ur wet and rainy spring turned into a great growing season, resulting in an excellent crop of plants. We look forward to harvesting and preparing them for shipment to you in 2016. We have added new varieties to our mix, always with an eye to find something that will grow better, be hardier, or help make your production more efficient. A new primocane red raspberry, a primocane blackberry, and a new June strawberry, we hope you will find a selection that is just right for you. Please consider these new additions as an opportunity to realize a longer and tastier season. We confidently acknowledge these are non-GMO and are the result of traditional breeding.

This year’s theme ‘Born on Strong Foundations’ is a testament to our commitment to supply the Best Berry Plants. Our in house tissue culture lab conducts virus indexing and DNA finger printing utilizing molecular techniques, as well as traditional methods. Nourse Farms also sends plant material to third party testers for confirmation. We select meristems from our own virus tested Foundation screen house. The plantlets are propagated under sterile conditions until they are rooted in the greenhouse.

This Foundation stock supplies our plant nurseries that produce the plants we sell. From beginning to end, this process will occur during a 2-3 year period before plants are delivered.

Following the guidelines for a newly proposed national certification process, we have begun to randomly test plantings before they are harvested. This process gives us another level of confidence that the final product hasn’t picked up a virus along the way. Nourse Farm’s dedication to this rigorous testing and production process allows us to deliver the healthiest plants available for longer more productive seasons.

Greetings from Nourse Farms!

Currants and gooseberries provide an excellent low border, and gooseberry bushes’ thorns will keep out unwanted pests.

Strawberries make a perfect ground cover. Planting a few varieties will produce berries all season long.

Elderberry bushes are fast growing and hardy. They typically grow quite large and full with clusters of tiny white flowers in late spring followed by clusters of berries in late summer.

The No Planting Zone is a guideline for all of our plants.

Planting in areas that see little or no sun will lead to plants that will struggle to survive. If plants do survive, the small crop produced will have a lot of disease pressure.

NORTH

The Caution Zone is a place where plants will struggle during high heat months. Because of extra protection from wind and higher temperatures, plants and fruit can get an overdose of sun and heat.

Cane plantings such as blackberries and raspberries will climb fences and trellises and become a lovely ornamental hedge; they will also burst with color in the spring just before bearing their fruit.

Blueberry bushes, excellent for beginners, develop into 4- to 6-foot tall shrubs that turn a brilliant red in the fall.

Natural Albino Pineberry Also Known as Hula Berry ®

As people began travelling more in the 16 and 1700s, they also began moving and trading plants around the world. Strawberry plants from various places ultimately cross-pollinated and created strawberry plants with varying characteristics.

Dr. Hans De Jongh, a Dutch strawberry breeder, working with old pineberry varieties and traditional breeding practices (to increase berry size, yield and overall performance) has recently released a distinct and improved variety, the Natural Albino® Pineberry.

It is not self-fertile…it needs pollen from a different variety to produce its distinctive fruit.

Galletta*

U.S. Plant Patent #19,763 (NCH 87-22 x Earliglow) Galletta was released by Dr. Jim Ballington, NC State University in 2010. Galletta ripens early season and produces large sized berries.

Attractive, glossy fruit has excellent flavor.

Customers are reporting that Galletta is highly productive and holds fruit size well through the season. It is rapidly growing in popularity. The plant is vigorous and shows tolerance to foliage diseases. Being an Earliglow hybrid, it has tolerance to red stele disease. This is a variety that will grow in heavy soil. We highly recommend this new variety to all customers.

AC Wendy* U.S. Plant Patent #18,340

(K96-5 x Evangeline) We highly recommend this variety.

This early-season variety was developed by the Kentville Research Station in Nova Scotia. An Evangeline cross, Wendy’s fruits are larger than Evangeline. The berry is wedge-shaped to conic, with firm, bright, red-colored flesh. Wendy has an excellent fresh flavor. Plants are vigorous and runner well. They are moderately resistant to red stele, but susceptible to Verticillium wilt and leaf diseases. Frost damage potential, very early flowering. Trials showed Wendy to be highly productive, of good quality, and it held its fruit size throughout the season. Zones 3-8.

