DEAR McLEAN RESIDENTS,

This month’s edition of McLean Living is a heartfelt tribute—a celebration of the incredible women in our community who continue to rise, lead, nurture, and persevere. It’s a collective nod of admiration, a pat on the shoulder in solidarity, and a reminder that we are walking this journey together.

The women featured on this month’s cover are not just professionals or entrepreneurs—they are forces of resilience, compassion, and authenticity. I admire each of them in di erent ways, and their stories deserve to be seen, heard, and celebrated. They represent what so many of us embody: courage, grace, and the determination to build meaningful lives—both personally and professionally.

In their honor, I want to share one of my favorite quotes, a reflection of what it means to own your story and stand in your truth:

“It’s not about how many times you get rejected or fall down or are beaten up, it’s about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going.” ― Lady Gaga

To every woman reading this: your voice matters, your story matters, and your presence strengthens this community. Let’s continue to lift each other up, support local businesses, and shape McLean into a place where connection, kindness, and empowerment thrive.

With love and admiration,

AUGUST IS THAT SWEET SPOT — a chance to reset, create with intention, and take a breath before the busy season begins. In the midst of the chaos, we hope McLean Living o ers you a moment to slow down and simply enjoy.

VISION. IMPACT.

Our beautiful community of McLean is built on stories of vision, perseverance, and purpose—stories that inspire, uplift, and remind us of the strength that lives among us. Among these are the journeys of remarkable women who have carved their own paths to success, often against great odds.

This month, we are honored to spotlight three extraordinary women whose stories, while uniquely their own, share a common thread: resilience, heart, and a relentless drive to make a di erence.

Meet Dr. Lorena Khourri-Popp, founder of Labelle MD Aesthetics, whose passion for healing began in childhood and has evolved into a thriving wellness practice.

Meet Francesca Pregano, Chief Operations O icer at Smile Makers Dental Center, who rose from college intern to executive leader, helping shape one of the region’s most trusted dental brands.

And meet Diana Moncada, founder of Peacenik Events, who turned personal transformation into a vibrant business that brings people together through beauty, culture, and celebration.

We’re proud to share their stories with you.

PHOTOS BY MYRTLE ROY
The constant is my commitment to people,

performance, and purpose.

It’s not every day you meet someone who has helped build a thriving healthcare organization from the ground up—starting as a college student and rising to the executive level. But Francesca E. Pregano is far from ordinary.

As Chief Operations O icer of Smile Makers Dental Center, Francesca now leads a dynamic network of 20 providers, six locations, and 40 treatment rooms across Virginia. Her journey began nearly two decades ago at George Mason University, where she studied psychology and business while working at a small dental practice with just one doctor and four treatment rooms. What began as a part-time job quickly evolved into a lifelong calling. Along the way, she earned her MBA, completed multiple leadership development programs, and acquired industry-specific certifications that helped shape her path.

“I fell in love with the intersection of two things I’ve always been passionate about—the psychology of people and the complexity of business,” Francesca reflects. That passion propelled her through nearly every role in the organization, ultimately positioning her as the strategic force behind one of the region’s most trusted dental brands.

Her professional path is defined not only by remarkable achievements but also by profound personal resilience. By age 22, Francesca was already managing the day-to-day operations of a multi-million-dollar practice, overseeing a team of more than 40, and supporting a network of doctors. In 2022, while navigating the challenges of rapid growth, she also faced unimaginable loss—the passing of both parents just three months apart. “It was the most di icult season of my life,” she shares. “But I leaned on discipline, perseverance, and the incredible team around me. Together, we built systems that carried us through—and still power our growth today.”

Under Francesca’s leadership, Smile Makers has not only expanded in scale—it has transformed in structure. One of her proudest accomplishments came in late 2023 and early 2024, when she led a strategic overhaul of the organization’s operational framework. Recognizing the need for sustainable growth, she restructured the organizational chart to create self-su icient, high-performing teams at every location—teams that could thrive without over-reliance on any one individual.

