HAUTE COUTURE WEEK By Shannon Tanwani, Celebrity Stylist

T

he Fashion weeks happen all the time, but Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week is one of the must go to events of the year. One of the most exciting events, if you ask me. Paris being home to some of the best couture & design houses, its a week like no other. With designers like Ralph & Russo, Giambattista Valli, Guo Pei, Georges Chakra showcasing their ethereal almost fantasy-like collections — people just keep wanting more. And if you’re tired of the same ol’ same old, there are always & coming designers like Galia Lahav and Celia Kritharioti for something fresh and fun.

CELIA KRITHARIOTI

On behalf of Novelty Bride and as an upcoming stylist in Paris and Mumbai — I am thrilled to highlight some of my personal top runway shows this season. Organza overthrows and floor length trains cascading down the runway — designer duo Ralph & Russo (Tamara Ralph & Michael Russo) really know how to make an entrance. By far this show included one of the most feminine, subtly sexy yet strikingly bold masterpieces of the season. The powder puff cream color tones almost vanishing as the fuchsia pink, greens and yellows revealed themselves on the runway. The collection itself has been

GEORGES CHAKRA

described as overly feminine, yet strikingly empowering as the image of a strong women can be portrayed in more than one silhouette. From hand-painted kimonos, to the classic power suit silhouette to the vintage head scarf look — the 30s and their travels to the Asian city of lights really shines through this culturally diverse, highly detailed collection. Some may describe their collection as “effortlessly wild” whilst others will call it “plain-out wild” — Giambattista Valli’s couture collection was very much one of most talked about shows of the season. The wild, young & free spirit of the designs come to life not with the mundane monochromic

runway dresses but with the baby blues and pastel pink, free flowing trains that surface in-between. Stepping away from the high necks of last couture season, the design house has dropped it all off into their low-cut below the bust off shoulder silhouettes. Lastly, let’s not forget their effortlessly extravagant signature tulle ruffles that just come to life as soon as models make the slightest gesture. Hearts of nature, souls of gold — ethnicity being the core design aesthetic for SS18, Chinese Designer Guo Pei definitely has gone back to her roots - even literally. Guiding us through her cultural heritage with a bamboo woven gown — Pei’s inspirations are evidently one of Asian roots. Each flora-filled ensemble, almost without fail had that golden touch. In combination with gold, were larger than life blue & white silhouettes. The collection was a forest frenzy like no other, golden

GIAMBATTISTA VALLI

branches sprouting from dresses, headpieces the size of potted plants and a field of aesthetically pleasing florals everywhere. A surreal fragment of romanticism like no other and was definitely the highlight of fashion week.

Afternoon tea at the Ritz — don’t mind if I do…The new girl on the “Parisian couture” block, Celia Kritharioti decided to invite us all for a cuppa tea in her garden full of dresses and floral coated boots. As we enter Kritharioti’s wonderland, a surreal, chirpy sort of sound starts to play. The “Alice” here to take us down the rabbit hole was Brazilian model — Lais Ribeiro — with a lacy low back mini dress and knee high boots. While the designs reminiscent of Chanel’s transparent knee high boots — the collection itself was dramatic in its own way, shape and form — no tulle trains needed. The designers aesthetic itself revolves around confidence and uplifting spirits - as she put it “when a woman is zipping up a. Dress of mine, I want at the same time to elevate her spirit and confidence.”

Bringing forward their classy, dramatic yet minimal couture collection from last year, Georges Chakra leaves their pure whites and pale pink wedding-like gowns, for some scorching shades of orange contrasting it with ocean blue. The silhouettes in this collection are very modern, chic perfect for Parisian couture week. The details of this collection lay in the ruffles — on the arms, high necks, and one sided power shoulders. The silhouettes are not too dramatic, keeping the looks safe with some classy, minimal gowns which only helps to exaggerate the femininity, definitive nature of the (CONTINUED) designs.

OSSAI

A

s a girl, her hands learned from butterflies how to hold the most precious of nature’s work. As a woman, they fluttered across her creations with majesty in measure. OSSAI, a San Francisco-based haute couture fashion brand carried in the USA by prominent stores like Carolina Herrera, Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom, and internationally by high-end boutiques in Japan, Russia, S. Korea and Brazil to name a few. OSSAI was launched in 2009 and has quickly established itself through its unique designs, exclusivity and workmanship. Building on this success, OSSAI recently launched Little OSSAI to cater for the highend children’s wear segment at Level Kids, Dubai. Zalikha “Ossai” Safdari grew up in San Francisco to a family descending from Afghanistan’s last tribal monarchy. Her father worked in King Mohamad Zahir Shah’s government where he was the country’s co-chief architect. The Safdari’s migrated to the west in 1979 and settled in San Francisco’s Bay Area and they began resurrecting the rich, ancient and intricate culture they knew in a city that invited tolerance, peace and understanding. Zalikha looked up to her father who instilled in her values of grace, humility and virtue, and encouraged her to adorn her cultural heritage with the best she can attain from her surrounding. He encouraged her to pursue perfection by creating beauty for this world, both within and without. Her mom, the ever more dexterous parent taught her centuries’ old craftsmanship techniques that were passed down generations