“Wonderful strawberry flavor” is this variety’s trademark. Earliglow’s fruit has a very firm, glossy skin, medium firm flesh and medium size. Its sweet flavor makes the variety excellent for fresh eating and freezing. Fruit size tends to decrease as the season progresses. Earliglow plants are very vigorous and runner well. Suited for organic growing. From the Cornell Small Fruit Breeding Program in Geneva, NY. This hybrid plant has been a top variety for over 20 years. It combines winter hardiness, high productivity, good appearance and color, together with an excellent, firm, large-sized berry. The large berries are easy to pick and produce high yields over a long fruiting season, making it our most consistent berry producer. Brunswick ripens early mid-season, the same time as Honeoye. Customers responding to our survey rated Brunswick high, especially those in northern locations. The plant shows good vigor and disease resistance. Flavor was rated excellent with good berry size and appearance.

Brunswick is best adapted for home gardeners, pick-your-own and farm stand sales.

(NYUS 256 x Cavendish) A recent release from the NY State Experiment Station, L’Amour has excellent fruit quality. Berries are bright red and firm with excellent flavor. Originated in California.

Fruit flavor and color are very good on this vigorous, southern variety. High yields have been experienced throughout the Carolinas and California, and it holds its berry size well. Chandler is susceptible to anthracnose disease. Grows best in zones 5-8.

Just released by Dr. Kim Lewers at the USDA Beltsville Research Center, Beltsville, MD. Flavorfest is a mid-season variety, adapted to both plasticulture and matted row production. Fruits are an attractive bright red color with an excellent flavor profile. Berries are large and hold their size through the season. Plant is vigorous and shows excellent disease resistance to red stele and leaf diseases. In addition, no susceptibility to anthracnose crown or fruit rot has been found. With Flavorfest’s high vigor, applications of nitrogen will need to be managed to avoid excessive growth. Flavorfest will also be a good alternative for organic producers and in conditions where good plant vigor is required. Highly recommended for trial. Grows best in zones 4-6.

Darselect* U.S. Plant Patent #10,402 EXCLUSIVE! Canadian PBR #97-1063 (Parker x Elsanta) Darselect is a highly productive, widely adapted variety for plasticulture or matted row production.

In our customer survey, 90% rated Darselect as good to excellent for size, color, appearance, and plant vigor. Its sweet, tasty fruit was rated very good for flavor and firmness. Various yield trials reported producing over 20,000 pounds per acre.

Rutgers Scarlet is a new release from the Rutgers breeding program. This variety features outstanding berry quality with exceptional flavor. In our trials we experienced some unpollinated blossoms which resulted in only a moderate yield for Rutgers Scarlet. This was offset somewhat by a high percentage of saleable berries that are firm with an attractive deep red color, slightly conical shape, and some of the best flavor out of any of the varieties that we offer! Clancy* U.S. Plant Patent #16,571 (MDUS 4774 x MDUS 5799) Cornell Breeding Program, Geneva, NY. This variety was released by Dr. Courtney Weber of the Cornell Breeding Program in Geneva, NY. Clancy is a very vigorous, late mid-season variety, similar in season to Cabot. The berries are round and conical in shape with dark red color and a good flavor. Fruit is firm, similar to Jewel. U.S. Plant Patent #24,394 Mayflower is a new late mid-season variety. Bred

by David Simpson at the East Malling Research Center, U.K. Mayflower exhibits high production and firm, high-quality berries. During a very wet fruiting season, Mayflower was identified in our test plots as a variety that performs well under difficult conditions. In our advanced grower trials, 80% of the growers responding to our survey said the variety performed well in their trial and that they would plant again. It is tolerant of red stele.

