Released by the Cornell Small fruit breeding program in Geneva, Ny. prelude is identified as the earliest ripening summer red raspberry, ripening in mid-June under New york conditions. Although prelude is also fall bearing, it produces the biggest portion of its crop in the spring. Very winter-hardy and vigorous, prelude berries are round, cohesive, with very good flavor. An excellent choice when early fruit and quality are required. Grows best in zones 4-8.

Recommended for beginners. Released in 1960, boyne is an early-season variety that is extremely winter-hardy. It consistently produces deep-red, medium-sized berries. The medium sweet, aromatic flavor makes it great for freezing and jam. It will grow where other varieties experience winter injury to the canes. best for zones 3-7.

Released in Manitoba in 1961. killarney is especially winter-hardy. It is an early mid-season variety ripening about a week after boyne. It’s medium to large-sized berries have an attractive bright-red color and a good raspberry aroma and flavor. The canes grow upright, are medium-sized and sturdy. This variety would make a great fresh raspberry pie. best in zones 4-7.

NOvA

Released from the Nova Scotia, Canada, breeding program in 1981. Great for beginners. This very winter-hardy variety adapts to all climates and can be used as a summer bearer in the North and a fall bearer in the South. Nova is tolerant of heat and an excellent choice for the upper Midwest and northern regions, where high yields and dependability are required. bright red berries ripen gradually, over a long harvest period. They are firm, medium to large in size and have good shelf life. Canes are vigorous with an upright habit. Recommended for zones 3-8.

U.S. Plant Patent Pending Tested as k06-2, this variety was released by Andrew Jamieson at kentville, Nova Scotia. A cross between Glen Ample and k93-11, the strong canes are thornless and demonstrate moderate winter hardiness. The most popular purple raspberry variety today,

Royalty is very productive. The canes are thorny and tall. The fruit is large, of high quality and is the sweetest of all the purple raspberries. Good for fresh eating and excellent for jams and jellies, Royalty can be picked slightly immature as a firm red berry. eludes spring frost damage, as it is a late-season variety. It has multiple insect resistances, including immunity to the raspberry aphid, which should help to extend the productive life of the planting. Recommended for zones 4-8.

Introduced by peter Tallman, a private breeder in Colorado, Niwot will produce berries in the fall, ripening in late August until frost. It will also produce an excellent floricane crop, ripening slightly earlier than Jewel depending upon location. Niwot is vigorous, highly productive and has attractive, shiny fruit. The flavor has less intensity than Jewel. As the variety is vigorous, it requires trellising and recommended spacing is 3 to 4 feet apart in the row. Niwot has similar winter-hardiness to Jewel. The variety is highly productive, medium-large, glossy in appearance, cohesive, with good flavor. This variety has shorter canes that are vigorous and respond to increased fertilization. Ripens early August in southern New england and late July in southern Wisconsin. In most cases, polana helps fill in the gap between the summer and the other fall varieties. Prune summer raspberries soon after harvest ends. This will reduce disease pressure on new canes and increase production potentials.

U.S. Plant Patent #22,459 ExcluSIvE! bp-1 is a cross between polka and Tulameen developed by the berry plant Company in Italy. The fruit is very high quality, lighter in color than polka, with excellent flavor attributed to the Tulameen parent. plants are moderately vigorous, producing tall, upright canes. Its yield is higher than polka. bp-1 is a primocane variety, but a floricane crop can also be harvested. The primocane crop is at approximately the same time as Caroline. The floricane crop is considered early. We highly recommend the bp-1 variety when production and berry quality is required. bp-1 is licensed exclusively to Nourse farms, Inc. for North America. Most productive everbearer. Caroline has become a standard variety for plant vigor and high quality fruit including a rich, full and intense flavor. Often compared to Heritage, Caroline fruits earlier, is more productive, has a larger berry, and has more tolerance to root rot. Though it does not tolerate high heat and drought, Caroline is widely adapted, growing everywhere from the east Coast to the West Coast. The farther south you grow it, the earlier it will ripen!
