A LASTING LEGACY FOR NOTTINGHAM GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL

““Thank you, because even the thought of investing in someone’s education, we might think it’s just investing in one person, but I think investing in one person’s education is investing in society as a whole.”
Aminah Jimoh BURSARY RECIPIENT CLASS OF 2024

Since 1875 we have educated generations of women. We know from your letters and emails, and when we meet you in A block to welcome you back to school, or at a reunion, how appreciative you are of your NGHS education.
Like so many who were awarded bursaries, Direct Grants or Assisted Places, we want future generations to be able to benefit from the same opportunities. As Aminah says, the benefits of a bursary award extend beyond those who receive them, they enrich the whole school and the wider community.
So as our landmark 150th anniversary approaches, we continue with our passion to support a ‘girls first’ education that is progressive, creative and different, and places girls at the front and centre in everything we do.

Our outstanding Independent Schools Inspectorate report confirmed that our school really does live and breathe our ethos of empowering girls for extraordinary lives.
The Bursary Fund enables us to provide these girls with our incredible education by covering their school fees. By making a provision for the school in your will we can help more girls benefit from an NGHS education empowering them to succeed in what they wish to do.

Mrs Julie Keller Head
Remembering NGHS in your will is one of the most personal and significant ways you can help. The gift of education is perhaps the most precious gift anyone can bestow. Once made, it can never be taken back. It’s the key that unlocks all doors. Gifts may be directed towards a specific area, or left without limitations to be allocated wherever NGHS needs it most.
As we look forward to celebrating 150 years of Nottingham Girls’ High School, we hope you will consider supporting us in providing bursaries for gifted girls.

LEGACY GIFTS
Legacy gifts often take the form of a specific sum of money, or a proportion of a person’s estate. All legacy gifts, whatever type or size, play a vital role in our work and can have a transformative impact. If you have already pledged a gift to us in your will, thank you; we would love to know so we can include you in the GDST Minerva Circle, a special society for those who have pledged a legacy to the GDST or a GDST School. Please do so via the tear-off form or by completing the online form here www.gdst.net/legacies
NGHS is part of The Girls’ Day School Trust, which is a registered charity (no.306893), and by leaving a gift in your will you can also reduce the total tax liability of your estate to your family. All legacies to the GDST are free from capital gains tax and inheritance tax.
WHY I CHOSE TO LEAVE A LEGACY TO NGHS

“NGHS was life changing in setting aspirations so high, and blessed with committed staff like Sheila Harris who made you feel anything was possible. For that reason I made provision years ago in my will to support other girls to access NGHS, and more recently I am also contributing regularly to the bursary scheme so the benefits can start now.”

FAREWILL S
After you have taken care of the people closest to you, please consider leaving a gift to NGHS in your will to make the gift of education possible for talented girls, regardless of their background.
As a NGHS alumna, you are now able to write your will for free using our online will-writing service, Farewill. Farewill is renowned for its incredibly user-friendly service, and currently writes on average 1 in 10 wills in the UK. They have been commended for their easy to follow, step-by-step process to writing a will in as little as 15 minutes. To get started, visit https://farewill.com/nottingham.
We are grateful that many NGHS alumnae choose to leave a legacy gift for the advancement of girls’ education. It would be wonderful if you could remember your school in your will for the benefit of the NGHS girls of the future. However, including a gift is not a condition of using the Farewill service. If you would prefer to arrange your will over the telephone, you can visit www.farewill.com/gdst-phone to book an appointment.

Ela’s Story

With her commitment to academic excellence and to the wider school community, Ela was awarded the Holmes Bursary in 2021. Named for Diana Holmes, Class of 1948, alumna of the school, this bursary rewards talented girls like Ela, to benefit from our wonderful Sixth Form education, and prepares them for whatever they want to achieve in life.
“The Diana Holmes Legacy gave me the opportunity to have an NGHS education. I will never forget the sense of belonging I felt as soon as I entered Mrs Bailey’s classroom, knowing that it was where I was meant to be.
My time at NGHS has shaped me as a person, giving me the confidence to flourish at university, both academically and personally. It was an honour when the school asked me to speak at the TEDx Nottingham in my final year. I delivered a talk on period poverty that has given me the ability to speak publicly without fear, something I would have otherwise avoided without the opportunity given to me by school.
During Sixth Form, one of my favourite experiences was being a part of the Senior Prefect team. As the Wellbeing and Feminist Prefect, I helped raise awareness around sensitive subjects like period poverty and tackling the taboos that come with menstruation.
It has been a privilege to be awarded the Diana Holmes Bursary; it is something I will forever be grateful for. I would like to thank everyone that has donated to the Bursary Fund; an education at NGHS is the biggest gift anyone could give.”
