Youth Café reopens after two burglaries, a Tarmac grant, great community support and a complete make over.

In a few weeks the Sorrel Youth Café has celebrated gaining financial support from Tarmac, a CRH company, faced the challenges left from two burglaries and has commemorated five years of providing youth work to young people in Mountsorrel.

Following a successful application to the Derbyshire Environmental Trust, the Café received £5000 via the Tarmac Landfill Communities Fund. With the generosity and support of local businesses and residents the café now has a new kitchen and make over.

Tim Deal, representing Tarmac said: We are delighted to be able to support the Sorrel Youth Café. It has been a trying time for the team, so we know how much benefit the improved facilities will bring for uses of the café.

In addition to the kitchen, which was provided by Howdens (Loughborough), the Café was able to redecorate and install a partition wall giving it a new upstairs confidential meeting space. Graham Lloyd, Youth Officer told us: On March 11th 2016 the Café had been providing local youth work services for five years and a makeover was a great way to celebrate this milestone. The grant, through the Landfill Fund, has enabled us to replace an old kitchen, which was becoming increasingly hard to use, with a brand new one.

The hands on work of decorating, installing the partition and general clean-up was undertaken by volunteers. David Stewart from Rockhill Carpentry kindly fitted the new kitchen. John Doyle the Chair of Trustees for the Café said: The support from the community and business has been amazing. There are too many to mention here, but a particular thanks has to go to Tarmac, Mountsorrel for their support with our grant and to British Gas who released 9 of their employees for a day to help decorate. A full list of those who contributed will be put on the Café window.

To celebrate the new developments a small relaunch of the Café was undertaken by the Mayor of Charnwood, John Capleton in his last week of office. The Café was one of his nominated charities for 2015/16.

With its new look and facilities, the Café is now looking to recruit more volunteers to help deliver both its youth and community café work. Anyone interested in finding out more about the Café, volunteering should contact Graham on 07775 616001 or email ruelloyd@btinternet.com

Group Leader Elizabeth Chew reports: “It was rather cold, grey and overcast above, and a quagmire in parts below, but we all managed to stay on our feet and glide relatively silently through the forest with great expectations of seeing everything on our list. We were incredibly fortunate to be led by Robin Perry, who has volunteered to share his knowledge

and expertise with us on our monthly visits.

While Robin managed to identify 25 different species of bird, either by sight or sound, the highlights for us were the woodpeckers, (green,lesser and great spotted) which we either saw, or heard drumming on tree trunks, or calling; three treecreepers scuttling up and down the tree trunks like mice, and a nuthatch flying from branch to branch. He also identified another 7 species at nearby Cropston Reservoir, including a sandpiper and 3 great crested grebes.

The forest was also home to bluebells, wood anemone, stitchwort, honeysuckle, violets and red and white campion and, when the sun came out, it shone like emeralds through the newly emerging leaves on the huge, ancient oak trees. Quite magical!”

Gaddesby 7 – A complete success!

After months and months of planning, the inaugural race of Team Anstey took place on Sunday 22nd May. The sun was shining; the supporters were out in force, including lots of residents of Gaddesby. The runners struggled through the heat and by all accounts thoroughly enjoyed the course.

THURCASTON AND CROPSTON OPEN GARDENS 2016

10th Anniversary The 10th Open Gardens event in the villages of Thurcaston and Cropston will take place this summer on the weekend of 25th and 26th June.

As a team, we are so very proud of all the work that has gone into making this race happen, and the marshals on the day were amazing, it’s always a great help at any race to hear a loud cheer and words of encouragement as you’re getting round.

We would also like to thank the sponsors that got involved in the event, Lowe Electrical, Sturgess of Leicester, Nicholls Colton Group. It was great to have some local companies showing their support and getting involved in the event.

We think our race is a great addition to the Leicester Road Running League, so hopefully it will all happen again, this time next year.

BRITAIN already has some of the worst obesity levels in Europe – only Malta and Turkey are worse.

And it will get worse: a new study warns that if present trends continue, then within 10 years Britain will have the highest proportion of fat women in Europe, and the most fat men, along with Ireland and Lithuania.

In 1975 the average Briton had a BMI of 23, which is considered healthy. Today that has risen to 27, with the average person now overweight, and headed for obesity. Obesity currently costs the health service £47 billion a year, just under HALF the ENTIRE NHS budget.

The study was done at Imperial College, London. Cancer Research UK predicts that obesity-related cancer will rise 45 per cent over the next two decades.

“It got a whole lot bigger” says Working together organisers of MME Charnwood to reuse and Forest Cycle Ride recycle The MME Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride, organised by local charity Alex’s Wish, reported its busiest year ever with over 250 cyclists recently taking to the 10, 20 or 50 mile routes.

Leicestershire and Rutland Reuse and Recycle Network. Upcycling and reusing unwanted items is being made easier in Leicestershire.

“The weather was just gorgeous,” says Emma Hallam, founder of Alex’s Wish a local Rothley based charity who raise money to fund clinical trials into finding treatments and, ultimately, a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy; a life limiting condition which affects boys across the UK including Emma’s son Alex, after whom the charity is named. “That certainly helped draw a few more cyclists out on the day. We are still receiving sponsorship money but to date over £10,000 has been raised making this our most successful Charnwood Forest Cycle Ride to date – both in terms of number of riders and the amount raised.”

Riders were equally happy with the event. Elizabeth Raouf said, “We love this event. Yet again it was beautifully organised and a fabulous ride. All of my colleagues enjoyed it and my daughter, who has just turned 14, joined us too. I hope to make the team bigger every year. Great news about the amount raised....well done!"

