nourse farms has grown significantly in 90 years – thanks to our loyal customers, our dedicated, hard-working employees, and the national and international small fruit communities! In 1970, we were a strawberry nursery selling less than 1 million plants per year, of about 15 varieties. In 2021 we are an internationally recognized small fruit nursery selling more than 30 million strawberry plants of 30+ varieties per year, in addition to raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, currant, gooseberry, elderberry, asparagus, rhubarb, and horseradish plants.

Strawberries: Keys to Success Sunlight: Direct for at least 8 hours per day Soil pH: 6.5–6.8 Spacing: 12–18” in the row, 3’–4’ between rows June-bearing strawberry plants bear fruit one year after planting. Day-neutral/Everbearing strawberry plants begin bearing fruit approximately 12 – 14 weeks after planting, depending on conditions. Plant as soon as possible in the spring, after the soil has warmed to 500 F. Planting at the correct depth is very important. Plant with the middle of the crown level with the top of the soil and roots straight down. (see illustration on next page) Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, brambles, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which will affect the health and performance of your new plants. Do not mulch with materials like decayed/wet leaves or grass clippings. We recommend approximately 4” of clean straw or salt marsh hay after the plants have gone dormant. Do not renovate day-neutral/everbearing strawberries, or June-bearing in the planting year.

chooSinG a VarieTy

One of the top questions we field from growers is “What varieties should I grow?” This is one of the most important decisions a grower can make. Since these are primarily perennial crops, they can be a long-term investment, making it difficult to change varieties once established. We encourage you to plan your variety mix early, and order as soon as possible to ensure the best selection and timely planting. We also strongly suggest trialing a variety at your location before planting on a large scale. Variety performance is indicative of conditions under which they are grown – a “dog” for one grower might be another’s “blue ribbon” variety. With over several dozen varieties available in the marketplace today, there are many options to consider.

Trial Planting at nourse Farms

We maintain open dialogue with plant breeders around the world. In our trials, we grow and fruit their varieties to give feedback to the breeder and to determine their value to our customers. We evaluate fruit flavor, size and yield, as well as the equally important qualities of plant vigor and disease resistance. If a variety shows promise, we conduct larger trials by distributing plants to a wide group of cooperating fruit producers, collect and analyze additional data, and then decide if the variety should join our list of plant offerings to all customers.

Two varieties that have been trial planted at Nourse Farms: Yambu (above) and Dickens (right)

common Questions we ask Growers who are deciding on Varieties

How do you plan to market the berries? Wholesale growers require a large berry which is firm, and will hold in refrigeration for a longer time. For many pick-your-own farms, flavor and fruit quality are top considerations. For bramble growers, red raspberries have been the mainstay but we see an increasing interest in black and yellow raspberries, as well as blackberries. Where are you located? In northern areas (zones 3 - 5), winter-hardiness is key. Conversely, in zones 7 and 8, fruit varieties should be selected which can handle intense summer heat. We list the zone range for every variety we sell in this catalog. What are the field conditions? A good disease resistance package is a priority for farms that have grown berries for many years with limited land for rotation, or that have heavy, wet soil. How long do you want to be picking berries? Some strawberry growers want the longest season extension possible. For those, we recommend very early varieties like AC Wendy, a mid-season variety, and then our latest June-bearing variety, Malwina. Add day-neutral varieties like Albion and Seascape, and you’ll be picking strawberries in the late spring as well as into the fall. Other operations prefer strawberries for a shorter window of time. In those cases, highly productive varieties like Galletta, Honeoye and Jewel are options. For brambles, are you looking for summer production, fall production or both? This catalog is organized by Summer (Floricane) and Fall (Primocane) fruiting varieties. We also note which varieties are great for double-cropping. Are you growing on a matted row or plasticulture system? Many of the varieties we sell should grow well in either system. AC Wendy, Galletta, Darselect, Flavorfest & Cabot are varieties that have performed particularly well in the plasticulture system, however softer fruit varieties like Earliglow or Sparkle should be avoided. In the matted row system, varieties that are vigorous and runner well are of interest, from a plant stand perspective, for filling out the row.

