Clearly 2020 has been a year like no other given the eﬀects of Covid 19. Thank you to all our valuable customers who have supported the nursery over the years and a welcome to our many new customers who are diving into growing small fruit for the first time. A special thank you to all our staﬀ at nourse farms who went above and beyond the call of duty this last spring to meet our customer’s needs. This is a time for optimism for all people growing small fruit. for commercial growers, locally grown fruit continues to be consumed in record numbers and we anticipate the demand to continue to be high. for the home gardener, we have seen an unprecedented increase in the number of families adding small fruit to their garden. not only is it a terrific family educational experience, there is also the opportunity to produce flavorful fruits that contain high health benefits. research has determined berries have high levels of antioxidants and other beneficial nutraceuticals. at Nourse farms, we make it our business to ensure every customer receives the healthiest plants. With our own tissue culture lab—one of the most advanced in the country— we are the top supplier of indexed, virus-tested small fruit plants.

All our material is tested through the National Clean Plant Network. We also have our own program to test all foundation stock for virus through indexing. Once stock plants have tested free of virus, meristem from these plants in our clean plant facility are used to begin the tissue culture program, in conformance with all state and national guidelines.

Tissue culture is a means of producing whole plants from pieces of plant tissue. Through tissue culture, we can produce virus-indexed plants, oﬀering the cleanest stock possible.

From the lab, plantlets are taken to the greenhouse where they are grown in soilless medium. These plug plants are the foundation stock for our strawberry and raspberry nurseries. Certain dormant raspberry and blackberry plug plants are sold directly to the customer.

For nursery production, tissue culture plants are planted into fumigated soil while ﬁelds are well maintained with consistent irrigation, pest control and fertility. This leads to optimal level of growth right up to harvest—the healthier the plants are in our ﬁelds, the better they will perform for you.

Just wanted you to know the plants you sent me were beautiful, and in perfect condition. I have never received plants so beautifully packed and in perfect shape. Late Mid-Season

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become overgrown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries. Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. for winter protection, we recommend using 3-4” over the entire bed in mid to late November. We do not recommend leaves. Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deeply. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Information from Cornell trials indicates that Dickens produces large, firm fruit that ripens in late mid-season starting at the end of the Jewel season and continuing for 10 days after Jewel. The fruit has a short conic shape and produces multiple fruiting laterals. The fruit has a good sweet flavor with a bright red skin color and red interior. We have limited experience with this variety, but recommend growers trial it for performance at their location. I plant day-neutrals as an annual crop. After growing Mara des Bois for 2 years now this is the only one we want to grow. The scent and flavor is amazing. The plants are very vigorous and high producing. It’s mid August and we are getting 4 quarts of berries off 100 plants every 3 days. You want to plant these at least a foot apart for airflow. Leaf spot is only issue I’ve had with these plants. I’ve been combating it with Biosafe disease control this year but it’s still an issue. If you’re able to do drip irrigation, that’s the way to go. Healthy berry plants require these important elements We recommend reading our free Planting & Success Guide at noursefarms.com 1 - 3 months in advance for optimum site preparation.

Site Selection • A sunny, weed free location with at least half-day of sunlight is ideal. • Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. • plants require a well-drained soil. for poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds. • Check for proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements (see page 11) can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting by using our pH meter (sold on page 17) or contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance. • Maintain necessary crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens Verticillium, phytophthora and nematodes which may affect your new plants.

Planting Know How planting time is critical. We recommend planting when soil temperatures reach 50 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. We recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart below. We do not recommend fall planting. • be careful on planting depth. plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow. pack soil firmly around the roots.

• Do not fertilize at planting. Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. • It is not necessary to soak plants for more than 1 hour prior to planting. keeping plants soaking for an extended time can be detrimental. We have had great success giving berry plants a boost with Agrigel (available for purchase on page 16).

Plant Maintenance • We recommend weeding every 7 – 14 days. Clean beds that are frequently weeded assist in plant establishment and growth by removing competition for water and soil nutrients. • Water well one to three times a week, not every day. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the plant establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds, particularly if on plastic.

Asparagus Planting Tips

Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves or grass clippings that tend to mat down and can smother plants. do not renovate day-neutral strawberries. Spacing: unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. plant the roots straight down. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

do not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 inches deep. for heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6-8 inches deep. vERy IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH of 7.2. use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant, using lime.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep. do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed. your plants will come with a sample of Viterra Agrigel®. use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress. Spacing: for raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Blueberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! for best results, amend pH levels the year prior to planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide. Excessive sulfur can be toxic. do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration. do not use sawdust or wood shavings as soil amendment as they can lock up Nitrogen and cause excessive water retention. do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride. do not fertilize at planting. do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease. Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. be careful not to plant too deeply.

