At Nourse Farms, we make it our business to ensure every customer receives the healthiest plants. With our own tissue culture lab—one of the most advanced in the country— we are the top supplier of indexed, virus-tested small fruit plants.

We have our own program to test all foundation stock for virus through indexing. Once stock plants have tested free of virus, meristem from these plants in our clean plant facility are used to begin the tissue culture program, in conformance with all state and national guidelines.

Tissue culture is a means of producing whole plants from pieces of plant tissue. Through tissue culture, we can produce many virus-indexed plants from few, offering the cleanest stock possible.

From the lab, plantlets are taken to the greenhouse where they are grown in soilless medium. These plug plants are the foundation stock for our strawberry and raspberry nurseries. Certain dormant raspberry and blackberry plug plants are sold directly to the customer.

For nursery production, tissue culture plants are planted into fumigated soil while fields are well maintained with consistent irrigation, pest control and fertility. This leads to optimal level of growth right up to harvest—the healthier the plants are in our fields, the better they will perform for you.

We don’t just sell the best quality plants, we pack them with the utmost care and ship at the best time for your growing zone. Heirloom quality, wonderful strawberry flavor is this variety’s trademark. Earliglow’s fruit is appealing with very firm, glossy skin and medium berry size and firmness. Size can decrease as the season progresses while its sweet flavor makes it a top choice for fresh eating and freezing.

Recommended for beginners, plants are very vigorous and runner well. This variety has strong resistance to red stele and intermediate resistance to Verticillium wilt. Best suited for zones 4–8.

AC WENDY* U.S. Plant #18,340 (K96-5 x Evangeline) Consistent performance combined with good flavor.

A very consistent performer for many of our customers, we highly recommend this early variety developed by the Kentville Research Station in Nova Scotia. The berry is wedge-shaped to conic, with firm, bright colored flesh and has an exceptional fresh flavor. A productive variety, Wendy holds its fruit size through the picking season.

A vigorous variety that runners well, plants are moderately resistant to red stele but susceptible to Verticillium wilt and leaf diseases; performing best on a lighter soil. Growers should note this variety can be susceptible to frost damage due to its early flowering and may require frost protection.

Rapidly growing in popularity since it’s 2010 release by Dr. Jim Ballington at NC State Univeristy, and being an Earliglow hybrid, produces attractive glossy fruit with excellent flavor. Customers report Galletta produces large berries and holds its size well. The plant is vigorous and shows good tolerance to leaf diseases and red stele. A very successful variety on heavy soils, Galletta is moderately winter-hardy. Suited for zones 4–7.

YAMBU* U.S. Plant Patent #28,048 (Honeoye x E1991-023) Highly vigorous, productive recent release.

An early mid-season variety released by Fresh Forward in the Netherlands and bred by Burt Meulenbroek, Yambu ripens in similar timing to Honeoye, one of its parents. The very sweet berries are a bright red color, attractive with uniform shape and glossy skin. Growers who have fruited Yambu are impressed with its high productivity and long season!

Experience has shown no specific foliage disease pressure, special nutrient or soil type requirements. We recommend Yambu be planted when good plant vigor, high yields and excellent flavor are required. Suited for zones 4-7.

From the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, NY, Honeoye has been a top variety for over 30 years. It combines winter-hardiness with high yields of attractive, large, firm berries.

The fruit is easy to pick and ripen over a long season, making it our most consistent producer.

Recommended for beginners, home gardeners will also appreciate its excellent freezing quality.

Optimum flavor is produced by growing this variety in medium to light soil. Honeoye is a vigorous plant with no soil disease resistance. Also suited for organic growers, it remains our #1 selling early mid-season variety and grows well in zones 3–8.

BRUNSWICK* U.S. Plant Patent #16,859 (Cavendish x Honeoye) An alternative to Honeoye with great flavor.

Rated high in more northern locations, Brunswick ripens similar in timing to Honeoye with outstanding flavor and berry size. Plants show very reliable vigor and disease resistance. It is well adapted for home gardeners, pick-your-own and farm stand sales. Grows best in zones 4–8.

CAVENDISH (Annapolis x Glooscap) Quality and production for northern areas.

Recommended for northern growers, Cavendish results from a cross between two varieties known for their winter hardiness and attractive, large fruit.

Originating in Nova Scotia, this variety produces high yields over a long growing season. Excellent flavor and overall fruit quality make this variety a good choice for commercial and home use.

Cavendish is highly resistant to red stele and has some resistance to Verticillium wilt. Due to the potential for uneven ripening in hot conditions, Cavendish grows best in zones 3–7.

Mid-Season CHANDLER (Douglas x Cal 72.361-105) Reliable plasticulture variety.

Originating in California, fruit flavor and color are very good on this vigorous, southern variety.

