Eco-Products Core Products Guide

Page 1

Green is all we do™

We make products with renewable, post-consumer recycled, or reusable materials,* and care deeply about what happens to them after use.

This singular focus makes it possible for us to lead in ways that are hard to follow.

We deliver benefits to our partners that are unavailable anywhere else in the market.

Certified B Corps are companies that meet high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Our B Corp Certification, and updated articles of incorporation from an INC to a PBC (Public Benefit Corporation) provide third-party certification that we are “walking-the-talk" and push us to be the best we can be.

The EcoVadis Rating covers a broad range of nonfinancial management systems including Environmental, Labor & Human Rights, Ethics & Sustainable Procurement impacts. Each company is rated on the material issues as they pertain to their company’s size, location and industry. The goal is to drive global supply chain sustainability – influencing spend as a “force for good” to push beyond compliance.

Certifications

Compostability Standards, Certifications, and Approvals

A product is “compostable” if there is scientific evidence that it will break down or become part of stable compost in a safe and timely manner, in a properly managed commercial composting facility. We rely on third parties to test, certify, and approve our products as compostable so we can confidently make that claim and label them accordingly.

ASTM International is an global organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards.

There are currently three di erent ASTM standards for compostable products and materials: D6400, D6868, and D8410.

These standards define the baseline requirements for compostability including time frames for disintegration and biodegradation.

The Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) is the leading authority on compostable products in North America.

All products and materials certified by BPI meet ASTM standards for compostability in addition to BPI’s own requirements related to eligibility, fluorinated chemicals (PFAS), and labeling.

Compost Manufacturing Alliance (CMA is a nationwide partnership of compost manufacturing facilities.

CMA works proactively to field test compostable products in real-world compost processing technologies.

All of our BPI-Certified products get field-tested. We view CMA Approval as a valuable complement to the lab-based BPI certification.

European Certifications

These two European certification programs rely on EN 13432 as their baseline compostability standard, which is similar to the ASTM standards used in the US.

How a Product Gets Verified as Compostable

1. Lab Testing

Approved labs conduct ASTM tests that are repeatable indicators of how products will perform in a “real world” compost facility.

2. Certification

BPI reviews the test results, adds in their own provisions for fluorinated chemicals (PFAS) and labeling, and grants certification to items that meet the additional requirements.

3. Field Testing

CMA evaluates how our products perform in real world environments.

More than 340 of our products have been approved by CMA for their performance in specific composting technologies.

Despite the absence of a standard for field disintegration testing, it has become an important data point for composters, particularly as processing technologies and time-frame requirements evolve.

Contamination Mitigation

CIRC (Controls Intended to Remove Contamination) is a scalable, generator-focused (think Restaurants, Stadiums, Venues, etc.) contamination mitigation program designed to do three things:

1. Systematically control contamination from non-compostable materials.

2. Increase composter confidence in organics streams that contain post-consumer food scraps and certified compostable packaging.

3. Demonstrate a systems approach to contamination mitigation is possible in an array of foodservice environments.

Industry Engagement

We advocate relentlessly for an organics diversion system that includes food scraps and packaging, and collaborate regularly with organizations from across the country that share our passion.

State Legislation Overview

A number of state-level regulations affect single-use products like ours. We actively track what is going on around the country to develop solutions and products suited for the ever-changing landscape.

How

does

a reusable take-out container system

work?

COLLECTION/ TRACKING

Customer gets token or credit in exchange for returning container WASHING

Containers

Customer exchanges token/credit for meal served in Veda™ Container

Customer returns used container to dish station or OZZI machine. Machine scans barcode and tracks collection.

It all starts with containers that are specifically designed for the rigors of reuse programs. Veda containers are NSF Certified to meet food protection and sanitation standards, and are ECOLAB ware tested up to 1,000 washes. Custom embossment and color options are available as well.

Collection

The best way to ensure high collection rates is to pair Veda containers with the OZZI collection machine – a “smart” collection receptacle that scans containers and credits the user via token or credit for their return. A less “techy” version of the machine called the “Drop “N Go” is available as well. Both come with a cart designed to help with wash logistics.

. Simply Reuzable.

Tracking

Every Veda container comes equipped with proprietary barcode tracking and collection technology created by our partner, OZZI, that integrates with leading campus meal plan systems like Atrium and C BORD.

Use Veda containers with existing dishware collection stations or get collection stats and tracking information with OZZI® collection machines.

Washing

CONTAINERS

Customer enjoys meal to-go outside, at the o ce, in class, in their room, etc.

Once Veda containers are collected, they are either washed onsite or transported to an o -site washing hub, typically via partnership with a “ware wash” service provider.

Reporting

When Veda containers are used with the OZZI machine, collection data is available free of charge and typically delivered on a monthly basis. Some programs have achieved as high as 97% collection rates!