Currant & Gooseberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! Today’s currant and gooseberry varieties and the varieties Nourse farms carries, have been bred with resistance to White pine blister Rust disease. Check with your local Cooperative extension office or Department of Agriculture for any restrictions on growing Ribes in your area. We cannot ship these plants to parts of Massachusetts and Maine. Spacing: for red, white and pink currants and gooseberries: In-row spacing 3 to 4 feet. between rows: 6 to 8 feet. Choose a sunny location but avoid southern exposure and southern facing slopes since intense sun may injure plants. Maintain a pH between 6.0 – 6.5.

Elderberry Planting Tips elderberries are not drought tolerant. It is important to keep soil moist throughout the establishment period. A pH of 6.0 – 6.8 is required. In-row spacing: 3 to 6 feet. between rows 10 to12 feet.

Frequently Asked Questions When is the best time to order?

How many hours of sun do plants need?

You should reserve your plants as soon as you know what you want, because many varieties end up sold out or with a limited quantity during the spring months. We begin taking pre-orders for the spring in late fall of the previous year.

Berries will ripen best with full sun conditions. The plants will grow fine in partial sun, but sun is very important for ripening the fruit.

When is the best time to plant? This varies by zone. We suggest that you review the hardiness zone map for suggested planting dates, on page 10. If you are unsure of your zone or whether conditions are good for planting, please call us. We sell dormant, bare root plants, which are NOT suitable for fall planting. We don’t typically ship plants in the fall. In the spring, don’t rush! We suggest planting in early spring, after danger of any hard frost, when the soil is warmer than 50 degrees, and drier is better. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil.

How long after ordering can I expect to receive plants?

Can I plant close to “wild” plants? If wild plants are in an area that you can mow down, it is best to do so. If planting near wild plants that you can’t remove, be sure that there are no disease problems as diseases can transfer into the new planting.

How do I test my soil pH? You can purchase pH meter kits from our catalog or website or contact your local Cooperative Extension service for information on testing soil. We also have detailed sampling and testing instructions on our website.

When should I replace old beds? Add new varieties often to keep your berry plantings bursting with new taste and strong performing plants! Be sure to rotate into a new bed to avoid pest and disease issues.

When you place an order on the web, we will list optimal shipping dates for your zone during the checkout process, and you will select the week you want your plants shipped. We ship orders on Mondays and Tuesdays so that customers in all areas of the country will receive their plants in optimal condition by Friday. You should select a ship date that is suggested for your zone.

Are your plants certified organic?

Can I plant in the fall?

We do not produce any genetically modified plants.

We do not recommend planting in the fall in most cases. The best time to plant is in the early spring. We do not ship plants during the fall months.

What do I do with the plants if I am not ready?

We do not grow organically produced planting stock. Many organic growers use our plants which can be certified for organic production after a period of organic care. Check with your organic certifier for more information.

Are your plants genetically modified?

This really depends on how much space you have to plant into, as well as the number of people in your family. Consult our planting guide to determine how much space the plants require.

Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival. Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Tuesday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F.

What varieties are best suited for my area?

How many plants should I start with?

You should call or email us with your question or problem AS SOON AS you notice an issue. Do not wait until the summer months, as it may be too late. We would rather have you call and find out it's not an issue than to lose your plants.

Do you sell plug plants? We sell a limited number of strawberry varieties as plug plants for fall planting to commercial growers. Minimum quantities are required to order. Please call us for details. Our Blackberry and Black Raspberry plants are grown and shipped as plugs.

What varieties can be grown in containers? Day-Neutral strawberries can be grown in hanging baskets or containers.

Rhubarb Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A well-balanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

After planting Mary Washington, a few small stalks poked through the soil. After 2 months, I realize my folly of ordering so many. Most have numerous stalks springing up! I planted 60 to feed my fiancé and me. We might be feeding much of my street. The first stalks were barely 1/8” in diameter. We maintain open dialogue with plant breeders around the world. At Nourse Farms, we continue to be excited about all four primocane raspberry varieties introduced by Advanced Berry Breeding in the Netherlands – Mapema, Imara, Kweli and Kwanza. We particularly see lots of promise in Mapema (pictured the fourth in the series. Mapema is an early fruiting and easy to grow primocane with a high yield. Ripening time is similar to Polka. This variety produces large, conical fruit with a beautiful, deep colour. Based on not only our trials but grower experience, the raspberries are of excellent quality and easy to pick.

We also continue to see lots of potential for both Imara and Kwelli, in the northern United States. Imara ripens slightly after Polka with a large, conical, easy to pick berry with exceptional fruit quality. Kweli is an excellent shipping berry for the mid-season with round-shaped fruit that can have a shelf life of ten days or more. Kwanza, the latest of the four varieties, is best suited to the west coast/ Mexico and is sold out for the coming season.
