Dear Friends of Notre Dame College, As I prepare to embark on my next “voyage of discovery,” one that I suspect will be quite a change from our College's recent journey, I am given to pause and reflect on the past 11 years.

Eleven years ago, a question I heard very often was, “Why are you here; why did you come to Notre Dame College?”

What drew me here is what has kept me here. While we have built numerous physical structures to keep pace with the College's growth—bricks and mortar, grass and turf, things that you can touch and feel—what I quickly discovered is the tremendous resource of our strongest asset, our people.

For the tangible, all we need do is look around. I could not be prouder of what we have accomplished working together, such as: establishing the Academic Support Center for Students with Learning Differences, developing a firstrate nursing division whose graduates are highly respected in the many fine medical facilities they serve, renovating of Christ the King Chapel to its original splendor, constructing on-campus athletic fields that go well beyond sports in increasing student engagement and campus vitality and the remodeling of existing and building of new residence halls.

We’ve also done a wonderful job with some academic enhancements, always mindful of our educational philosophy that colleges and schools of higher learning exist to serve students first. In this issue of Notre Dame Today, we take a look not only at things we have done and results we have produced but also at what we have discovered along the way: an enduring legacy of leadership the College has perpetuated for more than 90 years through its presidents; trustees and administrators who guide the day-to-day operations of the College; and faculty and staff who provide the personal attention to our students for which the College is known.

We also salute our students at this year's commencement ceremonies and recognize three who stand out amongst their peers; we take a pictorial look at the development of the College over the years; and we profile student Meaghan Wierzbic who, after a number of setbacks, discovered Notre Dame was the fit for her.

So why did I come here and why have I stayed? Because when I first arrived on this beautiful campus 11 years ago, I discovered an all too well-kept secret.

But that was more than a decade ago, and we are no longer a secret to those who know the community, Northeast Ohio and quality education. Notre Dame has made its mark. Notre Dame has been discovered, and I am honored to have played a role in the transformation.

Thomas Kruczek Named 14th President The Board of Trustees of Notre Dame College is proud to announce the appointment of Thomas Kruczek as the 14th president of the College, succeeding Andrew P. Roth, Ph.D., who will retire June 30, 2014.

Kruczek is currently Dean of the College of Business and Management at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., where he has been since 2011.

Prior to that, he served as executive director of the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. He received his Master of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame in 1979.

Kruczek’s accomplishments at the College of Business and Management at Lynn University include: • Developing a new undergraduate curriculum, including the addition of three new majors—one of which is now the second most popular major at the University—and a series of courses starting in the freshman year that assist students in planning for life after college; • Assisting in the fundraising and design of a new three-story, 35,000 square-foot College of Business building, to open in August 2014;

• Launching a Career Preparation and Internship Center that has cultivated more than 90 new corporate partnerships from the regional and national business community; • Completing a strategic plan for the college, reorganizing the college’s structure and completing reaccreditation of the college with the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education; • Initiating a series of collegefocused faculty committees to discuss and propose solutions for challenges including majors, rubrics and faculty development; • Creating marketing and social media programs that have resulted in increased enrollment for the MBA and sports management programs; • Commencing a strong Board of Advisors for the college to ensure future success and direction.

While Kruczek served as executive director of the Falcone Center for Entrepreneurship at the Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University, the center rose in national rankings and was listed as the third best entrepreneurship program in the country by Bloomberg Business Week,

fourth by The Princeton Review and Entrepreneur Magazine and ninth by U.S. News and World Report. The Thomas Kruczek Falcone Center is one of the largest entrepreneurship centers in the country.

Kruczek has lectured on several subject areas, including entrepreneurship, innovations and start-up ventures and assisting and teaching disabled and women military veterans through the Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities and Veteran Women Igniting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship programs.

In addition to his academic achievements, Kruczek has a record of successful business leadership as the CEO and owner of SunTek Industries, a privately held manufacturing business, and as a founding partner of Steve Baker and Associates, a consulting firm. Kruczek also held key positions with The Walt Disney Co. in both the financial planning and marketing areas.

College Receives $250,000 Gift to Help Name Academic Support Center Notre Dame College has received a $250,000 gift from the Smiley Family Charitable Foundation to support the capital campaign for its Academic Support Center for Students with Learning Differences (ASC).

The funds will be used to help establish an endowment for the Center and as a lead gift toward naming the ASC after Arthur J. Noetzel and Gretchen Noetzel Walsh, M.S.Ed. The endowment goal is $1.5 million.

