In this year’s catalog, we pay tribute to our late co-founder, Mary Nourse, whose vision and dedication helped shape Nourse Farms into the world-renowned nursery it is today.

Agriculture – where she served as the ﬁrst woman on the Board as well as the ﬁrst woman chair – were testament to her dedication to the farming community.

Mary was a fun-loving and spirited soul, an avid agriculturalist and gardener, devoted and beloved mother, grandmother and wife, an enthusiastic athlete, and a world traveler.

Mary played an important role in the founding of CISA, Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture, helping to craft the grant proposal that led to CISA’s creation in 1993. The launch of the Be a Local Hero, Buy Locally Grown campaign was held in a strawberry ﬁeld at Nourse Farms, and Mary served on CISA’s Board of Directors from 2009 through 2012.

Her passion for raspberries led to the expansion of our berry plant offerings, and her commitment to local agriculture left an indelible mark on the Pioneer Valley and beyond.

Day-neutral/Everbearing strawberry plants begin bearing fruit about 12–14 weeks after planting, depending on conditions. Plant as soon as possible in the spring, after the soil has warmed to 500 F. Planting at the correct depth is very important. Plant with the middle of the crown level with the top of the soil and roots straight down. (see illustration on next page) Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, brambles, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, or peppers. Trial Planting at Nourse Farms

At Nourse Farms, we maintain an open dialogue with plant breeders around the world. In our trials, we grow and fruit their varieties to give feedback to the breeder, and to determine their value to our customers. We evaluate fruit flavor, size, and yield, as well as the equally important qualities of plant vigor and disease resistance. If a variety shows promise, we conduct larger trials by distributing plants to a wide group of cooperating fruit producers, collect and analyze data, and then decide if a variety should join our list of plant offerings to all customers.

STrawberry Tray PlaNTS For SubSTraTe ProDuCTioN

Strawberry tray plants are grown to be fruited in a soilless (substrate) system. One way to experience the use of strawberry tray plants is to set up a field with tabletops and crop covers over the rows. Grow bags are placed on the tabletops and tray plants are planted into the bags. Then, 55 to 60 days later, fruit production begins. The tabletops could be installed in tunnels with day-neutral varieties to maximize production. Once this system is set up with the initial investment, you have a permanent area to produce strawberries. An important note: We have planted the strawberry tray plants into soil and have experienced that it does not work. The plant cannot access nutrients in the soil as opposed to a fertigation system in soilless medium.

The NourSe FarmS STrawberry Plug PlaNT SySTem In the production system we use, the plugs are grown with best practices to produce the most disease-free plants. Our strawberry mother plants are greenhouse-grown in a substrate system for effective disease management. The tips from these plants are then planted into 50-cell plug trays and, with a misting irrigation system in place, grown into finished plug plants.

Site Selection

• A sunny, weed-free location with at least half-day of sunlight is ideal. • Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. • Plants require well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds. • Check for proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can hugely affect your success. Sample the soil before planting, using our pH meter (sold on page 31) or contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance. • Maintain necessary crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora, and nematodes which may affect your new plants.

Planting know how

Planting time is critical. We recommend planting when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. We recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart below. We do not recommend fall planting. • Be careful on planting depth. Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow. Pack soil firmly around the roots. • Do not fertilize at planting. Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. • Do not soak plants for more than 1 hour prior to planting. Keeping plants soaking for an extended time can be detrimental. We have had great

success giving berry plants a boost with Agrigel (available for purchase on the catalog insert).

Plant maintenance

• We recommend weeding every 7 – 14 days. Clean beds that are frequently weeded assist in plant establishment and growth by removing competition for water and soil nutrients. • Water well one to three times a week, not every day. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the plant establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds, particularly if on plastic.

• Make sure soil is well prepared ahead of time. Specific to blueberries; correct pH to 4.5 – 4.8 at planting. • Contact Nourse Farms to make changes to order items or ship dates 7 business days in advance. • Store plants at correct temperature if not planting as soon as you receive them.
