THE GLUE GUY: OVER 30 YEARS HAS PASSED AND STEPHANÉ GAUVIN IS STILL THAT GUY

BY JAMIE NEUGEBAUER The roster of the 1987-88 National Championship-winning Notre Dame Hounds Junior ‘A’ featured men that would go on to play over 3,000 games combined in the National Hockey League.

That being said, it was a player that contributed none of them who is most remembered for bringing the locker room together.

That man is Stephane Gauvin, who went on to play four years at Cornell University, and is presently the principal of Central Collegiate, a high school in Moose Jaw, SK. The left-winger’s role as the ‘glue guy’ on the team 30 years ago is one that is well recognized by those who knew that team, but unsurprisingly he is quick to deflect that praise.

“We had some really good leadership from a number of people,” he says.

“Some were quieter, some more vocal, and some demonstrated their leadership skills by giving anything it took to be successful. We looked to Rod Brind’Amour as our leader on and off the ice because of his work ethic, but there were all sorts of guys that would throw their body in front of anything for the good of the team. Everybody contributed in some way, and that was the beauty of it. We also had tons of talent, so that was fun to be a part of as well, but off the ice it was really a full team effort. I never experienced something like it before or since.”

The concept of the ‘glue guy’ in a dressing room is centered on the idea of someone who knows the pulse of the club, and acts in an unselfish way to keep the team heading together in the right direction.

For the modern Hounds, like in Gauvin’s time, there is a cadre of strong voices in the room; but two veterans: goaltender Jacob Standen, and long-time Western Hockey Leaguer Jack Flaman, have particularly taken vocal, ‘glue guy’ roles.

“I think that guy is someone who is not afraid to say something,” says Flaman.

“When things are tough as a team, he’s the first to try to be a part of the solution.

When things are going well, he is the first to smile. I think the glue guy has to be around all the time, he has to be at the

rink every day with a positive attitude, pushing everyone to be a little bit better every day.”

A key part of knowing that team pulse is always going to be based on understanding the different types of adversity that come along over the course of a season.

To Gauvin, the Notre Dame way - that of embracing struggle as a means to grow and emerge through difficulty - puts Hounds teams in a unique situation to be successful in that regard.

“I think we got that from Pere Murray,” he says.

“Being at Notre Dame is tough, so you’re going to have a lot of resiliency if you make it here; your ability to bounce back from all those setbacks will make all the difference. I remember we were down three games to one to Calgary to determine whether we would go to the Centennial Cup, and Tarry McGary, a long-time poet/philosopher of Notre Dame college at the time, hung up a poster in a room that said ‘there was a vision in his mind undimmed through all adversity’, and for whatever reason that kind of sparked all of us. It would have been easy to throw in the towel, but instead we decided we were going to bounce back for this game and take it one game at a time, and eventually we just did. But the ability to get through adversity was what Notre Dame is all about.”

Standen and Flaman on the 2017-18 Hounds, both in their final year of junior hockey, have already come through all sorts of hockey adversity, having been moved and traded literally every season of their junior careers to date.

Yet both have come to understand that the Notre Dame setup, one where the players are around each other far more constantly than other junior programs, is a perfect breeding ground for the type of team unity that can make a season special.

“When you live together in the dorms you click instantly,” says Standen.

“It takes a week or two, you get nicknames, and the whole bonding process is expedited ten-fold. You get into camp, it’s like everyone has known each other for years. It has been a bit of a challenge (being someone who came in at the start of the year), but it has been the best-case scenario for a guy like me.”

One can never predict the way a season will end on the ice, but with tremendous glue guys like Flaman and Standen walking in Gauvin’s footsteps, as well as the entire leadership group headed up by the team’s captain Chance Longjohn, it can almost be assured that the Hounds will be a team all pulling the same direction.

For Standen, who played on a dominant, winning prep school team in Ontario, the habits that turn team unity into championships are already abundant on this year’s club.

“I’d say that consistent sacrifice, and putting the team first, is the biggest difference between successful teams and unsuccessful ones,” he says.

“It sounds cliché, but it is cliché for a reason: guys need to be willing to do anything for each other. Guys that are used to scoring huge points in a year are willing to block shots, or pass up points for their teammates, and that just translates to wins. We’ve seen that type of sacrifice here really early, guys blocking three or four shots a shift, devoting every ounce of their strength just for a win. Teams that just want to win, from the top to the bottom of the line-up…that is when you get a successful club.”

