Does Testosterone Improve Your Sex Drive?
How TRT can improve Libido for men with Low Sex Drives
Testosterone plays a key role in regulating libido (sexual desire) in both men and women, although it is more commonly associated with male sexual health. Testosterone levels tend to decrease with age. They peak by early adulthood and then can drop by up to 1% per year beginning in the mid 20’s for most men. But what is the relationship between testosterone levels and Low Sex Drive in Men? How can one raise their testosterone levels? Here's how testosterone may help improve libido:
Brain Function: Testosterone influences certain areas of the brain related to sexual desire and arousal. It can enhance the brain's sensitivity to sexual stimuli, making individuals more responsive to sexual cues. Kaplan, who famously penned the book “ Disorders of sexual desire” proposed a triphasic model Phase one being sexual desire, Phase 2 being excitement and Phase 3 is the orgasm. Kaplan argued that all three phases are interconnected, however they are governed by separate neurophysiological systems. There are several key brain regions that are associated with specific aspects of human sexual behavior. These are both the subcortical and cortical regions, as well as the mesial temporal lobe and the amygdala. These are all important structures in the mediation of libido, arousal, and the human sex drive. There are psychological factors such as depression, stress and anxiety, for example, that may also play a role in negatively impacting libido. These emotions may activate the area of the brain called the amygdala, which is part of the limbic system, which can either activate or even inhibit sexual desire and arousal. Happiness, success and other positive feeling and emotions may help improve one’s sex drive whereas stress and depression may lower it.
Mood and Confidence: Testosterone can have a positive impact on mood and confidence. When testosterone levels are optimal, individuals often feel more self-assured and less anxious, which can contribute to a higher libido. No matter what the cause is, a poor image of one’s self can be very damaging to an individual or couple's sex life. When a man focuses on certain
psychological factors that may be unrelated or out of their control, such as job stress or their partners perceived perception of them, performance anxiety may develop. This may initiate a negative cycle, or performance loop of repetitive sexual failures and will slowly but surely crush one’s self-esteem. Fixing this problem requires serious attention to its roots and can corrected but may require honest conversations about a very sensitive personal issue which may be difficult for even the most open couples.
Energy and Stamina: Higher testosterone levels can lead to increased energy and physical stamina, which can translate into improved sexual performance and a greater willingness to engage in sexual activity. With confidence comes increased self-esteem and positive feedback cycle may begin. Taking testosterone causes physical changes to the body such as increased lean muscle development and the loss of unwanted fat. This may help a man feel as if their appearance makes them more attractive and sexier to their partner making them feel more sexually desirable. A self-fulfilling assessment so to speak that leads to an improved libido. In a book published by Harvard called “Sexuality in mid-life and beyond” they touch upon the subject of creating intimate experiences without pressure to perform which is possibly the biggest barrier for men to hurdle as they age and one that improved testosterone levels can help fix.
