Pioneering Smiles and Building Community, One Patient at a Time

In the heart of Northern Virginia’s ever-evolving landscape, nestled among the winding streets of McLean’s charming neighborhoods, lives a man who has not only reshaped smiles—but also, in many ways, reshaped lives. Dr. Geith Kallas, an award-winning cosmetic dentist with over 30 years of experience in advanced smile design, is far more than a leading figure in modern dentistry. He is a devoted family man, a trusted neighbor, and a community member whose roots run deep in the fabric of McLean.

A pioneer in his field, Dr. Kallas is known for blending clinical excellence with compassionate care—a philosophy shaped by a lifetime of learning, personal experience, and an unwavering commitment to his patients. But behind the accolades and dental innovations is a story grounded in family, faith, and community.

Dr. Kallas and his wife, Mirna, moved to McLean in 2013, drawn to the area’s small-town charm and big-city sophistication. “We were living in Tysons when I started my practice back in 1998,” he recalls. “I had previously practiced in Washington, D.C., and from my o ice window, I watched Tysons Corner transform into a bustling hub of opportunity. That’s when I knew it was time to grow—and eventually, to make McLean our home.”

After touring nearly every new construction in the Woodlea Mill neighborhood, Dr. Kallas knew they had found the right place to raise a family. “McLean is ideal. It’s safe, beautiful, close to the best shopping, and just a short drive from D.C.,” he says. “It o ered everything we needed for both our personal and professional lives.”

Married since 1997, Dr. Kallas credits his wife, Mirna, as the cornerstone of their family life. A pharmacist by profession and a dedicated mother by calling, Mirna's warmth and generosity have made their home a welcoming space for neighbors, friends, and

the broader community. “Mirna is the heartbeat of our home,” Dr. Kallas says with pride. “She brings people together—whether it's for school events, receptions, or holiday gatherings.”

Together, they raised two sons—John and Richie—who embody their parents’ values of hard work, education, and kindness. Both boys attended Green Hedges for elementary and middle school, then continued on to Flint Hill for high school. John, the eldest, is currently pursuing a law degree at George Washington University and is on track to graduate in 2027. Watching his dedication and discipline has been incredibly rewarding. Richie, who is passionate about healthcare, is studying at the University of Miami and is expected to graduate in 2026. He hopes to follow in his father's footsteps and become a dentist.

“Watching our boys grow into such driven, thoughtful young men has been the greatest joy of our lives,” says Dr. Kallas. “Family is everything to us.”

SINCE I WAS A LITTLE BOY, MY MOTHER TAUGHT ME THAT HARD WORK WILL BRING GREAT LUCK.
-DR. GEITH J. KALLAS

For the Kallas family, McLean is more than a place to live—it’s a way of life. Their calendar has long been filled with local traditions like McLean Day and the Viva Vienna festival, outdoor escapes to Great Falls Park, and spirited soccer matches at Spring Hill Rec Center. “When our boys were young, I even had the pleasure of coaching their McLean Soccer team,” Dr. Kallas recalls. “Those moments strengthened our bond as a family and deepened our connection to the community.”

Today, they continue to enjoy everything McLean o ers—from quiet garden afternoons and poolside chats to dining and shopping at Tysons Galleria. “We love it when the boys come home from college and we get to spend quality time together,” he shares.

“Those are the moments that matter most.”

Dr. Kallas earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDS) degree in 1989 and trained at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute (LVI) for Advanced Dental Studies. From a young age, his mother instilled

in him the dream of becoming a doctor—an aspiration that guided his path and ultimately shaped his career. His professional journey has spanned decades, and his impact is felt throughout Northern Virginia. What began as a solo practice in Tysons has now grown into a network of dental centers in Fairfax, Bailey’s Crossroads, Woodbridge, Leesburg, and Falls Church.

Yet his mission remains deeply personal.

“There’s nothing like the moment when a patient sees their new smile for the first time,” he says. “It’s transformative. It restores more than just teeth—it restores confidence and joy.”

