Article: Connected to Europe – building the infrastructure megaproject Rail Baltica

In recent years, the Baltic countries have taken big leaps with digitalization in many fields. Estonia, for example, is celebrated as the most advanced digital society in the world, thanks to its highly digital government services. As many of the local construction contractors also work in Finland, the next logical and attractive step for them is to start using advanced Nordic infra construction technology. So far, the user feedback has been very positive – the Finnish Xsite is reliable and works in extreme conditions.

Tõnis Vään, Managing Director of Infratugi OÜ, the official Xsite Reseller in Estonia, is pleased to offer reliable Nordic digital civil engineering solutions on the Estonian market.

“I have represented Xsite machine control systems in Estonia since 2021. Currently, we have dozens of systems working around the country, from big infra construction sites to the most common rural ones”, he tells.

“Xsite machine control systems can be selected based on needs. In Estonia, the most common system at the moment is full Xsite PRO 3D for excavator with Landnova X software, 90% of all customers are using this. There are also some Xsite PRO 2D systems for excavator with EL3 laser receivers, which can be easily upgraded to full Xsite 3D systems”, Vään tells.

“When a customer decides to upgrade their Xsite PRO 2D to full Xsite PRO 3D system, it’s easy: there’s no need to change any 2D hardware components – just add extra 3D hardware, licenses and a software upgrade”, Vään tells.

“Also, Xsite systems are very logical and simple to use. You don’t need to be an engineer or to have a technical education, to be able to use the system in a few minutes”, he adds.

“Xsite systems are very logical and simple to use. You don’t need to be an engineer or to have a technical education, to be able to use the system in a few minutes”.

“If machine operator is a beginner and starts to use Xsite, a remote-control tool provides extra comfort. It makes it possible for the local dealer and service provider to support and help them directly on the system screen”, Vään tells.

Xsite system allows the use of large background drawings

“Xsite’s software makes possible to use large background drawings. This is good when it’s necessary to get a better overview of an object. If the operator needs to use active lines, points and objects, it’s wise to use very detailed drawings”, Vään says.

“The main thing is that the machine operator typically wants a relatively small screen with maximum information. This means that the drawings and models loaded into machine’s control system must be “clean” and as easy to read as possible. Xsite provides just that”, Vään says.

“According to feedback, Xsite’s software is compatible with most common file formats in the industry. There is no need to use any specific ones, and this saves a lot of time and effort”, Vään tells.

Xsite system also supports various Autodesk softwares and cloud services, including Xsite MANAGE cloud service and Infrakit.

“In my opinion, one of the most important developments in infrastructure is the use of cloud services”, Vään says.

“It is not efficient to use USB sticks on sites to load projects into machines 3D systems, especially if we are talking about large sites, with many machines and long distances. Cloud service usage can be on very different levels. I definitely recommend using it as minimum for loading construction drawings and models to machines”, Vään says.

Constructing Rail Baltica - Estonia’s future connection to Europe

In September 2024, Verston Eesti OÜ, the Estonian part of Verston Group and Europe’s leading sustainable infrastructure construction and maintenance company, won their fourth tender for a section of Rail Baltica– this time for a route between Soodevahe and Kangru in Rae Parish. The tender was a joint bid together with engineering company Järelpinge Inseneribüroo OÜ.

This latest rail section is one of the most unique sections of the route in terms of construction – it is the only part of the railway where the train will travel in a trench that varies in width from 55 to 75 meters and runs up to 10 meters below ground level for a total of five kilometers.

The trench resembles the Lasnamäe canal, with natural limestone walls rising on both sides of the track. The railway also passes under Põrguvälja Road, where Verston already built technical systems and a viaduct in November. Completing this part of Rail Baltica will require very close cooperation between all parties involved.

A modern way of working together in an infrastructure project

Open Building Information Modelling (openBIM) is a way of working together in an infrastructure construction project. It includes open standards and a workflow for creating and managing all the information on a construction project. In a fully digitalized model-based construction the work can be conducted together in real-time by the infrastructure designer, work machine operator, the worksite manager and project management. This requires the use of openBIM, 3D machine control system and cloud service.

Miina Karafin is the Head of Digitalization and BIM at Verston Eesti OÜ.