Now, with a solid foundation in place, Smile Makers is preparing for its next chapter: expanding its footprint by adding more locations and extending its trusted care to new communities across the region.

Simultaneously, she designed and implemented a comprehensive remote infrastructure, developing departments for call center operations, revenue cycle management, finance, compliance, and auditing. The results were transformative: streamlined communication, elevated patient experience, and a 40% increase in profitability.

“Being trusted to build and lead these departments from the ground up was a defining moment in my career,” she says. “What I’m most proud of is designing systems that eliminate ine iciencies and connect every part of the business. When success is built into the structure—not dependent on one person—that’s when you know it’s built to last.”

Her approach to leadership is both visionary and deeply human. Francesca starts her day between 5 and 6 AM, dedicating the early hours to her mindset, physical health, and clarity. A firm believer in the link between personal discipline and professional impact, she works out 4–5 times a week while listening to leadership and operations podcasts to stay ahead of industry trends.

By mid-morning, she’s reviewed key performance data, identified operational priorities, and checked in with her remote teams around the globe. Her day unfolds with intention—department meetings, systems implementation reviews, team development, and strategic planning all find their place. She manages 70–80% of her responsibilities from her home o ice, overseeing project execution, financial performance, and marketing strategy before heading into one of the practice’s physical locations.

“When I’m on-site, I don’t sit behind a desk,” she says. “I want to be present on the floor. That’s where real culture happens—through visibility, connection, and showing up for the team.” Each day ends with reflection: What moved the needle? What needs to be carried forward? Where can I lead more e ectively?

“No two days are ever the same,” she says, “but the constant is my commitment to people, performance, and purpose.”

Today, Francesca’s influence extends beyond Smile Makers. She contributes to national publications, appears on leadership podcasts, and will soon serve as a speaker at Becker’s Future of Dentistry Summit. “These opportunities are humbling,” she says. “They’re a reflection of the value in leading with authenticity, resilience, and purpose.”

Beyond the boardroom, Francesca is deeply rooted in her community. A lifelong Northern Virginian, she finds inspiration in McLean’s diversity and entrepreneurial spirit. Smile Makers is proud to support causes such as Smiles for All and Smile Train, a global organization that holds special significance for her, given that two of her cousins were born with cleft conditions. “Their mission restores not just smiles, but hope,” she says.

When she’s not working, Francesca recharges through movement, creativity, and time with loved ones—including her loyal eight-yearold dog. “Most people don’t expect it, but I love painting, design, playing the piano—even DIY projects around the house. Creativity grounds me.”

Asked what advice she’d give other women aspiring to leadership roles in healthcare or business, Francesca speaks with clarity and conviction: “Prioritize your mindset. Say yes before you feel 100% ready. Lead with service. And never underestimate the power of being the person who picks up the ball when it’s dropped. That’s how you earn trust—and build something that lasts.”

In Francesca E. Pregano, we see a leader whose career is not just built on growth but on grace, grit, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. Her story is a powerful reminder that operational success and human connection aren’t opposing forces—they are, in fact, what make lasting transformation possible.

Believe in your vision, even if no one else sees it yet. Trust your instincts, stay true to your voice, and don’t be afraid to take up space.

Some people build businesses from blueprints. Diana Moncada built hers from love, resilience, and a deep sense of beauty rooted in her Latin heritage.

Born in Colombia, Diana was raised in a culture where every gathering was a celebration—vivid, emotional, and rich in connection. “My Latin roots are at the core of who I am,” she says. “They inspire the creativity and warmth I bring to every event.”

That vibrant spirit lives in Peacenik Events, the boutique event company she founded during a transformative chapter of her life.

Diana moved to the United States in her early twenties with hope in her heart and a dream of building a new life. She devoted those early years to raising her three children, setting aside personal ambitions—until life’s twists guided her back to herself. “After my divorce, I started channeling my energy into creating beautiful celebrations for my kids. People noticed, and before I knew it, I was being asked to plan other events,” she recalls.

