Blending Art, Medicine, and Meaningful Community Life
By SOFIA ROMAN | Professional photos by MYRTLE ROY
Nestled in a serene corner of Great Falls, Virginia—where winding trails meet vibrant neighborhood gatherings—the Grubel household radiates with a joyful hum of purpose, play, and passion. At the heart of this dynamic family is Emily Grubel: wife, mother, medical professional, entrepreneur, and founder of Great Falls Aesthetics. Her days blend the intimacy of motherhood with the precision of medical practice and the intuition of artistic expression, all guided by her mission: “Blending Art and Medicine to Enhance Personal Wellness.”
Emily’s path to founding Great Falls Aesthetics is as unique as it is inspiring. With a background that spans art history, auction houses, public relations, and critical care nursing, she brings a rare depth to her aesthetic practice. Her two years in Bolivia teaching children and her fluency in Spanish reflect a heart for service that threads through every stage of her career.
Emily shares her life with her husband, Brian; their two young sons—Max, nearly three, and eight-month-old Finn—and their rescue cat, Rose. Their home is a loving whirlwind of hectic energy, giggles (or screeches), and the comforting rhythm of family routines.
Evenings belong entirely to family—strolls through leafy trails, splashy bath times, storybooks, lullabies, and, once the children are tucked in, quiet moments just for the couple.
Emily and Brian’s love story began with a leap of faith—an online match, nightly FaceTime calls, and a swift in-person meeting that changed everything. “I never believed in soulmates,” Emily recalls, “until I met Brian.”

“A typical day begins early,” Emily says with a smile, “with breakfast and race cars around the kitchen island.” Brian, a devoted father and engineer, often handles daycare drop-o while Emily enjoys a slower morning with baby Finn before heading into her aesthetic studio.

Their connection is grounded in shared love languages, deep mutual respect, and a commitment to teamwork—especially in parenting. “We fluidly share responsibilities,” Emily notes, “and always make room for laughter.”
Dr. Brian Grubel is the Chief Technology O cer for a division of a major defense contractor, where he ensures the safety, quality, and reliability of advanced autonomous technologies used in national security—from deep underwater to outer space. With over 20 years of experience, he’s known as a forward-thinking leader in innovation, digital transformation, and operational e ciency. He holds multiple patents and trade secrets in cutting-edge fields.
In addition to his professional achievements, Brian brings immense value to Great Falls Aesthetics through his strategic insight and operational leadership, acting as an informal Chief Operating O cer. His entrepreneurial drive and sharp business acumen perfectly complement Emily’s clinical and artistic vision.
Outside of work, Brian is passionate about fitness—often running, weightlifting, or golfing—and enjoys pursuing entrepreneurial and real estate ventures.
Max, their curious and a ectionate toddler, is thriving at a local Montessori school and is currently into puzzles, family walks, books, and riding his scooter. His latest adventure? Caring for his goldfish, Pez.

Baby Finn’s journey has been more complex. After struggling with weight gain, he was recently diagnosed with a severe milk protein allergy. Emily has adjusted her diet while breastfeeding and supplements with special formula. The support she has found among fellow Great Falls moms has been a source of comfort and strength.
“Finn is the sweetest baby—he rarely cries and is totally captivated by Max,” she shares. “Watching their bond grow has been such a gift.”
Weekends are for family adventures—exploring Riverbend Park, attending Concerts on the Green, or enjoying dinner at favorites

like The Old Brogue or Izumi Sushi. Emily frequents local gems like Harlow’s, RTR Pilates, and Kaylyn’s Nail Spa and recently joined the Women’s Club of Great Falls to deepen her community connections.
The Grubels were drawn to Great Falls for its perfect blend of nature and neighborliness. “It has the charm of a small town but with access to incredible amenities,” Emily says. “We love the trails, the parks, and the genuine sense of community.”