“Using BIM models in large-scale infrastructure projects is essential for ensuring data consistency, optimizing workflows and enhancing collaboration among stakeholders. High-quality data shared from design to construction— even down to each machine on-site—unlocks new opportunities in the sector. With 3D data, and the use of modern technologies, we can easily validate as-built works, significantly improving the accuracy of planning and execution.”

Currently, there are four Verston’s excavators using Xsite PRO 3D machine control systems at Rail Baltica construction site. The interoperability between a machine control system and cloud service enables an efficient infra construction project.

When it comes to big projects, like Rail Baltica, it’s important that the machine operator can see and understand complex drawings quickly and easily.

“With Xsite, the operator can fully focus on their work”, Vään says.

“When using modern digital tools the work goes faster and becomes more sustainable. This is very important for both small and major infrastructure builders”, Vään concludes.

Novatron’s drilling navigation system takes site safety to a new level in the mining industry

For more than thirty years, Finlandbased Novatron has been developing machine control systems and software for measurement, geospatial, mapping and planning needs.

From easy-to-use equipment and systems to ensuring the safety of customers’ sites, safety is a major theme for Novatron. In addition, advanced sensor technology and digital site data transmission provide sustainable working models that allow easy verification of the quality of work. Mining contractors can use the drilling navigation system to optimise the outcome of open-pit mining with precise surface drilling.

VP Product, Teemu Virtanen is responsible for Novatron’s product and system offering. The company’s mining solutions focus on three phases of open pit mining: drill schematic and surface design with 3D modelling software, data model-based earthworks and safe open pit mining with drilling navigation. Novatron’s digital workflow and machine control solutions help to improve efficiency, reduce safety risks and avoid wasting mineral resources.

”With Novatron’s Xsite® DRILL RD (Remote Display) drilling navigation system, we introduced a new product that allows the cabless surface drill to be navigated to the correct position. The device allows the operator to achieve the correct drilling angles and depths easily and safely,” says Virtanen.

The system pays for itself quickly

”By getting the holes in the right place, there is no need for re-breaking and loading is improved. The drilling speed also improves, and costs are reduced as a result,” Virtanen continues.

The equipment has been developed in cooperation with drill manufacturers, listening to end users. Feedback from users is that professionals who have been drilling for decades find the demanding work so efficient that it is fun.

This efficiency is further enhanced by the wide usability of the solution. Novatron always interfaces on the equipment manufacturer’s terms.

“Novatron’s drilling systems are compatible with most surface drills, including Furukawa, Sandvik and Epiroc models,” says Virtanen.

Novatron components are also reliable in a variety of applications. Components developed for professional use have been tested on excavators and demanding infrastructure projects in the Nordic countries. Novatron’s solid understanding of the industry’s requirements is reflected in its installation design: placing GNSS antennas at the rear of the drill rig reduces vibration in the system and is the best way to achieve a reliable system.

Article: Kjell Foss drills with precision to create barriers to stop landslides

The Xsite® DRILL RD by Novatron is a satellite-based drilling and hole navigation system that facilitates precise and efficient drilling operations using cabinless surface drills. Kjell Foss, a Norwegian company specializing in blasting and drilling services, works in demanding conditions that put the capabilities of the Xsite® DRILL RD to the test.

Kjell Foss, which has around 115 employees, operates throughout Norway. The company has a landslide prevention project along National Road 80 in Bodø. The goal is to remove around 30,000 cubic meters of solid rock to eliminate the risk of landslides in the area. Anders Sætre Torp, Project Manager and Blasting Manager for Kjell Foss, says the company chose Novatron’s solution for the project due the practical considerations on the site.

– We chose the Xsite DRILL RD system due to the project’s complexity and the many contour lines that need to be drilled with precision to create barriers to stop landslides, Torp explains.

“We chose the Xsite DRILL RD system due to the project’s complexity and the many contour lines that need to be drilled with precision to create barriers to stop landslides”

Anders Sætre Torp, Project and Blasting Manager for Kjell Foss

Contour blasting is used for bench, trench, and tunnel blasting. This reduces the cracking of the remaining rock surface, thereby reducing overburden and the need for reinforcement and creating an aesthetically pleasing surface. As an alternative to contour blasting, seam drilling can be used, which involves uncharged boreholes in a line with small hole spacing. The Xsite DRILL RD enables the precise and effective manipulation of these areas.