Dave Haywood cycled the 50 mile route which was new for 2016 and said, "Thank you, thank you for today. Really, really enjoyed the 50 mile bike ride round beautiful Charnwood. Can't tell you how brilliantly the course was laid out. I didn't know the area at all but found the arrows and directions where brilliant. Would definitely like to do it again next year. Thank you again."

Jerry Parker also did the 50 mile route but suggested a new challenge – which the organisers are considering for 2017’s event. Jerry said, "I'd just like to say a huge thank you for putting on such a great cycling event. Great route and quite challenging in places, excellent marshalling throughout and a very good turnout. Maybe it's time to ramp up the distance from 50 to 75 miles? Everyone I spoke to said what a great ride they'd had and the weather couldn't have been better. Well done to everyone involved."

Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show is now in its 40th year of raising funds for local charities including LOROS and Rainbows Children’s Hospice. Over the last 39 years the show has raised over £92,000, all of which has been donated to local charites, and with your help we'd like to take the grand total to £100,000 or more.

Our first event this year was held at Swithland Memorial Hall on Saturday 16th April where a packed hall of 78 people helped us to raise over £1,600.00 by attending our Grand Race Night. The evening was a great success and lots of fun for all who attended which has got our fund raising off to a great start!

The Swithland Flower and Vegetable show will be held later this year on Saturday 10th September across two venues; Swithland School and across the road at The Griffin Inn. This popular, traditional village show will be opened by BBC TV news presenter Anne Davies and is great fun for the whole family packed with exhibits of flowers, vegetables, fruit, cakes, baking and other produce entered by enthusiastic entrants from all over the county. There are also our photography, arts, crafts and children’s categories showcasing some great talent. New fly tipping fines promise some relief for rural areas, says CLA

THE CLA says new fixed penalty notices for fly tipping which came into force on 9th May are welcome, but fears they may not be enough to stem the rising tide of refuse dumped in rural areas.

As of 9th May, local authorities will be able to issue fines for small scale fly-tipping of up to £400 as an alternative to prosecution, following the introduction of new Government regulations on the unauthorised deposit of waste. According to DEFRA, 900,000 fly-tipping incidents were dealt with by local authorities in England during 2014/15. Yet the CLA, which represents farmers, landowners and rural businesses, believes the figures exclude much of the waste dumped on private land where it poses risks to local wildlife, livestock and the environment.

Landowners are liable for any waste that is fly-tipped on their land and can be prosecuted if they do not clear it away, often at considerable cost to their business. CLA Midlands rural surveyor Mark Riches said that with fewer than 2,000 prosecutions for fly-tipping in 2014/15, more effective action is urgently needed: “We receive regular reports from our members of fly tipping, particularly when their land is located on the fringes of urban areas. The waste involved is not just the occasional bin bag, but large household items, from unwanted sofas to broken washing machines and building materials.

“The CLA has been calling for offenders to be dealt with more robustly and we welcome this latest tightening in the regulations.

“Fixed penalty notices will not solve the problem, but they are a positive step in tackling an issue which is estimated to cost rural businesses an average of £800 per incident and is a continuing and damaging blight on our countryside.

Mr Riches added that May Bank Holiday often saw an increase in fly-tipping as people started work on their homes and gardens in earnest, with many having no plans for disposal of the rubbish generated. He urged people in rural areas to be vigilant, and to report fly-tipping incidents to the police, with as much information as possible.

Guided walk by Neil Pilcher of Herbert’s Meadow and Ulverscroft Woods There was a good turnout on Wednesday June 8 for a guided tour led by Neil Pilcher of Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT). 30 members of Friends of Charnwood Forest (FOCF) had a fascinating walk through lands cared for by the Trust with much information from Neil Pilcher.

Herbert’s Meadow is a site of about 8 acres, managed by the Trust. The Trust also manages several nearby sites, owned by itself and the National Trust. The meadow is managed on a five year cycle, with grazing and this year a hay crop.

The meadow is ablaze with wild flowers. There are many varieties of orchid; Common Orchid, Bee Orchid, Fragrant Orchid and many other plants.

Neil showed us various grasses and other plants and explained the cattle’s choice of their favourite foods, which necessitates careful control.

The Trust has the management of old oak woods and work on Sites Of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Members are free to visit but otherwise advance permission is necessary.

Councillor Paul Day, Chairman of FOCF, thanked Neil Pilcher and presented him with a cheque for the Trust’s funds.

Emily was looking for something that was never lost When Emily Owen was 16 she underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour. Three days later, as she turned 17, she was fighting for her life in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

She was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and as a result of the condition and surgery over the years, she lost her hearing, her balance has been impaired, and she has damage to her facial nerve.

A gifted musician and sports’ lover, Emily didn’t feel like Emily any more.

She couldn’t run.

She had a wonky smile.

She couldn’t play the flute.

And she knew far more medical terminology than she ever should.

Eventually, painfully, Emily began to let go of what had been and come to terms with the realities of her changed life.

Despite the illness, trauma, pain, hardships and setbacks, Emily discovered she was still Emily and her inspirational story is recounted in her latest book, Still Emily - Seeing Rainbows in the Silence.

This is her fourth book but the first to recount the last 20 years and her struggle to come to terms with how dramatically her life was changed by illness.

“I wasn’t sure that anyone would actually want to read my story,” says Emily, 36, who lives in Leicester, where she was born and brought up.

Emily’s struggle coming to terms with her life changing condition and the surgery she required, is recounted in the book; but so too are the good times, her incredible sense of humour, her willingness to take up a challenge and her optimism for the future, and the amazing support network of family and friends around her.

Warning Zone is a children’s educational charity, based at Frog Island in Leicester. By the end of this school year we will have had over 9,000 year 6 pupils (aged 10 & 11) visit us from Primary, Independent and Special Schools from Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