the time, she was managing a demanding schedule in orthopedic medicine, regularly traveling to assist in surgeries across multiple locations. Launching Great Falls Aesthetics allowed her to create a better balance—being more present for her family while pursuing her passion for aesthetics.
BALANCE ISN'T ALWAYS EASY... BUT WITH CLEAR BOUNDARIES, OPEN COMMUNICATION, AND A WHOLE LOT OF LOVE, WE FIND OUR RHYTHM.
As an orthopedic nurse practitioner, Emily brings advanced surgical skills, anatomical expertise, and a meticulous, steady hand to every treatment. “Aesthetics blends my two worlds,” she says. “My time in surgery taught me precision, and my study of art gave me a keen eye for balance and symmetry.”
Rather than relying on flashy social media or aggressive promotions, Great Falls Aesthetics is grounded in science and guided by genuine patient care. “I’m not here to push products,” Emily explains. “I’m here to listen and help people feel like the best version of themselves.”
From neurotoxin treatments to weight loss therapy to regenerative microneedling, every service is thoughtfully chosen and evidencebased. “I spend a lot of my free time reading medical journals. It might not be sexy,” she laughs, “but it ensures our clients receive the safest, most e ective care.”
At Great Falls Aesthetics, community connection is woven into everything Emily does. From donating aesthetic services to local causes to participating in events hosted by the Great Falls Grange Foundation, giving back is central to her mission. Great Falls Aesthetics isn’t just a med spa—it’s a reflection of her deep dedication to the people and spirit of Great Falls.
Through Great Falls Aesthetics, Emily has created more than a practice—she’s built a sanctuary where art, science, and heart converge. She empowers clients with knowledge, confidence, and natural results—all while nurturing her growing family and embracing her vibrant community.
“Balance isn’t always easy,” she admits. “But with clear boundaries, open communication, and a whole lot of love, we find our rhythm.”
In the Grubel household, wellness is not just a profession—it’s a way of life. And here in Great Falls, their story continues to unfold: grounded in connection, inspired by beauty, and always growing together.
Fun Fact:
Before founding Great Falls Aesthetics, Emily traveled throughout Latin America as part of a competitive indigenous dance troupe, complete with traditional costumes. Today, her love for culture continues at home— she and Brian are passionate about exposing their children to diverse traditions, and she speaks only Spanish with their sons, Max and Finn.

By DR. RISHITA JAJU - Harvard Grad, Mommy Dentist, TEDxSpeaker & Educator, Board Certi ed Pediatric Laser Dentist.
Q: WHAT DOES GETTING A LASER FILLING INVOLVE?
Dr. Jaju: A laser filling uses a special dental laser instead of a conventional drill to treat cavities. At Smile Wonders, we utilize the Waterlase by Biolase, which is an all-tissue laser e ective on both hard tissues like teeth and bone, as well as soft tissues such as gums, lips, and tongues. Its precision allows for the removal of only the decayed portion of the tooth, preserving more of the natural tooth structure compared to a traditional drill. This makes the process quicker, more precise, and significantly more comfortable than what many adults remember from their own childhood dental visits.
A significant advantage is that we often don't need to use needles or numbing shots. This means no numb lips or drooling afterward, and children can typically return to school or their activities immediately. Additionally, fillings in di erent areas of the mouth can often be completed in the same visit.
Q: ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF LASERS USED IN DENTISTRY?
id you know that it was possible to get no-shot, no-pain laser fillings and frenectomies right here in Northern Virginia?
The use of lasers in dentistry has revolutionized the landscape of pediatric care. But, it may also bring up questions about what laser dentistry is and how it compares to traditional methods. As our area's expert contributor and educator in this very topic, we spoke with Dr. Rishita Jaju of Smile Wonders in Reston, VA. We asked her to help us understand how this advanced technology is transforming dental experiences for kids, whether it involves fillings, gum disease, or frenectomies.
Dr. Jaju: Yes, there are various types of dental lasers. It's a good idea to ask your dentist about the type they use, how it functions, and whether it's suitable for both teeth and gums. Some practices use basic diode lasers, which work by generating heat. While they can be useful for certain soft tissue procedures, they might cause charring or a slight odor. Other o ices may use CO2 lasers, which can also work on gums and teeth, but not all. At Smile Wonders, we opted for the Waterlase because it's gentle and biocompatible with oral tissues, using a mild cooling mist to prevent heat buildup and damage to surrounding structures.
Q: CAN LASERS EFFECTIVELY HELP WITH GUM DISEASE OR INFLAMMATION IN CHILDREN?
Dr. Jaju: Absolutely. Lasers can gently reduce bacteria beneath the gums and treat inflammation, which is particularly beneficial for

children with braces or medical conditions that make thorough brushing more challenging. If food becomes trapped near erupting teeth, causing swelling or discomfort, the laser can quickly and painlessly resolve the issue.
Q: ARE LASERS TRULY BETTER FOR FRENECTOMIES, OR IS THAT JUST MARKETING?
Dr. Jaju: Lasers, especially the Waterlase, can make frenectomies safer and more precise. Unlike traditional scissors, which rely on estimation, the laser removes tissue in very thin layers. This accuracy helps ensure that the cut is neither too deep nor too shallow, leading to better outcomes.
Q: WHY AREN’T LASERS MORE COMMONLY USED BY DENTISTS?
Dr. Jaju: Laser dentistry requires specialized training that is not yet a standard part of dental school curriculums. Dentists need to invest in the equipment and pursue additional training independently. The positive trend is that more dental schools are beginning to o er laser dentistry electives, indicating growth in the field.
This is just a glimpse of how far modern dentistry has come in the last couple of decades. Come experience the magical laser dentistry and find out why kids love us and parents trust us! Call us today!