Most strawberry growers allow their beds to become over grown with too many plants. Maintaining a minimum of 4-6 inches between plants will yield bigger and juicer berries.

Take time to locate good straw mulch. Hay or cheap straw will carry pounds of weed seeds. For winter protection, we recommend using 3-4” over the entire bed in mid to late November. We do not recommend leaves.

Weed often and weed well, do not allow weeds to become established. A big mistake people make is to till the soil too deep. We recommend shallow tilling at 1 inch or less.

The best berry for jam and freezing, Sparkle has been known for flavorful, high-quality, attractive fruit for over 60 years. Do not allow the bed to become too thick and you’ll be rewarded with a nice crop of tasty, small to medium sized berries.

An extremely vigorous variety, Sparkle is an excellent choice for home gardeners and pick-your-own operations in northern climates. Grows best in zones 3-8.

U.S. Plant Patent Pending (formerly KRS-10) This recent introduction was bred by Andrew Jamieson in Kentville, Nova Scotia. AC Valley Sunset is a late-season variety that will ripen 5-7 days later than Cabot. Plant shows good vigor with no apparent foliage disease concerns. Berries are lighter red, shiny and large-sized. Flavor and yield are very good. With its softer skin, fruit is best suited for local, fresh-market to extend the season.

MALWINA

Record*

U.S. Plant Patent #21, 201 EXCLUSIVE! Dr. Walther Faedi, at the Instituto Sperimentale per la Fruitticoltura, Forli, Italy, released this late strawberry.

Record is an Idea hybrid, with improved red color, berry quality, and overall performance. In our fruiting trials, the first fruit was picked between July 1st and 3rd, the last pick was July 17th. Record is a very vigorous plant with no apparent foliage issues. We highly recommend Record for late season production.

Malwina®* U.S. Plant Patent #23,246 Bred by Peter Stoppel in Germany.

Malwina is a high quality, very late season variety (at least 7 days later than Record). Fruits are glossy, and dark red having excellent flavor with high Brix readings. Berries are large and hold berry size well through the season. Regular pickings are suggested to maintain fruit firmness. With its very vigorous growth habit, nitrogen fertilizer needs to be managed to avoid excessive vegetative growth. Malwina shows resistance to mildew as well as tolerance to Verticillium wilt and red stele. Malwina is an excellent variety to extend the strawberry season. Grows best in zones 4-6.

Portola* U.S. Plant Patent #20,552 This is a strong day-neutral variety from California. Fruit is lighter in color than most everbearers and should be harvested before fully red. Avoid Common Mistakes Read free planting guide 1-3 months before planting.

Healthy berry plants require these important elements: Planting time. We recommend planting when soil temperatures exceed 40 degrees.

One of the biggest mistakes is planting in cold and wet soils. As a rule, we recommend planting at least 2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting in the northeast or midwest.

Plants will fail to flourish if roots are too deep or too shallow.

1.

Pack soil firmly around the roots.

2. A sunny, weed-free location with at least a half-day of sunlight.

Do not plant near wild plants or plants whose origins are unknown.

Water well one to three times a week, not every day.

Avoid fertilizer burn by fertilizing only after plants are established.

Do not soak plants in water more than 1 hour!

3. Clean beds that are frequently weeded. We recommend every 7-14 days.

4. Well-drained soil. For poor drainage conditions, consider raised beds.

5. Proper soil pH. Matching soil pH to plant requirements can be a huge factor in your success. Sample the soil before planting and contact your local cooperative

extension office for assistance.

6. Crop rotation. Avoid planting strawberries or raspberries in soils where previous

crops have included strawberries, raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor the soil pathogens Verticillium, Phytophthora and nematodes and may affect your new plants.

7. Irrigation. Maintain proper moisture levels throughout the season and, most importantly, during the establishment period. Drip irrigation is imperative when planting in raised beds.