Gauvin and his men figured it out, now it’s up to the modern Hounds to follow suit.

2017 NOTRE DAME HUMANITARIAN AWARD WINNER

Chancellor of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame For Gerald J. Maier, Père Murray, founder of Athol Murray College of Notre Dame, was a powerful inspiration and role model that has influenced him his entire life. “Father Murray demonstrated by example how regardless of your origins or surroundings, you can use your own strengths and intellect to do almost anything you want,” says Maier. “From him I learned to think in a more global way. He was a powerful role model for the wisdom, ‘be yourself and don’t shirk from anything,’ and he really inspired me to think big.” is perspective may be at the root of Maier’s considerable accomplishments throughout his long career. Today he is Chairman of Granmar Investments Ltd. in Calgary. He’s the former President, CEO and chairman of TransCanada Pipelines, and has sat on the boards of more than 10 international corporations. He’s received awards from more than 30 institutions, and in 2004 became an Officer of the Order of Canada, a recognition he treasures.

It all began on a farm at Kronau Saskatchewan. “I was 1 of 8 kids,” says Maier. “We worked hard, but it was a good life. Back then the schools there went only to grade 8, so I did grades 9 and 10 by correspondence. But I wanted education beyond that. I knew of a boy who’d gone to Notre Dame and done very well. I was a pretty good hockey player, so in 1944 I headed to Notre Dame to do my grade 11. I was a bit shy, but I loved it. I played hockey, baseball and lacrosse, and really thrived academically. As my confidence grew I learned how to get along with people. ere was a strong sense of traditional values like honesty and the rewards of hard work. I was inspired by the school motto of ‘Struggle and Emerge,’ which we heard from Père almost daily, and it filled me with resolve. At graduation, I was at the top of my class.”

“Heading off on my own without the support of my friends was hard,” recalls Gerry. “It was daunting knowing I had to now take what I’d learned and

“I soon realized I wasn’t good enough to be a front-line hockey player,” he admits, “so I gave that up. Then I met a young mining engineer who organized about 4 of us. We hired a cook and headed to the far north where we prospected and staked claims. After 2 years, my share was enough for me to enroll in engineering at the University of Manitoba.”

After 2nd year I was hired by Giant Yellowknife Mine in the N.W. T. for the summer. But when I got to Edmonton to catch their plane, it was broken down. Almost out of money, I found a job in the oil field as a roustabout. e pay was good and I enjoyed working outside, so I convinced the University of Alberta to let me do 3rd year engineering there. After graduation, I got married and began working in the field as a petroleum engineer.”

From there Gerry Maier has never looked back and his career has been one long powerful stream of accomplishments. “It’s been a lot of fun,” he says, “The fundamentals of success were imparted and reinforced at Notre Dame. Father Murray’s Notre Dame Man poem was sort of implanted in our minds, as it still is at the school today. I didn’t think about it a lot, but those lo y principles just guided my life. I was also deeply influenced

by Père’s ‘global thinking.’ When he wanted to get his voice heard he wrote to world leaders, and they often wrote back! As a result, when I got asked to work in other countries, this bigger perspective inspired me to agree when a lot of other guys refused. I worked in the U.S. and Canada, Australia and the U.K. With Continental Oil, I had operational responsibility for Europe, Asia, North Africa and the Middle East, and this all happened because I’d lost the fear of challenge.”

Today Maier is known for his philanthropic work. Because he so values education he’s established scholarships at the U. of C. and the U. of A. “As I reflect on the struggles of my own student years,” he explains, “many times I wasn’t sure how I’d get through the next week. Today, there are a lot of kids with the brains, potential and desire, but they lack financial resources. So, I’ve created entrance and graduate scholarships to help worthy students.” Gerry Maier is proud of his contributions to his industry and to his country. He also treasures the Medal of Honour he received from Notre Dame. A member of their Board of Regents for 12 years, he now serves as Chancellor. “Today,” he says, “I’m motivated by the tremendous number of intriguing and challenging opportunities that constantly arise in so many different areas. The more I learn the more I realize how little I know. It’s all just so fascinating! I’m truly inspired by young people who apply themselves and make achievements to the limit of their mental and physical abilities.”

By supporting them as he does, Gerry Maier continues to honour the legacy begun by Father Murray at Notre Dame, all those years ago.

