T he paddock is a bit like a fair : you can always f ind somet hing for ever y t ast e. But t he r eal at t r act ion is t he char act er s you can meet in a place like t his. Because if on t he one hand it is per haps t he only moment when t he st ar s of four wheels come dow n t o planet Ear t h among or dinar y mor t als, on t he ot her hand t her e is an ent ir e human fauna t hat r evolves ar ound it , living and swar ming in t he paddock .

Phot ogr apher s, r epor t er s, f r eelancer s, jour nalist s, scr ibbler s, advent ur er s, self ie and aut ogr aph hunt er s, but also simple fans who for a few hour s want t o exper ience up close t he magic of a wor ld t hat would ot her w ise be of f-limit s (and in essence r emains so) t o most people. This was no f luke: Rowland built his t it le on four vict or ies, t hr ee second-place f inishes, and t wo pole posit ions, displaying impr essive consist ency acr oss t he 16 r aces of t he 20 24?20 25 season. For me, t his was t he second t ime r et ur ning t o t his fascinat ing count r y. Per u of fer s an incr edible number of t hings t o see and phot ogr aph, sur pr ising you w it h t he r ichness and var iet y of it s landscapes and subject s? per fect ly in t une w it h a phot ogr aphic jour ney. You ar r ive in Lima and f ind your self over look ing t he Pacif ic Ocean, t hen t he jour ney cont inues as you begin t o gain alt it ude, r eaching t he cit ies of Ar equipa and Puno, wher e t r adit ion and folk lor e can be felt r ight away. The t r ip goes on, cr ossing sever al mount ain passes up t o t he highest point , over 4,80 0 met er s above sea level, wher e incr edible scener y opens up befor e you and you can admir e t he gr eat snow-cover ed mount ains w it h t heir glacier s. Cont inuing along r at her demanding r oads, you also r each t he vast Lake Tit icaca, so lar ge t hat half of it ext ends int o Bolivia. You can encount er lar ge her ds of alpacas, vicuñas, llamas, and many ot her animals and bir ds, along w it h endless landscapes and a diver se, w ild nat ur e. Per u is also k now n for t he char m of it s t housand color s, and indeed, wher ever you look , you ar e sur r ounded by capt ivat ing hues. Encount er s w it h local people ar e f r equent ? never -for ced smiles, war m hospit alit y almost ever ywher e, and a genuine w illingness t o be phot ogr aphed. Men and women, but especially childr en, w it h t heir lar ge eyes, dar k complexions, and ver y int ense gazes, pr oved t o be per fect subject s for our phot ogr aphic por t r ait s. Shor t ness of br eat h and t he alt it ude can cause some minor discomfor t and amplif y fat igue dur ing t he climbs, but once you r each t he t op, ever yt hing is for got t en t hank s t o t he splendor befor e your eyes: t he gr eat peak s of t he Andes r ise in f r ont of you, some r eaching up t o 6,80 0 met er s. The hist or y of t he past can be felt ever ywher e up her e, and when you visit famous sit es in per son? such as Machu Picchu, Ollant ayt ambo, and t he Sacr ed Valley? you t r uly under st and t he gr eat ness of t his people. It is a jour ney I r ecommend t o ever yone, not just phot ogr apher s. We exper ienced many unfor get t able moment s and count less oppor t unit ies t o capt ur e beaut if ul images. Ever y phot o is undoubt edly connect ed t o an emot ion exper ienced, conf ir ming t hat phot ogr aphy is not only a document , but also a link t o our ow n lived exper iences.?

The speed of life over whelms us, and we ar e car r ied along by t he cur r ent , like a cr owd chasing somet hing we don?t r eally k now or f ully under st and. No, it?s not a r ace on a t r ack , it?s not r unning against a st opwat ch. It?s not even r acing against t ime t o piece scat t er ed f r agment s t oget her. And yet , it isr unning against our selves? against our ow n inclinat ions, against our ow n well-being. A change of pace is ur gent ly needed, a ?k alipè,? as Himalayan peoples r epeat . But it?s t he same philosophy shar ed by mount ain communit ies all over t he wor ld, lit er ally ?f r om t he Alps t o t he Andes?: a slow, shor t st ep t hat allows us t o discover our limit s and r econnect w it h our inner self. Finding our selves again? all of us, w it h our selves and w it h ot her s? is all we t r uly need.