Dr. Kallas’ approach to dentistry is grounded in empathy, innovation, and excellence. Influenced by his early clinical experiences at Howard University and D.C. General Hospital, he learned firsthand the importance of cultural sensitivity and accessible care. “I was shaped by the diversity and humanity of that experience,” he explains. “It taught me to treat every patient with respect and compassion.”

Today, Dr. Kallas leads a team of associate dentists and specialists, mentoring the next generation with the same care and integrity he brings to his patients. He believes in interdisciplinary care, where general dentists collaborate closely with specialists for optimal outcomes. “Best practices require a team approach,” he a irms. “That’s why we’ve built a model where everything is connected under one roof.”

His dental centers operate on a culture of excellence, guided by systems that ensure consistency, trust, and what he calls “miraculous customer satisfaction.” “We treat every patient like royalty,” Dr. Kallas says—not as a marketing slogan, but as a heartfelt standard.

In addition to providing clinical care, he speaks, writes, and enjoys being a guest on dental industry podcasts—sharing knowledge, elevating the profession, and inspiring others to lead with purpose.

D.C. area by fostering friendship and cultural connection. Their sons have also embraced this family value. John is passionate about advocating for immigrant communities. He leads Know Your Rights trainings, organizes educational workshops, and contributes to the GW Law Property Review. Richie, inspired by his father’s example, founded Smiles for All, a nonprofit that connects dental professionals with individuals in need of care. The Kallas family remains united in their belief in lifting others up and creating a sense of belonging wherever they go.

As Dr. Kallas reflects on a career spanning more than 30 years, he remains grounded in the belief that his work is more than just medicine—it’s a calling. “Dentistry has made me feel the most human,” he says. “It’s given me a purpose, a platform, and a way to connect deeply with people.”

Integrated

And in McLean, he has found the perfect place to continue that journey. From the community soccer fields to the most advanced dental clinics, Dr. Kallas is shaping lives with every smile he restores—and proving, one patient at a time, that care, compassion, and community go hand in hand.

Summer Switch: Transitioning Your Skincare for the Season

As we step into the summer months, it’s time to reevaluate your skincare wardrobe. Just like we trade our coats for linen, our skin needs lighter, breathable formulations to thrive in warmer weather. Rich creams and heavy oils that served us well in winter can now feel su ocating, leading to congestion and dullness. Start by swapping out dense moisturizers for gel-based or water-light hydrators that o er deep moisture without the weight. Look for serums rich in hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to keep your skin plump and protected from environmental stressors. SPF, of course, is nonnegotiable—choose one that feels luxurious enough to wear daily.

Summer is also a great time to embrace gentle exfoliation to clear away buildup from sunscreen, sweat, and travel. The goal isn’t to strip your skin, but to keep it fresh, balanced, and radiant.

PRO TIP: Keep a hydrating facial mist in your bag to refresh your skin throughout the day. A classic like Evian Spray Mist is perfect for a quick cooling boost without disrupting makeup.

her to help us understand how this advanced technology is transforming dental experiences for kids, whether it involves fillings, gum disease, or frenectomies.

Q: WHAT DOES GETTING A LASER FILLING INVOLVE?

Dr. Jaju: A laser filling uses a special dental laser instead of a conventional drill to treat cavities. At Smile Wonders, we utilize the Waterlase by Biolase, which is an all-tissue laser e ective on both hard tissues like teeth and bone, as well as soft tissues such as gums, lips, and tongues. Its precision allows for the removal of only the decayed portion of the tooth, preserving more of the natural tooth structure compared to a traditional drill. This makes the process quicker, more precise, and significantly more comfortable than what many adults remember from their own childhood dental visits.

id you know that it was possible to get no-shot, no-pain laser fillings and frenectomies right here in Northern Virginia?