in the family, from mother to daughter. As the youngest of siblings, Zalikha’s success attributed to many sources. For her being her faith, family, friends and foremost the endless efforts of her confidant. Growing up in San Francisco had a big influence on Zalikha. The city by the bay had an enchanting culture and a free spirit that encouraged radical self-expression through art, music and fashion. Augmenting this was a diverse culture that fed into Zalikha’s fascination with strong cultural movements from times near and far, like the fabulous 1920s, Victorian England and Belle Époque. In every tireless stitch, one can find the time devoted to make each OSSAI. OSSAI is whimsical. It is luxury. It is art. It is self-expression of an oriental heritage steeped in San Francisco’s diversity and influenced by cultural eras from times near and far. OSSAI designs in pursuit of perfection and to preserve centuries’ old craftsmanship techniques handed down generations. Every OSSAI is handmade. There is something about handmade that makes every OSSAI a piece of art. Is it the imperfection of our hands? The human story behind every piece? Or the rarity of the skill that we love? We don’t know, but what we know is that every OSSAI is made by the labor of our hands. Every OSSAI. Delicate and timeless, our OSSAIs are made to celebrate the moment but is not only for the moment. Your OSSAI carries the past, the present and the future. It is worn to make a statement of “I am.” Wear it. Cherish it. Forever.

RALPH & RUSSO

THE SUN SMART BRIDE BY STEPHANIE KLASSE, BEAUTY EDITOR At the approach of summer, I get a lot of questions on sunscreen and SPF, tanning, self-tanning and all types of skin care as people are spending time outside in the warm weather. There has also been a lot in the news about newly passed legislation in the USA that changes regulations involving various active ingredients in sunscreens. While preparing for the wedding, is especially important for the bride-to-be, as well as the bride on her wedding day. I want you to get a golden glow safely, if that’s what you want, and also avoid lifelong skin damage that can occur on the wedding day from the festivities. Is SPF important on my wedding day? Yes. YES YES YES. SPF is important every day of the year regardless of what you’re doing and if the sky is full sun or overcast. I really mean this. Exposure to the sun’s rays is the main component for aging in the skin and skin cancers. One sunburn can actually be the catalyst for skin cancer just as much as exposure over time. Think about your ideal wedding day. Think about all of the gorgeous outdoor locations for the ceremony, reception or pictures. Unless you are 100% covered by tents, shade or clothing, you absolutely should consider an SPF product to make sure you’re fully protected. Sand, water, snow and altitude are all factors that make UV exposure more intense as well, so if you plan a beach or mountain wedding, be extra vigilant. Will my makeup artist supply an SPF? Will it harm my makeup? This is a very valid question and something that should absolutely be discussed ahead of time. Summer weddings see more strapless and sleeveless dresses for sure. Ask your artist if she uses and SPF and if she helps with an SPF application head-to-toe (or on skin that will be exposed to the sun. What does the SPF number mean? Are you ready for some math? Each person has a different amount of time they can be in the sun before they burn. The SPF number tells you how many times longer you can be in the sun before you burn. If you’d burn in 10 minutes normally an SPF of 30 can give you 30 times longer. 10 x 30 = 300 minutes. Ultimately, most sunscreens should be reapplied every 1.5 - 2 hours. You can’t apply once and expect 300 minutes of guaranteed protection. Sweat, water and friction all shorten the amount of time a sunscreen will last as well. As an esthetician, my general rule is to use a minimum SPF of 30. Why are there such high SPF numbers if they need to be reapplied so often anyway? An SPF OF 15 blocks 94% of UV rays. An SPF of 30 blocks 97%.