While holding its berry size, high yields have been experienced throughout the Carolinas and California. Growers should note Chandler is susceptible to anthracnose disease and is suited for zones 5–8.

FLAVORFEST (B759 x B786) First rate vigor and flavor.

Released by Dr. Kim Lewers at the USDA Beltsville Research Center, Beltsville, MD, Flavorfest is adapted to both plasticulture and matted row production. Fruits are an appealing bright red color with an exceptional flavor profile. Berries are large and hold their size through the season but for optimum flavor, avoid growing Flavorfest on light, sandy soils. Plant is vigorous, shows excellent resistance to red stele and leaf diseases with no susceptibility to anthracnose crown or fruit rot being found. With Flavorfest’s high vigor, applications of nitrogen will need to be managed to avoid excessive growth. Flavorfest is a good option for organic producers and in conditions where optimal plant vigor is required. Grows best in zones 4–7.

A widely adapted variety, Allstar has performed consistently well from the East to central Midwest.

This variety was released by Dr. Courtney Weber of the Cornell Breeding Program in Geneva, NY. Clancy is a very vigorous, late mid-season variety, similar in season to Cabot. The berries are round and conical in shape with dark red color and good flavor. Like Jewel, overall fruit quality is very good for this variety that is adapted to a wide range of conditions. Grows best in zones 4–8.

MAYFLOWER* (EM-995) U.S. Plant Patent #24,394 EXCLUSIVE! A very weather resistant berry.

Bred by David Simpson at the Malling Research Center, U.K. Mayflower is a highly productive, late mid-season variety which develops firm, highquality berries. During very wet fruiting seasons, Mayflower was identified as a variety that consistently performs well under difficult conditions.

Tolerant to red stele, we recommend this variety as it’s a true workhorse! Grows best in zones 4–7.

CABOT

U.S. Plant Patent #16,971 [(Elsanta x K79-S) x K79-4] High performing, can be a challenge to grow.

Cabot is known for its huge berries, excellent flavor, winter hardiness and disease resistance. It is by far the best big berry ever! Highly recommended for direct marketing growers and home gardeners, Cabot is best adapted for northern locations and where very large fruit size is required. First fruits may split or be rough. Plants are vigorous but closer spacing may be required as the plants do not runner freely. A great variety option for plasticulture systems. Suited for Zones 4–7.

DICKENS (NY 02 56)

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become overgrown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries.

Take time to locate good straw mulch.

Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. For winter protection, we recommend using 3-4” over the entire bed in mid to late November. We do not recommend leaves.

Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deeply. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

(Patent Pending) New but shows high vigor.

From Dr. Courtney Weber’s breeding program at Cornell University. Information from Cornell trials indicates Dickens produces large, firm fruit that ripen in late mid-season starting at the end of the Jewel season and continuing for 10 days after Jewel. The fruit has a short conic shape and produces multiple fruiting laterals. The fruit has a good sweet flavor with a bright red skin color and red interior. We have limited experience with this variety, but recommend growers trial it for performance at their location. In trials in Ontario, Dickens showed good Phytophthora root rot resistance in replant sites and good vigor through renovation. Suited to zones 4–7.

Released several years ago from the Rutgers University breeding program and developed by their breeder, Dr. Gojko Jelenkovic, Rutgers Scarlet has shown to be a very promising variety when flavor and quality is required. The fruit is large, firm ad holds its size through the season.

Adapted for matted row or plasticulture production, Rutgers Scarlet has shown good vigor, tolerance to leaf diseases and responds well to renovation. We highly recommend Rutgers Scarlet be trialed to evaluate its performance at your location. Grows best in zones 4–8.

MALWINA®* U.S. Plant Patent #23,246 EXCLUSIVE! One of a kind!

Bred by Peter Stoppel in Germany, Malwina is the latest fruiting June bearing variety we have seen.

Malwina is a high quality, very late season variety.

Fruits are glossy, and dark red having excellent flavor with elevated Brix readings. Berries are large, hold berry size well but regular pickings are suggested to maintain fruit firmness. With its vigorous growth habit, nitrogen fertilizer needs to be managed to avoid excessive vegetative growth.

Malwina shows resistance to mildew and tolerance to Verticillium wilt and red stele. Ripening 7–10 days after Valley Sunset, Malwina is a terrific variety to extend the strawberry season; we pick Malwina in mid-July at our location in Western Massachusetts. Grows best in zones 4–6.

EVIE-2* Patent Applied For Long time day-neutral performer.

Commercial growers will want to plant this variety from the Peter Vinson breeding program in Kent, England. An improvement over Everest, this day-neutral is easier to grow, higher yielding and less sensitive to the warm summer temperatures that shuts down day-neutral production in the East and Midwest. Berries have an attractive red color, good flavor and maintain their size. In fruiting trials here, Evie-2 produced the largest spring crop of any day-neutral variety we have tested to date. Best in zones 4–8.