The use of lasers in dentistry has revolutionized the landscape of pediatric care. But, it may also bring up questions about what laser dentistry is and how it compares to traditional methods. As our area's expert contributor and educator in this very topic, we spoke with Dr. Rishita Jaju of Smile Wonders in Reston, VA. We asked

A significant advantage is that we often don't need to use needles or numbing shots. This means no numb lips or drooling afterward, and children can typically return to school or their activities immediately. Additionally, fillings in di erent areas of the mouth can often be completed in the same visit.

Q: ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LASERS USED IN DENTISTRY?

Dr. Jaju: Yes, there are various types of dental lasers. It's a good idea to ask your dentist about the type they use, how it functions, and whether it's suitable for both teeth and gums. Some practices use basic diode lasers, which work by generating heat. While they can be useful for certain soft tissue procedures, they might cause charring or a

slight odor. Other o ices may use CO2 lasers, which can also work on gums and teeth, but not all. At Smile Wonders, we opted for the Waterlase because it's gentle and biocompatible with oral tissues, using a mild cooling mist to prevent heat buildup and damage to surrounding structures.

Q: CAN LASERS EFFECTIVELY HELP WITH GUM DISEASE OR INFLAMMATION IN CHILDREN?

Dr. Jaju: Absolutely. Lasers can gently reduce bacteria beneath the gums and treat inflammation, which is particularly beneficial for children with braces or medical conditions that make thorough brushing more challenging. If food becomes trapped near erupting teeth, causing swelling or discomfort, the laser can quickly and painlessly resolve the issue.

Q: ARE LASERS TRULY BETTER FOR FRENECTOMIES, OR IS THAT JUST MARKETING?

Dr. Jaju: Lasers, especially the Waterlase, can make frenectomies safer and more precise. Unlike traditional scissors, which rely on estimation, the laser removes tissue in very thin layers. This accuracy helps ensure that the cut is neither too deep nor too shallow, leading to better outcomes.

Q: WHY AREN’T LASERS MORE COMMONLY USED BY DENTISTS?

Dr. Jaju: Laser dentistry requires specialized training that is not yet a standard part of dental school curriculums. Dentists need to invest in the equipment and pursue additional training independently. The positive trend is that more dental schools are beginning to o er laser dentistry electives, indicating growth in the field.

This is just a glimpse of how far modern dentistry has come in the last couple of decades. Come experience the magical laser dentistry and find out why kids love us and parents trust us! Call us today!

A Powerful Message of Self-Acceptance BEYOND POP CULTURE:

Movies have long held the power to entertain while also delivering timely reality checks. They reflect our hopes, fears, and identities— often revealing truths about ourselves we’ve yet to confront. Filmmaker Mari Robinson understands this power well and wields it with care in her latest project, Ultimate Bias: Jpop vs Kpop, a film that explores identity, belonging, and self-acceptance.

“Film is a way for me to say something,” Mari explains. “To ask, ‘Have you felt rejected by your own people? Have you felt alone?’” These personal and universal questions drive her storytelling.

Mari’s identity is shaped by her bicultural upbringing—her mother a Japanese singer and her father a U.S. GI. “There are parts of me that are very Japanese… and another half that’s very American,” she shares. That cultural complexity led her to roles at companies

like Sony and Nintendo, where she often bridged cultural gaps. Now, she uses film to do the same.

With Ultimate Bias, Mari targets young audiences, particularly teens navigating identity conflicts. “Many children have a hard time feeling accepted,” she says. “The film doesn’t o er all the answers, but it does o er connection and starts a conversation.”

© Best Version Media

Set in a fictional Japanese immersion school in McLean, Virginia, the story follows four ethnically diverse teens who unite through a Jpop dance team. Each character wrestles with unique cultural challenges:

• Misa, the perfect Japanese “it” girl, feels su ocated by expectations.

• Crash, a rebellious Japanese-American, suspects a rival Kpop team spy.

• Sooyun, a Korean girl raised in Japan, is criticized for embracing Japanese culture.

• Jin, a Black student born and raised in Japan, longs for acceptance.

Their journey toward a dance competition becomes a deeper exploration of bias, identity, and the power of community.

