The Forced Break-up Sale of the Rothley Temple Estate in 1893

The title of the annual Lady Lecture at Rothley Parish Church to be held on Saturday 7th May at 10.30am. by Chairman of the Rothley Heritage Trust, Terry Sheppard. In 1892 there was a substantial unpayable mortgage debt outstanding on the estate which was called in by the Crown Life Assurance Company. An auction sale in London in 1892 was a flop. A new sale in October 1893 based on a second edition catalogue was held at the Bell Hotel in Leicester. The event did not attract a buyer for the major lot that included the old Babington Manor House, Rothley Temple, but some of the smaller lots went to local men from Rothley.

Significant for the future of Rothley, aspiring joiner/builder Frank Sleath bought Lot 14 at the junction of Woodgate and Wellsic Lane. He later turned it into the base for the building company F Sleath and Co that went through three generations. Sleath rode the boom years for building in Rothley that saw dozens of Victorian & Edwardian terraced houses added to its street frontages.

Then along came German-born Manchester Cotton Merchant Frederick Merttens. He purchased all the remaining lots in January 1894. Perhaps several things came together in his mind. The Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire Railway Company had been trying to get a Bill through parliament to allow the building of its London Extension to Marylebone from Derbyshire. It was successful in 1893, and Merttens spotted that it was planned to go through the western edge of the major lots on offer. If a Rothley Station could be placed there, Merttens reasoned that he could commute to his business in Manchester.

Perhaps he was drawn to the idea of becoming Lord of an English Manor, the Squire of a Village. He also had a dream of attracting city and townspeople to a new idea of a Rothley Garden Suburb to be laid out on the large tracts of land on offer, close to that possible station site.

Successful purchaser Merttens launched his own building boom soon after. He gave the land for the station free, to ensure it was built in Rothley, and not Swithland. The Temple manor house was extended and modernized, and a start made on mansions on the Ridgeway, the beginning of the Garden Suburb.

The Illustrated Lecture in the Church on Saturday May 7th at 10.30 will go back in time to the early 1800s to explore why that mortgage debt on the Temple Estate arose, and how valiant attempts were made by the Parker family to pay it down. Those attempts saw new Lord of the Manor, Harry Rainy Parker, with his two brothers, attempt to make a fortune on a 30,000 acre sheep station in New Zealand. Alas, that went bust too, and when he returned to Rothley in 1876, the Crown Life Assurance Company made him sign a Deed of Receivership requiring all estate incomes to go direct to the Receiver in London.

After the Lecture and a cup of Coffee, Terry Sheppard will conduct a short Village Walk to review the built evidence of that boom period ushered in by the break-up sale of 1893.

Rotary Support for Local Good Causes President of the Rotary Club of the Soar Valley Richard Hilliar announced on Monday donations to local charities in excess of £4,600.

Hedgehogs in need ONLY A few weeks to go, and hedgehogs will be waking up from their winter sleep.

Keep an eye out for them this Spring, and do try and offer food to any that you see. For hedgehogs are in trouble: numbers have more than halved in rural Britain in the last 15 years, where intensive farming and poor hedgerow management have destroyed their habitats. In the city it can be just as bad: fenced off gardens and lawns laid to concrete can mean death to a starving hedgehog.

There are now believed to be less than a million hedgehogs left in the entire UK, according to the ‘State of Britain’s Hedgehogs 2015’ report.

So here’s how to help your local hedgehog:

Much of the money was the result of the Club’s Christmas Santa appeal and at the time of that collection the Club donated the first night’s donations to help the flood relief efforts

by Rotary clubs in the North West & Yorkshire. In addition the Club has raised over £1,800 for LOROS and made grants to the Guides, Rotary Stars and the Air Ambulance.

Amongst the good causes to benefit on Monday were charities Rainbows, ProstAid, Shelterbox and “Wishes for Kids” and President Richard said “We are pleased to be making this initial tranche of grants to local charities. My chosen charity this year is the Air Ambulance and the Rotary club is planning a special fundraising event for this excellent cause later in the year”.