“This generous gift will help the Center continue in the spirit of Arthur Noetzel, who believed every person, regardless of challenges, should have the opportunity to reach his or her greatest potential,” said Notre Dame President Andrew P. Roth, Ph.D. “It also appropriately recognizes his

many deserving students who may have otherwise been overlooked.”

Notre Dame is an integrated campus with 132 ASC students, who receive personalized attention adapted to their special needs, blend with the more than 1,400 full-time and 2,250 total students in all of the traditional experiences of college life.

The Center has seen unprecedented enrollment, since serving four students in 2005.

Notre Dame Awarded Grant to Revitalize Arts, Culture at College, in Community Notre Dame College has been awarded a $26,000 grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture (CAC) for “Second Act: A Revitalization of Arts and Culture in the Community.”

The grant will bring senior and student artists and performers from the community together to collaborate to create inter-generational dialogue, creativity and life-long learning.

Programming will employ arts and culture in unique ways to further engage the College and the community through three theatrical performances, two art shows and a literature-based seminar.

The theatrical performances are “All Shook Up! The Elvis Musical,”

performed this spring; “On Golden Pond,” to be acted in October; and “Inventions!,” to be staged in November. The two fall productions will be directed by Jacqi Loewy, M.A., assistant professor of theatre and communication and director of the Notre Dame College Theatre.

The visual arts elements included the College’s spring All Student Art Show and will introduce a Second Act: Senior Citizens Who Reinvent Themselves art show with opening reception and gallery talks in October. Elderly who did not begin their careers as artists will be selected for this show.

The literature component, Books

That Changed the World, is an annual seminar series that brings together the academic and greater communities to discuss works of literature that have had a significant impact upon humanity. Facilitated by College academicians, seminar participants meet in nine sessions over a year and use books to delve deeper into larger themes that continue to have relevance in society.

“Second Act: A Revitalization of Arts and Culture in the Community” recognizes the importance of strengthening community partnerships through engagement in the arts and promoting lifelong learning.

Grant Provides Students Service Learning Utilizing a $30,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation’s Fenn Educational Fund, Notre Dame College has created collaborative learning environments to better educate and prepare its ecology and environmental science students—and serve the community in the process.

The grant program, “Stewardship and Sustainability: Eco-Careers for the 21st Century,” has placed biology majors in research positions and internships with nonprofit organizations, including in education with the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes, horticulture at the Shaker Country Club and environmental safety through the Cuyahoga County Board of Health, among others.

“This is a great opportunity for ecology and environmental science students not only to apply what they are learning in their courses, develop their skills and experience in the field and earn internship credit but also to do it in a way that benefits the

community,” said Tracey Meilander, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology.

In addition to the formal internship experiences for class credit, students also have participated in course-related service learning activities throughout the school year.

Meilander has arranged for class projects ranging from assessing the biodiversity of plants and animals to conducting water quality studies.

Six Notre Dame biology students even taught a Wonders of Water program to second- and third-graders at the University of Cleveland Preparatory School. The collaboration with the Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio and the Alliance for the Great Lakes Adopt-a-Beach program included classroom instruction and a field trip to Lake Erie’s Edgewater Park, where the College and elementary school students tested water samples, as well as removed litter.

College Offers Masters of Science in Nursing

The new M.S.N. graduate degree is a 36 credit-hour program designed for new and practicing B.S.N. nurses who are looking to advance their careers by becoming leaders in direct care, as well as by training to be nurse educators.

The accelerated courses are taught by full-time, expert faculty and delivered online for the convenience of at-home, self-directed study.

The degree is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

“This Master of Science in Nursing program intends to deepen a student’s understanding of person, environment, health and nursing, as well as prepare practicing and new nurses to be successful in the roles of both educator and leader within the nursing profession, the community and the health care system,” said Mary Ann Schneider, Ph.D., dean of The Finn Center for Adult, Graduate and Professional Programs at the College.

In addition to the national need for nurses in general, the AACN reports a major shortage of those with more advanced levels of knowledge and experience who can serve as nurse educators.

“When you leave Notre Dame, you will have your GPA. You will have some awards, too. But what will be your personal profile?” she asked.

Always the teacher, rather than imparting her own personal definition of the distinguishing trait, she advised the students of steps to further develop their own.

who supervises 18 adjunct reading instructors in addition to teaching a full courseload— told students they can develop their character by continuing to learn from her colleagues.

“Respect the faculty. They have so much to offer you. They have been where you want to go. They know how to help you,” she said.