NOTRE DAME HOUNDS RAISING THE ROOF ON CANADIAN HOCKEY HOUNDS OPEN STATE-OF-THE-ART OFF ICE HOCKEY SKILLS TRAINING FACILITY

BY DAWN FROATS’99, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS The Notre Dame Hounds Hockey Program opened an addition of a 4,200-square foot state-of-the-art office hockey training facility at Duncan McNeill Arena on December 11, 2016.

This facility was made possible through a $1,000,000 in gifts from the Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund at the Calgary Foundation and friends of Daryl K. Seaman.

Initiated by Paul J. Hill, long-time patron of Notre Dame and friend to Daryl Seaman, this project will leave a legacy for Doc at Notre Dame, a school to which he was a great supporter and friend.

The facility boasts an impressive 3,000 square foot open synthetic ice surface with an enclosed area featuring boards for goalie and player specific training, synthetic-ice shooting lanes, a Rapid Shot Machine, Rapid Hands Machines and a flexible space for a skills area for puck handling and passing. This facility handles 20-25 athletes at a time.

“The new skills training area provides a state of the art facility for the Notre Dame Hound student athletes to assist in their overall skill development”, said General Manager of Hockey, Jeremy Mylymok’90. “This facility will provide our players and coaches with the resources to work on specific skill development, which in turn, will transfer to better on ice performance for our athletes and innovation of training methods to be shared with hockey programs across Canada.”

The Off-Ice Hockey Skills Facility is adjoined to the Duncan McNeill’s already impressive Olympic size ice surface, Maier High Performance Strength and Conditioning Facility, skating treadmill, 12 home team dressing rooms equipped with video capabilities and an athletic sport therapy training room featuring a cold and hot tub.

CHELSEA LAYDEN-POWER’97 VALUES THE NOTRE DAME EDUCATION

BY MIRA TREBILCOCK, DEVELOPMENT OFFICER “Notre Dame is a very special part of my life. I know that I could not have achieved and had the professional career I have been able to have without the benefit of my Notre Dame experience,” says Dr. Chelsea LaydenPower’97, Chiropractor and owner of Power Health, Lethbridge Chiropractic Clinic.

Chelsea came to prairie school in the village of Wilcox, SK aware that eventually she would feel such affection for her experiences as a Hound. What began as a fascination to leave her home town of Rocky Mountain House, AB and attend a boarding high school, led to a campus tour that would ultimately change the course of her life.

When visiting schools with her family the summer before Grade 9, Chelsea and her parents made a quick stop at the Duncan McNeill Arena. The drive down Main Street was shocking - the community was very still and hardly anyone was on campus. Jill Tanner (Hannah) was at the rink preparing for Summer Hockey Camps. Beaming with pride about her alma mater, Jill provide provided Chelsea and her family with a tour of campus. Given the unique way that Notre dame fosters meaningful relationships among teachers and students – and among peers, it’s no surprise that the instant connection Chelsea shared with Jill created an enduring bond that changed the trajectory of her education and led to her enrollment at the college that fall.

When Chelsea arrived to Notre Dame, she was 1 of only 17 girls in her grade, sometimes she was the one and only girl in her class.

With only two pay phones in the dormitory and minimal computers on campus, the disconnection from family was difficult at first. But as days past and friendships grew stronger, the disconnection grew into independence, self-discovery and personal growth. In her four years as a Hound, Chelsea played for the Jr. Girls Hockey team, captaining the team

in her final year and leading Gunner House as a grade 12 student.

Chelsea’s persistent work ethic was also apparent in the classroom, as she earned the Mother Edith Scholarship as well as the General Proficiency award and Governor General’s Medal.

Additionally, Chelsea was fortunate to receive a scholarship from the University of Regina. Her studies

Hounds meet Hounds everywhere and that couldn’t be more true for Chelsea. Upon completing her Doctor of Chiropractic, Chelsea returned to Alberta, where she met John Power’93 at the Mac’s AAA Hockey Tournament in Calgary, a tournament Hounds still attend to this day. John, a NCAA hockey and golf athlete at Bemidji State, was coaching the Hounds at the time. John and Chelsea eventually moved to Lethbridge, where they got married. To say their connection to Notre Dame strings deep is certainly

an understatement, Terry O’Malley, beloved past teacher, coach and President, even provided the Grace at their wedding.