MARA DES BOIS A pleasantly unique-flavored berry.

Developed by a French breeding program, this everbearing strawberry produces small to medium fruit, containing the highest flavor and fragrance of any everbearer. Berries have an attractive red color with a high gloss. Planted in the spring, Mara de Bois will produce fruit during the summer into the fall. It also produces a good crop the following spring. Though considered a lower yielding specialty variety for home gardeners, it is also good for commercial applications when intense taste and berry fragrance is required. Grows best in zones 4–7.

ALBION* U.S. Plant Patent #16,228 Identified for its combination of flavor and berry size.

With high yields of large berries, Albion is fast becoming one of the most popular day-neutral varieties. The fruit are firm with good flavor and red color. Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide (see noursefarms.com) 1-3 months before planting.

Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.

Pack soil firmly around the roots.

Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown.

Water well one to three times a week, not every day.

Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established.

Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: 1.

Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 40 degrees.

One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. We recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.

2.

A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.

3.

Clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days.

4.

Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds.

5.

Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative extension office for assistance.

6.

Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

7.

Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Strawberry Planting Tips

Asparagus Planting Tips

Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants.

Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants.

Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries.

Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows.

Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down.

Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing.

Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6-8 inches deep.

VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant, using lime.

Gardening Resources Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat.

Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface.

Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep.

Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed.

Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress.

Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart.

Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery.

Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Blueberry Planting Tips IMPORTANT! A pH of 4.5 to 4.8 is required; 5.0 is too high! For best results, amend pH levels before planting and apply garden sulfur regularly.

Excessive sulfur can be toxic.

Do not use leaves or sawdust as mulch. They inhibit hydration.

Do not use fertilizer that contains potassium chloride.

Do not fertilize at planting.

Do not fertilize in late summer or early fall. This could lead to new growth, which is susceptible to winter injury and disease.

Spacing: 4 to 5 feet in the row, with 8 to 12 feet between rows. Be careful not to plant too deeply.

Currants & Gooseberries Planting Tips IMPORTANT! Today’s currant and gooseberry varieties and the varieties Nourse Farms carries, have been bred with resistance to White Pine Blister Rust disease. Check with your local Cooperative Extension office or Department of Agriculture for any restrictions on growing Ribes in your area. We cannot ship these plants to Massachusetts without a permit.

Spacing: For red, white and pink currants and gooseberries: In-row spacing 3’ – 4’; Between rows: 6’ - 8’. Choose a sunny location but avoid southern exposure and southern facing slopes since intense sun may injure plants. Maintain a pH between 6.0 – 6.5.

Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants.

Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.

NORTH

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.

Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Going South (from Greenfield and Vermont): I-91 South to Exit 24 (marked Whately). At the end of the ramp, turn left, cross over I-91 and take first right onto Route 116 South.

What is the best time to plant?

Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting.

What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready?

Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival.

Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. Can I pick up my plants?

Orders can be picked up in Whately, MA, mid April through late May, Mon. through Fri., 8am to 5pm; Sat., 8am to 1pm. Call for other available times.

What is Agri-gel?

Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants.

What is tissue culture?

Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease tested micro-propagated cuttings.

Introduced by Peter Tallman, a private breeder in Colorado, Niwot will produce berries in the fall, ripening in late August until frost. It will also produce an excellent floricane crop, ripening slightly earlier than Jewel depending upon location.

Niwot is vigorous, highly productive and has attractive, shiny fruit. The flavor is reported to have less intensity than Jewel. POLANA* Licensed Variety Earliest everbearing variety. Originated in Poland.

At least three weeks earlier than Heritage, Polana allows you to grow fall varieties in more northern locations and still produce a great crop. Its berries are highly productive, medium-large, glossy in appearance, cohesive, with good flavor. This variety has shorter canes that are vigorous and respond to increased fertilization. Ripens early August in southern New England and late July in southern Wisconsin. In most cases, helps fill in the gap between the summer and the other fall varieties. A great choice for early fall raspberries. Polana needs extra fertilizer in May and June. Zones 3-8.