Strawberry Planting Tips

Asparagus Planting Tips

Avoid planting strawberries in soils where previous crops have included raspberries, potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant or peppers. These crops may harbor soil pathogens, which may affect your new plants.

Do not mulch using materials like decayed or wet leaves that tend to mat down and can smother plants.

Do not renovate day-neutral strawberries.

Spacing: Unless otherwise noted, plant 12 to 18 inches in the row, 3 to 4 feet between rows.

Depth is important — see detailed planting guide. Roots should be planted straight down.

Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Do not add compost to soil until plants are growing.

Spacing: 12 to 14 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows with furrows 8 inches deep. For heavier, clay-like soils, plant 6-8 inches deep.

VERY IMPORTANT! Asparagus requires very sweet soil with pH 7.2. Use soil tests to check and maintain soil pH and phosphorous levels. Make soil pH adjustments before you plant, using lime.

Rhubarb Planting Tips Water well during excessive heat.

Spacing: 3 feet; 5 to 6 feet between rows. Set buds about 1 inch below soil surface.

Maintain a pH between 6.0 and 6.8.

Bramble Planting Tips Avoid planting the roots too deep.

Do not plant green tissue culture plants until the danger of frost has passed.

Your plants will come with one packet of Viterra Agrigel®. Use it at planting to help maintain moisture and establish plants with little stress.

Spacing: For raspberries, unless otherwise noted, 18 to 24 inches for reds and yellows; 20 to 24 inches for blacks. Plant blackberries 3 to 4 feet apart.

Between rows, leave 8 to 12 feet depending on machinery.

Maintain a pH between 6.5 and 6.8.

Horseradish Planting Tips Spacing: 10 to 12 inches between plants, 3 feet between rows. Plant at 45-degree angle with flat end facing up; the flat end should be about 1 inch below the soil surface.

Maintain a pH between 6.2 and 6.7.

What is the best time to plant?

Don’t rush! Waiting until the soil is warmer, above 40 degrees, and drier is best. The biggest mistake growers make is planting in cold and muddy soil. As a rule, we recommend planting 1-2 weeks after the earliest date on the zone chart. We do not recommend fall planting.

What do I do with the plants if I am not quite ready?

Plants are easily stored in the bottom of the refrigerator up to 1 week after arrival.

Keep plants in the shipping bags and keep the bags sealed. Call us to delay shipping by the Friday before they are scheduled to ship. 90% of all orders shipped are loaded Monday morning by 9am. Do not store below 28˚F. Can I pick up my plants?

Orders can be picked up in Whately, MA, mid April through late May, Mon. through Fri., 8am to 5pm; Sat., 8am to 1pm. Call for other available times.

What is Agri-gel?

Agri-gel is a polymer that absorbs many times its weight in water. It helps all plants get established easier, it is especially helpful for raspberry plants. We include a sample in every shipment that is enough for 25 strawberry or raspberry plants.

What is tissue culture?

Tissue culture is a propagation method that ensures virus and disease free plants. Since 1980, all of our planting stock begins as virus and disease tested micro-propagated cuttings.

U.S. Plant Patent #22,449 Prime-Ark® 45 is a thorny, primocane-bearing blackberry with an erect growing habit. Primocane berries are medium-sized while floricane fruit is larger. Trials indicate the variety is very productive. Fruit holds up well after picking and is suitable for shipping. The floricane fruiting season is after Natchez and before Ouachita. Early indications are that the primocane crop ripens later than Prime-Jim. Ripening may be too late for some northern areas, but will extend the blackberry season in regions with a long enough growing season. We would recommend PrimeArk® 45 as an outstanding primocane-bearing blackberry.

Reka, an early-season blueberry variety bred in New Zealand, is one of the fastest growing and most adaptable varieties we have seen. A very vigorous variety, it grows well in light sandy soils, peat and heavier clay loams and is more tolerant to wetter ground than many other varieties. Reka ripens the same season as Duke, but the berries have better flavor. Berries are an attractive dark-blue color and the plant produces large crops. Its winter hardiness is rated equivalent to Duke. Reka, with its lovely red and burgundy fall foliage, may grow 4-6 feet tall, and is a great addition to the lansdcape! Northland has excellent winter hardiness. It has produced a consistent crop following winter temperatures as low as -30°F. The medium-sized berries are very flavorful — similar to wild blueberries.