Summer Switch: Transitioning Your Skincare for the Season
BY SONA SUT Licensed Master Aesthetician
As we step into the summer months, it’s time to reevaluate your skincare wardrobe. Just like we trade our coats for linen, our skin needs lighter, breathable formulations to thrive in warmer weather. Rich creams and heavy oils that served us well in winter can now feel su ocating, leading to congestion and dullness. Start by swapping out dense moisturizers for gel-based or water-light hydrators that o er deep moisture without the weight. Look for serums rich in hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to keep your skin plump and protected from environmental stressors. SPF, of course, is nonnegotiable—choose one that feels luxurious enough to wear daily.
Summer is also a great time to embrace gentle exfoliation to clear away buildup from sunscreen, sweat, and travel. The goal isn’t to strip your skin, but to keep it fresh,

The Right Buyer, the Right Deal: Why Selling Your Business Requires Strategy—and a Broker
RIKA BAEZ-GRIMES Business Broker
Certi昀椀ed M&A Advisor | Commercial Real-Estate
Selling a business is more than just a financial transaction—it’s the culmination of years, often decades, of work, risk-taking, and relationship-building. And while the idea of cashing out may sound simple, the truth is far more complex: the real challenge isn’t if you can just sell—it’s who you sell to. In today’s market, where buyers are abundant, but motivations vary wildly, finding the right buyer is one of the most important factors in achieving a successful, long-term outcome. And navigating that path without a seasoned business broker can cost you more than just money—it can cost you your legacy.
WHY THE RIGHT BUYER IS EVERYTHING
When it comes to selling a business, most owners focus on price. But veterans M&A Advisors and Business Brokers know that price is just one piece of the puzzle.
The right buyer brings things like:
• Strategic alignment: They understand your industry and have a plan for growth.
• Cultural fit: They respect your values and preserve your company culture.
• Operational continuity: They can manage or scale operations without disruption.
• Deal certainty: They have the financial backing and intent to close the deal.
• Legacy protection: They honor your brand, your people, and your customer relationships.
The wrong buyer, by contrast, may bring delays, broken promises, or a complete dismantling of what you’ve built. They might ask for endless concessions, fail to secure financing, or walk away mid-deal—leaving you with wasted time and unnecessary stress.
THE HIDDEN RISKS OF GOING IT ALONE
Despite these high stakes, many business owners choose to sell on their own—often because they’ve been approached by an interested buyer or want to avoid broker fees. While understandable, this approach carries significant risks:
1. Underpricing Your Business
Without a proper valuation and market perspective, many owners leave substantial money on the table. A broker understands how to position your business to maximize both purchase price and terms.
2. Attracting the Wrong Interest
Public listings and word-of-mouth outreach can bring in competitors, unqualified buyers, or opportunists seeking to extract confidential information.
3. Breaking Confidentiality
One of the fastest ways to damage your business during a sale process is to let word leak. Employees may panic, customers may hesitate, and competitors may take advantage. Brokers use blind listings and nondisclosure agreements to manage the flow of information and maintain discretion.
4. Deal Fatigue
Buyers ask tough questions. Due diligence can last months. Contracts get complex. Managing this while still running your business full-time can lead to burnout, mistakes, and undervalued deals.
5. Lack of Deal Structure Expertise
It’s not just about price. The structure—earn-outs, seller financing, holdbacks, working capital targets—can impact your net proceeds and risk exposure. Brokers know how to negotiate not just numbers, but outcomes.
WHAT A BUSINESS BROKER REALLY DOES
Think of a business broker as your deal quarterback. They manage everything from the first valuation to the final signature, keeping the process e icient, confidential, and aligned with your goals.
Our services typically include:
• Business valuation and exit strategy planning
• Creating a professional, confidential o ering memorandum
• Identifying and marketing to targeted, pre-screened buyers
• Managing buyer inquiries and conducting background vetting
• Facilitating negotiations and term sheet discussions
• Overseeing due diligence, legal coordination, and closing
Most importantly, brokers serve as an objective third party— removing emotion from the process and ensuring you make informed, strategic decisions every step of the way. We understand selling your business isn’t just a transaction—it’s a transition. One that will define your financial future and the legacy of everything you’ve built. The right buyer can carry your business forward. But finding that buyer, protecting your interests, and closing the right deal requires more than instinct—it requires expertise. And that’s why, for most owners, hiring a business broker isn’t just smart—it’s essential.