Peacenik Events was born out of that personal awakening—a journey of rediscovering joy and identity. “I started it from scratch—no formal training, no business background—just a passion and a desire to build something of my own,” she shares. “What began with decorating my children’s parties slowly grew into a company grounded in love, creativity, and hard work.”

Today, Peacenik Events brings to life everything from intimate birthday celebrations to large-scale brand activations for clients like Porsche Tysons Corner, Guapo’s Restaurant, and McLean Living. Diana’s signature is unmistakable: bold colors, intentional design, and a touch of drama that transforms every space into an unforgettable experience. “Every detail is curated with heart,” she says. “That’s what makes it personal.”

them to understand the value of resilience, the importance of believing in yourself, and the beauty of starting over when life calls for it. Success isn’t just about achievements—it’s about doing what you love and staying true to who you are.”

For Diana, every event tells a story—and every client becomes part of that story. “Every milestone in my career feels meaningful,” she says. “But the most rewarding moments are when a client tells me I made their day unforgettable. That’s when I know I’m exactly where I’m meant to be.”

Her message to other women—especially within the Latin community—is powerful: “Believe in your vision, even if no one else sees it yet. Trust your instincts, stay true to your voice, and don’t be afraid to take up space. As Latinas, we carry strength, creativity, and resilience—we just have to own it.”

Entirely self-taught, Diana’s creative instinct is both sharp and inspired. “I find inspiration in everything—fashion, travel, nature, and especially my clients. Hearing their stories and turning their vision into reality is what fuels me.”

Her identity as a Latina and a mother continues to shape her purpose. “My children are my greatest motivation. I want them to see that success doesn’t mean having it all figured out—it means showing up with passion and building something that reflects who you are.”

Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship hasn’t been easy, but it’s one of her proudest accomplishments. “Being a mother has made me more organized, focused, and driven,” she says. “My children have seen me build this from the ground up, and I want

Looking ahead, Diana dreams of opening a Peacenik Events storefront—a beautiful, welcoming space where clients can plan their celebrations and shop for curated, elevated party supplies. “I want it to be a hub for creativity and connection—and a place where I can mentor other women as they build their own paths.”

Until then, Diana continues crafting moments that make people feel seen, celebrated, and connected. “Success,” she says with a smile, “is creating joy and connection. That’s what I want every event to deliver.”

To me, health and beauty are not indulgences…they are the foundation of a full, empowered life.

Dr. Lorena Popp’s steps to becoming a physician began with a prayer. As a young girl lying in a hospital bed, uncertain if she’d make it home, she found herself captivated by the doctors around her. “Their hands seemed to hold both knowledge and healing,” she recalls. That powerful moment planted a dream in her heart—one she never let go of.

Today, that dream lives on. A classically trained physician, Dr. Popp earned her medical degree from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich—one of Germany’s most prestigious institutions. She then completed integrated internships at Yale, followed by a residency in internal medicine at George Washington University. Her academic and clinical path reflects both intellectual rigor and a deep commitment to whole-person care.

After years leading Tysons Internal Medicine and Wellness Center, Dr. Popp founded Labelle MD in 2020—a dual-practice model based in Vienna, Virginia, where she fuses internal medicine with advanced aesthetic care. Though her thriving boutique practice is in Vienna, Dr. Popp and her family proudly call McLean home.

Labelle MD Esthetics was founded with the goal of bringing a more integrative approach to patient care—one that honors both inner health and outer confidence.

“Looking good and feeling good go hand in hand,” she says. “Labelle MD is about creating harmony between wellness and self-image.”

What makes Labelle MD truly stand apart is its customized treatment philosophy. Every care plan is thoughtfully tailored to the individual and may combine neurotoxins, fillers, Sculptra, microneedling with radiofrequency, and laser treatments— sequenced over several months to help patients achieve their best results. A decade-long leader in medical weight loss, the practice also incorporates GLP-1 medications, often pairing them with IV vitamin drips to restore energy and balance.

In 2024, Labelle MD opened a state-of-the-art location in downtown Vienna, designed by Dr. Popp’s niece, Nadja Bauer— winner of Germany’s 2023 National Saint-Gobain architecture prize. The serene, modern space has been described by patients as “a peaceful retreat,” but for Dr. Popp, it’s more than design—it’s about the energy and intention behind every detail.

