At Nourse Farms, we make it our business to ensure every customer receives the healthiest plants. With our own tissue culture lab—one of the most advanced in the country— we are the top supplier of indexed, virus-tested small fruit plants.

All our material is tested through the National Clean Plant Network. We also have our own program to test all foundation stock for virus through indexing. Once stock plants have tested free of virus, meristem from these plants in our clean plant facility are used to begin the tissue culture program, in conformance with all state and national guidelines.

Tissue culture is a means of producing whole plants from pieces of plant tissue. Through tissue culture, we can produce virus-indexed plants, offering the cleanest stock possible.

From the lab, plantlets are taken to the greenhouse where they are grown in soilless medium. These plug plants are the foundation stock for our strawberry and raspberry nurseries. Certain dormant raspberry and blackberry plug plants are sold directly to the customer.

For nursery production, tissue culture plants are planted into fumigated soil while fields are well maintained with consistent irrigation, pest control and fertility. This leads to optimal level of growth right up to harvest—the healthier the plants are in our fields, the better they will perform for you.

AC WENDY* U.S. Plant #18,340 (K96-5 x Evangeline) Consistent performance combined with great flavor. A very consistent performer for many of our customers, we highly recommend this early variety developed by the Kentville Research Station in Nova Scotia. The berry is wedge-shaped to conic, with firm, bright colored flesh and has an exceptional fresh flavor. A productive variety, Wendy holds its fruit size through the picking season. A vigorous variety that runners well, plants are moderately resistant to red stele but susceptible to Verticillium wilt and leaf diseases; performing best on a lighter soil. Being an Earliglow hybrid, Galletta produces attractive glossy fruit with excellent flavor. Galletta produces large berries and holds its size well. The plant is vigorous and shows good tolerance to leaf diseases and red stele. A very successful variety on heavy soils, Galletta is moderately winter-hardy. YAMBU* U.S. Plant Patent #28,048 (Honeoye x E1991-023) Highly vigorous, productive recent release. An early mid-season variety released by Fresh Forward in the Netherlands and bred by Burt Meulenbroek, Yambu ripens in similar timing to Honeoye, one of its parents. The very sweet berries have a bright red color, and are attractive with uniform shape and glossy skin. Growers who have fruited Yambu are impressed with its high productivity and long season! Experience has shown no specific foliage disease pressure, special nutrient or soil type requirements. From the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, NY, Honeoye has been a top variety for over 30 years. It combines winter-hardiness with high yields of attractive, large, firm berries. Recommended for northern growers, Cavendish results from a cross between two varieties known for their winter-hardiness and attractive, large fruit. Mid-Season CHANDLER (Douglas x Cal 72.361-105) Reliable plasticulture variety. Originating in California, fruit flavor and color are very good on this vigorous, southern variety. While holding its berry size, high yields have been experienced throughout the Carolinas and California. FLAVORFEST (B759 x B786) First rate vigor and flavor. Released by Dr. Kim Lewers at the USDA Beltsville Research Center, Beltsville, MD, Flavorfest is adapted to both plasticulture and matted row production. Fruits are an appealing bright red color with an exceptional flavor profile. Berries are large and hold their size through the season but for optimum flavor, avoid growing Flavorfest on light, sandy soils. Plant is vigorous, shows excellent resistance to red stele and leaf diseases with no susceptibility to anthracnose crown or fruit rot being found. With Flavorfest’s high vigor, applications of nitrogen will need to be managed to avoid excessive growth. Adapted for matted row or plasticulture production, Rutgers Scarlet has shown good vigor, tolerance to leaf diseases and responds well to renovation. Clancy is a very vigorous, late mid-season variety, similar in season to Cabot. The berries are round and conical in shape with dark red color and good flavor. MAYFLOWER* (EM-995) U.S. Plant Patent #24,394 EXCLUSIVE! A very weather resistant berry. Bred by David Simpson at the Malling Research Center, U.K. Mayflower is a highly productive, late mid-season variety which develops firm, high-quality berries. During very wet fruiting seasons, Mayflower was identified as a variety that consistently performs well under difficult conditions. CABOT* U.S. Plant Patent #16,971 [(Elsanta x K79-S) x K79-4] High performing, can be a challenge to grow. Cabot is known for its huge berries, excellent flavor, winter-hardiness and disease resistance. It is by far the best big berry ever! Highly recommended for direct marketing growers and home gardeners, Cabot is best adapted for northern locations and where very large fruit size is required. First fruits may split or be rough. Plants are vigorous but closer spacing may be required as the plants do not runner freely. A great variety option for plasticulture systems. DICKENS (NY 02 56)*

(Patent Pending) NEW New and shows high vigor. From Dr. Courtney Weber’s breeding program at Cornell University. Information from Cornell trials indicates that Dickens produces large, firm fruit that ripens in late mid-season starting at the end of the Jewel season and continuing for 10 days after Jewel. The fruit has a short conic shape and produces multiple fruiting laterals. The fruit has a good sweet flavor with a bright red skin color and red interior. We have limited experience with this variety, but recommend growers trial it for performance at their location. In trials in Ontario, Dickens showed good Phytophthora root rot resistance in replant sites and good vigor through renovation. Suited to zones 4–7. 25 for $14.00 • 50 for $24.00 • 100 for $38.50

N NTI G

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become overgrown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries. Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. For winter protection, we recommend using 3-4” over the entire bed in mid to late November. We do not recommend leaves. Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deeply. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

