‘The Dragon of Wantley’? I hear you say, never heard of it, what’s wrong with Cinderella or Aladdin?

Well we thought we’d go for something a bit different this year so chose this script which is a brilliant update, by Norman Robbins, of a traditional pantomime originating in Victorian times. All the usual pantomime elements are there in abundance including, in addition to the slapstick, cross-dressing and corny jokes mentioned above, a thigh slapping principal boy, a demure damsel in distress and a sundry collection of witches, wicked barons and dragons. As usual there will be a bar available to help engender the party spirit!

ANSTEY. CROPSTON, THURCASTON AND ROTHLEY The National Arboretum A talk by Roger Hailwood Monday October 24, 2016 Woodhouse Eaves Village Hall at 7.30 p.m.

The Friends of Charnwood Forest are pleased to announce an illustrated talk by Roger Hailwood. Roger Hailwood is a guide for the National Arboretum. He is part of their promotional team as a speaker at venues throughout the UK. At Alrewas, where he lives, he is regarded as the village historian and he has published several books.

In Alrewas he has been a youth leader, a church chorister and a Parish Councillor.

Roger’s talk about the National Arboretum will be illustrated by slides and will cover its foundation and development, and will give a snapshot of the over three hundred memorials on the site. Further Information Peter Bertram 01162 100 572

Calke Abbey and its gardens There was a large audience of members and guests on Monday September 19th to hear a copiously illustrated talk by Celia Sanger, who is a volunteer at Calke.

Calke Abbey was the home of the HarperCrewe family for several hundred years. In 1985 the burden of such a great estate became too much and it was acquired by the National Trust. The repairs and maintenance of such a property had proved too great for the owners and the National Trust was faced with neglect on a grand scale. Nothing had ever been thrown away which was both a problem and an enormous resource. Celia’s illustrations showed us the good times, the bad times and how the National Trust had brought house and gardens back to life.

On Monday 10th October our Speaker Mr. Derek Holloway reiterated the “life story” of a 24Cent. American Postage Stamp.

During 1910, the United States Post Office had made a number of experimental trials of carrying mail by air. These were shown by the first stamp in the world to picture an airplane (captioned as "aeroplane carrying mail"), one of the U.S. Parcel Post stamps of 1912–13.

The Inverted Jenny (also known as an Upside Down Jenny, “Jenny Invert”) is a United States 24cent Postage stamp first issued on May 10, 1918 in which the image of the Curtiss JN-4 airplane in the centre of the red and blue design appears upside-down; it is probably the most famous error in American philately.

At least three misprinted sheets were found during the production process and destroyed, but it is believed that only one misprinted sheet of 100 stamps got through unnoticed, and stamp collectors have spent the ensuing years trying to find them all.

Collector William T. Robey was the first one of those; he had written to a friend on May 10 mentioning that "it would pay to be on the lookout for inverts". On May 14, Robey went to the Post Office to buy the new stamps, and as he wrote later, when the clerk brought out a sheet of inverts, "my heart stood still". He paid for the sheet, and asked to see more, but the remainder of the sheets were normal.

Robey sold the sheet to noted Philadelphia dealer Eugene Klein for $15,000. Klein placed an advertisement on the first page of the May 25, 1918 "Mekeel’s Weekly Stamp News"

The old formal gardens, requiring enormous maintenance and many gardeners, are gone forever but in their place is a beautiful estate which we can all enjoy. The deer park, with many red deer, flourishes and the lime avenue, planted in 1846, is as fine as ever.

offering to sell copies of the invert ($250 for fully perforated examples, $175 for stamps with one straight edge), but announced in his following week’s ad that the entire sheet had been purchased by an individual collector.

The buyer, who paid $20,000, was "Colonel" H. R. Green.

Klein, had kept a block of four for himself and Green had one copy placed in a locket for his wife. This gold and glass locket displayed the Inverted Jenny on one side, and a "regular" Jenny stamp on the other. This locket was offered for sale for the first time by the Siegel Auction Galleries Rarity Sale, held on May 18, 2002. It did not sell in the auction, but the philatelic press reported that a Private Treaty sale was arranged later for an unknown price.

The Stamp’s chequered career continued including miscellaneous sales and forgery.

Even today legal investigation is still taking place concerning various copies of the Stamp.

We were very grateful to Derek for such an indepth revelation of this famous Stamp and look forward to hearing his next subject sometime soon.

Rothley Community Library The Race Evening went down a storm at the Rothley Centre last month, and it could become an annual fixture. The hall was full, and everyone bet on a videoed race. Excitement grew through the evening, people urging their horse on and cheers for the winner. You could have a great time and bet on every race for £10. About £570 was raised for the library, a fantastic result for a very good evening. Local businesses sponsored races and gave very appealing raffle prizes: Corts, Dolce & Verde, the Woodies, Rothley Court Hotel, Cuppas, Gavin Taylor Haridressing, the Post Office, the Fish & Chip Shop, Elan, The Flower Shop and Phoenix-risen Cards and many others made it happen.