As part of her evolving vision, Dr. Popp now also o ers concierge medicine—a personalized, relationship-based model that provides patients with 24/7 direct access to their physician. “It’s a deeply

meaningful way to practice,” she shares. “It allows me to care for people in a truly comprehensive, human way.”

At home, Dr. Popp finds her greatest joy in her family. She and her husband, Dr. Samir Khouri, a respected pulmonary and intensive care specialist, have been married for over 20 years. Together, they are proud parents to three amazing children: Sammy (19), Leah (15), and Philip (13). “They’ve seen the late nights and the hard work,” she says. “And they support me wholeheartedly—sometimes even helping out at the front desk.”

A classically trained pianist, Dr. Popp finds balance in creativity and connection. Her leadership style is hands-on and heartforward. “We’re a family at Labelle MD,” she says. “And that energy flows to our patients.”

Whether she’s mentoring future doctors, o ering educational workshops, or simply listening with intention, Dr. Popp’s impact goes far beyond the treatment room. “Sometimes, it’s not about the procedure,” she says. “It’s about being present and holding space for someone to feel seen.”

As she looks ahead, her mission remains clear: to inspire confidence, nurture well-being, and create ripples of connection in her community. “This is the life I dreamed of in that hospital bed,” she smiles. “Helping people feel whole—that’s the real magic.”

Preparing for Life After the Exit

The Emotional and Financial Considerations Owners Forget to Plan For

For many business owners, selling their company represents decades of hard work, sacrifice, sweat, tears and perseverance. While much of the focus in mergers and acquisitions (M&A) tends to center on maximizing valuation, negotiating deal terms, and ensuring a smooth transition, one of the most overlooked, yet critical aspects is what comes after the sale.

The reality is that life after selling your company can feel both exhilarating and disorienting. Owners often find themselves facing not just financial adjustments, but deep emotional challenges as well. Preparing for this new chapter requires just as much thoughtful planning as the sale itself

THE EMOTIONAL SIDE OF EXITING

To its owner, a business is rarely “just a business”. It often embodies personal identity, purpose, and community connections. When that is suddenly gone, owners can experience a surprising sense of loss or even grief. Common emotional hurdles include:

• Loss of identity: For years, you may have introduced yourself as “the owner of ABC Company.” Once you no longer hold that title, the question “What do you do?” can become unexpectedly di icult to answer.

• Disrupted routine: Entrepreneurs are used to highenergy, fast-paced days. The sudden free time can lead to feelings of emptiness or restlessness. THE SLOW DOWN CAN BE EMOTIONALLY PAINFUL

• Separation anxiety: Many owners feel deeply tied to their employees, clients, and community. Letting go can feel like leaving a family behind, this takes mental preparation especially for owners who have no remaining ties to their companies.

Addressing these feelings in advance — through coaching, talking with other exited entrepreneurs, or working with advisors — can help prepare you for the transition.

FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS: BEYOND THE DEAL PRICE

While a liquidity event is financially transformative, it also requires careful planning to ensure long-term security and fulfillment. Key financial considerations include:

• Creating a post-exit financial plan: Work with a wealth advisor to build a strategy for investing proceeds, creating an income stream, and mitigating taxes. This is essential to preserving wealth and supporting your next life goals.

• Tax e iciency: Taxes can dramatically reduce your net proceeds if not carefully planned for ahead of the sale. Strategies such as charitable trusts, qualified small

business stock (QSBS) exemptions, or installment sales can help optimize your outcome (wealth managers are a great resource to discuss these strategies with)

• Philanthropy and legacy planning: Many former owners feel called to give back after an exit. Structuring charitable giving or establishing a family foundation can be both meaningful and financially e icient.