The fruit is very high quality, lighter in color than Polka, with excellent flavor attributed to the Tulameen parent. Plants are moderately vigorous, producing tall, upright canes. Its yield is higher than Polka. BP-1 is a primocane variety, but a floricane crop can also be harvested. The primocane crop is at approximately the same time as Caroline. In northern areas, the development of these primocane blackberries may allow production in some regions where other blackberry varieties are not winter hardy. After mowing the canes to the ground early in the spring (as with Heritage) the new growth produces flowers in August and berries in September. A very vigorous variety, it grows well in light sandy soils, peat and heavier clay loams and is more tolerant to wetter ground than many other varieties. Reka ripens the same season as Duke, but the berries have better flavor. Berries are an attractive dark-blue color and the plant produces large crops. Tart, tasty, versatile ribes Admired for generations in Europe for their adaptability as plants and their versatility as food, currants and gooseberries – known collectively as ribes – are growing in popularity in this country. Gooseberries are good cooked, and eaten fresh. They offer a tasty alternative to grapes. Both make excellent jams. Currants, which make a refreshing juice, provide more vitamin C than fresh oranges. Hybrid Asparagus

Rhubarb Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A wellbalanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

MILLENNIUM

MACDONALD STRAIN

Released from the asparagus breeding program of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, Millennium is establishing itself to be a high performing variety. Originally thought to be best adapted to heavier soils, various trials and results from our grower surveys indicate it is adapted to a wide range of soil types. In a North Carolina trial, accumulating six years of data, it was the second highest producer on a sandy soil site. In our trial, Millennium has been productive, with high quality spears, is tender and has good asparagus flavor. We highly recommend this variety. Zones 3-8.

This strain provides excellent production for commercial growers and home gardeners. This very vigorous, upright-growing strain produces large, tender stalks and has acceptable red color. Shows resistance to root-rot problems. Zones 4-8.

JERSEY SUPREME The newest release from the New Jersey breeding program.

Adapted to temperate, warm and cool climates, field trials show Supreme to have a very high yield potential. Supreme is quite early and cold tolerant.

The spear size is more uniform than other Jersey hybrids. It is best adapted to light- to medium-sandy soils. Supreme has demonstrated very good rust resistance and is noted for its tolerance to fusarium.

JERSEY KNIGHT Originated in New Jersey.

Jersey Knight is extremely vigorous, has large, succulent spears and quickly attracts a loyal following.

The flavor is excellent, and the plant is resistant to rust, crown rot and fusarium. It also does better in heavy, clay-like soils. Zones 3-8.

PURPLE PASSION

CAWOOD DELIGHT

This is a unique asparagus variety. Its attractive purple color, milder flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. In addition, our trials indicate Purple Passion has productive yields. For best performance, plant spacing for Purple Passion is 6 to 8 inches apart in the row instead of the usual 12-inch spacing. When cooked, the bright purple color is reduced, but when served fresh in salads it provides a colorful and flavorful accent. Zones 3-8.

This variety is not as vigorous as MacDonald, but has deeper red color and slightly thicker stalks.

Cawood Delight has a stout growth habit that will excel in northern areas. It may struggle in areas with long periods of high heat. We have had a lot of positive feedback on this variety from commercial growers and home gardeners. Best in zones 4-7.

PACIFIC PURPLE This variety was bred by Dr. Peter Falloon from Aspara Pacific in New Zealand. This new purple variety is high performing, producing higher yields than Purple Passion as well as many of the green varieties.

It is unique in the way it holds a more dominant deep purple color through the season and it is very tender with a sweet flavor, distinctive from the green varieties. As Pacific Purple produces especially largesized spears, we recommend planting the crowns 8 inches apart rather than at the usual 12 inch spacing.

This practice will produce more normal-sized spears.

We highly recommend this variety. Grows best in zones 3-8.

Horseradish Roots BIG TOP We have selected the strain Big Top for its size, vigor, wide adaptability and resistance to foliage diseases, rust and bacterial spot (all common problems in horseradish). At Nourse Farms we continue to be excited about three primocane raspberry varieties introduced by Advanced Berry Breeding in the Netherlands – Imara, Kweli and Kwanza. Imara is the earliest of the three varieties with production falling shortly after Polka. Fruit quality is very good with large, conical, and easy-to-pick berries. Kweli is an excellent shipping berry for the mid-season with round-shaped fruit that can have a shelf life of ten days or more. Kwanza is the latest of the three varieties with large, bright red raspberry color fruit easy to pick with a good shelf. Trial Planting at Nourse Farms The purpose of conducting trials is to examine varieties that have been very recently developed in order to determine their value to our customers. We maintain open dialogue with plant breeders around the world.

Often, we grow and fruit their plants with the intention of collecting performance data and making recommendations back to the breeders.

We evaluate many characteristics including fruit flavor, size and yield, but also, the equally important qualities of plant vigor and disease resistance. If a variety shows promise, we conduct larger trials by distributing plants to a wide group of cooperating fruit producers, collect and analyze additional data, and then decide if the variety should join our list of plant offerings to all customers.

Nourse Farms on the Road We attend several tradeshows each year so that we can be available to meet commercial growers across the country. We have found that face to face meetings with our customers provide a great opportunity for us to work closely with you to determine your plant requirements.