Second, according to Oliverio, students can take advantage of the campus chapel.

“It is a place where you can be alone… to think about your character, where you are going, how you can make yourself even better,” she said.

And one of the best ways for the students to develop their character is by striving beyond the traditional measures of success for which they are being honored this night, she said.

“Your dreams are big. I’m glad. But you need passion behind them. You are setting the stage with these good grades to make a difference,” she said. “You had to work your way here.

You are still working toward a future to have the best chance you can.”

Since she started working at Notre Dame College in 2004, Oliverio has written 17 online reading courses and now is working to add a dyslexia certificate at the College.

She teaches in the Teacher Education Evening Licensure program, directs the reading practicum for master’s and bachelor’s degree students and conducts the reading field experience for undergraduate and graduate students.

In addition, Oliverio developed her character as the education department liaison to the College’s assessment committee, advisor for the education council and serves on the Faculty Advisory Council. She also is a member of the International Dyslexic Association Development Team.

And always in character as the consummate educator, Oliverio ended her address to the honorees with a simple test. She asked the audience: “What you do with your success is all driven by your …”

“Character,” they all answered.

Notre Dame Launches Finance Major

Performing Arts Student Honored for Service

The business division of Notre Dame College will introduce a new major in finance beginning in the fall 2014 semester.

Joseph Pavelek '14, who just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication and minors in mathematics and theatre, is the winner of the 2014 Sr. Mary Agnes Bosche Award.

This new major will prepare students for careers in financial management, banking, government, real estate, and financial planning and analysis. And it enables Notre Dame to better compete with colleges and universities in Northeast Ohio, most of which already offer bachelor’s degrees in finance.

With an increase in the complexity of financial markets and the growing number of Baby Boomers reaching retirement age, financial planners are in increasing demand. According

to the U.S. Department of Labor, financial analyst jobs were expected to grow 23 percent from 2010 to 2020, while positions available for personal financial planners were projected to increase at a rate of 32 percent over the same period.

The introduction of a finance major is the result of a joint effort by the business division and math department to enhance student quantitative skills.

“Students benefit not only from the liberal arts content of our educational core but also will be prepared to succeed in multiple financial career pursuits in a variety

of financial careers, regionally and globally,” said Karen Penler, MBA, assistant professor of accounting and chair of the business division.

Students who major in finance will fulfill requirements in the business core and 22 additional credits in areas of accounting, economics, mathematics and corporate finance.

The combination of these courses will feature in-depth study of integrated financial analysis, investment alternatives, risk evaluation and mitigation, borrowing and leasing options, long-term capital funding, dividend payout and earnings retention decision-making.

He received the honor and addressed his graduating classmates during the College’s undergraduate commencement ceremony May 11 in Regina Auditorium.

In his four years at Notre Dame, Pavelek has been involved in several choir ensembles, including serving as choir president for two years.

He also has led the Notre Dame marching band as senior drum major and been a faithful member of the College’s campus ministry

“I would have to say that the most memorable thing about my years at Notre Dame College would be all the time I spent with the performing arts programs,” Pavelek said.

“They have become like a family to me, and I will never forget.”

Originally from St. Clairsville, Ohio, Pavelek plans to complete coursework for his MBA in the Cleveland area and pursue a career as a lighting designer or technical director for a theatre.

Graduate Student Lauded for Educating Underserved, Diverse Populations

Education Major Recognized as Adult Student Leader In, Out of Classroom

Jodi Hopkins Scott '14, who just graduated with a master’s degree, has been recognized with the St. Catherine of Alexandria Award in professional education for 2014.

Jennifer Berardinelli '14, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in education, is the recipient of 2014 Sr. Mary Leroy Finn Award.

Scott was presented with the honor and spoke during the College’s graduate commencement May 10 in Regina Auditorium.

As part of the requirements for her degree, Scott designed an action research project with the goal of implementing new teaching strategies that recognize and appreciate the diverse dialects and appropriate settings for casual language, especially AfricanAmerican vernacular English.

“I learned that simply defining and dismissing a person’s speech

patterns as bad, poor or unacceptable does not provide a foundation for learning, but rather a foundation for resentment, anger and educational disengagement,” Scott said.

Her goal is to close the achievement gap between white and nonwhite students.

“If I want to be effective at teaching, my students need to know how to speak and write using standard English. I need to show them first the linguistic patterns of their language and how they differ from standard English,” she said.

