Epworth Forest are celebrating after being awarded a £1,500.00 Grow the Game grant, something that has attracted praise from England Manager Gareth Southgate.

The grant, which will provide a boost to grassroots football in Leicester Forest East, has paved the way for Epworth Forest to create a new team at Under 17 age group, and to get coaches the proper FA accredited qualifications.

Desford and Peckleton Art Club Successful Spring Exhibition 2017 This year’s Spring Exhibition at Desford and Peckleton Art Club displayed a very high standard of artworks ranging from textiles and felting to more traditional oils and watercolours. Upwards of 250 people visited the exhibition over the weekend. The winner of the Favourite Picture award as voted by the visiting public was Jan Foster with her watercolour “Springtime.” Jan’s picture also shared the Best in Show award, as voted by members, with Dave Freer’s picture “My Mate Ron.”

England Men’s Senior Manager and Football Foundation Ambassador, Gareth Southgate, said: “I am so pleased that Epworth Forest has secured this Grow the Game grant. The club has worked very hard with Leicestershire and Rutland County FA and the Football Foundation to get more local people playing football so that they can enjoy the many physical and mental benefits that come with playing regular sport.

“Grow the Game is mainly funded by The FA and delivered by the Football Foundation. This is money that is flowing from the very top of the game down to the lowest levels, to help clubs at the grassroots to bear the cost of starting up a new team, whether it be for a new kit, pitch hire or sending volunteers on FA accredited coaching courses.”

Grow the Game is a £2.5m programme funded by The FA and the Football Foundation. It awards grants to grassroots football clubs that wish to create new teams, especially amongst under-represented groups. £1,500 is available to help FA-affiliated clubs with the cost of creating a new team, which might include the cost FA coaching courses; FA league affiliation costs; referees’ fees; first aid kits; and even football kit & equipment.

Epworth Forest Secretary and team Manager said: it’s fantastic that the Football Foundation has been able to help us with this grant, with this it would have been a real struggle to form this new team.

Other attractions were a plant sale and a Tombola Stall. Finance is obviously one of the continuing areas of concern but, of equal importance is footfall in the building and this event attracted a steady flow of visitors throughout the weekend.

The Exhibition was held in the Library during the Weekend Saturday 24th June and Sunday 25th June from 11.00am to 3.00pm on each day. Permission to close the library on the Saturday had been granted.

 

Michael Ball delivered a lecture from his current research about Ratby residents and concentrated on the Freeman Family.

Volume Five of Ratby History is now available for purchase from Ratby Post Office or Ratby Library with no increase in cost, it is still £10.

Wriggly Readers The sessions take place at the Ratby Library on alternate Thursdays from 1030 to 1130 and will continue throughout the summer on 13th and 27th July and 10th and 24th August.

 

As before the exhibition was open to artists from Ratby and the surrounding area. Fifty Five entries were received which made an interesting display including photographs, machine embroidery and paintings in a variety of mediums. Some of which are displayed on this page.

My thanks go to the volunteers who gave their  time to make the event such a success.

However Alison Graham who prepared and oversaw the event deserves all our thanks for creating an exhibition that was appreciated by exhibitors and visitors alike. Thank you Alison.

HEALTHMATTERS Keep Your Skin Safe In The Sun Almost everyone loves the sun. The rays of the sun make us feel good and we feel happier. Although the sun’s short term effects make us feel great, in the long term it can cause damage to the skin which can ultimately be fatal.

UVA and UVB rays from the sun can cause many problems and potentially the worst problem they can cause is skin cancer. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, around 100,000 people a year are diagnosed with it in the UK. More than 12,000 of these cancers are malignant melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. Each year, around 2,200 people die from skin cancer.

Skin cancer can affect anyone, but people most at risk have fair skin, red or fair hair, moles or freckles, personal or family history of skin cancer, or might have already had sunburn when young.

People with naturally brown or black skin are less likely to get skin cancer as darker skin has some protection against UV rays. However, skin cancer can still occur.

In order to prevent skin cancer it is essential to prevent over exposure to the UV rays of the sun, however this does not mean to avoid the sun totally as we require UVB rays to produce vitamin D (needed for healthy bones). It is about striking a balance between the two.

Sunburn occurs when there is over exposure to UVB rays. It causes the top layers of skin to release chemicals that make blood vessels swell and leak fluids. Some experts believe that just one episode of blistering sunburn before the age of 20 can double your chance of getting skin cancer.