Your Home for Bowling this Summer After a very eventful 2015 during which the club were awarded £42,000 funding from Sports England, which enabled work to take place that transformed the bowling green’s surrounds, and enabled the installation of a new automatic irrigation system the club is in a first class position to provide excellent facilities for its members and new members for the new bowling season which opens on April 9th.

We are especially keen to encourage non bowlers both male and female to take up the sport, and to help achieve this the Club is offering a free year’s membership to all ages.

Compassion in Rwanda, Mountsorrel JFC support African Children.

"A member of Barrow Baptist Church, Richard Jayes, has recently returned from a trip to Rwanda, which was organised by the Compassion Child sponsorship Charity.

Compassion works throughout the world in 26 developing countries, in trying to free children from their poverty.

Whilst in Rwanda, a visit was made to the Gihinga Child Development Centre, near Kigali, which is one of the projects run by Compassion.

The children at the centre were given gifts of clothing and school materials , and a full football strip was kindly donated by the Mountsorrel Junior Football Club".

NORTH LEICESTER MGs AT THE MG & TRIUMPH SPARES DAY We’ve had a really busy start to 2016. We’ve had over 70 beginners start the couch to 5k in January; we have been on BBC Radio Leicester talking about the success of Team Anstey after getting noticed. Cars owned by two members of the North Leicester MG Club (NLMGC) were recently on display at a major classic car event, the MG and Triumph Spares Day. The show is held at Stoneleigh Park in Warwickshire annually, in February.

This year, nearly thirty car club stands were in attendance, split fairly evenly in their allegiance to either the MG or Triumph marques. Over two hundred trade stands were also present, catering for the needs of owners of cars produced by these two iconic British sports car manufacturers.

Amongst the MG club stands was one dedicated to the Jubilee and Limited Edition (J.U.L.E) variants of the MG Midget, MGB and MGC models built between 1962 and 1980. One of the cars on their stand was the 1980 MGB LE (Limited Edition) Roadster owned by Colin Readwin, the chairman of NLMGC. Colin has only owned the car for a couple of months, so he was pleasantly surprised when it was selected for inclusion in the J.U.L.E. display.

Representing the Charnwood-based club on the MGs on Track (MGoT) stand was the MGA of John Dignan. MGoT organises non-competitive track days at motor racing circuits, specifically for owners of road-going MGs. Although John’s MGA is well over 50 years old, his membership of MGoT reflects his enthusiasm for using it as a working sports car. Besides using the MGA on track days, John is a regular participant in rallying events. Council confirms increase in local element of Council tax

Look out for Real Eggs this Easter

Charnwood Borough Council has agreed to raise its share of council tax by less than 9p a week for a band D property.

The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust is asking you to be on the look out for real ‘Easter’ Eggs this coming Easter. Traditionally, this is a time when people give their garden a spring clean. However, this is also often the time that many garden birds start to lay their first clutch of eggs.

It is the first increase in the local element of council tax for six years and sees the annual charge for an average Band D property rise to £107.09, an increase of 4.36 per cent or £4.47 a year.

The decision was taken at a Council meeting tonight (February 29) when members also agreed to raise the Loughborough Special Rate, paid by residents of Loughborough and the equivalent of a parish precept in villages, by less than 3p a week. It means the annual charge is now £74.97, an increase of 1.99 per cent or £1.46.

Councillor Tom Barkley, Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “We feel that after five years of Council Tax freezes now is an appropriate time to bring in an increase.

“Government funding is reducing and our services are as efficient as they can be. I also feel they are very good services and according to our recent residents’ survey, most people are satisfied with them.

“Therefore, we want to do everything we can to make sure these services are maintained for the benefit of people living and working in Charnwood.”

Until recently councils had been required to hold a referendum if they wanted to increase council tax by two per cent or more.