126

An SPF of 50 blocks 98%. An SPF OF 100 blocks 99%. It’s really about a combination of how much of the UV rays are being blocked over what duration of time. It’s sun math. What does broad spectrum mean? There are three types of UV rays UVA, UVB and UVC. UVA and UVB are the ones that can reach us and a broad spectrum product can protect from both types. However, UVA rays are the ones that reach deeper in to our skin and cause aging effects and damage our cells and the ability to produce collagen and elastin. Why are there so many different active ingredients for sunscreen? How are they different? Basically, any ingredient that is meant to ‘do something’. There are physical UV blockers, which are metal oxides, most commonly titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, that physically keep the UV rays from getting to your skin. There are also chemical UV absorbers. This seems to be an ever changing list and not all are broad spectrum. This is why products tend to have a variety of different chemical absorbers. Some of these chemical absorbers and ingredients are banned in various countries because of long-term health concerns. For instance, the ban of the sale of certain sunscreens in Hawaii involves ingredients with proven negative effects on the reefs. These are chemical blockers such as Oxybenzone and Octinoxate. Metal Oxide sunscreens are always the most effective and safest SPF choice. I have personally seen various UV absorbers fail, aside from many possible unknown negative side-effects. People used to shy away from the Titanium and Zinc Oxide options, but the cosmetic industry has developed some amazing options for more finely milling the ingredients to reduce the white, lifeguard nose effect. It used to be thought that Metal Oxides were only physical blockers. It is now known that they get their broad spectrum power from both blocking and absorbing different UV rays.

THE BRONZE BRIDE BY STEPHANIE KLASSE BEAUTY EDITOR

II lovehavea sun-kissed a confession. I love skin. I love pale skin. I love dark skin. look. I love porcelain. I love it all! If you prefer a sun-kissed look, but aren’t a fan of the sun, how can a bride achieve a skin-safe glow on her wedding day? There are benefits to adding a glow to the skin before a wedding for sure.

apply a spray/airbrush sunless tanner. I spent years frustrated with brides showing up for their wedding makeup a strange orange color from a bad self-tanner. I learned how to apply airbrush sunless tanner so my brides would be taken care of properly. It’s well worth finding someone you trust and the results are stunning. There are so many ways to get a safe glow on your wedding day. SPF is must, but don’t be afraid to try some fun bronzers or sunless tanners if you need a boost of color or to even out tan lines. They work incredibly well.

What are my options for safely tanning? Really there are two safe options — topical bronzers and selftanners/sunless tanners. What’s the difference? Bronzers are totally topical and wash off and leave no tan behind. They can be in the form of lotions, oils, powders or aerosol sprays. Some claim to be transfer resistant, some have shimmer. The main thing to be aware of is the color, because the color of the bronzer when mixed with your actual skin shade and undertone will create the finished result for your skin. Second, you have to check if it’s going to transfer onto your dress for anything that you use on your body. Self-tanners are also known as sunless tanners. They are a product that is applied to the skin and actually causes a chemical reaction on the surface of the skin that leaves a tan effect. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is a sugar that is the active ingredient in these products. It makes the surface cells change color and simulates a tan, that fades as the skin exfoliates. They can also have a bronzer in them so you can have that instant tan and see where you’ve applied product. How do I use a bronzer or sunless tanner? Honestly, it’s all about the individual product and there are lots of new items all of the time. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for that particular product. Both types of products should be applied to clean, well-exfoliated and moisturized skin. Both types of products should be well-tested before the wedding in all sort of circumstances to avoid a wedding day mishap. While there are some great things you can get at the drugstore or speciality beauty store, when it comes to the sunless tanner, I always recommend that brides seek out a professional to hand

A Royal Affair PRINCE HARRY & MEGHAN MARKLE

B reaking the royal tradition, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle wed holding hands St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle on May

19th of 2018. The day of the wedding Meghan wore a Givenchy gown with Queen Mary’s diamond bandeau tiara and was accompanied by Prince Charles, who walked her down the aisle. Harry met Markle on a blind date in London, set up by Londonbased Ralph Lauren PR director Violet von Westenholz. Their courtship was maintained through a long-distance relationship, and the rest is now royal history! Mindy Weiss

: Making Dreams Come True! By Amy Rivers

W

ant your wedding to be both elegant and simply amazing? Mindy Weiss is the woman for you. Since the 1990s, Mindy has been creating unforgettable wedding experiences, from the intimate gathering to more extravagant affairs: always luxurious and always customized to give her brides the wedding of their dreams. Mindy and her team have been behind some of the hottest celebrity weddings, from Ciara & Russell Wilson to Ellen DeGeneres & Portia DeRossi. Here’s what Mindy had to say about weddings: NB: When you work with a bride, what do you hope to achieve for them? MW: I just want to bring their vision to life. I like to say that we make dreams come true! NB: What do you love about wedding planning? MW: I simply love being creative. Designing weddings and events allows me to be creative in a different way, every day. NB: What are some of your favorite wedding experiences? MW: Seeing the bride and groom’s face when they first walk into the room and take everything in is the best part of any wedding. Aside from that, I loved planning my son’s wedding. Not only was it just so personal to me, but we did a lot of unique things — like a beer garden! NB: What makes a wedding extraordinary with your designs? MW: Ha, you’ll have to ask my brides that! But I think my team and I really like to think outside of the box when it comes to everything from the venue and design to the small details. It’s likely that when you attend one of our weddings, you’ll see something you’ve never seen before.