Mountsorrel Poppy Appeal 2016 In the aftermath of the First World War people wanted to remember those who had given their lives for peace and freedom. The poppy, the only thing which grew following the devastation on the Western Front in Flanders and Picardy, was chosen as the emblem of remembrance and to coincide with the third anniversary of the Armistice on 11 November 1921 poppies were sold to raise money for the ex-Service community. Ninety-five years on and that tradition continues with the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

The Appeal benefits service people and their families from all the campaigns from the 1st World War to today – remember there has only been one year (1968) since the end of 2nd World War when a British Service person has not been killed on active duty somewhere across the world. The long term legacy of support that is needed for our service personnel and their families as a result of operations in Afghanistan alone is stark. There, between 2003 and 2015, we suffered 454 dead and several thousand wounded in action. The Royal British Legion, with your support, and in co-operation with partner charities including Help for Heroes and individual Service and Regimental charities is leading the way in delivering that support.

Nationally the Poppy Appeal raised over £34 million last year but we spend at least £1.7 million every week of the year on our longstanding welfare support initiatives which include: ·

Running our Care Homes and Break Centres

Providing a Benefits and Money Advice service which has helped over 11,000 individuals to date;

·

Making direct Grants totalling £24 million awarded to 42 organisations;

The Talk commences at 2:30pm, entry is free of charge but donations to the Appeal will be appreciated and Poppies will be available as they will from locations across the village from the same day.

Mountsorrel Remembrance Services 2016 Armistice Day Service 11th November 2016 At 11:00 on 11th November there will be a Field of Remembrance Service at the Peace Garden (junction of Market Place and Sileby Road).

Remembrance Sunday 13th November 2016 The village parade to remember and honour the fallen in all conflicts will take place on Sunday 13th November leaving the Green at 2:30pm for the Remembrance Service at St Peter’s church, Market Place, at 3:00pm.

Don’t miss the Potter spell cast over deadline for Charnwood Museum secondary school place applications A magical spell will be cast over Charnwood Museum with the arrival of a new Harry Potter exhibition. The display opens on Saturday, October 15 and will feature illustrations of ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, which has been reimagined by illustrator Jim Kay.

PARENTS of children who are to start secondary school next year have until the end of October to apply for a place. Leicestershire County Council is encouraging parents and carers to submit their form on time to ensure their child does not miss out on a place in 2017. Moving to secondary school is not an automatic process, and parents need to ensure they have applied for a place before the closing date.

Last year, 95.5% of Leicestershire pupils attained their first preference for secondary school, compared to 94.2% in the previous year.

Cllr Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council cabinet member for children and families, said: We want as many children as possible to go to their first place of school, and the council has worked really hard to help achieve this. By completing the admissions form on time, parents can help ensure that this can continue.

The transfer process is the same for all secondary schools, whether they are community, voluntary controlled, voluntary aided, academy, trust, faith, free or studio schools. Parents can apply online at www.leics.gov.uk/admissions or call 0116 305 6684 for general enquiries about the admissions process.

His artwork has been published in a new illustrated edition of the book which was released last year. The display will feature original work including sketches, oils and digital prints.

There will also be a variety of merchandise available to buy, from copies of the illustrated book to Harry Potter soft toys and stationary.

The exhibition is part of the Loogabarooga Festival which opens on October 19 and celebrates children’s illustrated literature. Over the course of six days, the festival offers fun for all the family including a series of author talks, workshops and events at venues in Loughborough.

Councillor Hilary Fryer, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council said: “It’s so exciting to have the exhibition here as part of the Loogabarooga Festival.

“Harry Potter is such a well-loved story by children and adults alike, so it’s wonderful to be able to experience the magical world brought to life through these illustrations.”

The exhibition opens on Saturday, October 15, and runs until Sunday, January 8, 2017.

The Blue Santas are coming to town!

Leicester City Football Club and the Foxes Foundation will participate in the Santa Fun Run & Walk in Loughborough on Sunday 4th December. This means that entrants to this popular event will be able to select red or blue santa suits, and support a charity of their choice.

Over £500,000 has been raised for local and national charities in the eleven years

Great Birstall Bake Off White Horse Riding High after another successful Great Birstall Bake off and World’s Largest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support

and so far £940 was raised- a truly staggering figure.

The carthorse themed raffle stand was also a grand success and bunting helped to create a wonderfully rustic British village aesthetic, with an excellent selection of prizes with a delicious cake from David North at Rothley and beautiful flowers from Lilly and Grace to name only two.

This year there was also a bouncy castle, face painting, Nail bar and temporary Tattoos for the Children and some Sunday morning Jazz were added to the event which added to the ambience and fun of the day.

The flour dusting has settled on 2016's Great Birstall Bake Off, and with 44 entries and a great array of prizes, up for grabs, it was a great success.

All categories were superbly supported, with both genders and all ages competing for the most prestigious prize in Birstall's bakery calendar. The judging panel were astounded by the selection; in particular the ‘Under 16’ entries which were even more creative than ever.
