America are the tests called for in the ASTM standards.

Those tests happen in approved labs, and are repeatable indicators of how products will perform in a “real world” compost facility.

BPI reviews the test results, adds in their own provisions for fluorinated chemicals (PFAS) and labeling, and grants certification to items that meet the requirements.

Despite the absence of an ASTM standard for field disintegration testing, it has become an important data point for composters, particularly as processing technologies and time-frame requirements have evolved. We work with composters to evaluate how our products are performing in different real world environments, and many have been approved

by CMA for their performance in specific composting technologies.

Bags & Can Liners ASTM International, formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials, is an international organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards. There are currently three different ASTM standards for compostable products and materials – D6400, D6868, and D8410. These standards define the baseline requirements for compostability including time frames for disintegration and biodegradation.

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is the leading authority on compostable products and packaging in North America and has been certifying materials and finished goods since 1999.

All products and materials certified

by BPI meet ASTM standards for compostability in addition to BPI’s own requirements for eligibility, fluorinated chemicals (PFAS), and labeling.

Field testing for Compostable Products We submit all of our BPICertified items to the Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA) for field testing.

CMA is a nationwide partnership of compost manufacturing facilities providing field disintegration testing for foodservice products. CMA’s mission is to make compost manufacturing more sustainable by working proactively to fieldtest compostable products in real-world compost processing technologies. We were one of the first supporters of CMA as we see value in having composters test and confirm that our products break down successfully at their facilities. This is a valuable complement to the lab-based BPI certification, which we have long used as third-party validation of compostability.

No-Added PFAS Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of synthetic chemicals used in many products to impart water- and grease-resistant properties. Vanguard® uses alternative FDAapproved chemistries to achieve similar performance without the use of added PFAS. Patents pending on the new formula.

BPI-Certified Compostable iodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is a third-party organization that provides B certification for materials and products that break down in a commercial composting environment. “BPI Certified” means a product has gone through a rigorous testing process for compostability.

Developed by Clean Production Action (CPA) and the Center for Environmental Health (CEH), GreenScreen Certified is an independent, non-profit certification standard that promotes the use of preferred chemicals in products and manufacturing. Silver certification prohibits the use of chemicals in the Restricted Substances List (RSL) – including PFAS - set within each product category plus thousands of chemicals listed on globally recognized chemical hazard lists. Every chemical used in the Vanguard® formulation went through evaluation. This certification attests that the product does not contain known chemicals of high concern to human health and the environment.