Fueled by her passion for Chiropractic and empowered through their rich learning experiences at Notre Dame and beyond, Chelsea and John founded and opened Power Health in 2006. The multi-disciplinary Chiropractic Clinic focuses on a holistic approach to restoring the body’s innate ability to heal itself from the inside out. Chelsea and John’s fondness for Notre Dame has led to decades of service, leadership, community engagement and support to local sports teams, the local public library and to Notre Dame.

“We feel the opportunities Notre Dame provides students, both inside and outside the classroom are unmatched. By donating to the HoundsFund we help ensure Notre Dame’s continued excellence for current and future generations of Hounds.”

If she could offer advice to current and prospective Hounds, it would be to recognize the significance of a Notre Dame education. Hounds, you may not make the team you want to make, or receive the grade you anticipated but it’s about more than those specific instances. Immersing oneself in a campus rich with learning opportunities in every aspect of school and daily life, is what truly helps one develop as a “whole” person – and learning to recognize that early can be a challenge.

Chelsea and John bring a genuine dedication to and concern for the school, and Hounds of all generations.

Knowing firsthand the difference a Notre Dame education makes in a young person’s life has motivated them to give back to the college.

Their support ensures that current and future Hounds, like their daughter Jayce, have the opportunity to attend the college and are provided with those experiences that help empower them to ultimately realize their dreams.

NOTRE DAME FOOTBALL – THE BOYS OF FALL

BY JAMIE NEUGEBAUER It matters little whether it’s the 1950s, the 1990s or the present day: playing football outdoors in the wind-swept prairies of southern Saskatchewan tests the hearts of all that put their hand to it.

In addition to battling the climate, the Notre Dame football experience includes the realities of dealing with rigorous academics, and the likelihood of playing at least one other sport simultaneously; clearly, the school motto ‘Struggle and Emerge’ has always rung true for the Hounds’ gridiron warriors.

“Pere Murray always used to say that we football players were his muckers,” says alumnus Ed Magis, who played running back and safety for Notre Dame between 1950 and 1956.

“Sometimes playing in the prairie field you had to fight your way through regardless of the obstacles, regardless of those outside forces.

He always used to tell us that we had to forget the environment, put our heads down, and just work. Playing football at Notre Dame taught me that you have compete all the time, and no matter what your adversity is, you have to follow through, you never give up. We gained enthusiasm and the self-confidence from our experience, and it taught us that every individual has special qualities that have to be brought out for the whole to succeed.”

Magis’ perspective has been at the heart and soul of countless Saskatchewan Provincial football titles for the Hounds, most recently in 1997.

That special group 20 years ago, head coached by one of Canada’s great high school football coaches Darren Olson, with current school President Rob Palmarin as defensive co-ordinator, tore through the competition, with a talented backfield of Scott Franklin and JP Davilmar, a gifted leader at quarterback in Robert Ducharme, and a balanced, hardnosed defence.

“I think talent was obviously a big part of it, but always the determining factor in a championship team is the

kind of leadership you get from your older guys,” says Olson.

“The biggest thing was that the leaders were focussed, excited and determined, and badly wanted to win a provincial championship before they graduated from high school. We had some outstanding guys on that team: Franklin and Davilmar each had 1,000-yard seasons, and while we were definitely a run-first group, Ducharme’s fantastic arm really came into play with our ability to feed off the run, and use play-action passes to keep the other team’s defence off balance. We were tough to stop.”

That team, like the motto says, had to emerge from struggle as well, overcoming a winless season in 1995, and a devastating playoff exit in 1996.

Today’s team is coached by Hound Mitchel Morrison, an alumnus of the University of Regina Rams program, who has assembled a strong and experienced coaching staff that still includes Palmarin.

While the difficulty of attracting the best athletes to play football alongside the plethora of other sports available at Notre Dame is a real one, Morrison feels that the tide is turning fast toward a strong revitalization of what was very recently a pillar of consistent success at the campus.

“The main positive right now is a real upswing in student involvement,” he says.

“We have gained about, on average, 10 more players per year than over the last five years.

Right now, we have a solid core of younger players returning to take the places of the 12 Grade 12s that are graduating, and we are optimistic that we are on track to make Notre Dame a great football school again.”

For Ducharme, who works as an alumni co-ordinator for Notre Dame in the present day, and the thousands of other ex-football Hounds, the lessons learned from lacing up the cleats and proudly donning the ND across their helmets played a critical role in building a solid foundation for the rest of his life.