You can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer and being sunburnt by protecting your skin with sunscreen. Sunscreens with at least a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 should be used. SPF basically means the amount of time that you can normally spend in the sun without being burnt multiplied by the factor number. So if you have very fair skin and will burn after 10 minutes in the sun, by applying a SPF cream of 15, you can then roughly have 150 minutes of sun exposure without being burnt. (10 minutes multiplied by factor of 15 equals 150 minutes.) Sun protection factors are a rough estimate and will vary according to numerous other factors such as intensity of sun,

colour of skin, amount of cream applied etc. At the Village pharmacy we have special offers on many sunscreens and sunburn products for the summer.

The following advice should also help in preventing sunburn and skin cancer: • Avoid strong sunlight whenever possible, particularly when the sun is strongest (between 11am and 3pm), and cover up with loose clothing and a hat.

• When buying sunscreen, choose one with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least factor 15 – the higher the better – that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

• Apply a generous amount of sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going out in the sun and reapply regularly at least every two to three hours. Even water-resistant sunscreens should be reapplied after you come out of the water.

• A stick application with a high SPF is useful for exposed areas, such as your nose, ears and lips.

These areas tend to burn more easily.

• Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight.

NEWS FROM RATBY PARISH COUNCIL...

At its June meeting the Parish Council discussed the following: 1. (a) Fly-tipping There is an increasing problem regarding fly-tipping on to Ferndale Park. This consists of grass cuttings, boughs/branches from trees which some residents have thrown over their fences on to the park. As you are all no doubt aware, fly-tipping is illegal and if culprits are known, the Parish Council will prosecute.

This illegal fly-tipping involves extra expenditure for the Council, in that additional clearing work has to be carried out. (b) Skip – Church Ponds Close The Parish Council has a skip located in Church Ponds Close. During the course of the past few weeks, there has been a mattress and a bed dumped next to the skip. There have also been stackable metal chairs deposited close to the skip.

This area and skip is not a public dumping ground for any unwanted rubbish, furniture etc., to be left there and should not be used as an alternative to the Borough Council’s recycling site!

2. Damage to hedgerows The Council had previously made the decision to hedge-lay all the hedges in the village. This work has commenced. However, there have been incidents whereby the hedge-laying which has taken place has

been destroyed and, in some cases, the hedging has been either cut down or ripped out. This will also involve the Parish Council in further expense in replacing the torn out hedging plants.

3. Electrically driven scooters Residents of Ratby need to watch out for an electric scooter being driven on the pavements throughout the village. This electrically driven scooter being driven is fast and could cause an accident to pedestrians.

Please note that it is illegal to drive this on the pavement: “Electric scooter laws in the UK Because electric scooters are powered by a motor (an electrical one), they are classed as mechanically propelled vehicles and, therefore, a motor vehicles.

Motor vehicles with less than four wheels, and less than 410kg are then classed as motorcycles. This is defined in Section 185 of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Due to their low speed they then end up in the subcategory of moped. So officially in UK electric scooter laws, the scooter is classed as a moped.

Can you ride an electric scooter on the pavement in the UK? Under Section 72 of the Highway Act 1835, it is classed as an offence to ride a vehicle on the pavement.”

5. Holding events on Parish Council land If residents/groups wish to hold events on land owned/leased by the Parish Council, they should approach the Council prior to the event. As a public authority, there are certain forms/declarations etc., which need to be completed. Completed documentation then needs to be ratified by the Council before an event takes place.

6. HGV traffic through village The Council has been made aware of the increasing number of HGVs travelling through the village. It would be very helpful if, whoever notices these vehicles, could either take note of the registration number or the name of the company.

This information could then be passed on to the company and the police for action.

On a more pleasant note, the Council has recently had the Community Garden site re-vamped in Ferndale Park which covers a larger area than before. It is hoped that any new planting at this site will be left alone to grow and make a valuable feature for residents visiting the park.

The Hospice is once again teaming up with The Great Central Railway for the event, giving participants the chance to take a walk through the beautiful Leicestershire countryside before riding a train from Rothley Station. Bookings are now being taken for the event, which is taking place on Saturday 1st October but with ticket numbers limited and last year’s event selling out within weeks, people are being urged to secure their slot as soon as possible.