Currently an educator at Lake Erie International High School, Scott also has taught high school at St. Joseph Academy and has served as an educational

The St. Catherine of Alexandria Award is presented to an outstanding master’s degree candidate in the graduating class. The recipient, who must exemplify the high ideals of a Catholic education, is chosen by the graduate faculty on the basis of leadership, scholarship and service to and support of the College and community-at-large.

BUSINESS

Berardinelli was recognized with the award and spoke to the graduating class during the College’s undergraduate commencement May 11 in Regina Auditorium.

Throughout her college career at Notre Dame, Berardinelli has maintained a commitment to academic excellence while juggling a busy schedule as both a full-time student and a full-time employee.

“I will always remember all the hard work it takes to get to graduation.

I may have not had the time to get to know the campus college life and all the wonderful people that were

in my classes with me as much as I would have liked, but I did learn so much,” Berardinelli said.

With a background in theatre, she associates being on stage to standing at the front of a room full of students. Her inventive lesson plans include such creative projects as making lava lamps out of household items. For this particular science lesson, she filmed herself creating the lamp to show her students before they made their own.

“With the help of some amazing professors that I am honored to call lifetime friends, I truly have learned what kind of teacher I want to become, and I am excited to move forward,” she said.

Jennifer Berardinelli is conferred upon an adult student who has demonstrated academic excellence and leadership qualities both inside and outside the classroom.

The recipient, chosen by faculty and administration, must have a minimum grade point average of 3.5. He or she must also embody the characteristics inscribed on the custom-made award presntation bowl: “Catalyst, Diligent, Scholarly, Spiritual, Resilient.”

Commencement of a College President: Just as graduation is the culmination of a student's Notre Dame College career, this year’s ceremonies also marked the conclusion of a president’s tenure.

As President Andrew P. Roth, Ph.D., neared retirement, he presided over commencement for the 90th class at the College—and was acknowledged with an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree.

While this graduation is the last in Roth’s time as the 13th president at Notre Dame, it also observes his commencing into the next great phase of his journey—just as it commemorates the next stage in a student’s voyage of discovery.

So at this commencement, Roth joined the class of 2014 together in celebrating not an ending to a school year but rather a next beginning in life.

Dr. Roth, the 13th president in the College’s 91-year history, has served since July 2003.

“I returned to Ohio just over a decade ago to assume the leadership of a beautiful, suburban, values-based college. As a result of the teamwork of an excellent staff, faculty and dedicated trustees, Notre Dame today is a vibrant and dynamic campus— one of the finest, small Catholic baccalaureate colleges in the Great Lakes region,” Dr. Roth said.

years previously, Dr. Roth recognized the need for Notre Dame to grow. His expertise in enrollment management helped the College emerge as a best practice in higher education.

Notre Dame’s full-time enrollment has grown 320 percent since 2003, while its total enrollment grew at a 150 percent rate. Dr. Roth attributed this to the outstanding work of the admissions office the past 10 years and the energetic and enthusiastic support of the College’s faculty, staff, coaches, alumni and friends.

Even in difficult economic times, Dr. Roth ensured that the College adhered to the values of its founders, the Sisters of Notre Dame, and to the College’s mission of serving the underserved.

Notre Dame is an opportunity college where 98 percent of its

current students receive financial aid. According to Dr. Roth, the responsibility to serve all—including the underprivileged—is the very core of a Notre Dame education.

“It is our moral and ethical responsibility as educators to teach our students not just how to earn a living but, more importantly, how to live a life,” Dr. Roth said.

Dr. Roth cites as his proudest accomplishments the establishment of an Academic Support Center for Students with Learning Differences (ASC), founding a nursing program in 2006, the College’s great ethnic and religious diversity and the success in maintaining its commitment to access and affordability through its generous financial aid programs.

The ASC was created in 2005 and is today one of the College’s jewels.

these young adults the chance to succeed through state-of-theart interventions, close personal attention and highly skilled tutoring.

In 2006, Notre Dame started a baccalaureate nursing program; today that program enrolls over 200 students on the South Euclid campus and another 175 R.N.-B.S.N. students online. It began offering a Master of Science in Nursing in spring 2014.

He previously served as an administrator and tenured faculty member at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pa. His long and accomplished career has encompassed finance, marketing, strategic planning, educational leadership and public policy.

As a faculty member at Mercyhurst, Dr. Roth was a member of the English department, founded the communications department and served as a professor of marketing in the Walker School of Business. As an administrator, he served as dean and vice president for academic affairs. Previously, he was vice president of enrollment, where he set admissions and enrollment records, increased the academic quality of matriculating students and diversified the student body.

