We are proud to introduce our new collection and the birth of an Icon: The ABLE bag. Inspired by the indomitable spirit of 1968 and the extraordinary performance of Tanzanian marathon runner John Stephen Akhwari at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.
Our collection pays tribute to a year of seismic shifts in arts, culture, politics, and sports. 1968 was a turning point in modern history, a year marked by upheavals, triumphs, and powerful moments that echoed around the globe. Amidst these events, one man’s resilience stood out and resonated with millions, setting the stage for the birth of The Able Collection.
The story of John Stephen Akhwari in the 1968 Olympics is one of unyielding spirit and tenacity. Despite suffering a fall during the race, Akhwari continued to run with a severely injured knee and dislocated joint, finishing last but earning a permanent place in the hearts of spectators worldwide as an Olympic hero. His famous words, “My country did not send me 5,000 miles to start the race, they sent me 5,000 miles to finish the race,” encapsulate the spirit of this collection.
The new able bag intelligently features the ubiquitous leather bag handle, which has been the common denominator amongst history’s most iconic leather goods accessories and continues to serve as a symbolic representation of urban professional lifestyle, now given a new function to serve as a beacon of perseverance.
“For us, this collection is very different from anything we have ever done”, said Nosakhare Kingsley Osadolor, Creative Director. “It wasn’t just about making leather goods, – it’s a symbol of strength, endurance, and an affirmation of the human spirit. It’s us as creatives saying to our fellow creatives, We are ABLE”.
To encapsulate the message Creative Director, Nosa chose to capture 7 members of the Nosakhari leadership team spanning Art Director, Product development and Design as official models for the collection.