Working with Xsite DRILL RD. The goal is to remove around 30,000 cubic meters of solid rock to eliminate the risk of landslides in the Bodø area.

Adding to the tools of the trade

The Xsite DRILL RD’s performance is enhanced by various advanced features. The impressive feature set is not just for show, either, as it translates into a number of practical, real-world advantages.

Surface models, design models, and drill plans can be wirelessly uploaded to the system or created on-site using the integrated Drill Plan Wizard. The system also includes a reach indicator to determine the optimal positioning of the equipment quickly. Furthermore, the versatile drilling view provides real-time metrics, such as speed and penetration rates, while the auto-stop function ensures better safety and precision.

The system’s operation panel is a reliable and durable piece of equipment offering an intuitive interface for the operator. Meanwhile, the system has broad support for different file formats and industry-standard correction formats. Data can be transferred via USB, third-party services, or the secure Xsite MANAGE cloud service.

Christoffer Bodum works as a drill rig operator for Kjell Foss. Using the Xsite DRILL RD system on the job, he appreciates the way it allows a quick and good overview of the surface or contour line being worked on. He also points to the seamless documentation of the project, which frees him to focus on his main task: drilling as efficiently as possible and finding the best way to do it.

– What I really like is that you can see the live data from the drilling while you drill, and it gets documented directly into the system, he says, summing up his experience.

A perfect match

Blasting work manages one of the greatest risks in a project, requiring great precision and control from any equipment used when executing blasting work. Accurate documentation is also essential, as following regulations and plans reduces the risks inherent in this type of work. This ensures the safety of everyone involved and leads to the perfect result when carrying out the job. Additionally, Torp notes the Xsite DRILL RD’s smooth integration with systems already in place on the drilling rig before the installation of Novatron’s solution.

It is very important to control and document all executions. We also integrate with Blast Manager, our quality and blasting reporting systems, to document everything we do. Everything must be carefully documented in the smallest detail.

Torp goes on to add the increased precision and accuracy of drilling patterns and drilling depth to the list of practical benefits from installing the solution on the company’s drill rigs.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to achieving high performance without compromising safety, and the Xsite DRILL RD enables Kjell Foss to excel in both. From Torp’s point of view, this makes the system too good to pass up for those in the industry looking for a way to take their operations to the next level.

– We had high expectations for the collaboration with Novatron, and for us overall, they have been the best partner for GPS rig systems.

Hella Maskin AS is Xsite® reseller in Norway, specializing in construction technology, machine control, scales, hand-held measuring equipment, data flow and documentation. They serve Kjell Foss locally and are dedicated to delivering advanced solutions for demanding infrastructure projects.

”The implementation of 3D-Win was a turning point for us, both for the calculation of quotations and later for the construction sites. The visualization of different work phases was made much easier and mass inspections were possible with just one click of a button. It is also much easier to pass on information from the tender calculation to the construction sites. 3D-Win paid for itself already in the first project.”

Article: Designing and surveying foundations for wind farms

Building a wind farm requires careful work and advanced tools to maximize energy efficiency and preserve natural values. Novatron’s 3D-Win™ infra software and the Xsite® PAD solve the challenge.

3D-Win is software for generating and manipulating measurement and design data. Its versatile inspection, editing, and calculation capabilities make it a tool for many professionals. The Xsite product family includes high-quality tools for measurement personnel, site managers, and machine operators.

The Xsite PAD measurement device ensures precise and efficient data collection shared with site management and workers, reducing downtime in construction projects. At the Oosinselkä’s work site, 39 wind turbines are being installed to produce renewable energy for over 100,000 homes.

Xsite PAD and 3D-Win in Action at Oosinselkä

Wind Farm

Novatron visited the Oosinselkä wind farm park in Eurajoki, Southern Finland, where construction company Konetyö Koskimäki has built the foundations for thirteen windmills. During the summer of 2024, 28 windmills with 143/139.5 m pole-tops will be assembled on these foundations.