Jersey Supreme

Long-term investment Asparagus, rhubarb and horseradish are all plantings that will continue to yield abundantly for 15 to 20 years if given the proper care. Get ahead of the game with our one-year-old asparagus roots, which meet the nursery standard for two-year-old crowns. Growers have been impressed at how these bigger crowns are jumping out of the ground sooner than others. The new hybrids resist fusarium crown rot and other diseases that weaken asparagus plants.

This is a unique asparagus variety. Its attractive purple color, milder flavor and tenderness distinguish this variety from others. Originated in New Jersey.

Jersey Knight is extremely vigorous, has large, succulent spears and quickly attracts a loyal following.

The flavor is excellent, and the plant is resistant to rust, crown rot and fusarium. It also does better in heavy, clay-like soils. Zones 3-8.

Purple Passion

Rhubarb is very easy to grow. Plant 3 feet apart in well-prepared soil, with the top of the division level with the soil surface. Do not plant too deeply! When the plants are established, fertilize liberally with manure and garden fertilizer. For continued success, follow this procedure each fall and spring. A wellbalanced fertility program is necessary for optimum results. Soil pH should be 6.0-6.8.

This strain provides excellent production for commercial growers and home gardeners. This very vigorous, upright-growing strain produces large, tender stalks and has acceptable red color. Shows resistance to root-rot problems. Zones 4-8.

Adapted to temperate, warm and cool climates, field trials show Supreme to have a very high yield potential. Supreme is quite early and cold tolerant.

Pacific Purple

This variety was bred by Dr. Peter Falloon from Aspara Pacific in New Zealand. This new purple variety is high performing, producing higher yields than Purple Passion as well as many of the green varieties.

It is unique in the way it holds a deep purple color through the season and it is very tender with a sweet flavor, distinctive from the green varieties. As Pacific Purple produces especially large-sized spears, we recommend planting the crowns 8 inches apart rather than at the usual 12 inch spacing. Tart, tasty, versatile ribes Admired for generations in Europe for their adaptability as plants and their versatility as food, currants and gooseberries – known collectively as ribes – are growing in popularity in this country. Gooseberries are good cooked, and eaten fresh. They offer a tasty alternative to grapes. Both make excellent jams. Currants, which make a refreshing juice, provide more vitamin C than fresh oranges. Ribes can handle long cold winters, and have excellent shelf-life. They can stay on the vine for up to two weeks, and store well in the refrigerator.

Some states have restrictions on growing ribes (currants and gooseberries). Prior to ordering, please contact your Local Extension Office or Department of Agriculture to determine if there are restrictions in your state.

Originated in Holland.

This early red currant variety is known for its highly rated flavor and fruit size. Jonkheer van Tets will outperform other early varieties. Being early, it may be susceptible to late frosts, so site selection is important. In Massachusetts, it matures in early July. Special pruning may also be necessary. The erect bush is easy to pick and has mildew resistance. Grows best in zones 3-7.

Rovada is a red currant with very large fruit on extremely long strigs, producing a heavy crop that is easy to pick. The plant is very free of mildew and other leaf diseases. Its late flowering escapes frost.

Samdal Elderberry

This is one of several more recent elderberry varieties from Denmark. Plants are vigorous, producing long shoots from soil level one growing season and bearing fruit the next. These are removed after bearing and replaced by the current year’s growth. This makes the bush easy to prune and manage. Large fruit clusters ripen in August each year. Berries have very high anthocyanin content are very good for you! This is the more productive variety, but both varieties are required for cross pollination in a ratio of 1 Samyl: 5 Samdal.