Dr. Roth has widely published on the topic of higher education recruitment and retention. He has delivered numerous papers and presentations on a variety of topics, including strategic planning, the economics and history of the oil industry, administrative ethics, the impact of mass media on contemporary culture and higher education finance and public policy.

In 2004, Dr. Roth began a series of campus-wide renovations; Harks and Providence Residence Halls were remodeled and expanded.

In 2005, the Quinlivan Circle was dedicated, and the Clara Fritzsche Library was remodeled to include a smart classroom, the Falcon Café and the ASC. In 2007, the Administration Building was remodeled to accommodate additional faculty offices, the Parker Nursing Laboratory and more classroom space.

In 2008-2009, a much-needed series of physical improvements was completed, including the upgrading of campus dining facilities, the construction of two new apartmentstyle residence halls that house over 300 students and greatly expanded classroom and laboratory spaces.

To signal the College’s commitment to its Catholic identity, in 2008, through the generous support of dedicated alumni and friends of the College, Christ the King Chapel was restored to its original glory.

Strategic growth of the College has included recognizing the needs of the adult student, and Dr. Roth created the means to offer many programs online and enhanced the College’s graduate program offerings.

A catalyst for the College’s overall growth, Notre Dame athletics include 22 intercollegiate sports for women and men. During Dr. Roth’s tenure, Notre Dame has won three national championships in wrestling, most recently a NCAA Division II title in 2014, less than two years after the College formally transitioned to NCAA Division II. At Notre Dame, under Dr. Roth’s leadership, student-athletes are students first and athletes second, as the College strictly adheres to the NCAA “life in the balance” philosophy, which recognizes the need to properly focus on educating all students to be academically prepared, career-ready, good citizens and good people.

Under Dr. Roth’s leadership, Notre Dame has made strides to expand academic opportunities for students. The College initiated new programs, including the Intelligence Analysis and Research Program (IARP) and study in criminal justice, as well as the fully accredited Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

Under Dr. Roth’s leadership, employment at the College increased dramatically as well. The number of full-time faculty grew from 23 to 59. The number of employees increased from less than a hundred to approximately 250, making the College the largest non-governmental employer in South Euclid, Ohio, and making the city a true college town.

Additionally, the footprint of the campus grew substantially in 2010 with the acquisition of the former Regina High School. Today Regina Hall houses classrooms; offices for student organizations, adult and online programs, development and alumni, athletics and campus ministry; and Regina Chapel.

Mother Mary Evarista Harks built the physical and academic foundation of the College. She opened the institution at Ansel Road, moved it to its current campus in South Euclid, built the east wing of the Administration Building and secured the institution’s full accreditation.

Mother Mary Vera Niess ’28, SND, Ph.D. Mother Mary Vera Niess instituted development and alumni programs. She launched the first successful campaign to raise money for the building of a residence hall, created the official publication of the alumnae association and encouraged students to collect and make donations to congregations overseas. She encouraged faculty to attend national conventions and increased students’ roles in local school and community activities.

Sr. Mary Agnes Bosche, SND, M.A. Sr. Mary Agnes Bosche enhanced the College’s academic programs and cultivated student life. She established four-year programs for the Bachelor of Arts and the Bachelor of Philosophy in Education; hired faculty, encouraging them to pursue advanced degrees; required student attendance at daily worship services; and started extracurricular organizations and activities, including the orchestra, the glee club, theatre, a debate club, an athletic association and the student newspaper.

Mother Mary Anselm Langenderfer, SND, M.A. Mother Mary Anselm Langenderfer changed the administrative structure as well as the physical campus of the College. She built and opened Harks Hall, constructed a provincial house and erected Regina High School. She also introduced a new board of trustees, helped organize a lay advisory committee and appointed a full-time president.

Sr. Mary Ralph Fahey, SND, Ph.D. Sister Mary Ralph Fahey developed the College’s reputation as a leader in religious life and women’s education. She served on a panel discussion, “Educational Opportunities for Women,” as part of a presentation by the Catholic Federation of Women’s Clubs in Cleveland and made Notre Dame one of the few Catholic women’s colleges in the country to offer a major in physics.

Sr. Mary Loyole Gabel ’30, SND, M.A. Sister Mary Loyole Gabel further established the financial and physical foundation of the College. She solicited donations and secured funding, including a government loan, for the addition of the west wing of the Administration Building and the construction of Providence Hall. She formed new business contacts in Youngstown, Toledo and Cleveland and built relationships with government officials in Chicago.