“The biggest thing for me that came out of football was that it taught me the significance of good habits,” he says.

“If you do the things that may not be easy, and work hard at them, you can achieve anything you set out to.

It may not happen overnight, it may take three years like it took our team, but it taught me that if you keep at it, you struggle and emerge like the Notre Dame motto, you will come out a winner.”

well, she recently completed her Board term at the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, where she also served as Chair.

Elyse has participated on a number of federal and provincial government advisory boards focused on Canada’s competitiveness, energy strategy, economic development, transportation strategy and access to credit. Elyse works to advance innovation and entrepreneurism through her role on the MaRS Discovery District Board of Directors and the leadership council for Scale Up Ventures. She has been recognized as a Top 100 Women of Influence by the Women’s Executive Network, is a YWCA 2012 Woman of Distinction (Business), and by Maclean’s and Canadian Business Magazines as one of Canada’s most influential business leaders. In 2014,

Elyse was appointed Member of the Order of Canada for her community engagement and achievements as an innovative business leader.

Elyse’s GE career began in 1984 and has spanned the US, Canada and several industrial and consumer GE businesses including aviation, energy and lighting.Her career outside GE included executive positions in the health care, energy and non-profit sectors.

She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dartmouth College in New Hampshire where she studied Biology and environmental studies and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.

30 YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1988 CENTENNIAL CUP CHAMPIONSHIP

BY JAMIE NEUGEBAUER The sight of an 18-year-old Rod Brind’Amour taking out the garbage on the campus of Notre Dame was not an uncommon one while he was there in the mid-to-late 1980’s.

It was his job, after all.

And the fact that it was his job was not disturbed, in the middle of May 1988, by the winning of Canada’s National Junior ‘A’ title, literally the day before in Pembroke, Ont. “It’s funny, we got together to talk about this in September,” says Brind’Amour, who went on to captain the 2006 Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup. “(Legendary team head coach) Barry McKenzie remembers the day after we won, that my job was to clean up the trash. There wasn’t a big celebration, but that is just kind of how it was. It’s just what makes that place special: that you have to be humble, and you have to just do what you have to do, even if you did just win the national championship.”

Brind’Amour was the leader of a group mostly comprised of 17 and 18-year-old Hounds fresh off a bitterly disappointing loss in the final of the 1987 midget national championship.

The club then elected to make the jump into the Junior ‘A’ ranks of the veteran-laden, physical Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League for the 1987-88 season, and while the gambit clearly paid off for the cadre of recognizable names that came from that team, the grand experiment was nowhere near certain to succeed from where McKenzie and his staff sat in the summer of ‘87.

“We had no idea what we were getting into,” says McKenzie.

“We just knew a lot of our students, and once they were finished with midget ‘AAA’, they had no place to play. They wanted to stay at Notre Dame, so we ended up getting a junior team.

“I would say we were certainly among the youngest teams in all of Canada. We had no idea how we’d do, so to see the way we played was quite

surprising, and of course we got more confidence as the year progressed.

The kids understood what had to be done though, and ended up getting the job done; so, it was obviously a very special memory to me.”

A dominant SJHL season led ND to a tough Canada West regional final series in April of 1988, against a loaded and veteran Calgary Canucks team.

The Canucks pushed McKenzie’s troops to the brink, going up 3-1 in the series, before the Hounds rallied with three straight wins, the final two of which on hostile ice in Calgary.

games at the National Championships in Pembroke, Ont, over the course of which the Hounds won three one-goal games, they found themselves down 2-1 after 40 minutes in the final against the East Region champion Halifax Lions.

Scott Pellerin, one of the Hounds’ top forwards, who would go on to play 536 NHL games and is currently the Director of Player Development for the Toronto Maple Leafs, remembers the sense of calm and confidence that he and the club felt, even in those pressure-packed moments.

“It was definitely a group that, to this day, I can honestly say that I’ve never been more confident that we were going to win in any given game,” he says.

“I just knew we were going to give ourselves the best chance to win that game, even if we were down in the third period of the national final. We knew Barry McKenzie would get the most out of us, and at the heart of it, we just all truly respected the crest on the front more than the name on the back, and we were able to have success that way.”

Future Quebec Nordiques right winger Dwayne Norris ended up scoring the game winner on a goal set up by Brind’Amour, and the Hounds’ run to immortality was carved in stone.