LOROS Fundraising Co-ordinator Dave Nicklin said: “Last year’s Full Steam Ahead was without a doubt a huge success, so it was a no brainer when we decided to bring it back for a second year running.

“We’re making it bigger and better this time round, with a range of short and long distance walks for participants to choose from.”

More than 200 people took part in the event last year, with that number set to triple this time round, with 600 tickets up for grabs. Those taking part this time round, can choose to walk five, eight, nine or 10 miles, each of which will end with a complimentary hog roast.

“This event is one for all the family, with dogs more than welcome to come along too; they’re even allowed to ride the train,” added Dave.

“We raised £5,000 from last year’s Full Steam Ahead and we’re hoping to raise that amount once again, plus more.”

Adult tickets for this event, which is sponsored by Western Power Distribution, start at £8, for the nine mile route, which is a walk only and no train ride.

For all other route options, adult tickets cost £18, with under 12’s £12 and under 3’s free.

Holiday at Home Event During the week of August 7th to 11th August, Ratby Parish Church will be running a ‘Holiday at Home’ event for people over the age of 60 Years. The event will be held in the Church rooms.

Advance Notice of a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order A50 Groby A Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO) is to be made for the following location: A50 Groby from the Field Head roundabout towards the A46 roundabout .The purpose of the TTRO is to facilitate waterproofing the bridge deck on the overbridge of Newtown Linford Lane on the A50 at Groby.

The TTRO will incorporate a temporary road closure of the A50 and the entrance and exit slip roads from Newtown Linford Lane to the A50.

The proposed programme for the works is:Tuesday 31st July from 8pm to Wednesday 1st August 6am – the A50 will be closed to erect Traffic Management for 24 hour lane closure.

Wednesday 1st August from 6am to Friday 4th August 8pm - lane closures on the A50 at the Newtown Linford Lane overbridge.

Friday 4th August from 8pm to Monday 7th August 6am – The A50 will be closed for 24 hours - weekend road closure.

The duration of the TTRO is for a period not exceeding 1 month commencing 31st July.

The actual duration of the restriction is not anticipated to exceed a period of 3 days within the aforementioned duration.

Fraudsters have been advertising vehicles and machinery for sale on various selling platforms online. The victims, after communicating via email with the fraudster, will receive a bogus email which purports to be from an established escrow provider (a third party who will keep the payment until the buying and selling parties are both happy with the deal).

These emails are designed to persuade victims to pay upfront, via bank transfer, before visiting the seller to collect the goods. The emails also claim that the buyer (victim) has a cooling off period to reclaim the payment if they change their mind. This gives victims the false sense of security that their money is being looked after by this trustworthy third party, when in fact it is not and the money has gone straight to the fraudster.

I have been contacted by an 87 year old gentleman who had received a message on his answerphone purporting to be from the HMRC. The message said. “Hello this is HMRC you have a lawsuit against you press 1 to speak to the case officer or Ring 07537182372.

The gentleman rang the number but it was not in use. I have advised the gentleman if he is contacted again not to pass any details and not to ring them back this is a new type of HMRC scam and trading standards are contacting this gentleman for reassurance and looking into this case at my request.

Foundation Stage Trips

On Wednesday 7th June, Year 2 spent two fun filled nights away at Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre in Mablethorpe. It was a brilliant trip and the children behaved marvellously throughout. They were all very excited and had been looking forward to the holiday all year, especially  as for most, it was their first time away from home on their own!

We have enjoyed two amazing trips this month!

The first one was a Teddy Bear’s Picnic at Bradgate Park. This was special because we met up with Foundation Stage children from 4 other local schools. We enjoyed lots of activities  such as finding ‘worms’ that were camouflaged and looking closely at the old trees in the park.

We had talked about the deer at the park, but then we were    treated to a close up      encounter with a real life Bambi!







In the evenings, the children were treated to a movie night where the popcorn and sweets were flowing freely! We also held our own disco night and the children received individual certificates and prizes.

Overall, everyone had an amazing time! The children were fantastic ambassadors for Ratby Primary School and their teachers and parents are very proud.



We also went to Manor Farm and had a really exciting day, playing in some fabulous play areas and meeting animals on the farm.

We were able to stroke a rabbit, guinea pig, a hen and a gorgeous baby hedgehog. One child declared “This is the best day of my life!”