Sr. Mary Inez McHugh, SND, Ph.D. Sr. Mary Inez McHugh expanded spiritual and academic offerings at the College. She led the alumnae association to conduct the Friday evening Mass, initiated the first series of educational radio programs sponsored by the College, started the first session of summer school for lay students, opened the art department’s Marian Studio, set up a new foods lab and began a sequence of seminar-based classes for students.

The Transformative Presidents of Notre Dame College

Sr. Mary Luke Arntz oversaw construction projects and laid the groundwork for the College’s national marketing. She built Connelly Center, Alumnae Hall and the Clara Fritzsche Library. She also set out to help graduates “with the idea not just of getting a job but also of becoming a better person.” She received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant to help restructure American literature and was named as one of the “Outstanding Educators of America.”

Sr. Mary Marthe Reinhard ’52, SND, M.A. Sr. Mary Marthe Reinhard ensured the existence of the College at a time when women’s schools in the United States were closing, merging or going co-ed to survive. She nearly doubled enrollment from 495 to 790 students, mainly by implementing educational programs that reached out to nontraditional and minority students, including working mothers and Hispanics. She also paid off all debts and enlarged the endowment from $250,000 to $3.5 million.

Sr. Marla Loehr ’60, SND, Ph.D. Sr. Marla Loehr improved student experiences and the organizational structure of the College. She launched the Master of Education program, opened a career development center on campus and completed construction of the Keller Center.

She implemented a multicultural awareness program to increase access to and strengthen retention of minorities. She also expanded the board of trustees to include lay members and increased endowment and fundraising efforts.

Gay Culverhouse, Ed.D. Gay Culverhouse continued to grow academic and admissions programs and enhance technology and facilities at the College. She launched a joint paralegal studies program with Lakeland Community College and created a recruitment partnership with a South Korean high school. She prepared the library to add electronic resources, implemented a student information system, installed the first ATM on campus and remodeled and relocated the College’s archives and records center.

Anne Deming, Ph.D. Anne Deming enhanced student enrollment, advanced technology and continued physical renewal at the College. She increased recruitment of international students and made the decision to go co-educational in 2001. She implemented campus-wide computer and email networks and launched the College’s website. She also restored the McHugh Room and improved Harks Hall, the Connelly Center, Providence Hall, student services offices, the Keller Center and the Willow Room for commuter students.

Wierzbic first faced the unknown in her scholarly pursuits when her parents developed financial issues three years ago, and she could no longer afford to attend Case Western Reserve University.

She was three years into an engineering degree there.

Guided by her passion for science and the spirit of the Sisters of Notre Dame, Notre Dame College student Meaghan Wierzbic has studied and worked her way through several setbacks—and found faith in the nature of her emerging education and career.

But the ministries of the Sisters of Notre Dame inspired her to keep trying.

So she explored uncertainty by serving as a biology research assistant at Case Western Reserve’s University Farm while taking part-time classes for a year and a half at Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C). The courses were all she could afford, and she struggled with what to do next.

Wierzbic then was moved by a chance meeting that introduced her to Notre Dame and encouraged by a connection with a faculty member at the College.

And she has re-surfaced with a new strategy: She is an environmental science and ecology student and Choose Ohio First STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Scholar at Notre Dame now. And she has presented her own study—on the water quality of Nine Mile Creek in South Euclid, Ohio—at national and state conferences.

Driven by her awe for the environment, she is now on track to graduate from Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 2015 and plans to pursue a doctorate in microbial ecology research.

Inspired by the Sisters of Notre Dame While an undergraduate in polymer science and civil engineering at Case Western Reserve, Wierzbic attended retreats with a spiritual advisor at the Sisters of Notre Dame Chardon, Ohio, Provincial Center.

“I have always been impressed with how the Sisters of Notre Dame help empower women in different areas of the world, how they inspire them to change their lives to something better,” Wierzbic said. “Their discussion and reflection on faith and how it becomes action inspired me.”

When Wierzbic’s family could no longer afford her tuition at Case Western Reserve, she not only lost her education and career plan, but her place to live in campus housing, as well.

“Not being able to finish my degree, not being able to succeed, not being about to research again was demoralizing for me,” she said.

But the ministries of the Sisters helped her keep going.

She was able to keep her job at the Case Western Reserve University Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio, where she had been serving as a research assistant while a student. And she found a friend to stay with for a while, too, and then was able to rent a room where she worked.