groom go a long way. Make efforts to organize optional activities for your guests so they feel like they’re being taken care of. Depending on your location, things like a wine tasting, hiking or even a golf tournament can give guests a chance to mingle and bond. No need to pick up the tab for these events, just be sure communicate any associated costs. NB: How do you personalize the planning experience to each individual bride? MW: I like to take inspiration from the couple’s love story to really personalize the event. If they were engaged in Italy for example, I might suggest incorporating some Italian elements into the big day. NB: What would you like to see more of in the future? MW: Color! I love when couples are open to bold colors for their décor. NB: What would you like to see less of in the upcoming seasons? MW: I’m a little over the formal, seated dinners at the reception. I love designing lounge areas with food stations to keep things a little more casual and encourage guest interaction. Of course, if the couple’s vision involves that formality, then I’m all for it. NB: What is the most important piece of advice you could give any bride in planning her wedding? MW: Stay true to yourself and your love story. Trends come and go, so don’t get too caught up in what’s “in.”

NB: What do you love most about planning bridal and baby showers? MW: There’s a lot of opportunity to do something fun and outside of the norm. Clients are little more willing to go whimsical. NB: What are the most important elements to a destination wedding? MW: It’s really important to make your guests feel at home. Even small details like a welcome bag with a note from the bride and

An Engagement Story

“We were talking and laughing all night that we couldn’t wait to see each other again. John ended up asking me out immediately the next day,” related Paulina. From then on, John and Paulina were inseparable.

our way to go out to dinner to celebrate our anniversary but John surprised me with a key to a private pier in La Jolla Shores beach. We walked on the pier completely alone during the most beautiful sunset. It was a special and intimate setting neither of us will ever forget. When we got to the end of the pier, John got down on one knee with THE ring, told me I was the love of his life and couldn’t see his future without me. When he asked me to marry him I was tearful and overjoyed, I screamed ‘YES!”

In the two years of their relationship, they shared their passion for the value of their close families, fell deeply in love and moved into their new home together.

John and Paulina chose to do their engagement photos in Maui, HI because the island was where they spent holidays with family and created special memories.

John and Paulina went on adventurous trips to Barcelona, Costa Rica, Peru, Paris, Mexico, Italy and Fiji. They fell in love with the art of travel, while visiting La Jolla, CA and Maui, HI during numerous trips throughout the year.

Exactly one year after the proposal, John and Paulina were set to marry on Saturday, September 14th in La Jolla, CA. The wedding date was the three year anniversary from the very first day they met. John and Paulina chose the perfect wedding venue for them, it was a grand house with an ocean view of the private pier John proposed.

It was a rainy Tuesday evening in Seattle when John met Paulina at a popular French cuisine restaurant. It was a place they both visited before but never once crossed paths, until the day they met on September 14th.

Two years after the day John and Paulina first met, John proposed on September 14th in La Jolla. “We were on

W HOTEL A RESORT IN GOA BY SEASON HURD

A beautiful destination for a wedding or honeymoon. When researching Goa one frequently encounters the word “kaleidoscope.” This is likely because calling it a cultural melting pot alone would betray the eclectic – and sometimes psychedelic – history of art, architecture and fashion. For centuries this area of the Indian subcontinent has been a place where the status quo is bucked and brilliant juxtapositions emerge. The haute bohème destination of yesteryear is still an evolving merger of ideas and peoples. Inspired by the unique qualities of the area, the W Goa is the physical manifestation of this mindset. A stunning resort that captures the tenets of the Goan vibe and spins them into a breathtaking display of color, shape, and movement for its guests.

The W Hotel occupies space on Vagator Beach with sweeping views of the Arabian Sea on the west coast of India. The property is surrounded by a patchwork of white sand beaches, jungles and intriguing historical buildings in Indian, Portuguese, and Ottoman styles. Whether you want relaxing spa treatments, eco-adventures, a cultural sojourn, or an epic night on the town – Goa’s got it. But the W Hotel isn’t resting on the laurels of stellar location and striking interior design. The customer service and integrated entertainment culture means that a stay there is an all-inclusive hit for wedding getaways. Start the celebration with a bridal party bash. Primping during the day with spa treatments

and partaking in trance parties at night. You can even enjoy W’s “Hangover Brunch” so your epic celebration doesn’t stop with the rise of a new day. Weddings at the W Goa include a choice of several amazing venues ranging from chic indoor affairs to beachfront celebrations. But perhaps the most unique option is the “Backyard,” a lush green landscape with a stunning view of a 500-year-old Portuguese fort. Planning a destination wedding can be daunting, but not with the assistance and knowledge of the W Goa’s in-house wedding specialist. You can rest assured every detail of your day will be as deliciously unique and stylish as the property itself. And if you should want for anything during
