Qualberta, the first commisary of the School Sisters de Notre Dame, who left the Motherhouse in Horazdovice, Czech— oslovakia with a band of five sisters to es— tablish a Motherhouse in America for the purpose of educating the children of par— rents of Czech descent and all other youth who would come to them.

Sister Mary Qualberta headed the first group of Sisters who came to America in 1910. She remained Superior of the Com— munity the first nineteen years. In 1929, because of ill health, Sister Qualberta resigned her position as Superior. She died in March 1939.

C%ONE of us felt any different that September.

We were older, but the fact was, we had reached a certain dignity, which we had looked forward to for years. Actually being a senior was almost difficult for us to believe. But it was true, and as we once again resumed classes, and the added responsibilities that come with being seniors, a new feeling came with the

new experience.

With Sr. Magdalen as our sponsor, Ramona Kobza, Angela Wright and Alice Sledge at the helm, with 16 of us to help navi— gate the course, we had unlimited confidence in our prowess to make this year our best year. As we cruised through the months, our attention was called to such memories as the publication of our school paper, the “Spotlight", the Sodality reception, CSMC activities,'weekly Scdality meetings and the Study Club

meetings.

Then there was our Christmas Angel Party with the Play “Hotel Bethlehem", our class rings, and a pause for that wonderful Christmas vacation! Back again, after that invigorating re— fresher, we put on our best smiles for the senior pictures. Next, the yearbook with pictures, ads and more ads. Another pause.

This time much different. The pause that refreshes the spirit—— looked our last high school retreat. Finally—that which we bacca— senior banquet, the junior forward to the whole year — —

laureate and graduation.

We are on the threshold of life —we are about to embark on a great venture——but we are confident that whatever the future has in store for us, we will not falter. With Christ as our the high navigator and Mary as our co —pilot, we will rememberendeavor and school career in to high our us ideals presented to practice them throughout our future days.

(Your; dhziifo my We were anxious for this year, and when September rolled around we were eager for the work ahead. We had visions of typewriters, electro-rnagnets, and shorthand symbols. We looked forward to the day on which we could type, and write in shorthand.

Our sponsor, Sr. M. Alexia, and our class officers, Rita Maly, Helen Enarson, and Joan Babb were soon planning "Sunflower Glen" in which all the members of the class participated.

Then toward the close of the year, we began excited planning for our one big social event — the Iunior Senior —

—

banquet. Followed secret meetings, mysterious sneakings in and out of room 202, frenzied practice during noon period, last minute preparations—but the final result — exquisitely decorated tables against a background of green and lavender with little bunches of vio— lets peeping from every nook and cranny — we were exultant.

diam o’fi'ito '1}, With one year of experience in higher education, we sophmores felt confident of a successful year as the fall semester of 1949 began. We were a trifle older and had another class beneath us to look down upon.

Patricia Murphy, Elaine Zelinger and Patricia Garvey became the choice of the class on the day of the class elections. With the aid of our class sponsor!

Sr. M. Vincent, we were able to launch and bring to successful termination many activities and projects.

As all work and no play makes Iill a dull girl, we gave a class party and

presented "A Shower of Roses". Eager to aid the missions we held a bake sale, giving the proceeds to the CSMC

unit.

There were also our daily assign—

ments, our Latin teams, the Res Geste, geometric circles, book reports. We

hope we did them justice. Then there were Sodality positions, reports, quizzes, musicals and radio skits; 'volley ball teams, and the “Spotlight" printing staff. We are looking forward to another great year, next year as Juniors.

can; 0%1190 '13 Our freshmen year has just been completed. We can look back over the span of months and honestly say our first year has been a success.

Twenty—five of us began our high school career, speculatively at first, until we got into the swing of it all, then whole—heartedly, striving for the masterly attainment of our subjects.

Under the able guidance of Sr. M. Assumpta, our class sponsor, and the leadership of Carmelita Kobza, Therese Kisicki and Betty Kay Pitner, our class officers, we were able to launch our class project, a Baloon Party, quite

successtully. During this first year we mostly looked, and accumulated many ideas from our upper classmen. These we will put forth in our activities of next year.

Our greatest achievement this year, however, was our inception into the Sodality of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

We have become her children and have taken her into our midst to imi— tate and practice her virtues and study her life. We hope that next year when we are a little more mature, we will be a credit to her in the loving homage we shall render her.

sodality of Notre Dame is the spirit of Notre a tender love for and

Dame. In it we have found a way to foster and develop a greater devotion to Mary.

The sodality was officially organized on December 8, 1928 when the first sodality reception took place. On February 29, 1929 the sodality of the 1mmaculate Conception was affiliated to the Prima Primaria. Under the able direction of Sister Qualbertina, its first moderator, the sodality developed a spirit which characterizes it to the present day.

Under the patronage of our Blessed Lady and St. Therese of lesus, the sodality has continued to exercise its influence over the students. The Marian love and devotion which prompted the activities of the sodality in its inception have not changed. The sodality year of 1949 and 1950 is Characterized by the same love for Mary and Her Son. The installation of officers, a ”get-acquainted" party, probation and in— struction of 31 candidates for membership in the sodality, the clay of reception, and a day of recollection conducted by the Rev. R. Gruenke C.S.S.R. were highlights of the first semester sodality doings. Weekly meetings, with their varied reports, spiritual exercises, skits, and quizzes, were presented throughout the year. The ping—pong tournament with its forty participants was a bright spot during the winter months; ”Three days in heaven"—our annual retreat. Our last tribute to Mary at Notre Dame was our May crowning ceremony to the hall shrine and the chapel.

It is through its active committees that the sodality is able to foster devotion to Mary and keep the fire of this devotion ever burning. These Committees are three: Our Lady's Committee, which supervises all the devotions to our Lady, especially in the recitation of the Little Office and through constant reminders on the bulletin boards; the Mission Committee, which promotes the collection of old clothing, toys, and stamps for the missions and also promotes a true missionary spirit in the sodality,- the Eucharistic committee, which fosters and promotes love for the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

As we conclude our last sodality year, we breathe a prayer heavenward, that our future lives may be dominated by a burning love for Mary and Her

Divine Son.

Putting out a newspaper is not all fun, even though it is published to enlighten and entertain. Hours of la— laborious writing and rewriting, proof reading, running down rumors, check— ing and rechecking names and facts are a few of the numerous duties of the Spotlight staff.