Inspired by real interviews with “Third Culture Kids,” the film explores cultural tension—particularly between Japanese and Korean identities—while promoting empathy and understanding. Mari was committed to casting actors who could authentically represent their roles. “Every actor in the school is Japanese,” she notes, emphasizing ethical accuracy.

For instance, Sanika, who plays Jin, brought her own experience of not being accepted in Japan to her role. Similarly, Goshi, of Japanese-Korean heritage, o ered depth to his character, Tok, further enriching the film’s cultural commentary.

Despite budget limitations, Ultimate Bias was a true community project. Mari assembled a dedicated team who believed in the film’s message. “Every single actor had a personal experience of not feeling seen or accepted,” she says. That shared vulnerability created a familial atmosphere on set, where actors supported each other—washing costumes, teaching Japanese customs, and building bonds that lasted beyond the shoot.

Mari also had to navigate cultural hesitancy. “Fear was the shocker,” she recalls, describing how fear of the unfamiliar sometimes slowed support. Yet through transparency and mutual respect, the cast and crew embraced the project’s mission wholeheartedly.

The film’s title is a clever play on words. “‘Bias’ refers both to the prejudices characters confront and the K-pop term for a favorite artist,” Mari explains. It’s a reflection of how Ultimate Bias blends pop culture with meaningful social insight.

Ultimately, the film encourages viewers—especially teens—to build community around acceptance rather than conformity. “I want young people to feel they have a say, no matter where they live,” Mari says. While her stories often feature Japanese culture, her goal is universal: to give voice to those who feel unseen.

With Ultimate Bias, Mari Robinson has created more than a film— she’s sparked a conversation, o ered solidarity, and opened the door for deeper understanding.

Dancing in the Rain:

How Sweet Julia Grace Foundation Brings Hope to Families with a Child in Medical Crisis

In April 2025 the Social4Good (S4G) community came together to support families facing the unimaginable: caring for a child with a life-altering or terminal illness. Their chosen nonprofit of the month, the Sweet Julia Grace Foundation (SJGF), is no stranger to walking alongside those living through life’s fiercest storms. The result? A collaboration that will bring human connection to the lonely halls of the pediatric ICU and remind families that they are not alone.

FROM GRIEF TO ACTION

Founded in 2014 by Sara Knight, SJGF was born out of love and loss. Sara's daughter, Julia Grace, lived with a rare genetic disorder called I-Cell disease. Despite her diagnosis, Julia radiated joy and resilience, inspiring those around her. She lived by the mantra and quote by Vivian Greene, "Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain." After Julia passed away at age 12, Knight channeled her grief into action, founding SJGF to honor her daughter's legacy.

“SJGF started with one child. My child. But what we saw as we met more families was an overwhelming need,” said Sara Knight at S4G’s April gathering. “Julia Grace taught us to live in the present. The families we serve are not waiting for a better day to have a good day. They are in the here and now.”

SJGF's mission is to celebrate and love children who are seriously ill, have special needs, or are facing a medical crisis. The Foundation provides non-medical support, grants wishes,

and fills gaps that other services cannot. Children supported by SJGF are a ectionately called "Raindancers," symbolizing their ability to find joy amid adversity.

CUTTING THROUGH RED TAPE, OFFERING REAL SUPPORT

What sets SJGF apart is its no-red-tape approach. Families don’t need to submit lengthy applications or wait weeks for help. If a child is facing a serious medical crisis, SJGF says “yes” as often as possible, regardless of diagnosis or previous support received.

From providing adaptive wheelchairs and special needs strollers, to organizing end-of-treatment parades or gifting therapy puppies, the Foundation’s approach is simple: fill the gap, meet the need, and be the supportive community these families deserve.

One of SJGF’s most transformative programs, the All-Terrain Wheelchair Program, gives children the freedom to explore beyond hospital walls and sidewalks—something as basic as

© Best Version Media

playing outside can be life-changing for a child with significant issues. Because of the high cost of these vehicles, the Foundation is currently looking for corporate sponsors. They also run community-building initiatives like family holiday parties, grief support for moms, and aquatic therapy sessions.