Strawberry Production Systems

Another common question we hear from first-time strawberry growers, as well as existing growers looking to expand their acreage, is “what’s the best production system?” Should they choose a traditional matted row system or consider plasticulture? Ultimately the best system is based on the unique needs of your operation. Below we have outlined, based on grower experience, and fruit production at Nourse Farms, the pros and cons of each system.

Matted Row

Pros: • Long established successful and profitable system that is widely planted throughout the northern U.S., particularly pick-your-own operations. • Low initial investment costs with estimated plant density at 8,800 plants per acre. No need for plastic; flexibility in irrigation systems. • Proven adaptation to colder climates versus plasticulture. Cons: • Weed control can be difficult, particularly in the establishment year, due to the lack of effective herbicides. • Lower picking efficiency as fruit is not easily accessible compared to the plasticulture system. • Yields can vary dramatically from 3,000 – 20,000 pounds/acre depending on management practices. • Managing row width and plant density requires more labor in order to ensure plants do not become overpopulated.

Plasticulture

Pros: • Earlier picking date due to warmer soil conditions in the spring Increased picking efficiency of at least 20%, lowers long term costs. • Weed control is simpler, limited primarily to between rows. • Bigger berries with longer shelf life, particularly with the use of straw mulch. • Higher consistent yields: 16,000+ lbs. per acre. Cons: • Higher upfront costs. In addition to plastic and drip irrigation, higher plant density of 15,000 plants/acre. • Bare root plants must be planted by hand. Plug plants can be machine planted but are more expensive. • Trickier establishment due to planting in summer heat. • Most Plasticulture growers’ fruit for only 1–2 years as opposed to 2–3 with matted row. • Winter injury risk may be higher because plants sit higher. Use of straw mulch for winter protection is a must in northern areas.

Keys to Success

Plants Required Per Acre

The Nourse Farms Strawberry Plug Plant System

In the production system we use, the plugs are grown with best practices to produce the most disease-free plugs. Our strawberry mother plants are greenhouse-grown in a substrate system for effective disease management. The tips from these plants are then planted into 50-cell plug trays and, with a misting irrigation system in place, grown into finished plug plants. Why Use Strawberry Plug Plants? An option for plasticulture growers, strawberry plug plants: • are planted in the late summer to be fruited the following spring; and • can be planted into plastic using a mechanical transplanter rather than by hand.

Strawberry Tray Plants & Long Cane Bramble Plants For Growing in Substrate

We are delighted to report that we are expanding our contract propagation for large commercial growers this coming season. Both of these new forms of berry plants are grown to be fruited in a soilless (substrate) system. They are planted into 100% COIR or a COIR/PEAT mix to achieve the best results for rooting and maintaining the root systems for the production cycle. An important component is the computer system that monitors the number of watering’s each day and the PPM or Electrical Conductivity (EC) of the fertilizer that is injected into each watering. Computer injection systems have been developed to accomplish these requirements for both large and small productions. One dependable way to experience the use of strawberry tray plants is to set up a field with tabletops and crop covers over the rows. Grow bags are placed on the table-tops and tray plants are planted into the bags. Then, 55 to 60 days later, fruit production begins. Below: Long cane production Right & below right: Tray plant production.

