Trial Planting at Nourse farms

The purpose of conducting trials is to examine varieties that have been very recently developed in order to determine their value to our customers. We maintain open dialogue with plant breeders around the world. Often, we grow and fruit their plants with the intention of collecting performance data and making recommendations back to the breeders. We evaluate many characteristics including fruit flavor, size and yield, but also, the equally important qualities of plant vigor and disease resistance. If a variety shows promise, we conduct larger trials by distributing plants to a wide group of cooperating fruit producers, collect and analyze additional data, and then decide if the variety should join our list of plant offerings to all customers.

Plasticulture Production System

We receive many inquiries from commercial growers regarding the use of plasticulture. We have many excellent resources that we can share with you both on our website and as print/CD materials. Please contact us with any questions you may have.

Nourse farms on the Road

We attend several tradeshows each year so that we can be available to meet commercial growers across the country. We have found that face to face meetings with our customers provide a great opportunity for us to work closely with you to determine your plant requirements. See our

website at noursefarms.com for our updated 2020-2021 trade show schedule based on coronavirus situation.

Consider the many ways to market your berries!

u-Pick

Not only a great source for local berries, Pick-Your-Own operations or U-Pick, are a great entertainment opportunity for families. Millennials, in particular, enjoy the family time in the field. Let’s not forget our seniors who pick for not only fresh use but canning and freezing!

Roadside Stands

With busy world we live in, roadside stands give the consumer the ability to purchase local produce with the convenience of being pre-picked. For growers, it’s one of the easiest marketing opportunities to start out as you can begin small and grow the size of your stand as your customer base expands!

cSA (community Supported Agriculture)

CSA’s are one the fastest growing marketing avenues, particularly for growers who do a wide variety of crops through the season. By purchasing a full season of shares, you get cash flow when you really need it. We hear from many CSA growers that small fruit is an integral part of their offerings for the season.

farmers’ Markets

A staple for growers for many years, Farmers Markets’ continue their popularity in towns and cities, small to large. Whether it’s one crop or a dozen you bring, growers find this a great way to move their product in a short time frame.

don’t forget Social Media!

Social Media, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and Pinterest have become important tools in marketing your product whether you are doing U-Pick, Roadside Stands, CSA’s or Farmers’ Market. See past issues of our newsletter in the Commercial Growers section on our website for past social media marketing articles or call us for a consult on social media options to consider!

Looking for ABB raspberry varieties?

At Nourse Farms, we continue to be excited about all four primocane raspberry varieties introduced by Advanced Berry Breeding in the Netherlands – Mapema, Imara, Kweli and Kwanza.

We particularly see lots of promise in Mapema (pictured below), the fourth in the series. Mapema is an early fruiting and easy to grow primocane with a high yield. Ripening time is similar to Polka. This variety produces large, conical fruit with a beautiful, deep colour. Based on not only our trials but grower experience, the raspberries are of excellent quality and easy to pick.

MAPEMA

We also continue to see lots of potential for both Imara and Kwelli, in the northern United States. Imara ripens slightly after Polka with a large, conical, easy to pick berry with exceptional fruit quality. Kweli is an excellent shipping berry for the mid-season with round-shaped fruit that can have a shelf life of ten days or more.

Kwanza, the latest of the four varieties, is best suited to the west coast/ Mexico and is sold out for the coming season. All varieties have a 200 per variety minimum and, given their licensing requirements, please call us at 413-665-2658 for pricing and details on placing an order.