“Families in crisis hear ‘no’ far too often,” says Knight. “Our goal is to be the ‘yes’ they need. Whether it’s a meal delivered through Uber Eats after a long day at the hospital, or the freedom to push their child through sand at the beach, we’re here.”

THE POWER OF COLLECTIVE PHILANTHROPY

Each month, S4G mobilizes its network of women across Northern Virginia to learn about and support a local nonprofit making a di erence. For April 2025, S4G chose SJGF, and the partnership focused on two tangible goals. The first goal was to raise grant monies for SJGF’s Rainy Day Fund, a vital resource covering non-medical essentials like utility bills, housing, travel costs for specialized care, and medical food or formula. The second goal was to purchase items for and assemble parent care packages that include toiletries, snacks, comfort items, and gift cards to support caregivers sleeping in hospital rooms or navigating endless days in pediatric ICUs. S4G raised a total of $5,672 in both dollar and in-kind donations and assembled 50 care packages for SJGF’s Hospital Program, which supports families at INOVA, NIH, and other local facilities.

This isn’t a one-and-done kind of support either. SJGF commits to walking alongside families for the long haul, creating community for people who often feel isolated and forgotten.

“If you meet these kids and see families—otherwise isolated— interacting with each other, you will never be the same,” said Knight. “It's all about these families, and we do what we need to do to meet their needs.” To date SJGF has served over 400 families in Northern Virginia and West Virginia.

A LEGACY THAT LIVES ON

Julia Grace’s legacy lives on in each Raindancer that carries her spirit: brave, joyful, and loving. With the help of organizations like S4G, SJGF continues to build a future where no family walks through a pediatric medical crisis alone. As the yellow umbrella in the foundation’s logo suggests—there is always hope, even in the rain. Want to help? Learn more at www.sweetjuliagrace.org. Support future S4G projects at www.social4good.community.

About Social4Good: S4G is an all-volunteer, grassroots organization that brings together engaged women who want to meet new people and support the organizations that make our community strong. Strategy—and a Broker

The Right Buyer, the Right Deal: Why Selling Your Business Requires

Selling a business is more than just a financial transaction—it’s the culmination of years, often decades, of work, risk-taking, and relationship-building. And while the idea of cashing out may sound simple, the truth is far more complex: the real challenge isn’t if you can just sell—it’s who you sell to. In today’s market, where buyers are abundant, but motivations vary wildly, finding the right buyer is one of the most important factors in achieving a successful, long-term outcome. And navigating that path without a seasoned business broker can cost you more than just money—it can cost you your legacy.

WHY THE RIGHT BUYER IS EVERYTHING

When it comes to selling a business, most owners focus on price. But veterans M&A Advisors and Business Brokers know that price is just one piece of the puzzle.

The right buyer brings things like:

• Strategic alignment: They understand your industry and have a plan for growth.

• Cultural fit: They respect your values and preserve your company culture.

• Operational continuity: They can manage or scale operations without disruption.

• Deal certainty: They have the financial backing and intent to close the deal.

• Legacy protection: They honor your brand, your people, and your customer relationships. The wrong buyer, by contrast, may bring delays, broken promises, or a complete dismantling of what you’ve built. They might ask for endless concessions, fail to secure financing, or walk away mid-deal—leaving you with wasted time and unnecessary stress.

THE HIDDEN RISKS OF GOING IT ALONE

Despite these high stakes, many business owners choose to sell on their own—often because they’ve been approached by an interested buyer or want to avoid broker fees. While understandable, this approach carries significant risks:

1. Underpricing Your Business

Without a proper valuation and market perspective, many owners leave substantial money on the table. A broker understands how to position your business to maximize both purchase price and terms.

2. Attracting the Wrong Interest

Public listings and word-of-mouth outreach can bring in competitors, unqualified buyers, or opportunists seeking to extract confidential information.