12

Order by phone (413) 665-2658 • Fax (413) 665-7888

The tabletops could also be installed in tunnels with day neutral varieties to maximize production. Once this system is set up with the initial investment, you have a permanent area to produce strawberries. An important note: We have planted the strawberry tray plants into soil and have experienced that it does not work. The plant is not able to access nutrients in the soil as opposed to a hydroponic system. The opportunity with long canes is the same. Many growers are now planting raspberries in the soil in high tunnels. To get away from growing in soil, long canes are potted up from the initial 1.8-liter growing pot into a 7-liter pot, to produce the crop of fruit.

consider the many ways to market your berries! u-Pick

Not only a great source for local berries, Pick-Your-Own operations or U-Pick, are a great entertainment opportunity for families. Millennials, in particular, enjoy the family time in the field. Let’s not forget those who pick not only for fresh use but canning and freezing!

roadside Stands

With the busy world we live in, roadside stands give the consumer the ability to purchase local produce with the convenience of pre-picked. For growers, it’s one of the easiest marketing opportunities to start out as you can begin small and grow the size of your stand as your customer base expands!

cSa (community Supported agriculture)

CSA’s are one of the fastest growing marketing avenues, particularly for growers who do a wide variety of crops through the season. By purchasing a full season of shares, customers provide you with cash flow when you really need it. We hear from many CSA growers that small fruit is an integral part of their offerings for the season.

Farmer’s markets

A staple for growers for many years, Farmers’ Markets continue for their popularity in towns and cities, small to large. Whether it’s one crop or a dozen you bring, growers find this a great way to move their product in a short time frame.

don’t forget Social media!

Social Media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube have become important tools in marketing product whether it’s U-Pick, Roadside Stands, CSA’s or Farmers’ Market.

commercial Growers At Nourse Farms, we make it our business to ensure every customer receives the healthiest plants. With our own tissue culture lab—one of the most advanced in the country—we are the top supplier of indexed, virus-tested small fruit plants.

All our material is tested through the National Clean Plant Network, and we have our own program to test all foundation stock for virus through indexing. Once stock plants have tested free of virus, meristems are taken from our clean plant facility and used to begin the tissue culture program, in conformance with all state and national guidelines.

Tissue culture is a means of producing whole plants from pieces of plant tissue. Through tissue culture, we can produce virus-indexed plants, offering the cleanest stock possible.

From the lab, plantlets are taken to the greenhouse where they are grown in soilless medium. These plug plants are the foundation stock for our strawberry and raspberry nurseries. Certain dormant raspberry and blackberry plug plants are sold directly to the customer.

The Nourse Difference

a healthy investment

For nursery production, tissue culture plants are planted into fumigated soil, and fields are well maintained with consistent irrigation, pest control and fertility. This leads to optimal level of growth right up to harvest—the healthier the plants are in our fields, the better they will perform for you.

We don’t just sell the best quality plants, we pack them with the utmost care and ship at the best time for your growing zone. Our customers receive dormant, bare root plants and tissue culture plugs in the best possible condition to ensure their growing success. We treat each order with care, and you’ll know it when you receive our plants!

Planting Guidelines

healthy berry plants require these important elements We recommend reading our free Planting & Success Guide at NourseFarms.com 1—3 months in advance for optimum site preparation.

Site Selection

• A sunny, weed free location with at least half-day of sunlight is ideal. • Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. • Plants require a well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds. • Check for proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements (see page 11) can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting by using our pH meter (sold on page 17) or contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance. • Maintain necessary crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes which may affect your new plants.

Planting Know how

Planting time is critical. We recommend planting when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. We recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart below. We do not recommend fall planting. • Be careful on planting depth. Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow. Pack soil firmly around the roots. • Do not fertilize at planting. Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. • It is not necessary to soak plants for more than 1 hour prior to planting. Keeping plants soaking for an extended time can be detrimental. We have

had great success giving berry plants a boost with Agrigel (available for purchase on page 16).

Plant maintenance

• We recommend weeding every 7 – 14 days. Clean beds that are frequently weeded assist in plant establishment and growth by removing competition for water and soil nutrients. • Water well one to three times a week, not every day. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the plant establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds, particularly if on plastic.

• Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow. • Pack soil firmly around the roots. • Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. • Water well one to three times a week, not every day. • Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. • Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour! EARLY SEASON Prelude is the earliest ripening summer red raspberry, ripening in mid-June under most northern conditions. In addition to its excellent first summer crop, Prelude can bear a second crop in the fall, making it a great double-cropping option in warmer regions. Berries are round, cohesive, and have very good flavor. Winter-hardy and vigorous, Prelude is an excellent choice when early fruit and quality are desired. boyne

EARLY SEASON Released in 1960, Boyne is an early-season variety that is extremely winter-hardy, growing in areas other varieties experience winter injury. It consistently produces deep-red, medium-sized berries. The sweet, aromatic flavor makes it great for freezing and jam. A top home garden variety! Zones 3–7 Bare root • 5 for $22.00 | 25 for $76.00

Raspberries: Keys to Success Sunlight: Direct for at least 8 hours per day Soil pH: 6.5–6.8 Spacing: 18”–24” in the row for red and yellow raspberries, 20”–24” in the row for black raspberries, 8’–12’ between rows depending on machinery Avoid planting raspberry plants in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, or peppers. Soak bare root plants for up to 2 hours prior to planting. Agri-gel™ can be added to water – see catalog insert for order information. Planting • Bare root: Take care while planting to keep roots at a 2” depth to allow easy sucker development from the roots. • 32 Plug/Liner: Plant ½ - 1 “deeper than the soil level of the plant. Mulch lightly with weed seed free straw during establishment to help control weeds and help the soil retain moisture. Leaves, grass clippings and wood bark are not recommended as they may become matted or too heavy, impeding growth of new canes. Bare Root Plant

72 Plug/Liner Plant

Floricane (summer-bearing) raspberry plants bear fruit one year after planting. Those second-year canes are pruned out after summer harvest. Primocane (fall-bearing) raspberry plants bear some fruit the first fall of planting year, and either summers or falls after that depending on how they are managed. Most fall-bearers will produce the best crop if canes are cut down each year and only allowed to fruit in the fall. Trellising raspberries is one of the most important cultural practices. It doesn’t have to be expensive and time consuming. A simple T-bar post with twine (see illustrations at right) will do.

Blackberries: Keys to Success

Sunlight: Direct for at least 8 hours per day Soil pH: 6.5–6.8 Spacing: 3’ - 4’ within the row, 8’–12’ between rows depending on machinery Avoid planting blackberry plants in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, or peppers. Soak plants for up to 1 hour prior to planting. Agri-gel™ can be added to water – see catalog insert for order information. Planting: 32 Plug/Liner – Plant ½–1 “deeper than the soil level of the plant. (photo below right) Mulch lightly with weed-free straw during establishment to help control weeds and the soil retain moisture. Mulching is necessary in zones 5 & 6 for winter protection. Floricane (summer-bearing) blackberry plants bear fruit one year after planting. Second-year canes are pruned out after summer harvest. Primocane (fall-bearing) blackberry plants bear some fruit the first fall of planting year, and either summers or falls after that depending on how they are managed. Most fall-bearers will produce the best crop if canes are cut down each year and only allowed to fruit in the fall. Trellising blackberries is one of the most important cultural practices. We suggest plants be supported by a 5-wire trellis or put into staked-hill system. (diagram above right)

Asparagus: Keys to Success

Sunlight: Direct for at least 8 hours per day Soil pH: 7.2 or higher Spacing: 12”–14” in the row for green varieties, 6”–8” in the row for purple varieties, 5’ between rows for green or purple varieties. Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing. VERY IMPORTANT: Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustment before you plant. Till in lime any time prior to planting. It is best to incorporate bone meal or super phosphate into the soil at the bottom of the planting trench. Plant in furrows 8” deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6–8” deep. If frosted, tips become brown. Remove the spear immediately to prevent further setback of the planting. During harvest, asparagus roots need about 2”–3” of water per week. Do not let the soil get too dry. Asparagus grows tall with fern-like foliage which could make an attractive garden border or backdrop. Download our free Planting & Success Guide at noursefarms.com Scan code to visit our website