Yet even more than the honour of winning that improbable championship, the lessons learned from the time spent under McKenzie, and on the hallowed campus in the middle of the prairies of southern Saskatchewan, are what Brind’Amour, Pellerin, and that whole team continue to echo as their true rewards from that magical season.

“Being at Notre Dame really matured me, and in so many ways made me into the player and the man that I became,” says Brind’Amour.

“You get thrust into the environment at ND, your mom isn’t there to cook and clean for you, you have to grow up quick. You learn to handle things you might not have before, and you

learn to rely on yourself; you can’t look to blame others when things are hard. I can’t say enough about my time there and the friends I met, the people that helped me, the coaches and teachers, it was a perfect place for me.”

That training did not go unnoticed by college scouts, as an incredible 19 of the 22 players on the roster that year went on to play NCAA hockey.

Together, they would account for over 3,000 NHL appearances, and have post-hockey careers ranging from high school principals to NHL player development directors.

“Notre Dame really prepared me for that next step, there is no doubt about it,” says Stephane Gauvin, one of the team’s leaders, who would go on to play professionally in France before beginning on his path to be a principal at a secondary school in Moose Jaw, SK. “I remember college and pro coaches mentioning how much they respected the Notre Dame program, and that they wanted to have at

least get one Hound on their roster. I believe I may have been the start of having a few Hounds down at Cornell University where I played Division I, and I know we made a pretty good name for the school and the hockey program wherever we went.”

For Brind’Amour, who also went on to add an NCAA championship with Michigan State University, and a gold medal at the 1994 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships to his resume, the Centennial Cup championship planted a deep understanding of how to win into his hockey toolkit.

“I think winning at high levels does a lot to you, because you have to learn how to do it,” says the retired veteran of 20 National Hockey League campaigns, and one Olympic Games.

“You have to fight through so many ups and downs over the course of a hockey season, and emerging from those things to win teaches you a lot. So (winning the Centennial Cup with Notre Dame) was kind of the first

chapter of figuring out how to win for me, and it really prepared me for the rest of my career in college and in the NHL; just how hard you have to work to win.”

“It is just an everyday kind of attitude you have to have to be successful, and it was really forged by my time at Notre Dame,” he continues.

Thirty years ago, Brind’Amour captained his team to an improbable title, then celebrated by taking out the garbage.

The ’88 Hounds never lost the message from that.

“For us, it was just a way of doing what we needed to do,” says Pellerin.

“We weren’t bigger than anyone else in the school, and that comes down to the long history of Notre Dame. Doing whatever it was that we needed to do, even if we did just win the national championship, was another way for us as a group to set the standard, to be leaders on and off the ice as we were expected to be, and expected ourselves to be.”

throughout the weekend, the competitive spirit in every player was evident. With alumni spanning nearly four decades from 2017 to 1981 participating in the weekend, the event offered a chance to reconnect, have a great time wearing the Notre

Dame Hounds jersey and the skating muscles again.

The weekend was led by alumni in Alberta including Stephen Buffalo’90, Kevin Blanchette’83, Gordon Sherven’81, Dave Anderson’89 and Darren Mackay’88.

GORD SHERVEN’81 – 2017 ALUMNI OF THE YEAR

BY JAMIE NEUGEBAUER There is a message every new student receives when arriving at Notre Dame, from the mouth of Pere Murray himself: Place yourself under God. Take individual initiative.

Take up your enterprise and do it for the community.

If possible do it with the community.

Most of all, do it with chivalry, with courage, with the right motivation.

ND’s Frank Germann Award, named for the legendary Notre Dame hockey player, teacher and coach, is given to a Hound who is committed to volunteering in the community, for the betterment of the college.

This year’s recipient, Gord Sherven, has continued to live a life with Pere Murray’s words as his base.

“Notre Dame has always been a big part of my life, and it always will be,” he says. Frank was my English teacher and baseball coach and it is truly an honour to receive this award in his name!

“I grew up in a family that was all about helping your community, and Notre Dame continued to instill in me that you have to give back to your community. I don’t think I would have been able to go to Notre Dame had I not received a bursary back in 1978, so some of the things we do here in Alberta is that we’re able to give kids the opportunity to go to the school like I did in hopes that it will change their lives like it did mine.”

Sherven, 54, was born in Gravelbourg, SK and attended the college between 1978 and 1981. An elite, two-way centreman with a nose for the net, he went on to win a US collegiate national championship with the University of North Dakota, and was selected in the 1981 National Hockey League Entry Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.