However, changes announced by the Government last year mean shire district councils can consider an average band D increase of up to £5 per annum without the need for a referendum.

The Council approved the budget by a majority vote at tonight's meeting.

Charnwood Borough Council currently has the 19th lowest council tax charge out of 201 district councils in the country.

Neil Pilcher, Senior Conservation Officer, said “Easter is early this year and the winter weather has been remarkably mild which means that birds will also be nesting early. I would urge people to be careful.

The Trust has already had reports of blackbirds building nests in gardens. It only takes a moment for a nest to be accidentally destroyed or exposed to predators.”

The Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust recommends that you check your garden before starting work. Hedges are the most likely places to find nests, especially dense evergreen hedges such as Leylandii. However, working in the same area for long periods can also cause birds to abandon their nests. People should spend just a few minutes looking through their hedges and shrubs for signs of nests before starting work.

Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act all birds are protected whilst nesting. This protection starts from the moment they start building the nest until the young have fledged. The Trust recommends that if there is any doubt then the work should be postponed until the nesting season is over, which is generally accepted as 31st July.

What We Wore Stories and pictures of children's clothes, 1900-1999 An exhibition by three local women 



Three local women with a collection of children's clothes from the 20th century and an interest in textiles have put together a unique exhibition for the Loughborough Museum.

The three women are Felicity Austin and Biddy Saunders from Syston and Joy Lambell from Birstall. They have been collecting stories and photos of what people remember wearing when they were children, and would like to share these memories with the public, so are mounting an exhibition in the Charnwood Gallery in Loughborough Museum from February 6th until May 16th this year. The memories and the photos cover every aspect of children's lives, from school uniform to fancy dress; from baby clothes to swimming costumes. Clothes from their collection will also be on display, several dating back a hundred years to the Edwardian era.

You might think that this is a specialist subject that doesn't have any relevance to you, but these ladies think you'd be wrong! Why do they think that? 

Leicestershire Author Releases Debut Novel Inspired By His Dramatic Heritage

A LEICESTERSHIRE author is set to debut his first novel Broken Vows, an historical romance inspired by his maternal grandparents’ forbidden romance.

Set in New Zealand and Fiji during the 1930’s, Broken Vows is loosely based on the story of author Rohan West’s Grandfather Alec Robinson, an ordained Catholic priest who broke his vows after finding love with nurse Anne McLaughlin.

Sports marketing expert Rohan, 49, who lives in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire is delighted that his book is set for release after more than five years in the making.

“This has been a labour of love for me but it’s an inspiring story which I wanted to share,” he said. “The story of how my grandparents met, fell in love and eventually ran away together was a family secret for over 50 years.

“My Mum and Aunt only found out by accident, after some loose talk by a family friend.

“My Grandpa loved literature, so I wanted to honour their beautiful story by writing about it.”

The release of Broken Vows coincides with the 85th anniversary of the Napier Earthquake, in which the protagonists meet as nurse and patient.

“That earthquake still has great resonance in New Zealand,” added Rohan. “So having the book come out around the anniversary is fortuitous.”

Originally hailing from Palmerston North in New Zealand, Rohan has lived in Mountsorrel for two years and found that weekends in The Swan pub there, proved to be the best opportunity to put the finishing touches to his book.

“The original manuscript was too long and I needed to do some ruthless editing,” he said. “Being a first time author, I could see I’d fallen into the standard novice writer traps. Ultimately, I had to trim around 15% of the word count and put in some much needed additions in crucial areas.

“The crew down at The Swan are great. Some days I’d go in a nurse a single pint for an hour and a half while working on a chapter or two. It’s a great little pub with a good atmosphere and perfectly set up for aspiring writers.”

Broken Vows was released on 28 February by Kibworth-based Troubador Publishing.

The official book launch event is scheduled for Thursday 17 March at The Swan, 10 Loughborough Road, Mountsorrel LE12 7AT, starting at 5pm. All journalists and interested parties are welcome.