Moved by a chance meeting

general education requirements at Tri-C, Wierzbic met a Hunting Valley police officer who would become her boyfriend, Steve Balaban ’14.

In addition to working in law enforcement, Balaban was a student in the security policy studies master’s degree program at Notre Dame at the time. He suggested Wierzbic speak to someone at the College about its biology major.

“I knew of the Sisters of Notre Dame through my spiritual connections, but I had never thought of going to Notre Dame.

Then Steve mentioned it. He was impressed at how the College really seems to care,” Wierzbic said.

While visiting the campus, Wierzbic had a planned meeting with Tracey Meliander, Ph.D., assistant professor of biology, who leads the environmental science and ecology studies concentration at the College.

“I had worked with the biology program at Case Western Reserve, as well as their environmental engineering programs. And you might not think it, but this program at Notre Dame is already a couple of years ahead of Case in the ecology area,” she said.

Encouraged by a College faculty member Wierzbic said she was drawn to the Catholic ministry of the College, the caring of its community and the strength of its environmental science program, yet she still couldn’t afford it.

While living at Case Western Reserve’s University Farm, Wierzbic encountered her next unexpected result. This was a good one.

But she immediately connected with Meilander. The faculty member earned her doctorate from Kent State University, where Wierzbic would like to continue her study as part of the Ph.D. program in microbial ecology.

Meilander also is resourceful.

Because Wierzbic had lived in Ohio for three years at Case Western Reserve, she met the residency requirement to become a STEM scholar. Meilander, who is project director for the Choose Ohio First STEM program, helped recommend her for the award.

That scholarship helped make Notre Dame affordable for Wierzbic.

Wierzbic still works at the Case Western Reserve University Farm as a research assistant, and she is a full-time student at Notre Dame now.

And through her classes, especially with Meilander, Wierzbic has furthered her love of scientific inquiry.

“I like answering questions.

Half the time you don’t find the answers you are looking for, but looking for the answers is 90 percent of the fun,” she said.

Driven by her awe for the environment It was Wierzbic’s Catholic spirit that also helped lead her to environmental science.

“I think I do connect environmental science and ecology with spiritual things,” she said. “When you are in nature, everything is changing.

There are these awesome moments walking outside, like when the light catches on the water, and you realize God is pretty cool.”

The social justice efforts of the Sisters of Notre Dame also guided her interest in ecology studies.

“Our neglecting the environment affects the poorest of people on a larger scale,” she said. “Many in developing countries are more dependent on the environment, like those who live near the water, on islands or near the coast. Climate change can affect them more than most.”

Working with Meilander and classmates this year, Wierzbic has been instrumental in implementing the College’s Cleveland Foundationfunded Fenn Grant program, which provides environmental science and ecology students with service learning opportunities. Most recently Wierzbic helped to educate Girl Scouts in poverty-stricken areas of Cleveland about water preservation.

“Presenting at conferences and being a part of all the different programs at Notre Dame gives me a lot of confidence to work with different individuals now and to help them do what they need to succeed,” she said.

Found faith in emerging education …

Wierzbic’s current line of environmental investigation started as part of her research methods course with Meilander. With the service learning curriculum, the class conducted scientific studies for the nonprofit Friends of Euclid Creek.

Wierzbic recently presented her research on the water quality of Nine Mile Creek in the Euclid Creek Watershed to the Ohio Academy of Science and at the National Nonpoint Source Pollution Monitoring Conference. As part of the national convention, which was hosted in Cleveland, Wierzbic was chosen to lead the scientists and scholars who came from around the country on a tour of the watershed where she conducted her analysis.

Her project focuses on the creek, which has featured a series of rock step-down pools since 2008.

Wierzbic said the system was installed to generate the more natural flow of a stream in place of the rush of a channelized basin in an effort to better filter pollutants out of the creek and help reduce erosion of the surrounding wetlands.

“This restoration project cost a lot of money, but through class I

discovered not a lot of research has been conducted on how stream restoration projects in general affect the overall health of the stream, especially those that employ this steppool design,” Wierzbic said.

So she has been monitoring the water quality up-, mid- and downstream, measuring for pollutants. Wierzbic hypothesized she would find at least two contaminants but that the levels of both would be less concentrated at the end of the creek due to the filtering effect of the step-down system of pools and the surrounding wetlands.