 

Our accommodation was situated right by the beach front and the  children  enjoyed    every   minute    the beach.     of We all had a great time                building sandcastles, paddling in the sea and collecting shells. The                    enjoyed on  children   also     a ride   the sand train, lunch at a fish and chip shop, ice-cream, a visit to the RNLI lifeboat centre and a morning at a                  seal sanctuary.

On the first week back after half term, Year 6 started planning for the Young Enterprise project.

We did tasks like a presentation, posters, products and a video advert. Our team, Candy Crush, had our winning advert published on Twitter.

On the 6th June 2017,  the nine groups started selling their products. There was a range of items including: watermelon, ice poles, popcorn, cookies, midnight movie ice cream, slime, stress balls, cakes and loads more treats. The profit we made between us all was an amazing £731.23 and, with some of the money, the teachers are taking us to Rebound [trampoline park] and we are also having some delicious food .

We had lots of fun making and selling our products; we are very grateful to all the people who brought our goods and helped us raise money.

Year 5 Drayton Manor Trip

On Friday 9th June, Year five had an amazing experience, when we got to go to Drayton Manor for our new topic ‘Scream machine’. Once we got there, we were so excited to go on the rides. First we were put into separate classes,  one class had their workshop and the other looked around the zoo.

Once one class had finished the workshop the other class went to it. We learnt how forces helped rollercoasters work and lots more. Once we had finished the workshop we all had our lunch, yum!

When the afternoon came we went on the rides which were really fun. We had the choice to go on the ride or not, as the teachers chose a ride for us to go on. We all went on lots of fun rides like Apocalypse and the Pirate ship which we really enjoyed a lot, as we got to experience forces at work. Unfortunately the day came to an end and it was time for us to go, we still had an amazing time and we are thankful for the experience.

Leicestershire based Walking Footballer, Jim Read, was named The FA Mars Just Play Player of the Year at St George’s Park on Monday 26 June.

Due to his unwavering commitment to Leicestershire & Rutland County FA’s Just Play Walking Football session, Jim Read, of Sapcote, Leicester, was named The FA Mars Just Play Player of the Year at St George’s Park on Monday 26 June.

This is the true story of how, in 1986, Saroo, an illiterate, impoverished five-year-old in rural central India, got separated from his brother at a railway station in Burhanpur, and accidentally ended up alone on a train that took him almost a thousand miles to Kolkata (Calcutta). Unable to speak Bengali, and unaware of the  name of his home town, he had no way to return.

 the concept of Walking Football,  Jim After watching a television advert explain began attending sessions at Holmes Park, organised by the County FA and the FA Mars Just Play programme.

He lived as a street urchin and survived on his wits and scraps of food. Later he was taken in by an orphanage, eventually adopted by an Australian couple, who took him to start a new life in Tasmania.

Despite suffering a broken hand while playing in goal, Jim never missed a session at Holmes Park this year and his admirable commitment has helped him overcome personal health issues as well.

Since launching in 2011, The FA Mars Just Play programme has established itself as one of the biggest and fastest-growing initiatives to encourage adults to get active and play football.



A quarter-century later came the implausible twist. Saroo – by now a robust, happy, windsurfing, fully fledged Aussie – used Google Earth, a handful of visual memories and immense dedication to identify his home town: Khandwa, in central India. In February 2012 he travelled there to find his biological mother, Fatima.

This year it celebrated one million attendances at sessions up and down the country and these awards recognise the on-going efforts of players, teams, centres and organisers to drive adult participation in grassroots football.

After picking up the award, Jim said: “We have sessions twice a week and have 30 or so players that attend regularly. We’ve entered tournaments and been able to field two teams, so there’s still a competitive side to it. I’m the oldest, I’ll be 77 in November, but age doesn’t stop us, we play properly.

“There’s not many places men can meet in a sporting atmosphere that’s not in the pub. So it’s great socially, there’s plenty of banter – normally aimed at me – with the added bonus of keeping fit. We’ve got a Walking Football group on Whatsapp and there’s plenty of banter. Walking Football certainly has a positive effect on our lives.”

If it’s very warm outside and you’re going out in the car, think very carefully about what you are going to do with your dog when you get to your destination. It can get unbearably hot in a car on a sunny day, even when it’s not that warm.

In fact, when it’s 22°C/72°F outside, the temperature inside a car can soar to 47°C/117°F within a short space of time.