One of the fastest ways to damage your business during a sale process is to let word leak. Employees may panic, customers may hesitate, and competitors may take advantage. Brokers use blind listings and nondisclosure agreements to manage the flow of information and maintain discretion.

4. Deal Fatigue

Buyers ask tough questions. Due diligence can last months. Contracts get complex. Managing this while still running your business full-time can lead to burnout, mistakes, and undervalued deals.

5. Lack of Deal Structure Expertise

It’s not just about price. The structure—earn-outs, seller financing, holdbacks, working capital targets—can impact your net proceeds and risk exposure. Brokers know how to negotiate not just numbers, but outcomes.

WHAT A BUSINESS BROKER REALLY DOES

Think of a business broker as your deal quarterback. They manage everything from the first valuation to the final signature, keeping the process e icient, confidential, and aligned with your goals.

Our services typically include:

• Business valuation and exit strategy planning

• Creating a professional, confidential o ering memorandum

• Identifying and marketing to targeted, pre-screened buyers

• Managing buyer inquiries and conducting background vetting

• Facilitating negotiations and term sheet discussions

• Overseeing due diligence, legal coordination, and closing

Most importantly, brokers serve as an objective third party— removing emotion from the process and ensuring you make informed, strategic decisions every step of the way. We understand selling your business isn’t just a transaction—it’s a transition. One that will define your financial future and the legacy of everything you’ve built. The right buyer can carry your business forward. But finding that buyer, protecting your interests, and closing the right deal requires more than instinct—it requires expertise. And that’s why, for most owners, hiring a business broker isn’t just smart—it’s essential.

Happy Spring Means It’s Time for Exterior TLC

As the days grow longer and the first blooms of the season appear, homeowners everywhere are gearing up for their annual spring clean-up. Gutters get cleared, decks get scrubbed, and shrubbery is trimmed back—yet one critical area often goes unnoticed until it’s too late: wood rot. That seemingly harmless patch of peeling paint on your window trim or porch posts could signal a deeper problem that threatens both your home’s curb appeal and its structural integrity.

THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF WOOD ROT

Wood rot begins innocuously enough—just a small spot where paint has bubbled or peeled. But beneath that cracked surface, moisture seeps in, providing the perfect environment for fungi to take hold. Once wood-rotting fungi start their work, they rapidly break down the cell structure of the wood, causing it to weaken, crumble, and eventually fail.

Unchecked wood rot doesn’t just look bad; it can lead to:

• Structural Damage: Rotten wood loses its strength, compromising window frames, fascia boards, and porch supports.

• Moisture Intrusion: As wood breaks down, gaps and voids form, allowing more water to penetrate your home’s envelope.

• Pest Infestations: Damp, decayed wood attracts carpenter ants, termites, and other wood-boring insects.

• Escalating Repair Costs: What begins as a small patch repair can balloon into a full-scale replacement project when wood rot spreads.

WHY “JUST PAINTING OVER IT” FALLS SHORT

Applying a fresh coat of paint over rot might make your home look bright and new for a few weeks—but it does nothing to stop the decay underneath. In fact, paint can trap moisture in the damaged area, accelerating the rotting process. By masking the problem, you risk missing the window for timely repair, which means you’ll pay more in the long run to replace larger sections of trim, siding, or structural components.

THE PROVEN APPROACH: REMOVE, TREAT, AND RESTORE

Protecting your home from wood rot requires more than cosmetic fixes. A thorough, three-step process is key:

1. Assessment & Removal

A professional inspection pinpoints every area a ected by rot. Technicians then carefully cut out and remove the compromised wood—ensuring no decayed material is left behind.

2. Treatment & Replacement

Treated wood preservatives are applied to surrounding surfaces to inhibit future fungal growth. New boards, matched to your home’s style and dimensions, are installed to restore strength and integrity.

3. Seal & Finish

Finally, premium exterior primers and paints create a weather-proof seal. These coatings repel water, resist UV damage, and keep your home looking pristine for years to come.
