Our plant propagation program has been enhanced by the acquisition of two new farms, neither of which have ever been planted with strawberry or raspberry plants. These virgin lands have begun to yield very healthy and vigorous plants, including nearly half of our 2012 strawberry plant crop. These new soils will be planted over the next three years, allowing us the opportunity to offer the best plants for years to come.

Our theme, ”locally grown starts at home” is an idea to help people who want to be more self-sufficient.

We take pride in offering berry plants that produce during the entire summer and into the fall. Many customers rave about abundant harvests and plants that yield the first season from our selections. Nutraceuticals/Phytochemicals Nutraceuticals are substances that provide a healthy benefit to the human body. High levels of these compounds have been identified in all berries. Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries and currants all have generous quantities of these health-promoting compounds. Currants and gooseberries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bushes’ thorns will keep out unwanted pests.

Strawberries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few varieties will produce berries all season long.

Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants.

Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.

NORTH

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Galletta

U.S. Plant Patent #19,763 Galletta was developed by Jim Ballington at North Carolina State University. Galletta ripens early in the growing season and produces big, attractive, good-quality berries with a glossy finish. Compared to Sweet Charlie, this new variety produces better quality fruit during the same season. We recommend this variety for both home and commercial use. Zones 5-7.

AC Wendy U.S. Plant Patent #18,340 (K96-5 x Evangeline) We highly recommend this variety.

This early-season variety was developed by the Kentville Research Station in Nova Scotia. An Evangeline cross, Wendy’s fruits are larger than Evangeline. The berry is wedge-shaped to conic, with firm, bright, red-colored flesh. Wendy has an excellent fresh flavor. Plants are vigorous and runner well. They are moderately resistant to powdery mildew and red stele, but susceptible to Verticillium wilt and leaf diseases. Frost damage potential, very early flowering. Trials showed Wendy to be highly productive, of good quality, and it held its fruit size throughout the season. Zones 3-8.

Recommended for beginners and home gardeners.

Suited for organic growing. From the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, NY. This hybrid plant has been a top variety for over 20 years. It combines winter hardiness, high productivity, good appearance and color, together with an excellent, firm, large-sized berry. The large berries are easy to pick and produce high yields over a long fruiting season, making it our most consistent berry producer. Home gardeners will also appreciate its excellent freezing quality. Optimum flavor is produced by growing this variety in medium to light soil. Daroyal*

Licensed Variety EXCLUSIVE! Daroyal is our second introduction from the Darbonne-Inotalis breeding program in France.

Daroyal is vigorous with strong rooting capacity.

This variety demonstrates excellent vigor and high disease resistance. Production varies from site to site but is generally ample, with goodsized fruit that holds up well during the season.

Northeaster is prized for its very fine flavor and attractive firm berries. Also noted for its resistance to foliage diseases. Northeaster performs well in heavier soils. Zones 4-8.

NORTHEASTER

(NYUS 256 x Cavendish) A recent release from the NY State Experiment Station, L’Amour has excellent fruit quality. Berries are bright red and firm with excellent flavor. Long, round conic shape with a fancy calyx makes them very attractive. L’Amour is adapted to a wide range of soil conditions and is very vigorous. L’Amour is not the most productive variety but is a good consistent performer. Best in zones 4-8.

Cavendish is the result of a cross between two varieties known for their winter hardiness and attractive, large fruit. It produces high yields that ripen over a long growing season. Excellent flavor and overall quality of the fruit make this variety a good choice for commercial and home use. Cavendish is highly resistant to red stele and has some resistance to Verticillium wilt. Fruit flavor and color are exceptional on this vigorous, southern variety. High yields have been experienced throughout the Carolinas and California, and it holds its berry size well. Chandler is susceptible to anthracnose disease. Grows best in zones 5-8.

Darselect* U.S. Plant Patent #10,402 EXCLUSIVE!

Canadian PBR #97-1063 (Parker x Elsanta) Darselect is a highly productive, widely adapted variety for plasticulture or matted-row production. In our customer survey, 90% rated Darselect as good to excellent for size, color, appearance and plant vigor. Its sweet, tasty fruit was rated very good for flavor and firmness.

Various yield trials reported producing over 20,000 pounds per acre. Depending upon location, Darselect will fruit from early mid-season to mid-season. Very susceptible to leaf scorch. Grows best in zones 4-8.

Donna is our third release from the DarbonneInotalis breeding program in Spain, and is an excellent new mid-season variety. It has highly attractive, shiny, smooth, conic fruit, with a sweet, pleasant strawberry flavor. Fruit size is large, with excellent red color, and it holds its size well throughout the picking season. The berries are darker in color than Darselect. Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries.

Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds.

Apply the straw in mid to late November, just as the soil begins to freeze. We believe 2-3 inches over the entire bed is best. We do not recommend leaves.

Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Clancy is a very vigorous, late mid-season variety, similar season to Cabot or Eros. The berries are round and conical in shape with dark red color and a good flavor. Fruit is firm, similar to Jewel. Clancy is adapted to a wide range of conditions.

Cabot is known for its huge berries, excellent flavor, winter hardiness and disease resistance.

Released by the USDA, Beltsville, MD breeding program, Ovation is a late mid-season, diseaseresistant variety. Fruiting later than Jewel, Ovation produces fruit that is firm, glossy, large-sized, bright red to orange-red in color, with pleasant aromatics and mild flavor. The plant is vigorous, resistant to five strains of red stele and shows good tolerance to foliage diseases. USDA trials show Ovation is especially adapted to plasticulture, and is highly recommended for trial. Ovation joins Eros as a season extender. Grows best in zones 4-8.