Unlike humans, dogs pant to help keep themselves cool. In a hot stufffy fy car, dogs can’t cool down so leaving a window open or a sunshield on your windscreen won’t keep your car cool enough. Leaving a bowl of water for them in a car is also inefffectual fectual and wa water heats up quickly and often gets knocked over when a distressed dog is trying to get out of the situation. Under the Animal Welfare Act everyone has a legal duty to care for their animals and if they put an animal at risk, they could face prosecution. So, if you ever see a dog in a car on a warm day please call the Police on 999.

The biggest danger to a dog in this situation is heatstroke, which can be fatal. Some dogs are more prone to heatstroke. For example, dogs with short snouts, fatter tter or heavily he muscled dogs and long-haired breeds, as well as very old or very young dogs are susceptible. A dog which is unable to reduce their body temperature, could develop heatstroke and here are some signs to look for: • Heavy panting • Profuse salivation • A rapid pulse • Very red gums/tongue • Lethargy • Lack of coordination • Reluctance or inability to rise affter ter collapsing • Vomiting • Diarrhoea • A loss of consciousness in extreme circumstances.

If your dog shows any symptoms of heatstroke, move them immediately to a shaded, cool area and seek advice from your vet. Heatstroke should always be treated as an emergency.

Dogs sufffering fering from fr heatstroke urgently need to have their body temperature gradually lowered.

Immediately douse your dog with cool (not cold) water, to avoid shock. – You could put your dog in a shower and run cool water over

water and then place your dog in the breeze of a fan.

Let your dog drink small amounts of cool water. Continue to douse them with cool water until their breathing starts to settle – never cool your dog so much that they begin to shiver. Once you have cooled your dog down you should take them straight to the veterinary surgery g y for a check up. p We need to be aware however fer he heat in many other that dogs sufffer situations and we should, as pet owners, ensure that this risk is minimised. Here then are some tips for warm weather safety. • Your Your dog should always be able to move into a cooler, ventilated environment if they are feeling hot. • Iff you want to take tak your dog with you on a car journey, make sure that your destination is dog-friendly. • If you have to leave your dog outside, you should provide a cool shady spot where they can escape from the sun at all times of the day. • Make sure your dog always has a good supply of drinking water, in a weighted bowl that can’t be knocked over. Carry water with you on hot days and give your dog frequent small amounts. • Never leave your dog in a glass conservatory or a caravan. Even if it is cloudy when you leave, the sun may come out later in the day. • Groom your dog regularly to get rid of excess hair. Give long-coated breeds a haircut at the start of the summer and later in the season, if necessary. This also applies to those breeds that do not shed their coats – owners need to ensure the weight and thickness of coat do not add to the risk of heatstroke through correct clipping.

The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group The Kirby Muxloe Local History Group generally meets 6 times a year, and membership is open to all. Visitors are always welcome to our meetings, which usually take place in St. Bartholomew’s Church Hall, Main St., Kirby Muxloe and start at 7.30 pm. They are normally on either a Thursday or Tuesday.

Looking back to 1985, a group of members of the Free Church, headed by the late George LeMay, set up the Kirby Muxloe Free Church Housing Association Ltd. Their original idea was to build a residential home to provide accommodation for elderly people in the village.

In 1987, the venture gained Charitable status. Over the next few years, and after an amazing amount of work including fund raising, concerts, garden teas, an auction, generous gifts and four large legacies, the group had accumulated a sizeable amount of money. In 1988, the group heard that Mr and Mrs Sissons were looking to retire and realised that their property was in the ideal location for the Home. In 1989, the property went up for sale and the Management committee decided it was too good an opportunity to miss. A final price was agreed and the purchase moved forward, only to find that despite numerous bids for funding and financial assistance, there was still a large shortfall in funds. At the eleventh hour, a very generous offer was made by an unnamed person, with a loan for three years

with no interest.

The group readily accepted with grateful thanks. So with this loan and other smaller loans, the property purchase went ahead. As many of our readers will remember, the original charity shop in a small section of the building expanded, and over the next ten years, with the help of numerous volunteers from the village churches and the community, the fantastic amount of £214,000 was raised. Changes in care for the elderly meant that instead of a residential home, the project would build thirteen two bedroom flats, some owner occupied and some rented. A knowledgeable builder was found, William Davis, and in August 2000 the original building was demolished. On May 25th, 2001, the first resident, Mrs Betty Caple, moved in, followed by many more in the following years. This was such an amazing project, undertaken in a time of rising property prices and government cuts to funding, that the work and dedication of the many people involved should never be forgotten. Why the name “Carey” House? Well, the founder of the Baptist Missionary Society was William Carey, George Carey was the Archbishop of Canterbury at the time and the word “care” is within the name Carey. This is a story of the churches and the community working together, to provide a much-needed safe haven for the elderly people in the village.

Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 19th September, when there will be a talk entitled ‘Medieval Manor Houses in Leicestershire’ – speaker Peter Liddle, MBE, former County Archaeologist and well-known for his appearances on “Time Team”.

Ratby’s Annual (Horticultural) Blaby & Show Saturday 12th August Whetstone welcome legal wall

Ratby’s Annual (Horticultural) Show is being held on Saturday 12th August at Ratby Sports Club, Desford Lane, Ratby. LE6 0LE. The show opens to the public at 2pm with presentation of trophies at 3.30pm.

This is a community event and the show team invite everyone to enter their exhibits, have a good day, and by doing so help to ensure the successful continuation of this and similar village shows. Some of you may be entering for the first time and wonder what it is all about. Begin by picking-up a show schedule from Ratby library, Groby library, post offices in both villages, or the various shops, businesses and garden centres throughout the area. Carefully read the schedule taking note of ‘Show Rules’ and the ‘Hints to Help You’ pages, decide which classes you would like to enter - there is a choice from 100 classes - complete the entry form that comes with the schedule and bring it with your entries to the Sports Club on either Friday 11th August from 7pm to 8pm, or Saturday 12th August from 8.30am to 10.30am. No charge is made for the entering of exhibits. The show is open to all and includes a section for young people up to the age of 16. And you don’t have to live in Ratby to take part – everyone is very welcome.

An exciting pilot project to turn an underpass into the District’s first ‘legal wall’ has begun.

This year (2017) is the Diamond Anniversary of the Leicester & Leicestershire Horticultural Judges’ Guild, and to mark this the Guild is sponsoring a class in the show for 1 specimen pot plant, 1 specimen flower, and 1 specimen vegetable. The Guild will provide a 1st, 2nd, & 3rd prize with accompanying certificates for this class.

Trophies will be presented by the Mayor of the Borough, Cllr Ozzy O’Shea who will be accompanied by his wife Jenny. During his year of office, he will be supporting two charities, Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Police Widows and Dependants charities. We are delighted to welcome Ozzy and Jenny to the show.

There will be a tombola, and tea, coffee and cake will be available. The Sports Club will be serving drinks from the bar and, as in previous years, we hope to enjoy the sights and sounds of a cricket match in full swing.

Swithland Show The hugely popular Swithland Flower and Vegetable Show will, again, be held at the usual venues of The Griffin Inn and Swithland School on Saturday 9th September. The show opens to visitors at 1.30pm.

Last years show, our 40th, was a huge success and we raised in excess of a staggering £9000.00 for our chosen charities which include Rainbows and LOROS plus many other local charities. For this we thank all of our visitors, contestants and sponsors.

Connecting Whetstone and Blaby under the A426, the underpass next to College Road has been the target of graffiti for a number of years, with different solutions proving unsuccessful. The new pilot, introduced by Blaby District Council’s Environmental Health Team, designates the underpass as a ‘Legal street art wall.’

Street artists use designated legal public walls to create art without the threat of prosecution.

Local business GraffHQ will manage the underpass and carry out regular checks, with the company already managing a legal wall in Leicester city.

The Council consulted with local residents and partnership organisations before launching the pilot project; the first event took place on Sunday 11 June artists taking the opportunity to transform the wall.

Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Health Improvement, Leisure & Regulatory Services, said: “This site has been a target of vandalism for many years and has been an issue for both local residents and Parish Councils.

“We are pleased to trial this initiative with Graff HQ, with the results so far very impressive. I’m hopeful it becomes a site that the artists and local residents can be proud of.”

Izzy Hoskins from Graff HQ, said: “We’re really glad to be a part of this pilot and to have this space to use on the underpass. We know there are very talented artists in the District and by working with the Council with this canvas we hope to support their artistic development.

“If the artwork is damaged it can be repaired.

The artists will effectively self-manage the site as with other sites.”