PLANNING FOR PURPOSE

There is no question that selling your business provides an opportunity to redefine what success and fulfillment look like. Some former owners choose to:

• Start a new venture or become an investor

• Mentor

• Focus on family and personal passions

• Engage more deeply in community or charitable work

• Pursue hobbies and travel

No matter what you envision, It’s critical to start considering these possibilities before the sale. Without a sense of purpose, the post-exit freedom that seemed so appealing can quickly feel like a void.

START EARLY

A successful exit is not just a transaction — it’s a life transition. If you’re considering selling your business in the next few years, start building your post-exit plan today. Your future self will thank you.

MADEIRA SCHOOL CELEBRATES THE MADEIRA THE

CLASS OF 2025

Representative Janelle Bynum

’92 delivers keynote address celebrating purpose, courage, and lifelong impact

In a heartfelt and inspiring ceremony held on Saturday, June 7, The Madeira School celebrated its 2025 Commencement, awarding diplomas to 80 graduates in a setting as vibrant and forward-looking as the students themselves. Held in the school’s scenic outdoor amphitheater, the event brought together faculty, families, and alumnae to honor tradition, reflect on growth, and look ahead to the graduates’ promising futures.

The keynote speaker was none other than Madeira alumna and trailblazer Representative Janelle Bynum ’92, Oregon’s first African American Congresswoman. Her powerful address centered on the theme of providence—the belief that life’s path is shaped not by luck, but by purpose and care. With sincerity and grace, Bynum shared her journey from inner-city Washington, D.C. to engineer, entrepreneur, mother, and now U.S. Representative, crediting Madeira as the place that helped her find her voice and courage.

“Your road ahead is full of promise, but it will not be without challenge,” she told graduates. “Never stop believing in yourself and the value you bring to this world.”

Head of School Christina Kyong also addressed the graduates, reflecting on their personal journeys and the transformative years spent at Madeira. Her message encouraged students to carry forward the school’s values and lessons, while staying present and grounded.

“Learn from the past, embrace the present, and help create a better future,” she said. “The future is not a fixed place; it’s a canvas. And you… have already picked up the brush.”

Student speakers added personal depth to the celebration. Nate Young’s lyrical reflection captured the shared memories, traditions, and growth that defined the Class of 2025. Senior Chianu Kachikwu invited graduates and guests alike to pause and appreciate the moment—"In a world that rarely pauses," she said, "let this be our moment of stillness."

Board Chair Anita Tolani ’91, P’24, spoke to the school’s enduring mission to nurture changemakers. Quoting Madeira’s informal motto, she said, “Function in disaster, finish in style, remain calm at the center of your being,” encouraging graduates to find calm and clarity as they step into new chapters of their lives.

The ceremony preserved Madeira’s rich traditions, i of each graduate carrying 13 red roses—a nod to the school’s first graduating class. Another hallmark: rings with the seal’s sunburst facing inward to abs flipping the ring upon graduation to share that lig

The Class of 2025 has already made a lasting mark, students accepted to 163 di erent colleges and universities across the country and around the world.

As Madeira continues its mission of launching women who change the world, this year’s graduates leave campus empowered, confident, and ready to lead with purpose.

About The Madeira School

Founded in 1906, The Madeira School is an all-girls college preparatory day and boarding school located on a 376-acre campus in McLean, Virginia. With a nationally recognized cocurriculum program and an unwavering commitment to leadership, confidence, and academic excellence, Madeira inspires young women in grades 9–12 to thrive—both in high school and in life.

More than just a festival, COPA Tysons is a movement—an annual campaign to make soccer a defining theme of the city. With vibrant watch parties, friendly pickup matches, and a family festival packed with interactive games and activities, this celebration of “the beautiful game” created a space where people of all backgrounds came together to share their love of sport and culture.

“What I love about COPA Tysons Soccer Fest is how it elevates soccer beyond the field, using the power of the game to unite people culturally and socially,” shared Tamir Linhart Tysons Community Alliance board member and founder of Golden Boot Soccer. “The festival creates a festive, inclusive atmosphere that strengthens community ties and honors our diverse soccer-loving heritage.”

With support from the Tysons Community Alliance (TCA) and in partnership with local restaurants and venues, the event showcased Tysons as a rising destination for international sports and cultural celebration.