Mayflower (EM-995)

U.S. Patent Pending We are introducing Mayflower as a new late midseason variety. Bred by David Simpson at the EMR East Malling Reseach Center, U.K., Mayflower exhibits high production and firm, high-quality berries.

During a very wet fruiting season, Mayflower was identified in our test plots as a variety that performs well under difficult conditions. In our advanced grower trials, 80% of the growers responding to our survey said the variety performed well in their trial and that they would plant again. We highly recommend Mayflower for trial plantings. Grows best in zones 4-7.

Sparkle (Fairfax x Aberdeen) Heirloom quality — recommended for beginners.

The best berry for jam and freezing, Sparkle has been known for flavorful, high-quality, attractive fruit for over 60 years. Do not allow the bed to become too thick and you’ll be rewarded with a nice crop of tasty, medium-sized berries. An extremely vigorous variety, Sparkle is an excellent choice for home gardeners and pick-your-own operations in northern climates. Grows best in zones 3-8.

Recommended for season extension. Released

by Horticulture Research International, E. Malling, England.

This Allstar hybrid promises to set new records in season extension. Eros has been in U.S. trials for over six years and has shown improved color and fruit firmness over Allstar. Eros fruits mid-season to late mid-season – most commonly, just after Jewel. The berries are large and bright red with a blocky shape, above-average flavor and good fruit firmness. Eros performs well in plasticulture and in the matted-row system. Vigorous, resistant to red stele and tolerant of leaf diseases. Zones 4-8.

AC Valley Sunset*

U.S. Patent Pending (formerly KRS-10) This recent introduction was bred by Andrew Jamieson in Kentville, Nova Scotia. AC Valley Sunset is a late-season variety that will ripen 5-7 days later than Cabot. Plant shows good vigor with no apparent foliage disease concerns. Berries are lighter red, shiny and large-sized. Flavor and yield are very good, compared to Ovation. Fruiting season is later than Ovation. With its softer skin, fruit is best suited for local fresh market to extend the season.

U.S. Patent #21, 201 EXCLUSIVE! Dr. Walther Faedi, at the Instituto Sperimentale per la Fruitticoltura, Forli, Italy, released this very late strawberry. Record is an Idea hybrid, with improved red color, berry quality, and overall performance. In our fruiting trials, the first fruit was picked between July 1st and 3rd, the last pick was July 17th. Record is a very vigorous plant with no apparent foliage issues. We highly recommend Record for very late season production. It is the latest fruiting June bearing strawberry available at this time. Commercial growers will want to plant this variety from the Peter Vinson breeding program in Kent, England. Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting.

Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.

Pack soil firmly around the roots.

Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown.

Water well one to three times a week, not every day.

Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established.

Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: 1. Early planting! Plant as early as possible in the spring. Snow or occasional frost will not hurt most new plants (green tissue culture plants excepted), and spring rains will foster growth. Planting in the fall is not recommended in the Northeast and Midwest.

2. A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.

3. Clean beds that are frequently weeded.

4. Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds.

5. Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance.

6.

Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

7. Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Strawberry Planting Tips

Asparagus Planting Tips

Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants.

Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants.

Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries.

Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows.

Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down.

Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing.

Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 to 10 inches deep.

For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 7-8 inches deep.

VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant. Lime may be necessary.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep.

Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed.

Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress.

Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery.

Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat.

Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface.

Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Horseradish Planting Tips Spacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface.

What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush!

Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart.

Patented and licensed varieties Patented varieties, identified by a *, are protected by U.S. patent laws. Licensed varieties are produced under contract by plant breeder. Cannot be propagated without permission. Royalty or usage fees are included in price.

Plant pickup Orders can be picked up in Whately, MA, April 14 through May 25, Mon. through Fri., 8am to 5pm; Sat., 8am to 1pm. Call for other available times.

What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival.

Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants.

Drupelets are held tightly together with a long, narrow plug cavity. Fruit is firm and exhibits less fruit rot and sunscald than other varieties. Fruit needs to be ripe to be removed easily. Earliest ever bearing variety. Originated in Poland.

At least three weeks earlier than Heritage, Polana allows you to grow fall varieties in more northern locations and still produce a great crop. Its berries are highly productive, large, glossy in appearance, coherent, with good flavor. Canes are vigorous and grow shorter than those of Heritage. Ripens early August in southern New England and late July in southern Wisconsin. In most cases, helps fill in the gap between the summer and the other fall varieties. Long-term investment Asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish are all plantings that will continue to yield abundantly for 15 to 20 years if given the proper care. Get ahead of the game with our one-year-old asparagus plants, which meet the nursery standard for two-year-old crowns.

Growers have been impressed at how these bigger crowns are jumping out of the ground sooner than others. The new male hybrids (90%-95% male) resist fusarium crown rot and other diseases that weaken asparagus plants.

rhubarb Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply!

When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring.

A well-balanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

MacDonald Strain

This early red currant variety is known for its highly rated flavor and fruit size. Jonkheer van Tets will outperform other early varieties. Being early, it may be susceptible to late frosts, so site selection is important. In Massachusetts, it matures in early July. Special pruning may also be necessary. The erect bush is easy to pick and has mildew resistance. Grows best in zones 3-7.

Plant currants and gooseberries in well-prepared, weed-free soil that contains at least 3% organic matter.

Planting on a slight slope will facilitate cold air drainage. Avoid southern-facing slopes, since intense sun may injure the plants. Soil pH should be between 6.0 and 6.3.

Set black currants 4 to 5 feet apart in the row. Black currant rows should be spaced no less than 5 feet apart; 8 to 9 feet apart is recommended for home gardeners, and up to 10 feet apart for machine harvesting for commercial production.