‘Huge cause for concern’ as survey reveals Brits failing to meet the recommended daily allowance of fruit and veg A NEW survey commissioned by Diabetes UK to promote its ‘Food you love’ healthy eating campaign in Diabetes Week, has found that 66 per cent of adults eat three or fewer portions of fruit and/or vegetables a day – well below the recommended five portions - and 46 percent won’t eat any fruit at least three days a week.

The survey also found that three quarters of us don’t know what constitutes a recommended portion of vegetables, and two thirds of people weren’t able to identify a portion of fruit (both of which are 80g, that’s equivalent to three heaped tbsps of vegetables or a handful of fruit like an apple or pear).

Diabetes UK has described the results of the survey as ‘a huge cause for concern’, as a healthy, balanced diet is important for everyone, including people living with diabetes. Diabetes can affect anyone - the survey highlighted that most of us (59 per cent) now know someone with the condition. Yet most people would ignore four out of six symptoms of diabetes (thrush, fatigue, increased urination and extreme thirst).

Emma Elvin, Clinical Advisor for Diabetes UK, said, “These survey results are a huge cause for concern when you recognise the fact that in the UK, 3.6 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes and 11.9 million people are at increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. “Simple lifestyle changes such as eating a balanced diet, eating more fruit and vegetables and getting more exercise are an important part of managing all types of diabetes and can reduce the risk of serious of long term complications such as blindness, amputations and even early death.� “A healthy lifestyle can also massively reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. We know that obesity is one of the biggest risk factors for Type 2 diabetes, with two in three people in the UK being overweight or obese, but three in five cases of Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by maintaining a healthy weight, eating well and being active.�

The research also revealed: • Two thirds of people don’t know that baked beans could contain up to 5 tsps of sugar • Two thirds of people (66 per cent salad cream, 65 per cent ketchup) have no idea how much sugar is in ketchup or salad cream • 28 per cent of people add salt to food before even tasting it, eating too much salt is linked to high blood pressure which increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and kidney disease • Nearly six in ten people (58 per cent) wanted to eat more vegetables but 23 per cent thought they were too expensive, 16 per cent said they tend to go off, nine per cent said they took too long to prepare and five per cent said they were too messy to eat.

In order to get people eating more healthily, Diabetes UK has embarked on a new ‘Food you love’ advertising campaign all about healthy eating to inspire everyone with recipes featuring the food they love, only healthier. The charity hopes the easy recipes and tips will inspire more people to make small changes that can make a big difference to how they manage their diabetes.

The ‘Food you love’ campaign is being fronted by five ‘everyday’ people cooking the recipes they love and has received celebrity support from chefs including: Jamie Oliver, Prue Leith, ‘Deliciously’ Ella and Angela Hartnett. Borough Council’s Website Named in UK Top 10% The Borough Council’s website is in the top ten percent council websites in the country according to the Society of Information Technology Management (SOCITM), the independent organisation responsible for vetting UK council websites.

Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council’s website – www.hinckley-bosworth.gov.uk - is one of 36 out of the 416 council websites in the UK and one of just two council websites in the East Midlands to be awarded the top four star rating in SOCITM’s Better Connected audit for 2016-2017.

Every year SOCITM carries out an independent audit of all UK council websites, focusing on the quality of the online experience tested using a standard desktop computer and a mobile device. Star ranking is awarded to each site based on how well the website works from mobiles, the quality of search and navigation and how accessible the site is to people with disabilities.

Thefts From Unattended Vans.

Ozzy has been made aware that there has been a spate of thefts from unattended vans during the night across the whole of Leicestershire. There have been a number in

the Groby and Markfield area.

We would ask residents to be vigilant and not leave valuable equipment in there vans where possible.

The police have an operation in place to try and tackle this issue.

2017 is the 80th anniversary of this prestigious award and the competition asked school groups who shadow the awards to read as many of the past-winning books as they could and decide on their all-time Top 10. South Charnwood’s book club got to work straight away reading lots of brilliant books and then produced a video of their Top 10, filmed in different scenarios around the school that best matched the settings of the books.

The judges were suitably impressed and declared South Charnwood as Anniversary Reading Champions for 2017! The prize was to attend the CILIP Carnegie Medal Ceremony in London on June 19th. This was a wonderful occasion attended by world-famous authors, illustrators, publishers and librarians. They were able to see the 2017 awards announced for the Carnegie Medal, the Kate Greenaway Medal and the Amnesty CILIP Honour; and were able to chat to current and past winners, shortlisted authors and illustrators alike at the drinks reception after the ceremony.