“The success of this year’s COPA Tysons Soccer Fest underscores the growing power of Tysons as a regional hub,” said Katie Cristol, CEO of TCA. “We’re not only building community—we’re supporting small businesses, welcoming visitors, and showing the world what makes Tysons so special.”

As the cheers echo into next summer, one thing is clear— COPA Tysons is more than a game. It’s a joyful, unifying force that’s here to stay.

Health Products & Supplementation

While it’s hard to believe we are in August already, it can be harder to believe all of the numerous health products and supplements that are out on the market. It should come as no surprise that it is, truly, a multibillion dollar industry. This month, I am excited to share with you my “Fit5” of favorite health and wellness products. This is, of course, a non-exhaustive list, and there are a LOT more I take throughout the course of my day. In fact, there are a LOT more on the market you will hear health and fitness professionals tout, but I feel these are a great place to start if you are interested in adding to your daily nutrition and supplement routine.

I would be remiss if I did not preface that I am not a doctor, nutritionist, or dietician. I am, however, a certified Health Coach with two di erent certifications in the arena. What I share is based on my own research, what has worked well for me (which may not necessarily work for you), the work I have done with my holistic doctor and, of course, trial and error.

#1: ANCIENT NUTRITION COLLAGEN PROTEIN POWDER

Adding a good quality source of collagen provides a host of benefits that are a definite must in anyone’s nutrition regime. Again, while this is just my personal opinion, collagen is one of those proteins we tend to not get enough of in our diets and one that is so important!

Key Ingredients

• Hydrolyzed Bovine Hide Collagen Peptides

• Fermented Eggshell Membrane Collagen - clinically studied, providing ten (10) di erent types of collagen, all while supporting gut health, skin health, and joints

McLean Project for the Arts Establishes New

Arts & Education Center in Downtown McLean

In an exciting new chapter for the arts in McLean, the McLean Project for the Arts (MPA) has announced a transformative gift that will help bring to life the long-envisioned MPA Berlage Arts & Education Center—a second location set to enhance arts access, education, and community engagement in the heart of downtown McLean. This significant contribution, made by Bruce L. Berlage—a dedicated MPA board member and longtime community supporter—will fund a major expansion that includes three new exhibition galleries, a state-of-the-art ceramics studio, and a welcoming indoor/outdoor café space. Construction on the new center is scheduled to begin this summer.

“MPA is deeply grateful to Bruce Berlage for his extraordinary generosity and vision,” said Lori Carbonneau, Executive Director of MPA. “Bruce has made a lasting impact on this community not only through his success in real estate, homebuilding, and banking, but also through his leadership, philanthropy, and deep belief in the power of the arts to inspire and connect. His support has been instrumental in turning this dream into reality.”

The announcement was made during MPA’s annual Spring Benefit, where community leaders, artists, and supporters gathered to celebrate the organization’s ongoing mission.

The new Berlage Arts & Education Center will serve as a cultural anchor for McLean, enriching lives through visual arts

exhibitions, hands-on learning, and creative programming.

Public and private partners have joined in support of this expansion. Last fall, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors designated $500,000 from the Economic Opportunity Reserve to support the construction of the new center—recognizing the arts as a driver of both community vitality and economic development.

“This is a big win for McLean and for Fairfax County,” said Supervisor Jimmy Bierman. “The MPA Berlage Arts & Education Center will be a welcoming space for residents to gather, learn, and experience the power of the arts. We are proud to support a project that will have such lasting cultural and economic impact.”

In addition to Mr. Berlage’s generous gift, the MPA campaign has received major support from the McLean Community Center, the McLean Community Foundation, the Monett family, and Silvia Sagari & Magdi Iskander. To date, MPA has raised $5.6 million of its $6.25 million campaign goal.

Once complete, the new center will complement MPA’s ongoing programming at the McLean Community Center, allowing the organization to expand its signature o erings—such as its acclaimed ArtReach program, exhibitions by emerging and established artists, and community events like MPAartfest.