Lauri Haukijärvi, a surveyor at Konetyö Koskimäki, designed the models for Oosinselkä with 3D-Win modeling software. Haukijärvi has worked at Koskimäki for eight years. He learned to use 3D-Win software entirely on his own.

I haven’t done much digging with an excavator, so I’ve never used this kind of 3D modeling device before, but I’ve learned how to use the PAD quickly. And now, after showing it to a few excavator operators over the years, they’ve got the hang of it too. The interface is the same for both products.

- Lauri Haukijärvi, Surveyor, Konetyö Koskimäki Oy

In addition to his current tasks, Haukijärvi sometimes drives an excavator, a dumper, and a road roller. He uses a Novatron Xsite PAD and a laptop as standard equipment to view the measurement points in more detail with 3D-Win.

“I have no formal training in surveying and have not used similar software. You’ll find a new button almost daily, but you can always call for help or read the instructions manual to find what it does,” says Haukimäki.

The 3D-Win software and Xsite PAD used together on-site allow for accurate terrain modeling and data management. Konetyö Koskimäki, a contractor at the Oosinselkä wind farm, chose both products to upgrade their workflow and open new project possibilities.

Integrating with Xsite PAD: A GameChanger for Efficiency

The joint use of Xsite PAD and 3D-Win was a natural decision for Konetyö Koskimäki as part of their workflow development. The first machine control system was installed on the company’s excavator 8-9 years ago. Today, machine control systems can be found on nine excavators.

When asked about the PAD’s best feature, Haukijärvi answered quickly: remote support. After a laugh, he added the ease of its use.

“I haven’t done much digging with an excavator, so I’ve never used this kind of 3D modeling device before, but I’ve learned how to use the PAD quickly. And now, after showing it to a few excavator operators over the years, they’ve got the hang of it too. The interface is the same for the machine control system and the PAD”, Haukijärvi adds.

At the Oosinselkä, Haukijärvi used the PAD to mark removable trees, for example, after which the excavator operators strip the topsoil. Haukijärvi has occasionally gone out to mark intermediate surfaces or rocks, which have eventually been excavated out of the way. Additional modifications can be easily made to the designed models using 3D-Win if needed.

Remote Support Ensuring Smooth Operations on Site

Haukijärvi repeatedly points out the importance of Novatron’s remote support, which provides comprehensive assistance for machine control systems, surveying equipment, and 3D-Win software. Novatron’s remote support includes remote troubleshooting, repair, and training. The service minimizes downtime and maintenance visits to the site.

Especially in supporting the use of 3D-Win software, Haukijärvi feels that he has received a lot of comprehensive knowledge and support for modeling and surveying.

“There has never been a problem that hasn’t been easily solved. You can always ask for help, and Novatron’s one-of-a-kind customer service does everything they can to minimize our downtime ”, Haukijärvi continues.

Article: European Innovation and Leadership - Novatron took machine control to the next level

Over the past 30 years, Novatron’s machine control systems have evolved significantly.

A major breakthrough occurred in the early 2000s when the company introduced the first 3D machine control system featuring a graphical user interface.

Novatron’s machine control system, now known as Xsite, was a groundbreaking innovation and a leader in its field, setting an example that many competitors have since followed.

Mikko Vesanen began working at Novatron in the early 2000s. His responsibilities at the time involved developing mechatronic systems—devices that combine robotics, intelligent sensors, and microprocessors. Now serving as the Director of Software Pro ducts, Vesanen recalls: “I can confidently say that in the early 2000s, we had the first 3D machine control system with a graphical user interface, which already operated with the Windows-based 3D-Win modeling tool.” Since no similar systems existed at the time, Novatron, with a team of fewer than 10 people, had to develop everything from scratch, including the components.

“We are a unique company because we create everything from the ground up in-house,” Vesanen adds.

“Our experts’ deep understanding of positioning technology and the kinematic models of machinery has been a key factor in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our sensors

and software

When designing high-quality sensors, many things must be taken into account, such as the vibration of work machines and large temperature fluctuations. Novatron’s new G3 sensors are eight times more efficient than their predecessors, the G2 sensors.

The harsh Nordic climate pushed innovation forward.