Gord’s career would include 100 NHL games for the Oilers, and Hartford Whalers, and 581 professional contests in North America, Germany, and Switzerland; but the pride and joy of his playing time was the opportunities he had to represent Canada internationally.

Sherven toured with the national

Olympic program between 1986 and 1988, and went on to score eight points in eight games as part of Canada’s fourth-place finish at the ’88 Calgary Games.

It was an opportunity he would never have received if he had not emerged from immense struggles, those of injury and being cut, that would eventually end his NHL dreams.

“My ability to persevere through these hard times really began in my ND years,” he says.

“You have to be committed and you have to be focused. It’s okay when things go poorly, it’s about struggling, emerging and moving on. You learn those traits at Notre Dame, that you have to be dedicated to preserve your work ethic, and your attitude.

You can’t focus on the negatives.

Representing Canada was an honour, and a thrill. It is a culmination of all the work you’ve done, and all the opportunities you’ve had, and when you first wear that jersey, it really is something, just a crazy feeling. I still sit back and feel so grateful that I had the opportunity to do that a couple of times.”

Sherven retired from playing the game in 2000, but his post-retirement hockey-related resume is long.

Included on it is a long stint on the board of directors of Hockey Canada, Chair of the Team Canada Hockey Alumni Association that works to

provide retired players an opportunity to stay connected to the game while raising funds for Hockey Canada’s Foundation, and his current role as Vice President of the Notre Dame Alumni Association of Alberta as well as numerous charity events with the Calgary Flames Alumni.

Yet despite the honours and the awards, it is a story of radical humility and work ethic that he points to as the core of where he began his journey.

“To have the kind of mentorship and influence in my life from Frank Germann, Terry O’Malley, Barry Mckenzie and all the teachers at Notre Dame instilled is something I can’t adequately put into words,” he says.

“We had just won the Air Canada Cup (the national midget championships) in Cornwall in the spring of 1980, and we hadn’t had much time off all year. We weren’t supposed to take any days off, but most of the team decided to take a couple days to see our families anyways. We get back in, (legendary coach Barry MacKenzie) calls us into his office, and makes us sweep the main street in front of the school, right after we had just won the national championships. It really sent a strong message to us of humility, and remembering who you are, and where you come from, and that you’re still just a student here. It was a lesson we all took to heart.”

ETERNAL BE THEIR MEMORY MAGGIE CHARTIER’68 Marguerite “Maggie” Chartier passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in Regina, SK on Saturday, August 26, 2017, at the age of 65. She was predeceased by her grandparents, Jacobus C. and Maria E. DeLaet and Victor and Irma Verhelst and her parents Emile A. and Maria J. DeLaet. She will be missed by her husband and soulmate, Guy Chartier; two cherished daughters Allyson (Shawn) Bradley and Kristen Chartier; her brothers Victor (Diane) DeLaet and Dennis (Cheryl) DeLaet and their families; one uncle; one aunt; several cousins; and a wide circle of friends. Maggie was always full of life and laughter. She forged many lifelong friendships while growing up in Benson, at Notre Dame College in Wilcox, singing and performing as Diamond Lil for Regina’s Buffalo Days, at the lake and working in the printing industry. Maggie had a generous spirit and was always looking out for others. She served on the Board of Regents and sponsored tuition for students at Athol Murray College of Notre Dame in Wilcox. She was a business sponsor for several events and organizations in and around Regina and the Archdiocese of Regina. She valued her employees at Allied Printers and Promotions; many of them became friends. Although the day-to-day operations of her company kept her very busy, her main priority was always her family. She helped organize family get- togethers with her aunts, uncles, and cousins. Maggie ensured that her mother was always well cared for and comfortable in

her last years. She was a fun-loving confidante to her brothers, sisters-inlaw, nephews and nieces. She doted on her daughters; they knew that her love for them was without end.

Maggie and Guy shared thirty-two years of married life travelling together, entertaining family and friends, and enjoying their dream home by the lake.

Maggie will be remembered for her smiles, her laughter, and her joy of life.

Don is survived by his three children; Joy, Cindy and Mike. Grandson Rey and granddaughters Casey, Robyn, Erin and Cheyenne. Along with his sister Jeanette and nieces Kathy, LoriAnn, Judy, Jackie and nephew Ronnie.