Malwina is a high quality, very late-season variety. Fruits are glossy, and dark red having excellent flavor with elevated Brix readings. Berries are large and hold size well. ALBION* U.S. Plant Patent #16,228 Identified for its combination of flavor and berry size. With high yields of large berries, Albion is fast becoming one of the most popular day-neutral varieties. The fruit are firm with good flavor and red color. A good watering and nutrient program is necessary to attain the high yields this variety is capable of. Increased spacing will allow the fruit to reach maximum size. Albion is resistant to Verticilium wilt, Phytophthora crown rot, and shows some resistance to anthracnose crown rot. A pleasantly unique-flavored berry. Developed by a French breeding program, this everbearing strawberry produces small to medium fruit, containing the highest flavor and fragrance of any everbearer. Berries have an attractive red color with a high gloss. Planted in the spring, Mara des Bois will produce fruit during the summer into the fall. It also produces a good crop the following spring. Though considered a lower yielding specialty variety for home gardeners, it is also good for commercial applications when intense taste and berry fragrance is required. Best flavored day-neutral while also suited for commercial growers. Released by the University of Calfornia Breeding Program in 1992. The standard for flavor in commercial day-neutrals, Seascape is a top performer. Though berries can start smaller, they quickly increase to a large size while maintaining firmness and excellent flavor. Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide (see noursefarms.com) 1-3 months before planting. Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow. Pack soil firmly around the roots. Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown. Water well one to three times a week, not every day. Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established. Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: 1.

Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 50 degrees. One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. We recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.

2. A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight. 3. Clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days. 4. Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds. 5. Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance. 6.

Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

7. Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Strawberry Planting Tips Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants. Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants. Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries. Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows. Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep. Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed. Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress. Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart. Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery. Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Blueberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels the year prior to planting and apply garden sulfur regularly. To establish plants successfully without prior pH adjustments, read our planting guide. Excessive sulfur can be toxic. Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration. Do not use sawdust or wood shavings as soil amendment as they can lock up Nitrogen and cause excessive water retention. Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride. Do not fertilize at planting. Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease.

Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. Be careful not to plant too deeply.

Asparagus Planting Tips

Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing. Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6-8 inches deep. VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant, using lime.

Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat. Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Horseradish Planting Tips Spacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface. Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.

Currant & Gooseberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! Today’s currant and gooseberry varieties and the varieties Nourse Farms carries, have been bred with resistance to White Pine Blister Rust disease. Check with your local Cooperative Extension office or Department of Agriculture for any restrictions on growing Ribes in your area. We cannot ship these plants to parts of Massachusetts and Maine. Elderberry Planting Tips

Elderberries are not drought tolerant. It is important to keep soil moist throughout the establishment period. A pH of 6.0 – 6.8 is required. In-row spacing: 3’ – 6’ Between rows 10’ – 12’.

Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants. Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure. NORTH

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat. Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Take right onto River Road. Nourse Farms is 3 miles south on the right. Going North (from Connecticut, Springfield and Northampton): I-91 North to Exit 22 (marked Whately/North Hatfield). Off ramp, continue north on Route 5 & 10. Take the 3rd right onto Depot Road. Follow 2 miles to stop sign. Turn left, and we are one mile on the left. What is the best time to plant? Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 50 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. A list of our recommended planting dates is available on page 10. If you are at unsure of your Zone or whether conditions are good for planting please give us a call. We do not recommend fall planting. What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready? Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival. Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Tuesday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. Can I pick up my plants? Orders can be picked up in Whately, MA, mid April through late May, Mon. through Fri., 8am to 4:30pm; Sat., 8am to 1pm. Call for other available times. What is Agri-gel? Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants. What is tissue culture? Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease tested micro-propagated cuttings. Why do Nourse Farms plants cost more? 99% of our plants are either first or second generation from our tissue culture facility. Our plants set the bar for health and vigor.

Rhubarb Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A well-balanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

MILLENNIUM Released from the asparagus breeding program of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Millennium is establishing itself to be a high performing variety. Originally thought to be best adapted to heavier soils, various trials and results from our grower surveys indicate it is adapted to a wide range of soil types. In a North Carolina trial, accumulating six years of data, it was the second highest producer on a sandy soil site. In our trial, Millennium has been productive, with high quality spears, is tender and has good asparagus flavor. We highly recommend this variety. JERSEY SUPREME Adapted to temperate, warm and cool climates, field trials show Supreme to have a very high yield potential. Supreme is quite early and cold tolerant. The spear size is more uniform than other Jersey hybrids. It is best adapted to light- to mediumsandy soils. CAWOOD DELIGHT PURPLE PASSION This is a unique asparagus variety. Its attractive purple color, milder flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. In addition, our trials indicate Purple Passion has productive yields. For best performance, plant spacing for Purple Passion is 6 to 8 inches apart in the row instead of the usual 12-inch spacing. This variety is not as vigorous as MacDonald, but has deeper red color and slightly thicker stalks. Cawood Delight has a stout growth habit that will excel in northern areas. Looking for ABB raspberry varieties? At Nourse Farms we continue to be excited about three primocane raspberry varieties introduced by Advanced Berry Breeding in the Netherlands – Imara, Kweli and Kwanza. Imara is the earliest of the three varieties with production falling shortly after Polka. Fruit quality is very good with large, conical, and easy-to-pick berries. Kweli is an excellent shipping berry for the mid-season with round-shaped fruit that can have a shelf life of ten days or more. Kwanza is the latest of the three varieties with large, bright red raspberry color fruit easy to pick with a good shelf life. Each of these varieties has shown, not only in our production at Nourse Farms but with growers throughout the country, to be highly productive with excellent quality. We maintain open dialogue with plant breeders around the world. Often, we grow and fruit their plants with the intention of collecting performance data and making recommendations back to the breeders. We evaluate many characteristics including fruit flavor, size and yield, but also, the equally important qualities of plant vigor and disease resistance. If a variety shows promise, we conduct larger trials by distributing plants to a wide group of cooperating fruit producers, collect and analyze additional data, and then decide if the variety should join our list of plant offerings to all customers.