The two contaminants she monitored: chloride, which is generally a pollutant found in fresh water, and phosphate, which is actually a nutrient but if present in concentrated levels—like it often is in areas near urban storm sewers— can degrade water quality.

Over eight months of study, Wierzbic found phosphate levels in Nine Mile Creek are significantly higher than the federal standard average, but the concentration of the pollutant does lessen downstream.

“It’s still early to tell, but the step-down design does seem to help,” she said.

Now, just as one answer in life or science often leads to several more questions, Wierzbic would like to further investigate whether the phosphate levels are affected by the fertilizers used at area golf courses. She said the nutrients likely run off the fairways and the greens into storm sewers and then the watershed.

As for the chloride levels, her findings, at first, were incomplete because the monitoring equipment she had been using went missing.

So she only was able to collect measurements over two months, not enough to postulate an explanation— just one more uncertainty.

But this, too, has had a happy ending.

… and career While Wierzbic appeared to be set back again, just recently, one more answer came for her by way of Notre Dame: Meilander found the resources to replace the tools.

And this line of research also is promising—and could lead to a long profession.

Since she has started monitoring again, Wierzbic has found chloride concentrations in the creek as high as three or more times the federal standard. So as she finishes the study, she will determine not only whether her hypothesis is supported but also—like with phosphate levels—then can propose a cause and how to measure its validity, too.

She said the creek could have higher concentrations of chloride due to runoff of the salt used to treat the nearby South Euclid streets in winter.

And now Wierzbic could come full circle during her senior year, as well as into graduate school and her career.

After she finishes her water quality measurements and the recommendations—and likely the further studies—that will stem from them, she could use her civil engineering background to recommend ways to help prevent the salt and fertilizers from entering the creek.

“It’s been pretty amazing, all these different connections in my life,” she said. “They give me hope for the future.”

Anne Sexton Dowdell ’49 received the Community Award from Mount Alverna Village. The honor was awarded to Anne and her late husband, Dr. William F. Dowdell, at the organization’s Roots and Wings Inaugural Gala. The couple was honored for Anne’s volunteer work with the organization, as well as her husband’s contributions as medical director.

Susan Murphy ’87 celebrated Mother’s Day on campus with her daughter Lauren Pedone ’14, who graduated from Notre Dame May 11 with a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design.

1970 Regina M. Breig Kupecky ’70 was recognized as the 2014 Alumna of the Year by the Notre Dame College Alumni Association.

The honor was bestowed at this year’s Spring Luncheon and Annual Business Meeting at Windows on the River in Cleveland.

Regina was presented the award by fellow classmate, Alumni Board Member-at-Large and nominator Candy Clemson ’70.

After graduating from Notre Dame with a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, Regina went on to obtain a master’s degree from John Carroll University. Regina is a nationally recognized author and advocate for adopted children, working in the field for more than 30 years. Regina has a special interest with children with attachments disorders and conducts training nationally and internationally on many adoption and attachment-related topics. She was honored with

the Adoption Worker of the Year Award in 1990 from the Ohio Department of Human Services.

Regina is a familiar face at Notre Dame as she has served on the Alumni Board, particularly as the Board’s religious chair. In that role she organized such events as the Pilgrimage of Peace, where alumni and friends traveled to multiple houses of worship within the Cleveland area for a day of prayer and reflection.

Liz Bagdonas Maxwell ’01 and her husband, Nicholas, are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Adelean Grace. Adelean was born on March 25, 2014, weighing 8 pounds and 4 ounces and measuring 21 inches long. She joins her big brother, Aidan.

Jackie Winkel ’08 married Andy Palko, head athletic trainer at Waynesburg University, on New Year’s Eve 2013. The ceremony was attended by alumni Beth Ford ’00, Nick Formica ’07 and Lauren Tiller ’13. The ceremony was also officiated by an alumnus, Chris Palagyi ’08. Jackie now resides in the Pittsburgh area where she is an allocations and programs coordinator for the Washington County Community Foundation.

2010 Former Notre Dame track and field athlete Mike Mannozzi ’10 earned a spot on the United States World Cup Team, competing at the World Race Walking Cup Championships in May in Tainan, China.

Mannozzi placed eighth overall at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Cup Trials in the 20K Masters Open, completing in 1:31.10.

Not only was his time good enough for a top-10 finish and a position on Team USA, but it also was Mannozzi’s personal best in the event.

While at Notre Dame, Mannozzi, who is from Youngstown, Ohio, captured the Falcon track and field program’s first national championship in 2010, when he won the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics race walking title at the indoor track and field national tournament.