Many things need to be taken into account when designing high-quality sensors, such as vibrations from machinery and large temperature fluctuations. Novatron’s new G3 sensors are ten times more efficient than their predecessor, the G2 sensors.

Construction conditions in the Nordic countries are significantly more challenging than in other parts of Europe. In Finnish and Nordic construction, factors like rock cuts, the effects of frost, and complex road and tunnel structures demand more from modeling and machine control systems. The components developed by Novatron had to withstand the harsh working conditions and vibrations from machinery, as early trials in Norway demonstrated. Vesanen notes: “Developing the components for machine control systems was not an easy task. Among other things, the product components had to endure machine-induced vibrations and climate variations, while still providing centimeter-level accuracy.” The concept of these types of components and technology might never have been developed in a country where the terrain is mostly sand.

Mikko Kipinoinen, Novatron’s VP of Research and Development, adds: “In product development, we focus particularly on system durability, reliability, and user-friendliness, because the systems are used in environments where errors can lead to serious consequences. Quality is a key factor at every stage, and the systems undergo comprehensive testing in various conditions to ensure they can withstand demanding field environments. The Nordic setting ensures that the system is tested in the most challenging conditions.”

Novatron’s components strongly reflect their European origins. Only a small portion of the components come

from elsewhere, such as the United States. Most of the critical innovations, like mechanical parts, are designed at Novatron and manufactured either in-house or by the strategic partners in Europe. This ensures consistent product quality and shorter delivery times, which is crucial when introducing new solutions into production.

Safe and sustainable pioneering work

Novatron’s IMU sensors have always played a key role in the system’s efficiency. From the beginning, the company has prioritized designing and manufacturing components in-house in Finland. Locally produced components and assembly allow for quick responses and solutions to problems, which is crucial in an already fast-paced customer environment.

Jesse Kettunen, Head of Machine Control Hardware Development, highlights the collaboration between Novatron and universities in the development and testing of sensors. “We have actively worked with institutions like Tampere University of Technology. During the development of the G3 sensor, tests conducted with the university showed that the sensors maintained high accuracy during fast movements and sudden stops, with latency (the round-trip delay of data) remaining under 10 ms, even in varying conditions.”

One significant technological innovation Kettunen highlights is the shift from analog to digital sensors. “In our current sensor, we chose digital over analog sensors, which allows for better development of filters and algorithms and frees up bandwidth for the microcontroller’s performance,” Kettunen explains. This decision enhances the sensor’s performance and helps make the system smarter and more efficient. For the user, this translates to increased system reliability.

“Our experts’ deep understanding of positioning technology and the kinematic models of machinery has been a key factor in ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of our sensors and software,” adds Kipinoinen.

High-quality service supports high-quality products

Novatron’s strength lies not only in its technology but also in its deep understanding of customer need and it’s effective use of feedback in product development.

“Customer feedback and user experiences have played a central role in the continued development of both software and mechatronics. Product managers and owners are in constant contact with customers,” Kipinoinen explains. As part of Novatron’s quality system, feedback is also regularly collected through remote support customer satisfaction surveys.

In developing its products, Novatron works closely with test operators to quickly gather improvement suggestions and feedback. “From a mechatronics perspective, we’re agile. If an issue arises in the field, we can fix it quickly and implement changes in the next release within a week,” Vesanen adds.

According to Vesanen, customer feedback has significantly decreased over time as the company has accumulated years of knowledge about all possible scenarios and issues. Understanding customer needs has helped shape products to be more user-friendly, and direct connections to worksites remain a vital part of product development.

Future Integrations and Technology Compatibility – European Expertise as a Competitive Advantage

Novatron’s sensors support common data transfer protocols, allowing for easy integration into partner applications and creating a seamless and efficient workflow on construction sites. From the start, Novatron’s values and operating philosophy have emphasized open interfaces, enabling customer-centric solutions and driving industry development. Unlike many competitors, the Finnish Novatron believes in a win-win strategy with its customers and end users.

“Finns are known globally for their integrity and straightforwardness,” Kipinoinen notes.

Novatron is actively involved in defining international ISO/ DTS 1514-4.2 standard. For example, the company plays a key role in promoting the use of data models in construction site processes.
